Confusion As FG’s Witness Makes U-turn, Confesses To Court That No Instrument Of Terrorism Was Found On Nnamdi Kanu

The trial of Nnamdi Kanu, the embattled leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), resumed on Friday before Justice James Omotosho at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

During cross-examination, the prosecution’s principal witness (PW1), identified only as “AAA,” testified that he did not find any instrument of terrorism on the defendant.

The court had earlier granted the Federal Government’s request for its witnesses to testify behind a screen.

The prosecution is led by senior lawyer Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), while the defence team is headed by former Attorney General of the Federation, Kanu Agabi (SAN).

PW1, an operative of the Department of State Services (DSS), told the court he was among five officers present during Kanu’s interview as shown in a video played in court.

He noted his specific role was limited to “arresting the defendant, obtaining his statement, and escorting him to Abuja for onward investigation.”

On the items presented in court, AAA was asked whether any of them appeared offensive.

He replied, “No.” He said he analysed only Kanu’s phone, which is now part of the evidence, though he admitted that “there was no analysis in evidence because they considered it immaterial to the case.”

When asked whether the items confiscated during Kanu’s arrest still had any relevance, given that 10 years had passed, he responded: “Yes.”

He confirmed there is a record of the items the DSS claimed to have returned to the defendant but clarified that he “didn’t personally keep the records.”

PW1 also said he “did not find any instrument of violence on the lady with Kanu” and “did not consider her company as facilitating terrorism.”

When Agabi asked him directly, “Did you find any instrument of terrorism on the defendant?” he answered, “No.”

Responding to whether he contacted anyone mentioned by the defendant as his collaborators, AAA said, “The defendant didn’t mention any names.”

He also said he did not know whether others were standing trial alongside Kanu in the same case.

Agabi then put it to him: “I put it to you that there’s no other person in the whole of Nigeria who is standing terrorism trial for Biafra agitation except the defendant.”

To this, AAA replied that “some people stood trial with the defendant earlier, but I don’t know the state of those trials now.”

He added that he had read from social media and newspapers that Kanu had supporters, “like Simon Ekpa, who also carried on with the agitation.”

AAA acknowledged knowing that “the DSS is in the process of extraditing Simon Ekpa to Nigeria to face charges.”

When asked whether the defendant was charged with damaging any person’s property, he said, “Maybe not personally and virtually.”

On whether Kanu incited violence, AAA said there were social media messages that contained inciting content but admitted he did not know of “one person who carried out any act of violence because the defendant incited him.”

PW1 also recalled that the defendant referred to Nigeria as “a zoo.”

When asked whether Kanu ever spoke about corruption, youth unemployment, or lack of development in the country, he said he could not remember.

Asked if he recalled Kanu saying that “IPOB was not an armed group and does not give armed training to its members,” AAA said, “I remember the defendant saying IPOB does not bear arms.”

The defence counsel then drew comparisons with killings in other parts of Nigeria.

“There have been killings in Kaduna, Zamfara, Benue, Plateau, and other parts of the North. Are those killings based on any agitation for separation?” he asked.

“To the best of my knowledge, no,” AAA responded.

He also said Nigeria’s highways are safe “to a larger extent.”

Agabi pressed further: “Many Nigerians have been killed on their farms, in churches, in mosques, etc. Schools have been attacked, and students kidnapped or killed. Trains have been attacked, and passengers kidnapped and killed. These killings are not the product of any agitation for separation. Are they?” To this, AAA replied, “No.”

The case, which involves charges of terrorism and treasonable felony, dates back to 2015 following Kanu’s initial arrest in Lagos.

Legal delays have stalled progress for nearly a decade, with Tuesday’s session marking the first substantial opportunity for the prosecution to present evidence and witnesses.

Initially, four people were charged alongside Kanu. In February 2018, Justice Binta Nyako severed the trial, allowing proceedings against the others to continue after Kanu fled Nigeria.

Kanu was re-arrested in Kenya in June 2021 and returned to Nigeria to face trial.

Saudi Arabia Imposes $26,661 Fine For Hajj Visa Violations

Saudi Arabia has introduced tough new penalties aimed at curbing unauthorized participation in the annual Hajj pilgrimage.

The Ministry of Interior announced that individuals who violate Hajj permit regulations will face steep fines, deportation, and bans from re-entering the country.

According to a statement published by the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), the new enforcement measures are part of the kingdom’s ongoing efforts to regulate access to Makkah and the sacred sites during the pilgrimage.

These measures will be in effect from the 1st of Dhul-Qi’dah to the 14th of Dhul-Hijjah on the Islamic calendar.

The ministry warned that, “A fine of $5,332 will be imposed on individuals attempting to perform Hajj without a permit, and on visitors trying to enter or stay in Makkah during this period.”

In a stronger measure, a higher fine of $26,661 will be enforced on anyone who applies for a visit visa for individuals seeking to perform Hajj without the proper authorisation.

This same penalty will also apply to people who transport or house such visitors during the pilgrimage season.

“This includes concealing their presence or providing assistance that enables their stay,” the ministry emphasized, warning that the penalty would be applied per person and could multiply depending on the number of violators involved.

Authorities further noted that “illegal infiltrators, whether residents or visa overstayers, found attempting to perform Hajj will be deported and banned from re-entering the Kingdom for ten years.”

Additionally, vehicles used to transport those violating Hajj laws may be confiscated, pending a court ruling, particularly if the vehicle belongs to the transporter or anyone aiding the offense.

Saudi Arabia has maintained that these regulations are necessary to uphold order, manage crowds efficiently, and ensure the sanctity and safety of the Hajj pilgrimage.

Meanwhile, the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has confirmed that the airlift of Nigerian pilgrims will begin on May 9.

According to Fatima Sanda Usara, NAHCON’s Assistant Director of Information and Publication, “the Commission is fully prepared for the airlift exercise, and we urge all pilgrims to comply with Saudi regulations.”

She also disclosed that 43,000 Nigerian pilgrims have already completed their payments for the 2025 pilgrimage.

Governor Diri Sacks 27 Aides Over Support For Pro-Wike Movement

Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has terminated the appointments of 27 political aides who attended a rally in support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

The dismissals followed the aides’ participation in the inauguration of the Bayelsa chapter of The NEW Associates, a grassroots political group.

The rally, which was widely seen as endorsing Tinubu and Wike, reportedly drew the ire of the governor.

A letter titled TERMINATION OF APPOINTMENT” dated April 23, 2025, and signed by Mr. Irorodamie Komonibo, Deputy Chief of Staff to the Governor, made the disengagement official.

The document stated: “I write to inform you of the termination of the following appointments with immediate effect. Their appointments were communicated to your office in our letters under the listed reference numbers.”

Reacting strongly to the move, the Bayelsa State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) issued a statement condemning the governor’s action.

In the release signed by Derri Alasuote Wright, Publicity Secretary of the PDP Caretaker Committee in the state, the party expressed concern over the governor’s perceived intolerance.

“The sacking of these political appointees from the Prosperity Administration is particularly unfortunate,” the PDP stated.

“They are all party members who believed in our vision and laboured for our collective success.”

The statement continued: “Such decisions discourage civic engagement and political participation, and send a chilling message to others within the system.”

The party further criticized what it described as the misuse of public office: “The state government and treasury are public trusts, not personal possessions.”

Calling the sackings “a severe breach of trust and an affront to democratic participation,” the PDP urged Governor Diri to reconsider the decision and adopt a more inclusive approach.

“Together, let us stand firm in our commitment to democracy, solidarity, and the right to associate freely,” the statement concluded.

Defection: You Made Us Realize That A Sitting Vice President Can Decamp And Still Retain His Position – Oshiomhole Slams Atiku

Senator Adams Oshiomhole has taken a swipe at former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, stating that he lacks the moral authority to criticise former Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa and Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking at the 28th Founders’ Day Lecture of the Independent Television and Radio in Benin, themed “Nigeria, Where Are We Going?”, the senator representing Edo North said Atiku is in no position to condemn defections, as he has made party-switching a common practice.

“I was listening to people who tried to evaluate the import of the reunion of Edo and Delta with Dr. Okowa and Governor Oborevwori joining the APC,” Oshiomhole said.

He argued that Atiku has frequently shifted political allegiances to suit his personal interests and has often remained silent when such moves benefited him.

“And those who are talking, including people like Atiku, who helped us realize by his action that a sitting vice president can decamp and take the position of a vice president to an opposition party and still retain the position and Supreme Court has pronouncement on that.”

“At that time, I was the unofficial opposition as president of the NLC. He then went to Bourdillon in Lagos to join another party called Action Congress and became their presidential candidate and contested and lost.”

“This same person who is louder criticizing Okowa, again defected back to the PDP, he contested and lost, he again decamped to APC and contested against former president Muhammadu Buhari and he lost. He again decamped back to PDP and contested against President Bola Tinubu and lost,” Oshiomhole said.

He added that it was ironic for Atiku to target someone like Okowa, who had only switched political parties once.

“I was surprised that Atiku was criticising a man who only decamped once from one political party to another,” he said.

Oshiomhole also took the opportunity to refute a long-standing allegation that he once claimed all sins are forgiven once someone joins the APC. He insisted that the quote was a media distortion.

“I have issued statements to deny it. They (media) don’t have the proof. I have asked them to provide the video clips where I made the comment,” he said.

He explained that his comments had been taken out of context during a defection event involving a man named Patrick Iluobe.

“A man, Patrick Iluobe was defecting from the PDP to APC and his father’s name, Iluobe in their dialect means: I have stopped doing bad.

“So, I said now that you are leaving PDP, a party that deceive people, you will stop doing bad, but the media guys who are committed to the PDP mischievously twisted that Oshiomhole said once you join, APC, all your sins are forgiven,” he clarified.

Drama As Train Attack Victim Meets His Abductor At Kaduna Mosque

Comrade M. B. Muhammad, a victim of the 2022 Abuja–Kaduna train attack, has revealed that he recently encountered one of his abductors at a mosque in Kaduna State.

He shared the experience on social media, stating that the incident took place at Shema Mosque, located near Bakin Ruwa Junction in Rigasa, Igabi Local Government Area.

“Last night, after praying the Isha’i prayer at Shema Mosque near Bakin Ruwa junction in Kaduna, by the will of God, just as the imam ended the prayer, I ran into one of the men who kidnapped us aboard the AK-9 train that was attacked on March 28, 2022, during the Abuja–Kaduna journey,” he wrote.

Muhammad identified the man as Abubakar, saying he was stunned to see him in the congregation.

According to him, Abubakar claimed to have renounced terrorism and now earns a living as a commercial motorcyclist.

“His name is Abubakar. He told me he has repented and left terrorism behind. He now works as a motorcycle (okada) rider,” he stated.

Muhammad further explained that their conversation revealed a mix of outcomes among the kidnappers involved in the attack.

“After a lengthy conversation with him, I learned that some of the kidnappers have been killed, while others have continued with their acts of terror,” he said.

In an emotional turn, Muhammad said he chose to forgive Abubakar and even extended a charitable gesture to him.

“In the end, I told him I forgave them, and I gave him some charity because of the state I saw him in. Oh Lord of all the worlds, guide us all and guide them too,” he concluded.

When contacted, Muhammad confirmed the social media account of the encounter, speaking from his office in Kaduna Metropolis.

EFCC Will Prosecute All Thieves, Regardless Of Political Party, Says Olukoyede

The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Olanipekun Olukoyede, has reaffirmed the Commission’s resolve to pursue and prosecute individuals involved in corruption, no matter their political affiliations.

Speaking on Politics Today, a programme on Channels Television, Olukoyede said, “If we discover that you have stolen money, you will have questions to answer, regardless of whether you are from the APC, PDP, Labour Party, NNPP, or SDP.”

The EFCC boss made this declaration amid growing concerns and allegations that the anti-corruption agency focuses more on opposition politicians while sparing members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

However, Olukoyede denied these claims, stressing that the Commission is guided strictly by evidence and the rule of law.

“So, irrespective of your political affiliation, it is our duty to make sure that we do the right thing,” he said.

“So, for us, the issue is, have you allegedly committed an offence? Have we discovered an issue that you need to answer for? That is what drives our processes; that is what drives our action.”

He argued that contrary to popular belief, EFCC records show that more members of the ruling APC have been charged with corruption than politicians from other parties.

“If you check the statistics of our work in the area of investigation and prosecution, particularly high-profile cases, you will perhaps find more members of the ruling party, some of the cases we have done. So, we must be judged fairly,” Olukoyede stated.

He also cautioned against shielding any suspect due to their political leanings, saying it would be unjust for the Commission to avoid probing opposition figures simply to avoid criticism.

“You will find prominent members of the ruling party as part of the people we have investigated and filed charges against.”

“So, for us to close our eyes to people who perhaps are not members of the ruling political party will be unfair to us and will be an injustice to us,” he said.

Addressing public impatience with the investigation into the suspended Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Betta Edu, who is alleged to have misappropriated ₦30 billion, Olukoyede explained that the EFCC is conducting a thorough inquiry.

Edu was suspended in January 2024 over the controversial transfer of ₦585 million to a personal account.

Olukoyede noted, “We started the investigation of Betta Edu in January 2024; there are so many angles to the investigation. We are taking our time to uncover all that we need to uncover and have facts.”
