Reps Donates N18m To Victims Of Enugu Tanker Explosion

In a move to support victims of the tragic January 25 petrol tanker explosion at Ugwu Onyeama along the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, on Tuesday presented a cheque of N18 million to the Enugu State Government.

Describing the incident as a national tragedy, Abbas emphasized the commitment of the House to stand with affected citizens during moments of grief. Represented by members of the Enugu State Caucus in the House—led by Hon. Nnolim Nnaji and including Hon. Matins Oke, Hon. Dennis Amadi, Hon. Mark Obetta, Hon. Anayo Onwuegbu, and Hon. Chimaobi Atu—the Speaker commended Governor Peter Mbah for his swift and compassionate response.

“On behalf of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, we commiserate with the Government and people of Enugu State over the tanker incident at Ugwu Onyeama.”

“We acknowledge that you have done a lot to support both the injured and those who lost their loved ones,” Hon. Nnaji said.

“So, this is a cheque for N18 million to assist the state to further ameliorate their losses and challenges occasioned by the incident.”

“The Speaker sends his heartfelt condolences, once again. And you can continue to count on the support of the Speaker and the House,” he added.

Governor Mbah expressed appreciation for the donation, acknowledging the Speaker’s continued empathy and solidarity with the people of the state since the incident.

“On behalf of the Government and people of Enugu State, I express profound gratitude and deep appreciation for this wonderful gesture.”

“I recall that when the Ugwu Onyeama incident occurred, taking the lives of several of our loved ones, the Speaker called and assured that he was with us in prayers,” Mbah stated.

“Today, he has also shown us that he is not only with us in prayers, but also materially. He has equally come to mourn with us.”

“This cheque for N18 million will go a long way in cushioning the effect of the incident on those affected and their families.”

“Rest assured that as a government, we will ensure that this gets to them in a transparent, accountable, and just manner,” he assured.

Reports Of 80-Year Concession Deal For Enugu Airport Untrue – Keyamo

Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has refuted reports circulating in the media suggesting that the Federal Government has agreed to concession the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, for 80 years.

In a statement released on Monday by his Special Adviser on Media and Communications, Tunde Moshood, Keyamo clarified that while discussions are ongoing concerning the concession of five major airports in Nigeria, no final decision—especially on duration—has been made.

He acknowledged that the Federal Government is indeed considering proposals for airport concessions as part of a strategy to improve infrastructure and ensure the facilities meet international standards, particularly in light of the financial strain involved in maintaining them.

He noted that many of Nigeria’s airports currently operate at a loss and require monthly subsidies from the government.

According to the statement: “Our attention has been drawn to certain online reports/stories suggesting that a certain lengthy period of concession has been agreed upon regarding the Enugu International Airport. These reports/stories are utterly baseless and untrue.”

Keyamo also pointed out that the push for airport concessions began before his tenure.

“At this stage, prospective concessionaires have indeed submitted various proposals, including different durations for the concession,” the statement noted.

“It is important to emphasise that the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development has not established any fixed duration,” it continued.

“All submitted proposals are currently undergoing thorough evaluation that will eventually be reviewed by the ICRC before it is presented to the Minister for conveyance to FEC for approval. We can confirm that this review process has not been concluded.”

ECOWAS Ministers Meet In Accra Over Withdrawal Of Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger

The Council of Ministers of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is holding an Extraordinary Session in Accra, Ghana, from April 22 to 23, 2025, to address the formal exit of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger from the regional bloc.

According to ECOWAS Commission’s Director of Communications, Mr. Joel Ahofodji, the session will focus on finalizing withdrawal procedures and evaluating the implications for ECOWAS agencies operating in the three departing countries.

He noted that other pressing regional issues will also be discussed during the meeting.

An ECOWAS insider revealed that the ministers are expected to adopt a contingency plan that will guide the transition and facilitate negotiations on future relations between ECOWAS and the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), the newly formed bloc by the three countries.

Both ECOWAS and AES have reportedly set up negotiation teams to begin talks on the full disengagement process, including potential areas for continued cooperation, particularly in trade and the free movement of people.

The move follows the lapse of a one-year withdrawal notice issued by Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger in January 2024, which officially took effect in January 2025.

Despite a six-month grace period extended by ECOWAS for possible reconsideration, the three countries have remained firm on their decision to exit.

In line with Article 53 of the ECOWAS Staff Regulations, which prohibits nationals of non-member states from holding employment within its institutions, around 130 citizens from the three countries have been issued disengagement letters.

Their employment will officially end in September 2025.

A source at the Commission confirmed:
About 130 thereabout have been disengaged and they have till 30th September to exit the institution.”

One of the affected staff members, who requested anonymity, also confirmed receiving the disengagement letter.

“They have been issued their letter with a September terminal date for all of them,” the source added.

The President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, officially announced the exit of the three countries:
“The withdrawal of Burkina Faso, the Republic of Mali and the Republic of Niger from ECOWAS has become effective today, 29th January 2025.”

He added that ECOWAS would now proceed with formal negotiations for their departure. In the interim, passports and national identity cards bearing the ECOWAS logo will remain valid for travel within the region for citizens of the three countries.

He further stated “These arrangements will be in place until the full determination of the modalities of our future arrangements to the three countries by the ECOWAS authority of head of state and government.”

Touray expressed regret over the impact of the withdrawal on the bloc’s unity:
“The pull out of the three countries represents a blight on ECOWAS integration process.”

He noted that the departure overshadowed ECOWAS’ 50th anniversary celebration, but emphasized the Commission’s readiness to begin talks once the AES countries demonstrate commitment.

“Engagement with the three countries will commence as soon as they show commitment,” he said, adding that the countries had already signaled readiness to discuss institutional, legal, and trade matters.

On security, Touray stressed the importance of collective cooperation:
“It is in our collective interest to work together in all areas, including in the area of security. ECOWAS sees the security of each and every one of us to be closely tied. For that reason, security collaboration will continue at all levels, not only in the ECOWAS States but across the region.”

He also underscored the value of regional integration:
“ECOWAS has shown the whole world, and the community in particular, the value of being a member of ECOWAS. This is the region, the only region on the continent, where with a single ID card you can move from one end to another end. I’m not saying there are no problems, but legally you can move from one end to another end.

“You can pick up your passport, hop on a plane and go anywhere else without having to go through all these visa problems.”

“This is also the region where member states can trade freely among themselves for produce that are qualified under ECOWAS’s trade liberalisation scheme. So this is what we must build on for the benefit of our community, and I believe nobody should have a problem with this.”

Meanwhile, the AES has introduced measures diverging from ECOWAS policies.

These include a newly imposed 0.05 tariff on all goods entering their region, and the replacement of the ECOWAS passport with a new AES passport for their citizens.

2027: Our Party Has Not Been Fair To The Southeast – PDP Chieftain Urges Peter Obi To Return

As political momentum begins to build toward the 2027 general elections, a key figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Segun Sowunmi, has encouraged former Anambra State governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to rejoin the PDP to strengthen his presidential prospects.

Sowunmi, who previously served as the spokesperson for Atiku Abubakar’s presidential campaign, made this appeal during his appearance on the Mic On Podcast hosted by Seun Okinbaloye on Saturday.

Looking ahead to 2027, the PDP of Nigeria will open its processes, announce when the forms are available, and anyone who feels confident enough to contest should step forward and do so,” Sowunmi stated.

“If I were Peter Obi, I would return to the PDP and make a strong case for the presidential ticket. I believe he should come back to the party,” he added.

He further emphasized the party’s foundational ties to the South East and the late Dr. Alex Ekwueme, one of its founding fathers.

This party was originally conceived in the bedroom of (the late) Alex Ekwueme; so, I don’t understand why the Igbo, along with southern leaders and other influential figures within the PDP, can’t come together and say, ‘Alright, we recognise this – here’s the ticket,’” he said.

Sowunmi also pointed to Obi’s performance in the 2023 presidential election as proof of his wide appeal.

Despite running under the Labour Party with limited structural support, Obi managed to secure over six million votes across the country.

We’ve covered every region, but we have not gone to the South-East yet. Still, Obi is free to make his own decisions. If his numbers and the animated energy that is following him were to follow him into the PDP and he is the presidential candidate, I can guarantee you he would take the South East, South-South, the Christian North and North Central, Sowunmi asserted.

However, he clarified that his comments were speculative and not based on any formal discussions between Obi and himself.

Osun High Court Set Ablaze, NBA Condemns Action

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Osogbo branch, has strongly condemned the recent arson attack on the Osun High Court in Ilesa, which occurred on Monday.

The NBA, in a statement released by its Chairman, Mr. Yemi Abiona, on Tuesday in Osogbo, referred to the incident as a “heinous attack that poses a serious threat to justice delivery and the rule of law.”

Abiona expressed his concern, stating that it was troubling that this was the second such attack, recalling a similar incident in the past when Court 3 was set ablaze, including the chambers of a judge.

“I wonder what the perpetrators of such an attack on the court room intended to achieve. This attack is the handiwork of faceless cowards and ignorants,” he said.

While the cause of the fire is still under investigation, Abiona remarked that the inferno could not have been an “act of God.”

He questioned the intentions of the arsonists, wondering what they hoped to gain from destroying courtrooms that housed important legal documents.

“We only wonder what the perpetrators intend to achieve by setting fire to court rooms where documents are kept,” he added.

The NBA Chairman commended Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke for his prompt response, which included directing thorough investigations and reinforcing security measures at court premises across the state.

Abiona also called on security agencies to identify and apprehend the culprits, promising that the NBA would offer free legal services to prosecute anyone responsible for the attack.

“We are urging the police to leave no stone unturned in conducting a thorough investigation into the incident. Together, we can uphold the integrity of our justice system,” he concluded.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that Osun High Court 2 in Ilesa was set on fire early on Monday, resulting in the destruction of sensitive documents and exhibits, with the entire building being reduced to rubble.

Governor Adeleke has since ordered a detailed investigation and called for increased security around all court premises in the state.

Two More Bodies Recovered As Lagos Building Collapse Death Toll Rises To Eight

The death toll from the collapsed building at Ojodu-Berger, Lagos, has now reached eight after rescuers discovered two more bodies from the rubble on Monday, April 21, 2025.

Prior to this, six deaths had already been confirmed, with 20 survivors rescued following the collapse of the three-story uncompleted structure located at No. 10 Oremeta Street around 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 19, 2025.

The retrieval of the additional bodies added to the intense emotions at the scene, where numerous sympathizers had gathered since the incident.

Many of those present were overcome with grief, and the area has become a place of reflection for locals and visitors alike.

Construction had recently resumed on the top floor of the building before it gave way.

According to a resident, the ground floor served as a bar, eatery, and parking space, while the upper floors remained unoccupied.

Officials from the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) and the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) continued working at the site on Monday, using excavators to clear debris and load it onto trucks.

The building’s owner, Mariam Omotanwa Salua, CEO of Equal Rights Restaurant, had allegedly started renovations on the building, including the addition of new pillars, without informing the necessary regulatory bodies.

It was reported that the two bodies discovered on Monday were staff members of Equal Rights Restaurant, a popular spot for locals on the ground floor.

Survivors, primarily adult females, are currently receiving treatment at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH).

The Lagos State government has arrested the building’s owner, Mr. Sani Salau, who is expected to face legal consequences.

A resident at the site, visibly distraught, shared that a 22-year-old restaurant worker, Ayomide Adebola, is feared to be trapped.

A disc jockey who survived the incident explained that he noticed a shifting pillar and falling blocks, prompting him to raise an alarm.

“I rushed upstairs to warn others, but some didn’t take me seriously. I left with a few people just before the building collapsed,” he recalled.

Alhaji Abdulganiu Sani, Chairman of the All Ojodu Communities Development Association, criticized LASBCA for failing to properly oversee the building’s condition, arguing that it should have been marked for demolition.

LASBCA spokesperson, Ademuyiwa Adu, responded by noting that although residents were aware of the building’s deteriorating state, they failed to report it to the agency or the nearby Lagos State Material Testing Laboratory (LSMTL).

Meanwhile, scavengers tried to invade the site to remove reinforcement bars from the wreckage but were stopped by police and LASBCA officials.

Only a designated truck was allowed to remove the iron bars.

IGP Orders Immediate Withdrawal Of MOPOL Officers From Unauthorized Assignments

In a decisive move aimed at curbing the escalating wave of violence and killings in parts of Nigeria, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered the withdrawal of Police Mobile Force (PMF) personnel from unauthorized deployments.

Speaking during a high-level meeting with PMF Squadron Commanders, Egbetokun directed that all units begin a firm but gradual disengagement from non-core duties.

This follows persistent insecurity in Plateau, Benue, the Southeast, and other regions.

“Directives have already been issued concerning the withdrawal of PMF personnel from unauthorized deployments. All commanders are to enforce this directive without delay. A firm but gradual withdrawal from non-core assignments is underway,” the IGP stated.

He noted that the PMF, originally established as a tactical arm of the police to address riots, emergencies, and crises, has over time deviated from its core mandate.

“Regrettably, this foundational mandate has been compromised over time. A significant number of PMF personnel are deployed as escorts, guards, or aides to private individuals and VIPs. This diversion weakens our capacity to respond where needed most,” he said.

To restore efficiency, the IGP announced that the size and operational structure of PMF squadrons will be reviewed and streamlined.

He also expressed concern over growing indiscipline among officers, particularly those attached to unauthorized duties, stressing that such misconduct has undermined public trust in the Force.

“Indiscipline and misconduct within the PMF will no longer be tolerated. Today marks the beginning of a new era—one defined by accountability, discipline, and a recommitment to our founding values,” Egbetokun declared.

Moving forward, each squadron is mandated to maintain at least one fully equipped and combat-ready unit on standby for tactical operations.

Moreover, squadrons must designate one unit for quarterly training focused on ethics, professionalism, and responsible policing.

“Commanders will be held vicariously accountable for the conduct of their personnel and are expected to lead through regular lectures, inspections, and localized training programs that reinforce discipline and human rights,” he added.

Emphasizing the urgency of restoring the PMF’s elite status, the IGP said “The PMF must once again emerge as the elite tactical unit it was intended to be—disciplined, professional, and ready to defend the nation.”

Egbetokun also raised alarm over the growing threat posed by coordinated attacks on security personnel by different violent groups, from separatists in the Southeast to terrorists in the Northeast.

He said this challenge necessitates a unified and well-coordinated security response.

He revealed that the recently created Special Intervention Squad (SIS) would complement PMF operations in conflict areas.

“Security is a shared responsibility. Our success depends on trust, respect, and cooperation with all sister security agencies,” he said.

As part of broader reforms, the IGP announced a comprehensive reorganization of the PMF.

This will include a substantial reduction in VIP escorts and guard duties to refocus on violent crime prevention and national security protection.

“Our focus now is on combating violent crimes and safeguarding national security. We are injecting new leadership perspectives and continuous capacity-building to restore the PMF to its rightful role in internal security and tactical excellence,” he concluded.

Prepare To Handover In 2027 – PDP Tells Governor Otti

Stakeholders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abia North Senatorial District have expressed strong confidence in their ability to reclaim the governorship seat from Governor Alex Otti and the Labour Party in the 2027 general elections.

The leaders, drawn from the five local government areas of Abia North—Ohafia, Bende, Isuikwuato, Arochukwu, and Umunneochi—made their position known at a stakeholders’ meeting held in Abiriba, Ohafia LGA.

They emphasized the importance of unity and urged members to set aside personal interests and work collectively to rebuild the party ahead of the polls.

The five PDP local government chairmen at the meeting affirmed that the party remains solid in their respective domains.

They highlighted increased unity among members and ongoing reconciliation efforts aimed at mending past grievances.

Speaking at the gathering, State PDP Chairman Elder Amah Abraham reaffirmed the party’s commitment to fielding candidates with strong grassroots support.

“In 2027, we will be giving party tickets to the choice of the people. When we do this, we are sure of victory of the governorship seat and majority seats in the House of Assembly. PDP is still very strong in Abia North and the other 12 LGAs.

“The saboteurs have left our party. Anybody who sabotages PDP again will bear the consequences. The only saving grace for such person is to leave the party. I have absolute confidence that the PDP will remain the Abia Government House in 2027. The party is well positioned to achieve this,” Abraham said.

PDP Abia North Zonal Chairman, Chief Gabriel Elendu, also expressed optimism, saying the party is on track to reclaim its winning streak.

He pledged that only candidates with credibility and electoral viability would secure tickets.

He stated, “The party could return to its winning ways, stressing that come 2027, the PDP would only give tickets to credible candidates who also have the capacity to win elections and would not disappoint the party.”

Encouraging members to remain steadfast, Elendu urged them not to be discouraged by recent challenges.

Similarly, Chief Mandela Obasi, member representing Ohafia North in the Abia State House of Assembly, dismissed speculation about his defection.

He pledged unwavering support for the PDP and reaffirmed his commitment to its resurgence.

“I am not leaving PDP, but would stand firm and support the party until it reclaims its lost glory,” Obasi said.

“My people, the Abiriba, are renowned warriors who do not retreat in the face of adversity.”

As the highest-ranking PDP lawmaker from Abia North, Obasi vowed to lead the charge toward the party’s revival.

Chief Emmanuel Ndubuisi, who represents Bende South in the House, echoed similar sentiments, declaring loyalty to the PDP and encouraging leaders to act in the best interest of their supporters.

In response to recent defections in the Isuikwuato council area, key stakeholders including PDP Assistant National Legal Adviser Okechukwu Osuoha, Hon. Emmanuel Okoronkwo, and Chief Ndubuisi Etugo Ogah addressed the departure of Hon. Lucky Johnson to the Labour Party.

They insisted that his exit had no negative impact on the PDP’s structure in the area.

“The defection has galvanized greater support among party members, as the PDP in Isuikwuato council is stronger and better positioned since his exit,” they maintained.

Trump’s ‘Interference’ In Higher Education Unprecedented, Worrisome – Over 100 US Universities Protest

More than 100 American universities, including top Ivy League institutions such as Princeton and Brown, have issued a joint letter strongly criticizing what they describe as President Donald Trump’s growing “political interference” in the nation’s education system.

This unified stance follows a lawsuit filed by Harvard University against the Trump administration, which has threatened to withhold federal funding and impose political oversight on universities over claims of campus misconduct and ideological bias.

“We speak with one voice against the unprecedented government overreach and political interference now endangering American higher education,” the universities stated in their open letter.

While acknowledging the importance of constructive reforms and proper government oversight, the letter emphasized the need to “oppose undue government intrusion,” particularly when public research funding is used as leverage.

“We must reject the coercive use of public research funding,” the statement added.

President Trump has launched an aggressive campaign against several elite universities, accusing them of allowing antisemitic behavior on campuses, especially during pro-Palestinian protests tied to Israel’s war in Gaza.

The administration has threatened to revoke federal support, target their tax-exempt status, and restrict the enrollment of international students.

The universities, however, reaffirmed their commitment to academic freedom and open dialogue.

“We are committed to serving as places where faculty, students, and staff are free to exchange ideas and opinions across a full range of viewpoints without fear of retribution, censorship, or deportation,” the letter read.

Trump’s broader push against higher education has included threats to defund diversity and inclusion initiatives and an expanded immigration crackdown affecting foreign students—many of whom have seen their visas revoked without clear justification.

The White House has defended these actions, citing the need to address antisemitism and roll back what it calls the excessive influence of left-wing ideologies on campus.

Critics, however, argue that the administration is using isolated incidents to justify a broader political agenda.

Harvard University, in particular, has become a central target in this clash.

The administration is reportedly seeking unprecedented control over Harvard’s admissions and faculty hiring practices.

After resisting these demands, Harvard was hit with an order last week to freeze $2.2 billion in federal funding.

In response, the university filed a lawsuit calling the move unlawful and demanding a reversal of the funding freeze, along with full legal costs.

Adding to the pressure, the Department of Homeland Security has warned that Harvard could lose its ability to enroll international students unless it hands over detailed records of visa holders allegedly involved in “illegal and violent activities.”

According to Harvard’s website, international students currently make up 27.2 percent of its student body.

Despite mounting political pressure, the institutions say they remain firm in defending the independence and values of American higher education.

IMF Cuts Nigeria’s 2025 Economic Growth Outlook To 3.0%

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has lowered its economic growth projection for Nigeria in 2025 to 3.0%, attributing the downgrade to declining global oil prices.

This updated forecast is outlined in the IMF’s April 2025 World Economic Outlook (WEO), which was released during the ongoing Spring Meetings of the IMF and World Bank in Washington, DC.

The revised estimate marks a 0.2 percentage point drop from the Fund’s earlier forecast of 3.2% for the same year.

According to the report: “For sub-Saharan Africa, growth is expected to decline slightly from 4.0% in 2024 to 3.8% in 2025, before recovering modestly to 4.2% in 2026.

“Among the larger economies, the growth forecast for Nigeria is revised downward by 0.2 percentage point for 2025 and 0.3 percentage point for 2026, owing to lower oil prices.”

Other leading African economies are also facing similar downgrades due to a combination of economic headwinds.

The IMF highlighted “In South Africa, the growth forecast is revised downward by 0.5 percentage point for 2025 and 0.3 percentage point for 2026, reflecting slowing momentum from a weaker-than-expected 2024 performance, deteriorating sentiment due to heightened uncertainty, intensification of protectionist policies, and a deeper slowdown in major economies.”

The report also delivered a sharp revision for South Sudan, citing ongoing disruptions in oil production “South Sudan has a downward revision of 31.5 percentage points for 2025 due to delays in resuming oil production following damage to a key pipeline.”
