Minna Airport To Begin Commercial Flight Operations

 

Commercial flight operations are set to commence at the newly inaugurated Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Airport in Minna, Niger State, starting April 23, 2025.

This development follows a strategic partnership between the Niger State Government and Overland Airways Limited.

At a press briefing held in Minna, Captain Edward Boyo, CEO of Overland Airways, hailed the collaboration as a significant stride in fulfilling Governor Mohammed Umar Bago’s vision of infrastructural progress.

“This initiative reflects our shared commitment to enhancing national connectivity. Our collaboration with the state government demonstrates that strategic partnerships can bring development closer to the people,” Boyo said.

He further emphasized that the initiative would boost the state’s profile as a destination for trade, tourism, and investment.

Also speaking at the event, Alhaji Liman Katamba Kutigi, Chief Operating Officer of New Niger Aviation, described the project as more than just the launch of flight services.

“By partnering with Overland Airways, we are setting a new benchmark for regional air connectivity rooted in safety, reliability, and growth. Our goal is to establish Niger State as a key player in Nigeria’s aviation and logistics corridor,” he stated.

The commissioning of the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Airport marks a critical component of the state’s broader plan to modernize infrastructure and spur economic transformation across the region.

The new routes will initially link Minna to Abuja and Lagos, offering improved access and mobility for residents and visitors alike.

Father, Son, Two Others Die In Bauchi Water Plant Tragedy

 

A heartbreaking incident unfolded on Sunday at the Gubi Water Treatment Plant in Bauchi State, where four workers, including a father and his son, lost their lives during a routine cleaning operation.

The victims—Shu’aibu Hamza, his son Abdulmalik Ibrahim Hamza, Ibrahim Musa, and Jamilu Yunusa—were staff members of the Bauchi State Water Supply Agency.

All four were laid to rest shortly after the incident, in accordance with Islamic burial rites.

DAILY GAZETTE reports that the father and son, who were working in preparation for Abdulmalik’s upcoming wedding in two weeks, were among those who drowned while conducting maintenance work in one of the facility’s reservoirs.

Malam Husseini Abubakar, a resident of Gubi village where the plant is located, described the situation as a devastating blow to the entire community.

“It is the will of Allah. He gives and takes life. As painful as this is, there is nothing anyone can do—this was destined to happen,” Abubakar said.

He recounted that the incident began when one of the victims entered the reservoir to retrieve a fish that had been spotted.

A second person tried to rescue him but also drowned, followed by the father and son who were likewise caught in the tragic chain of events.

Another resident, Musa Muhammad, called on the grieving families to remain strong and accept the situation with faith.

“While incidents like this have occurred before, this is the most tragic, claiming four lives at once,” he said.

As at the time of this report, the Bauchi State Commissioner for Water Resources, Abdulrazak Nuhu Zaki, had yet to issue a statement or respond to inquiries about the incident.

Six Dead, 14 Injured In Series Of Crashes On Abuja-Lokoja Road

 

A series of tragic accidents on the Abuja-Lokoja highway at Gada-Biyu have claimed the lives of six passengers and 11 cows between Thursday and Saturday, with 14 other people sustaining various degrees of injury.

Eyewitnesses said the crashes occurred at the same location and involved multiple vehicles, including a trailer transporting cows, a Toyota Sienna, a J5 Peugeot bus, and a Daf trailer.

One of the witnesses, Dahiru Musa, blamed the incidents on diversions created due to ongoing rehabilitation work on deteriorating sections of the highway.

“But the fatal one of the accidents was that involving a trailer loaded with cows and a J5 Peugeot bus, in which two people from the bus were burnt to death,” Musa said.

Emergency response personnel from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) were dispatched to the scene, where they evacuated the injured and retrieved the remains of those who lost their lives.

A senior FRSC official, who took part in the rescue effort and chose to remain anonymous, confirmed the series of accidents. He also pointed to road diversions as the main cause.

He stated, “Six people died while 14 others sustained injuries,” adding that 11 cows also perished when the trailer collided with the J5 Peugeot bus.

The injured victims were transported to general hospitals in Abaji and Kwali, while the corpses were deposited at the Kwali hospital morgue.

In the aftermath, our reporter learned that eight surviving cows, which were badly injured, were slaughtered at the crash site by their owners.

Butchers from Gada-Biyu village later came to purchase the meat.

Efforts to reach the FCT sector commander of the FRSC, Mr. Muta’ah Chorrie, were unsuccessful as he was reportedly out of the country at the time of the incidents.

Man Ends Marriage At Police Station After Wife’s Arrest In Hotel Raid

 

Drama unfolded at a police station in Minna, Niger State, when a man abruptly divorced his wife after she was apprehended during a hotel raid targeting suspected criminals.

The woman was among several individuals arrested by security personnel in an operation targeting hotels believed to harbor sara-suka gang members and drug dealers.

A security operative, who requested anonymity, told DAILY GAZETTE that the woman’s marital status was only discovered after those arrested were taken to the station and their families were contacted.

“Following the recurring youth restiveness and attacks on innocent citizens, the Deputy Governor, Comrade Yakubu Garba, after going round Minna recently, directed security operatives to go after the youths causing the unrest and stopping innocent citizens from going about their businesses,” he said.

The source added, “We embarked on the operation at some hotels suspected to be their hideouts. During the operations, many suspects were arrested, including women. And to our surprise, a man came to say that one of the women was his wife and instantly, he divorced her three times.”

“We didn’t know that she was married and did not know what took her there because police had not yet conducted investigation about the suspects when the husband came to the station.”

The police are yet to conclude investigations into the circumstances surrounding the arrests.

Enugu Airport Runway Fails Again, Five Years After Costly Rehabilitation

 

The Federal Government’s recent decision to shut down the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu has stirred mixed reactions, coming just five years after the facility underwent a major rehabilitation.

The airport, which is the South East’s only international gateway, was temporarily closed for emergency runway repairs.

This comes after the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari had in 2019 approved N10 billion for the overhaul of the runway and other infrastructural improvements.

Following the repairs, the then Minister of Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika, reopened the airport, restoring relief to travelers across the region who had endured months of inconvenience due to the earlier closure and flight diversions.

However, despite the completed rehabilitation and the asphalting of the runway, the facility has again developed structural faults, forcing the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) to take emergency action.

Air Peace, the leading carrier operating at the airport, was the first to announce a suspension of its flights, citing safety hazards.

Confirming this in a statement, Dr. Ejike Ndiulo, Head of Corporate Communications for the airline, noted that “safety issues at Enugu Airport have been causing disruption to Air Peace flights.”

Subsequently, FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Obiageli Orah, issued a statement on the airport’s closure.

She explained it was necessary due to “a sudden and significant rupture in the asphalt surface at a critical section of the runway.”

She further noted, “In compliance with Nigerian civil aviation regulations, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has, therefore, closed the runway during this period.”

“As part of FAAN’s commitment to passenger safety and the modernisation of airport facilities, the runway will not be open for landings or takeoffs during the rehabilitation period.”

The emergency repairs are scheduled to take place from April 22 to May 6, 2025.

In the meantime, airlines are diverting operations to nearby airports, including the Sam Mbakwe Airport in Owerri and the Asaba Airport in Delta State.

Serving key commercial towns such as Onitsha, Nnewi, Awka, Abakaliki, and Idah, the Enugu airport is critical to air travel in the region.

According to sources, pilots had recently begun reporting hard landings, pointing to the runway’s deteriorating condition.

A source familiar with the airport operations disclosed that the underlying issue was a waterlogged section which the 2020 rehabilitation failed to fix.

“So, anytime it rains, the waterlogged portion of the runway continues to weaken the asphalted surface, making landing bumpy for aircraft,” the source said.

Addressing the issue, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN, confirmed the airport would be shut from April 22. Offering an apology to Nigerians, he said, “The airport is our major international gateway in the Southeastern part of Nigeria.”

He recalled that the runway had been closed in 2019 for similar reasons and the contract for its full rehabilitation was awarded. However, on assumption of office, he discovered a major flaw in the work.

“Unfortunately, when we came to the office, we discovered that a waterlogged part of the runway was not properly constructed to take care of the problem, leading to constant cracks and potholes on the runway.”

“These obviously put the lives of the travelling public at great risk,” he stated.

“We have been carrying out constant palliative works on it, but the problem has not abated and the cracks on the runway are becoming craters.”

“I personally visited the airport some months after assuming office and expressed my total displeasure with the work done by the contractor,” Keyamo added.

He assured travelers that flight operations would be redirected to nearby airports and pledged to complete the repairs within the announced timeframe.

“We are going to work tirelessly to meet the timeline in order to mitigate the inconvenience this closure will cause the travelling public,” he said.

A former senior FAAN official told DAILY GAZETTE that the persistent problem could only be permanently solved with an engineering redesign.

He suggested building a culvert beneath the runway to drain water from the area.

Also weighing in, aviation expert Group Capt. John Ojikutu (rtd) blamed the recurring failures on a lack of technical oversight.

“It is all because the political office holders are the ones in charge and not the professional operators and the necessary concern for the regulatory authority,” he said.

Enugu Unveils Ambitious Rail Project Linking South-East To Onne Port

The Enugu State Government has revealed plans for a transformative rail infrastructure project—a 135.5-kilometre standard gauge railway designed to link key cities in the South-East region to Onne Port in Rivers State.

Speaking on Afia TV’s “Enugu Kwenu” programme, the State Commissioner for Transportation, Obi Ozor, disclosed that the rail line will be entirely state-owned and is part of a broader strategy to stimulate economic development across the region.

“The line we are about to build is state-owned. It is a 135.5km standard gauge line that connects Enugu to all major cities in the South-East. You are going to see a proper connection to Anambra through Ugwuoba, and a connection to Ebonyi through the Amechi Idodo axis.”

“And of course, connections to Umuahia, Abia, and Owerri through the line that passes through Nkanu West to Isiagu and goes all the way to Onne Port,” Ozor explained.

According to him, the feasibility study for the railway has been concluded.

The state government is collaborating with the Nigerian Railway Corporation and Chinese partners, while negotiations with potential investors are ongoing to secure the necessary financing.

Ozor emphasized that the project is critical to Enugu’s goal of becoming a central trade and export hub in Nigeria.

“As part of turning Enugu State into a hub, rail is a critical component to enable the movement of agro-commodities from their sources all the way to the port for export and earning of foreign exchange,” he noted.

He highlighted the region’s vast, untapped mineral wealth, particularly coal, and stressed that a modern transport system is essential to unlock these resources.

“We have a lot of wealth locked beneath our soil, such as coal. We need to exploit them to generate significant revenue, and rail is critical to achieving this,” he said.

The planned railway will serve both passenger and freight needs.

Ozor pointed out that the line will enhance goods movement across the region and reduce congestion at Lagos ports. It will also improve trade links with neighboring states, including Delta.

A new station at the Holy Ghost Transport Terminal in Enugu is also part of the plan.

This station will serve dual purposes—handling passengers and freight.

In addition, Enugu is preparing to establish a major inland container port to support the processing and movement of agricultural products across both the South-East and North-East.

While the Federal Government is concurrently working on extending its rail from Aba to Enugu within the next 24 months, Ozor clarified that Enugu’s initiative is a separate, state-driven effort.

He said it aligns with the state’s broader vision for long-term economic transformation.

Youth Conference To Begin Grassroots Sessions In June – Minister

 

Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, has announced that grassroots sessions of the National Youth Conference will officially commence in the first week of June.

This follows the March 10 inauguration of the national planning committee by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Providing updates on the preparations, the minister explained that consultations with Nigerian youths in the diaspora and through online platforms will begin by the end of May.

“By next month, the Diaspora and online engagements will start. When I return to Abuja, we’ll look at the next report and we’ll get to build a big website for that purpose that can engage as many as possible,” Olawande revealed.

“I can tell you that before May 29, the Diaspora and social platform engagements will start, and that one will go on so that they can collate all those ideas together.”

He further confirmed that in-person sessions at the grassroots level will immediately follow, covering all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The goal is to decentralize the process and ensure inclusivity.

“Work is ongoing. I think they are currently at sub-committee levels because since it’s not going to be concentrated in Abuja, we’ll be going to the grassroots, so there’ll be local organising committees in all the 36 states and the FCT, whereby the process will be managed by both government and the private sector,” he said.

Each state’s committee will include youth commissioners and representatives from the local private sector.

According to Olawande, the conference is not politically driven, although a small percentage of participants will come from political party youth wings.

“It is not a political thing, but there’s no way we won’t still consider politics because like in the committee we have representatives of all national youth leaders of all political parties.

“We will also ensure that the representation of the political parties’ youth forums, all of them put together, will be just 1%. We’ll allow the process to be driven by the NGOs and all such organisations that will participate,” he explained.

Addressing questions around financing, the minister clarified that the event is not a platform for distributing funds and will rely on modest donations and support from development partners rather than large government funding.

“We’re being mindful of our current financial state. We’re not doing any fundraising. It is a confab, but it is not a confab where we’ll be sharing money, no. If you really want to join us to discuss, please come, but don’t expect that we will be sharing money there. Nobody will give you millions in the name of confab,” he stated.

He added that interest from diplomatic missions such as the United States and Qatar embassies was visible during the committee’s inauguration, suggesting support from international partners.

Olawande stressed that the structure of the conference reflects the diverse realities of Nigerian youth, particularly across rural and underserved areas.

Having visited 28 of Nigeria’s 36 states, he observed that youth concerns vary widely by region.

“In my travels, I have discovered that the demands and desires are varying. What youths from one state or district or constituency or local government want are different from others.

“For instance, demands and desires of youths from two different senatorial districts within the same state are different; they have their peculiarities,” he explained.

He emphasized that centralizing the conference in Abuja would pose significant challenges, especially in selecting delegates fairly, given the fragmented nature of youth groups nationwide.

“To select delegates for an elders’ confab is easier because every community or nationality knows its elder statesman.”

“But for youths, just a political party can have over 101,000 youth groups. Youth groups are uncountable. So is it possible to accommodate all youth organisations? No,” he said.

As a solution, the conference will adopt a senatorial district-level format to strike a balance between representation and logistical feasibility.

“So why not take it to the people that really need this conversation? Why not say okay, if because we can’t do 360 federal constituencies because of financial constraints, why not do 109 senatorial districts?” he asked.

The National Youth Conference aims to create a unified platform for young Nigerians to express their concerns, shape national discourse, and contribute meaningfully to the country’s development agenda.

National Assembly Working On State Police Law To Tackle Insecurity – Senate Leader, Bamidele

 

Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele has disclosed that the National Assembly is actively crafting a legal framework to facilitate the creation of state police across Nigeria, aimed at addressing growing insecurity.

In a statement issued through his Directorate of Media and Public Affairs in celebration of the Easter holiday, Bamidele urged law enforcement agencies to ramp up their efforts in arresting and prosecuting those involved in killings, abductions, and destruction of property throughout the country.

“As we celebrate the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ our Lord, it is exigent we reflect on His virtues; learn from His consecration and live His life of purpose rooted in the pursuit of justice, love and redemption for humanity,” Bamidele said.

He emphasized Christ’s life as a guide for Nigerians to live in unity: “Despite the animosity He suffered and opposition He faced, Jesus Christ consciously sought and secured freedom for the captives, peace for the troubled, comfort for the sorrowful, love for the dejected, justice for the oppressed and hope for those who are in despair.”

“In Nigeria today, Christ’s example clearly presents us a glimpse of how we should live together as compatriots and not competitors, collaborators and not combatants, comrades and not contenders in the task of building a viable and virile federation that will serve the interest of all.”

He condemned recent violent incidents in Benue and Plateau States, saying, “The recent killings in Benue and Plateau States outrightly negated the virtues of peace and love that Jesus Christ taught during His days.”

Bamidele also criticized inflammatory remarks by some public figures: “The recurrent utterances by some political and sectional figures also belied the values of courage, perseverance and tolerance He evidently lived for.”

“No country develops as a result of one section rising up against another and vice versa,” he warned.

Commenting on the National Assembly’s initiative, he noted, “While the Authority of the National Assembly is in the process of developing legal frameworks for the establishment of state police as one of the measures to address insecurity in the country, we urge security agencies to work together as a team to track and apprehend all the masterminds and sponsors of terror attacks nationwide.”

He called on political leaders to avoid exploiting national challenges for personal gain: “We appeal to some political actors that always latch on the country’s challenges to push divisive narratives to learn from the example of Jesus Christ.”

“Such actors are no longer playing opposition politics, but simply taking advantage of the country’s internal conditions in the pursuit of their own parochial political outcomes.”

Bamidele reaffirmed the commitment of the legislature: “Nigeria is our ultimate project. As a parliament, we are committed to the actualisation of this project. This is evident in all the legislative initiatives we are pushing since the birth of the 10th National Assembly.”

“Our goal is to build a federation that will be noted for peace, progress and prosperity anywhere in the world.”

He urged all stakeholders to set aside ethnic, political, and religious differences: “Regardless of their ethnicity, politics and religion, all actors should shun all forms of divisive utterance and join forces against the common foes of Nigeria and not to subvert our effort to build a strong and virile federation.”

In his closing remarks, he extended Easter greetings and encouraged Nigerians “to consciously reflect on the virtues of Jesus Christ.

Two Nollywood Actors Found Dead In Owerri

 

A somber mood has descended on Nollywood following the shocking death of two actors in Owerri, Imo State, after attending a house party.

The incident, which occurred last Friday, happened shortly after the crew wrapped up a film shoot and gathered at the residence of one of their directors for a celebration.

Reports say the actors had eaten rice and consumed wine and Calypso during the party.

Four individuals were reportedly affected—two were found lifeless, while the remaining two were taken to the hospital in an unconscious state.

Medical sources say the surviving victims are now showing signs of recovery.

The situation took a more complex turn with a contradictory version offered by a man identified as Kaito Karisia.

According to him, the story given by the host of the party was “incoherent.”

Karisia explained that the host claimed he had left the others in the parlour and gone to bed. At approximately 4:00 a.m., he said he woke up to switch from generator power to electricity.

When he returned to the parlour, he allegedly found one individual dead and the others unconscious, prompting him to raise an alarm.

The Imo State Police Command has officially confirmed the occurrence. Police Public Relations Officer, Henry Okoye, said:

“The command is aware of the unfortunate incident of unnatural death. I can confirm that two people were pronounced dead while two others were hospitalised.”

Okoye further revealed that the state Commissioner of Police, CP Aboki Danjuma, has directed a thorough investigation into the matter.

He said an autopsy will be conducted on the deceased to establish the cause of death.

“The results will determine the next line of action on the matter,” he added.

While investigations are ongoing, sources have disclosed that some arrests have already been made, including members of the film production team and directors.

The names of the deceased actors remain undisclosed at the time of filing this report.

US Supreme Court Restrains Trump From Deporting Migrants

 

In a late-night decision on Saturday, the US Supreme Court issued an emergency order blocking President Donald Trump’s controversial plan to deport Venezuelan migrants under the centuries-old Alien Enemies Act.

The decision came just hours before dozens of Venezuelans were scheduled for removal, raising major constitutional questions.

Two of the Supreme Court’s most conservative justices dissented from the ruling, which temporarily stops the use of the 1798 law—previously employed during World War II—to expel migrants without judicial oversight.

Trump recently invoked the law to authorize the deportation of Venezuelans to CECOT, a notorious prison in El Salvador known for housing the country’s most violent gang members.

The court’s emergency intervention was prompted by Friday night’s imminent deportations, where affected individuals faced removal without the chance to present evidence or contest their cases in court.

The justices stated in their order: “The government is directed not to remove any member of the putative class of detainees from the United States until further order.”

President Trump defended his administration’s policy as a necessary step to combat organized crime.

He maintained that the deportations, including detention in El Salvador, were targeting “violent Venezuelan criminal gangs” that had been labeled as terrorist groups by the US government.

Nevertheless, critics argue that the use of the Alien Enemies Act is part of a broader strategy by Trump to undermine constitutional safeguards and concentrate power.

The administration has also intensified pressure on major law firms, media institutions, and universities such as Harvard.

The American Civil Liberties Union, which led the legal charge to stop the expulsions, hailed the court’s ruling.

“These men were in imminent danger of spending their lives in a horrific foreign prison without ever having had a chance to go to court,” said attorney Lee Gelernt.

In response, the US government filed a motion urging the Supreme Court to lift the block on deportations and uphold the president’s authority under the Alien Enemies Act.

They also requested that, if the court insists on maintaining the pause, it should clarify that other laws could still be used to carry out deportations.

Trump’s hardline immigration stance was central to his electoral campaign last November, where he repeatedly warned of what he called an “invasion” of criminal elements crossing the US border.

His administration has deployed troops to the Mexican border, imposed trade tariffs on Mexico and Canada over border security concerns, and designated gangs like MS-13 and Tren de Aragua as terrorist entities.

Right-wing activist Laura Loomer defended Trump’s approach, stating on Saturday that the president was “gracious” for deporting illegal entrants rather than having them “shot to death” at the border.

Civil rights advocates and Democratic leaders have voiced deep concern about what they view as violations of due process.

Under the administration’s interpretation of the Alien Enemies Act—previously only used during wartime—some migrants have been deported without facing charges or seeing a judge.

President Trump has even proposed sending American citizens convicted of violent crimes to the El Salvador prison CECOT.

Legal teams representing several deported Venezuelans argue that many were singled out for their appearance, particularly tattoos.

One high-profile case involved Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Maryland resident deported last month. The Trump administration later admitted the deportation occurred due to an “administrative error.”

Even after a court ordered his return to the US, Trump continued to label him a gang member, posting a manipulated image online Friday that appeared to show “MS-13” inked across his knuckles.

As legal battles mount, the president and his allies have turned their ire toward the judiciary.

They’ve accused the courts of political bias, and right-wing commentator Jesse Kelly took to social media to protest the ruling, declaring: “Ignore the Supreme Court.”
