Russian President Vladimir Putin has declared a short-term ceasefire in the ongoing conflict with Ukraine to mark the Christian celebration of Easter.

The truce, which begins Saturday evening, is expected to last until midnight on Sunday.

“Today from 1800 (1500 GMT) to midnight Sunday (2100 GMT Sunday), the Russian side announces an Easter truce,” Putin said during televised remarks to Russian Chief of Staff Valery Gerasimov.

The decision comes amid continued efforts by former U.S. President Donald Trump, who has been pushing both Russia and Ukraine to agree to a temporary halt in hostilities.

However, those efforts have yet to result in any meaningful concessions from the Kremlin.

Putin described the move as a humanitarian gesture.

“I order for this period to stop all military action,” he stated, calling it “based on humanitarian reasons.”

Easter, a significant occasion for Christians across the globe, will be observed this Sunday.

Putin expressed hope that Ukraine would also honor the ceasefire, though he instructed Russian forces to remain vigilant.

“We are going on the basis that the Ukrainian side will follow our example, while our troops must be ready to resist possible breaches of the truce and provocations by the enemy, any aggressive actions,” he warned.

The Russian president also accused Ukraine of repeatedly violating prior understandings.

“More than 100 times… breached an agreement on not striking energy infrastructure,” Putin said, quoting Gerasimov.

Just a day earlier, Moscow officially ended a self-imposed moratorium on targeting Ukrainian energy systems.

Both Russia and Ukraine have accused each other of violating an informal agreement regarding these critical facilities.

Putin suggested that this ceasefire could serve as a test of Ukraine’s sincerity in engaging with future diplomatic efforts.

“The latest truce proposal will show how sincere is the Kyiv’s regime’s readiness, its desire and ability to observe agreements and participate in a process of peace talks,” he said.

This is not the first time ceasefire efforts have surfaced around religious holidays.

Similar proposals during Easter in April 2022 and Orthodox Christmas in January 2023 collapsed due to a lack of mutual agreement.

Bauchi Deputy Governor Denies Slapping Foreign Affairs Minister, Labels Viral Report ‘Fake’

Bauchi State Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Muhammad Auwal Jatau, has categorically denied reports making the rounds on social media and other platforms alleging that he slapped the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alhaji Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, during a state event on Friday.

The alleged altercation was said to have taken place in a white coaster bus transporting dignitaries from Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa International Airport to the Emir’s Palace in Bauchi for the turbaning ceremony of former Governor Mohammed Abubakar.

According to the widely circulated but unverified claims, an argument erupted after Minister Tuggar allegedly made disparaging remarks about Governor Bala Mohammed.

This, the reports suggested, provoked a heated response from Jatau, who supposedly slapped the minister in full view of Vice President Kashim Shettima and other top officials.

In response to these claims, Jatau’s media aide, Muslim Lawal, dismissed the story as entirely false and unfounded.

“No, no, no, how can the deputy Governor slap the Minister? I don’t think that ever happened in Bauchi because I know my principal is a responsible person,” Lawal said.

“The number two person cannot slap a Minister or whoever person that people are talking about. We are not even aware of that. I am just hearing this from you.”

He went on to challenge the authenticity of the reports and questioned the absence of concrete proof.

“Did you see the evidence of the slap? I didn’t see it, I’m just hearing about that from you. But my belief is that there is no way the deputy Governor will slap a Minister. I don’t think such can ever happen in Bauchi, not even my principal or whoever is in his position.”

“What is even the issue that will make the deputy Governor slap a Minister? I was not in the car and if there is any evidence that the Deputy Governor did such, maybe we can speak on that, but as of now, I don’t even know about it. That’s our position. And I don’t even think that the Deputy Governor, even if it is not in the presence of the Vice President can do that,” Lawal added.

Meanwhile, the Governor’s son, Shamsudeen Bala Mohammed, appeared to fuel the controversy by reposting several Facebook posts celebrating Jatau’s alleged actions.

One of the reposted messages from Daure David read: “The First Deputy Governor to slap a Minister in Bauchi. Mr. Taka kasha mari. #Boris.”

Another post he shared said: “Breaking News: Tension in Bauchi as Deputy Governor reportedly slaps Minister of Foreign Affairs.”

He also reposted a Hausa-language comment that stated: “Yau deputy govna ya jadada loyaltyn sa wa baba Kaura,” which translates to, “Today, the Deputy Governor reaffirmed his loyalty to Baba Kaura (Governor Bala Mohammed).”

Another said: “Idan zai zagi Kaura sau Goma, Jatau zai masa mari sau goma kyawawa..!” Meaning, “If he will abuse or insult Kaura 10 times, Jatau will give him 10 hot slaps.”

The controversy appears rooted in a long-standing political rivalry between Governor Mohammed and Minister Tuggar.

Their strained relationship reportedly intensified following the Governor’s open criticism of the Tinubu administration in the aftermath of the #EndBadGovernanceProtest in 2023.

Tuggar, known for his loyalty to President Bola Tinubu and rumored ambitions to contest the Bauchi governorship in 2027, has previously accused Governor Mohammed of incompetence and political showmanship.

As of now, no independent evidence has emerged to substantiate the claim of physical assault.

JAMB Announces New Date For 2025 UTME

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced a slight adjustment to the start date of the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), which will now commence on Thursday, April 24, 2025.

The exam was initially slated to begin on Friday, April 25, but the board explained that the shift was necessary due to “essential commitments by the Board and its partner agencies.”

In a statement released on Saturday and signed by JAMB’s Public Communication Advisor, Fabian Benjamin, the board clarified the reason for the change: “The 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) is now set to commence on Thursday, April 24, 2025, instead of the previously scheduled date of Friday, April 25, 2025. This adjustment has been made to accommodate essential commitments by the Board and its partner agencies.”

As part of the preparation for the UTME, JAMB has activated its portal for candidates to print their examination notification slips.

“All candidates who have registered for the 2025 UTME scheduled to commence on Thursday, 24th April, 2025, are urged to print their 2025 UTME Notification Slips before the date of their examination,” the board stated.

These slips include key information such as exam date, time, and the specific centre where each candidate is expected to take the test.

To access the slip, candidates are advised to go to www.jamb.gov.ng, click on “2025 UTME Slip Printing,” enter their registration number, and select “Print Examination Slip.”

JAMB also urged students to become familiar with their centres ahead of time.

“Familiarise themselves with the location of their centres before the date of the examination,” the board advised, to avoid any confusion or delays on exam day.

The board emphasized that candidates must write the exam only at their assigned centres within their chosen examination towns.

“Please note that candidates will be assigned to centres within their chosen examination towns; no candidate will be placed in a centre outside their selected town,” JAMB warned, adding that no exceptions will be made in this regard.

No Investigation, No Grilling, Online Report Baseless – ECTDA Dismisses Reports Of Fraud Probe Against Chairman

The Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority (ECTDA) has dismissed recent online reports alleging that its Chairman was interrogated by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) over fraud allegations.

In a statement issued in Enugu on Saturday, Chief Gideon Onyia, the agency’s Director and Head of Administration, described the circulating claims as false and a calculated attempt to damage the reputation of the ECTDA.

Onyia expressed the agency’s surprise at the reports, stating that no official communication has been received from the ICPC suggesting any such development.

He clarified that while the ICPC had indeed contacted the agency, it was only to request specific documents and the presence of an official for an ongoing investigation.

Quoting a letter from the ICPC dated March 13, 2025, with reference number ICPC/ENU/INV/038/Vol.1/2025, Onyia noted: “The letter states: ‘The Commission wishes to inform you that the above referenced letters are yet to be complied with by your Authority and the Officer invited to come along with documents relevant to our investigation also refused to attend to our legitimate invitation.'”

According to him, the agency responded by advising the commission to follow due process by channeling its request through the office of the Secretary to the State Government (SSG).

“Rather than doing that,” Onyia continued, “the ICPC sent another letter on April 7, 2025, with reference number ICPC/ENU/INV/001/Vol2/2025, inviting our Chairman over complaints related to alleged violations of ICPC Act, which is not what has been reported by those spreading false information.”

He added that the agency formally responded on April 9, 2025, stating “the letter, which was received after the close of official working hours on April 8, 2025, is by implication received officially on April 9, 2025, the same date for appearing before your Commission for interview alongside other specified personnel outside our office. Obviously, it is very difficult to meet your invitation, considering your timeline.”

Onyia reiterated that correspondence involving government officials must go through the SSG.

“The SSG will in turn initiate the appropriate processes that will lead to the release of the concerned government official(s) along with relevant official documents as may be required by your Commission,” he added.

When approached for comment, the Chairman of ECTDA, Chief Uche Anya, refuted the grilling claims outright.

“How could I have been grilled for almost 24 hours when I am not under any form of investigation?” he asked.

Anya explained that the ICPC had notified the agency that their investigation covers activities between 2019 and 2023 — a period preceding his tenure — and had requested documents to aid the probe.

“I wrote back, indicating that they should direct the letter through the appropriate authority (the SSG), as we cannot release government documents just like that,” he said.

He further noted, “They responded, asserting their entitlement to collect any document or take action against anyone obstructing their investigation, claiming my failure to provide the documents amounted to obstruction.”

“Following this, they sent another letter expressing their displeasure which amounts to obstructing their investigation, and this led to their invitation letter on April 7, 2025 to which my office responded accordingly.”

In a move aimed at defusing any rising tension, Anya said he personally visited the ICPC headquarters to express willingness to cooperate, provided the process follows official protocol.

“The notion of being ‘grilled’ is unfounded and a total falsehood,” he concluded.

Take Decisive Action Against Insecurity, Killings In Nigeria – SDP To Tinubu

The national leadership of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has voiced grave concern over the worsening security situation in Nigeria, stressing that the growing incidents of violence and killings are endangering the nation’s stability.

In a statement issued by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Araba Rufus Aiyenigba, the SDP condemned the recent wave of violent attacks and expressed sorrow over the lives lost in multiple regions of the country.

The party emphasized that the government’s core responsibility is to protect its citizens and ensure their welfare, underscoring that any failure in this area reveals a critical lapse in governance.

“The disturbing reports of widespread killings in various regions—north and south—over the past weeks paint a troubling picture,” the statement read.

“These incidents, both reported and unreported, have created an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty for citizens.”

The SDP referenced specific violent incidents, including killings in Edo State, where individuals were reportedly killed due to being mistaken for outsiders.

The party also highlighted a brutal attack in Plateau State, where over a hundred lives were lost, and many homes were destroyed.

Additionally, an attack by a group known as ‘Makmuda’ was cited as evidence of the increasingly complex and dangerous security environment.

The statement also raised concerns about the inadequacy of current security frameworks, stressing that existing structures seem to be overwhelmed.

The SDP called for a clear and effective national security strategy to counter the growing threats.

“It is imperative that the government prioritizes the safety of Nigerians above all else,” the statement emphasized.

“President Tinubu, as the Commander-in-Chief, has a constitutional responsibility under Section 14(2)(b) of the Nigerian Constitution to ensure the welfare and security of all citizens.”

The SDP further urged the government to set aside political distractions and focus on tangible security solutions, warning that discussions on future elections should not overshadow the immediate need to address the ongoing crisis.

The party reaffirmed its commitment to fostering national unity and peace while calling for swift, coordinated actions to protect communities and restore public confidence in Nigeria’s leadership.

US To Withdraw 1,000 Troops From Syria

The United States plans to significantly reduce its military footprint in Syria, cutting the number of deployed troops to fewer than 1,000 in the coming months, the Pentagon announced on Friday.

American forces have maintained a presence in Syria for several years as part of international efforts to combat the Islamic State (IS) group, which emerged during the country’s civil war and seized large territories in both Syria and Iraq over a decade ago. Although IS has been largely defeated, remnants of the group remain active and continue to pose a threat.

“Today the secretary of defense directed the consolidation of US forces in Syria… to select locations,” Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said in a statement. He did not disclose where these consolidations would occur.

“This deliberate and conditions-based process will bring the US footprint in Syria down to less than 1,000 US forces in the coming months,” Parnell added.

He assured that despite the troop reduction, “US Central Command will remain poised to continue strikes against the remnants of (IS) in Syria.”

Former President Donald Trump, who has long questioned the need for US involvement in Syria, previously ordered a troop withdrawal during his first term, though some forces remained. After Islamist-led rebels launched a rapid offensive last December and ultimately overthrew Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Trump reiterated his stance that the US should not be entangled in Syria’s affairs.

“Syria is a mess, but is not our friend, & THE UNITED STATES SHOULD HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH IT. THIS IS NOT OUR FIGHT,” Trump wrote on Truth Social while serving as president-elect. “NOT GET INVOLVED!” he added.

Years of Conflict Against IS

The rise of IS in 2014 prompted a US-led coalition to launch an air campaign in support of ground forces, including the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and Iraqi military units. American troops were also deployed to advise, train, and assist local forces, and in some cases, engaged in direct combat against IS fighters.

Iraq declared victory over IS in December 2017, while the SDF declared the defeat of the so-called caliphate in March 2019 after capturing the group’s last stronghold in Syria. However, IS still maintains a presence in rural areas of both countries.

Following the fall of Assad’s regime, Washington intensified operations against IS in Syria but later shifted focus to countering Yemen’s Huthi rebels, who have attacked international maritime targets since 2023.

US forces stationed in Syria and Iraq also faced frequent attacks from Iranian-backed militias, particularly after the Gaza conflict erupted in October 2023. In response, the US launched retaliatory strikes, eventually curbing the wave of assaults.

Though the Pentagon had previously reported about 900 troops in Syria, a December 2024 update revealed the number had surged to around 2,000 earlier that year. The latest plan will now reduce that figure by roughly half.

In parallel, Iraq has called for an end to the US-led coalition’s mission on its soil. The US has about 2,500 troops in Iraq. Both countries have agreed to conclude coalition operations in federal Iraq by the end of 2025 and in the Kurdistan region by September 2026.

US May Exit Ukraine Peace Talks If Progress Stalls, Trump Warns

U.S. President Donald Trump has signaled that the United States could withdraw from ongoing peace negotiations between Ukraine and Russia if tangible progress isn’t made in the coming days.

His comments, delivered Thursday, mark a sharp shift in Washington’s diplomatic tone on the conflict.

The announcement follows earlier remarks by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who told reporters in Paris that the U.S. would “move on” if it appeared that peace was not “doable.”

Although Trump has pushed for a ceasefire between the warring nations, his efforts have yet to yield any major breakthroughs, despite initiating dialogue with Russian President Vladimir Putin and holding repeated talks with Moscow.

“Yeah very shortly,” Trump responded when asked by reporters in the Oval Office to confirm Rubio’s position on potentially walking away from the discussions.

“No specific number of days, but quickly. We want to get it done.”

While refusing to assign blame directly to either Putin, who initiated the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, or Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Trump emphasized that progress must be mutual.

“Now if for some reason one of the two parties makes it very difficult, we’re just going to say: ‘You’re foolish. You’re fools. You’re horrible people’ — and we’re going to just take a pass,” he stated. “But hopefully we won’t have to do that.”

Meanwhile, Russian strikes on Ukrainian territory persist, with officials in Kyiv reporting that attacks on Kharkiv and Sumy in the northeast have left at least two civilians dead and injured dozens more.

One of the few concessions secured by Trump — a temporary halt on attacks against Ukraine’s energy facilities — has now expired, according to Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, who responded to a question from AFP.

Following meetings with European leaders in Paris aimed at pushing a ceasefire, Rubio stated that time was running out to determine whether a short-term truce was possible.

“Because if it’s not, then I think we’re just going to move on,” he told journalists.

Despite the grim outlook, U.S. Vice President JD Vance expressed continued hope during a visit to Italy, insisting he remained “optimistic” about ending the war that has lasted over three years.

Trump, who once pledged to end the conflict within 24 hours of taking office, has struggled to make headway.

His attempts to thaw relations with the Kremlin have worried Ukrainian officials and driven a wedge between the United States and several of its European allies.

He and Vice President Vance were also reported to have had a heated exchange with Zelensky in the Oval Office back in February.

Trump has since accused the Ukrainian leader of contributing to the outbreak of war.

Nevertheless, Trump insists he’s not being manipulated by Moscow.

“My whole life has been one big negotiation and I know when people are playing us and I know when they’re not,” the former real estate mogul said.

Ukrainian President Zelensky condemned the most recent attacks, which coincided with the Christian observance of Good Friday.

Kyiv also reported the return of 909 soldiers’ bodies from Russia.

“This is how Russia started Good Friday — with ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, Shahed drones. A mockery of our people and cities,” Zelensky posted on Telegram.

The Russian military, for its part, claimed it had targeted key drone production facilities and Ukrainian airbases.

Putin recently dismissed a joint U.S.-Ukrainian ceasefire proposal, while also demanding that any truce in the Black Sea be conditioned on the lifting of Western sanctions.

Trump has made no secret of his growing dissatisfaction with Zelensky, further differentiating his stance from that of his predecessor, Joe Biden.

Meanwhile, Ukraine is expected to sign a strategic agreement next week in Washington granting the U.S. extensive access to its mineral reserves.

European leaders are also pushing for a greater role in the peace talks. On Thursday, France convened a meeting of U.S and European officials in Paris, which included President Emmanuel Macron, Secretary Rubio, and U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff.

However, Witkoff’s recent trip to Russia and his echoing of Kremlin narratives have raised concerns among allies over Washington’s diplomatic posture.

Staying Away From 2027 Contest Will Do You A Lot Of Good – Datti To Tinubu

Former Labour Party Vice Presidential candidate, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, has urged President Bola Tinubu to step away from the 2027 presidential race, saying doing so would be a politically wise decision.

Speaking during an appearance on Arise Television’s Prime Time on Friday, Baba-Ahmed argued that President Tinubu’s chances in the next election are slim, suggesting that the warning signs are already visible.

“I expect Tinubu to throw in the towel if he is that smart politician that he turns out to be,” he said.

Baba-Ahmed offered a critical view of Tinubu’s political journey, labeling him a “super smart politician” who has been involved in determining presidential candidates since 2007.

According to him, Tinubu’s influence has peaked with the 2023 election.

“He skipped 2007 and jokingly made Atiku (presidential) candidate, made Ribadu and somebody 2011, made Buhari in 2015, Buhari won, and then skipped 2019 and they stole 2023. If he is that smart, everything is there for him that he’s going to lose 2027,” Baba-Ahmed said.

He went further to predict that Tinubu would fail to deliver on his campaign promises, arguing that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has a track record of underperformance.

“Buhari did not develop Nigeria, Buhari did not provide security, Buhari did not fight corruption. Neither will Tinubu ever do this,” he added.

According to Baba-Ahmed, the APC is likely to lose power in the next general election, as Nigerians are gradually waking up to the need for true democratic participation.

“I see APC losing this election. I see Nigerians somehow uniting, listening to what someone like me is saying that if you cannot practice this, democracy is not for you, and then Nigerians will decide to come out and practice democracy for the first time, and then bad leadership will begin to have no hiding place in Nigeria,” he said.

He also hinted that there are already strong potential challengers who could unseat Tinubu in 2027, though he did not mention specific names.

Tinubu Not A Political Liability To The North, Says Defence Minister

The Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, has refuted claims that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is a political liability to the North, affirming that the president remains focused on addressing the region’s numerous challenges before the end of his first tenure in 2027.

In a statement released on Friday in Kaduna, the minister’s Senior Aide (Politics), Ibrahim Danmaliki Gidan Goga, emphasized that Nigeria’s democracy under Tinubu is more stable than ever.

He pointed out that those criticising the president through propaganda and falsehoods are merely seeking political relevance and sympathy.

Matawalle stated, “Our people in the North are wise enough not to be misled by individuals who have failed to secure their political future. These are people who once held power but failed to make meaningful impact, but now resort to mischief to stay relevant.”

He called for unity and support for the Tinubu administration, especially in its efforts to combat insecurity in the region.

He continued, “We must not allow ourselves to be manipulated into becoming part of the problem. Instead, we must rally behind the president to ensure lasting peace and development in the North.”

The minister reassured Nigerians, particularly those in the North, that President Tinubu is committed to securing peace, fostering development, and ensuring a stable future for all.
