2027: Southeast SDP Woos Atiku, Obi, Amaechi, Other Prominent Nigerians To Join Its Fold

The South-East chapter of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has extended an invitation to several prominent figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and former ministers Rauf Aregbesola and Rotimi Amaechi, urging them to join the party as it prepares for the 2027 general elections.

The appeal was made by Chief Sir Arinze Ekelem, the national vice chairman of the party for the South-East, in a statement released on Thursday in Awka, Anambra State.

Ekelem emphasized that the SDP offers a new political direction and is welcoming to leaders who are committed to the nation’s development.

“The SDP is a party that values inclusivity and provides a platform for Nigerians looking for a new political path to help rescue the country. We invite you to join this movement for a stronger and better Nigeria,” Ekelem stated.

He also reiterated the full support of the South-East zone for the party’s national chairman, Shehu Musa Gabam, and the National Working Committee (NWC), praising their efforts to reposition the party for future success.

Ekelem highlighted that the party’s growing appeal, reflected in the high-profile defections, indicates increasing confidence in its leadership and vision, particularly as the nation heads toward the 2027 elections.

Tinubu Govt Installs CCTV On Third Mainland Bridge To Monitor Suicide Attempts – Minister Umahi

The Bola Tinubu-led administration has revealed that it has installed closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos as part of a wider effort to enhance safety and security on the vital infrastructure.

Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, made this announcement during an interview on Channels TV on Friday.

He explained that the surveillance system was not only designed to monitor security issues but also aimed at preventing suicide attempts on the bridge.

“We have put CCTVs down under the deck so that anybody who is excavating sand within the 10-kilometre radius will be spotted. We have built, beside the bank of the sea on Third Mainland Bridge, an examination house where we have the police, navy, army, and local security,” Umahi stated.

“They will all be there watching the CCTV so that anybody who is trying to take his life on the Third Mainland Bridge, they will spot the person. With this CCTV, there will be no more excavation of sand under the deck around the piles,” he added.

The minister also discussed the recent temporary closure and subsequent reopening of the Independence Bridge in Lagos.

He explained that the closure was prompted by a structural issue involving the approach slab, which had failed due to a flawed design and erosion of the sand beneath it.

According to Umahi, the slab, originally constructed using a cantilever method, was structurally inadequate for the location, which led to its collapse.

In related news, Umahi provided updates on the ongoing Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project.

He expressed satisfaction with the progress of the work and revealed that a major section of the road would be ready for commissioning by President Bola Tinubu on May 25, 2025.

“The beginning of section one, as of today, about 15 kilometres by two carriageways on average has been achieved, and at the end of the project at Eleko where section one stopped, about 5 kilometres has been achieved,” he explained.

“So, the idea is by the 25th of May, 30 kilometres continuously will be made available for Mr President to commission from the beginning of section one down to kilometre 0 to 20,” Umahi concluded.

Uromi Killings: Families Of Lynched Hunters Threaten Reprisal Attack On Edo Community

The families and colleagues of the 16 hunters killed in Uromi, Edo State, have issued a serious warning, vowing to “take the law into their own hands” if the government fails to apprehend and prosecute those responsible for the brutal killings.

The hunters, who were en route from Port Harcourt, Rivers State, to Kano State for the Sallah celebrations, were ambushed and lynched by vigilantes at Goodwill Junction along the Old Ilushi Road, under the suspicion of being kidnappers.

This tragic event has sparked outrage and condemnation across the nation.

Most of the victims hailed from Toranke in Bunkure Local Government Area of Kano State, where mourning has turned into anger and a demand for justice.

In interviews with The PUNCH, community leaders, family members, and friends of the deceased called for immediate government action.

Alhaji Musa Dogo, a community leader and hunter, expressed his outrage, saying, “We cannot allow this to go unanswered. If the government does not arrest and publicly prosecute those responsible, we will take matters into our own hands. We know how to track down those who commit evil.”

Bala Danburan, another hunter, shared his resolve, declaring, “We know how to sneak into Uromi and take revenge ourselves if justice is not served. This is not a threat; it is a promise.”

The hunters also urged that the case be transferred to a Kano court to ensure both transparency and fairness. They pointed to a previous instance where the Kano State Government had transferred a suspect to Bayelsa State for trial.

Alhaji Usman Bako, a resident of Bunkure, expressed his frustration with the government’s neglect of local security outfits like hunters, who play a crucial role in combating insecurity in rural areas.

“If this continues, we may be forced to withdraw from joint operations,” he warned.

Malam Sani Umar, who lost his younger brother Yahaya in the attack, spoke about the grief that has consumed his family.

“Yahaya left behind four children and a wife. He believed in justice, but now he’s been killed unjustly.”

In a tearful interview, Hafsat Ibrahim, mother of another victim, Nasiru, demanded justice and compensation, saying, “he was the backbone of our family… The killers must be punished according to Islamic rites, and the government should compensate us.”

While the governors of Kano and Edo states recently visited the grieving families, they remain dissatisfied, insisting that words are not enough.

“We need real action. We need arrests. We need to see prosecution,” Sani Umar emphasized.

DAILY GAZETTE earlier reported that the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) in Abuja issued a stern warning against any group contemplating reprisals over the killings in Uromi, Edo State, stating that security agencies would take action against those stoking tensions.

Major General Markus Kangye, Director of Defence Media Operations, addressed the issue in Abuja on Thursday, claiming that political leaders from both Edo and Kano states had already “resolved” the crisis.

He mentioned that the Edo State government had made efforts to reach out to the affected families in Kano to ease tensions.

“At the political level, everything has been settled. Anybody or group trying to cause panic or issue threats will be investigated and dealt with accordingly,” Kangye stated.

The military general also rejected concerns regarding a supposed relaxation of security forces’ efforts against violent herders, terrorists, and bandits across the country.

“The military is still very much in the fight. We have neutralised many of them and will continue our onslaught against them and their leaders,” Kangye affirmed.

Despite the assurances, fears of reprisal attacks are escalating, with tensions remaining high, even after political leaders’ attempts to resolve the matter.

It was reported that operatives from the Department of State Security (DSS) arrested two principal suspects involved in the killing of the 16 individuals from northern Nigeria last week.

According to a statement by Fred Itua, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Monday Okpebholo, the arrests were made following credible intelligence in Uromi.

“Operatives of the DSS have apprehended two principal suspects involved in the killing of 16 Nigerians in Uromi. The arrest was made following credible intelligence, and security forces are intensifying efforts to track down other individuals connected to the crime,” Itua said.

The arrested suspects have since been transferred to Abuja for further interrogation and prosecution by the relevant authorities.

Regarding compensation for the victims’ families, Itua clarified that discussions between the Edo and Kano State governments are ongoing to determine the appropriate form of compensation.

Anambra Gov’ship: APGA, APC, PDP Set For Primaries Today

The political scene in Anambra State is highly charged as three major political parties are set to hold their governorship primary elections today.

The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has demonstrated its commitment to democratic values by conducting a smooth screening process for Governor Chukwuma Soludo, paving the way for his candidacy in today’s primary election.

Both APGA and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have only one aspirant each, while the All Progressives Congress (APC) has multiple strong grassroots politicians vying for the ticket.

APGA has just one aspirant—Governor Chukwuma Soludo—while the PDP has Hon. Jude Nwafor as its sole aspirant.

Both APGA and PDP are expected to affirm their respective candidates and return them unopposed.

However, it was reported that due to the Supreme Court ruling regarding the position of its National Chairman, the Labour Party’s primary has been postponed.

The Labour Party was initially set to feature two aspirants: Mr. John Nwosu and Dr. George Moghalu.

In APGA, National Publicity Secretary Mr. Ejimofor Opara stated, “The APGA primary election promises to be a historic event, with over 3,260 delegates set to choose their preferred candidate.”

He went on to praise the party leadership for its commitment to peaceful and stable politics, noting that the screening process was free from controversy.

“As the party prepares for the primary election, APGA members and supporters are optimistic about the future of the party and the state. With its emphasis on progressive leadership and solutions-driven governance, APGA is poised to continue making a positive impact in Anambra State.”

Opara further noted that Governor Soludo, who has garnered endorsements from various groups and individuals for a second term, quietly picked up his expression of interest and nomination forms at the APGA National Secretariat in Abuja.

The party’s National Working Committee, led by Ezeokenwa Sly Jr., has certified Soludo as fit for the primary election scheduled for today, April 5, 2025.

“This development marks a significant milestone in the history of Anambra State elections, as Governor Soludo becomes the first aspirant to seek re-election based on his proven track record of performance,” Opara added.

In the APC, a number of aspirants have emerged, including Paul Chukwuma, Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, Hon. Chukwuma Umeoji, Engr. Johnbosco Onunkwo, Hon. Edozie Madu, Mr. Valentine Ozigbo, and Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu.

However, on Friday, Umeoji, a leading governorship aspirant in the APC, resigned from the party.

Chukwuma, who addressed his supporters in his hometown of Umueri, Anambra East Local Government Area, explained that he left because he could not collaborate with certain individuals in the state leadership of the party.

He said: “We formed APC and have been doing all to take care of it. Ward chairmen are the owners of the party, I have handed my official resignation to the chairman of the party in my ward. My support and loyalty are 100 percent for the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu. Our agenda is to connect Anambra to the center.”

“We want to have some time to prepare and ensure that we raise the five percent we always give the president. The problem has always been with the leaders in Anambra, the president is interested in fixing Nigeria and we will support him but we will not work with some unprogressive elements in Anambra,” he added.

Earlier, there was unrest within the APC following protests over the delegate list for the election.

Some state functionaries even threatened to resign.

Mr. Iyke Orji reported that the APC state Publicity Secretary, Val Oliobi, was among those considering resignation because he was excluded from the delegate list.

“He wants to resign because he was not included in the delegate list for tomorrow’s election. Even ward chairmen, youth leaders, and zonal leaders didn’t make the list. The Anambra State APC Legal Adviser didn’t make the list, same as the state Youth Leader. In short, every single person supporting Paul Chukwuma didn’t make the list.”

Orji also claimed, “We have been informed that Nicholas Ukachukwu connived with the state chairman to produce a list where he inserted the name of all his boys.”

Natasha’s Assassination Allegation False, Malicious – Akpabio Fires Back

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has condemned the assassination claim made against him by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan as “false and malicious.”

The statement was issued in Abuja by Akpabio’s aide, Eseme Eyiboh, following Akpoti-Uduaghan’s comments while addressing her supporters in Kogi State on Wednesday.

Akpoti-Uduaghan had alleged that Akpabio sought the assistance of Governor Yahaya Bello to have her assassinated in Kogi, rather than in Abuja, a claim that has since been dismissed by the Kogi State government.

In response, Akpabio described the allegation as a lie aimed at tarnishing his reputation.

He said, “This outrageous accusation is not only false but a complete fabrication and deeply irresponsible and dangerous attempt to provoke public unrest, attract media attention, and discredit the person and office of the President of the Senate for ulterior motives.”

He went on to remind the public of a previous unsubstantiated claim made by Akpoti-Uduaghan regarding sexual harassment, which she later seemed to abandon without further explanation.

“Having failed to gain traction with that narrative, she has now escalated her campaign of misinformation to a defamatory dimension,” Akpabio added.

The Senate President also pointed out that Akpoti-Uduaghan had made similar assassination allegations in the past, specifically against Governor Bello in 2019 and 2023, as well as multiple unfounded claims of sexual harassment against other public figures.

“Her recurring persecution narrative and evident lying complex should not be weaponized to malign individuals or destroy hard-earned reputations,” Akpabio concluded.

Court Bars Senator Natasha, Others From Granting Interviews On Sexual Harassment Case

The Federal High Court in Abuja has issued an order prohibiting all parties involved in the lawsuit filed by suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan against Senate President Godswill Akpabio and three others from granting press interviews or making public statements about the case.

The ruling came on Friday after a complaint was raised by Akpabio’s lawyer, Kehinde Ogunwumiju (SAN), who accused Akpoti-Uduaghan of conducting a media campaign by giving interviews to various television stations about the ongoing legal proceedings.

The case is still pending in court.

Justice Binta Nyako, ruling on the matter, ordered that no party or their legal representatives should comment on the case publicly, particularly through press interviews or media platforms.

“There shall be no press interviews by all parties and their lawyers as regards the subject matter of this case,” she stated, warning that any breach of the order would be considered contempt of court.

Akpoti-Uduaghan had filed the lawsuit to prevent the Senate Committee on Ethics and Public Petitions from proceeding with disciplinary action against her.

On March 4, Justice Nyako had issued an order restraining the Senate from initiating any disciplinary measures against Akpoti-Uduaghan, following an ex parte application filed by her lawyers.

The judge had directed the defendants to appear within 72 hours of being served the order and explain why an interlocutory injunction should not be issued against them.

Two days after the judgment, however, the Senate suspended Akpoti-Uduaghan for six months over allegations of gross misconduct, a decision that followed the adoption of the report from the Senate’s Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions.

On March 19, Judge Obiora Egwuatu vacated his earlier order from March 4, lifting the restriction on the Senate’s suspension of the Kogi senator.

Later, on March 25, Egwuatu announced his decision to recuse himself from the case after Akpabio raised an allegation of bias against him.

The case was then transferred to the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, John Tsoho, for reassignment.

It was subsequently reassigned to Justice Nyako.

The court adjourned the case till May 12.

BREAKING: Labour Party Suspends Anambra Governorship Primary Indefinitely

The Labour Party has indefinitely suspended its Anambra 2025 governorship primary election, which was originally scheduled for tomorrow, Saturday, April 5, 2025.

DAILY GAZETTE report that the suspension follows Friday’s Supreme Court ruling that removed Julius Abure as the national chairman of the Labour Party.

The court ordered Abure and his executive team to vacate the party’s national secretariat and all other party offices nationwide.

Comrade Peter Okoye, the acting chairman of the Labour Party in Anambra State, confirmed the development to DAILY GAZETTE in Awka on Friday.

He explained that the governorship primary, which had been set for April 5, 2025, would no longer take place.

“By virtue of the Supreme Court’s verdict this afternoon, any primary election conducted by any executive outside Senator Nenadi Usman will not stand,” Okoye stated.

He added, “The new helmsman and her team would take over the National Secretariat and other structures nationwide immediately.”

Okoye revealed that a meeting of the acting Anambra State executive has been scheduled for Saturday to discuss the next steps and communicate with the national secretariat.

He urged “all our teeming members and supporters to remain steadfast and unshaken in their support.”

He further described the Labour Party as the fastest-growing party in Nigeria, particularly in Anambra State, and reassured that the situation would be resolved.

Okoye encouraged all members and stakeholders to stay vigilant and await further instructions from the party.

Labour Party Hails Supreme Court Judgment Affirming Abure As National Chairman, Says Only Parties Can Decide Their Leadership

The Labour Party has expressed its satisfaction with the Friday’s Supreme Court ruling that upheld Barrister Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the party.

The ruling reinforced the party’s stance that leadership decisions should be made internally by the party itself and not by the courts.

A statement issued by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, clarified that the Supreme Court’s judgment affirmed that the matter was purely an internal issue for the party.

The court, in its ruling, emphasized that the lower courts should have refrained from intervening in matters related to the leadership of political parties.

As a result, the Supreme Court struck out the appeal by Senator Nenadi Usman, which had been heard at the Appeal Court, and also dismissed the Labour Party suit at the trial court.

The judgment did not remove Barrister Julius Abure from his position as National Chairman of the Labour Party.

Instead, it upheld the previous decisions of the high courts and the Appeal Court, which had recognized the Labour Party’s right to determine its leadership structure.

The Supreme Court also did not annul the Appeal Court judgment in Labour Party vs. Ebiseni and 2 others (CA/ABJ/CV/1172/2024), delivered on November 13, 2024, which had confirmed Abure’s position as the National Chairman.

The statement reaffirmed that this judgment remains valid and has not been appealed.

“The implications of the judgment are very clear. Barrister Julius Abure remains the National Chairman of the Labour Party,” the statement said.

It further clarified that the Labour Party’s constitution clearly defines the party’s leadership.

According to the constitution, the leadership is vested in the National Working Committee, headed by Barrister Abure.

It was also noted that the party’s constitution grants the National Secretary the authority to issue notices for meetings of the National Convention, the National Executive Council, and the National Working Committee, but only after consultation with and approval from the National Chairman.

The Labour Party also addressed the March 27, 2024, National Convention, which was called by the party’s leadership.

The results of this convention, which led to the election of the party’s leadership, have been submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and are officially recognized by INEC.

In response to claims from certain individuals gathered in Umuahia, who celebrated what they called Abure’s removal, the Labour Party clarified that such gatherings were not in line with the party’s constitution.

The party stressed that these actions were misguided and misleading, as the Supreme Court ruling did not indicate any change in leadership.

“The leadership of the party is fully satisfied with the Supreme Court’s judgment, which reaffirms Barrister Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the Labour Party.”

“The current National Working Committee is validly elected, having been duly nominated, endorsed, and ratified through the party’s internal processes, in line with the Labour Party’s constitution,” the statement added.

The party called on all members to respect the decision of the Supreme Court and resolve party issues through internal mechanisms rather than rushing to the courts.

“It is only the political parties that have the power to choose their leaders, not the courts. Everyone must respect the decisions of the party and its constitution,” the statement concluded.

The Labour Party emphasized that the structures of the party are well-equipped to handle any internal matters, and as it stands, Barrister Julius Abure remains the legitimate National Chairman of the Labour Party.

Senate To Review Tax Reform Bills After Holidays, Bamidele Assures

The Senate will consider the Tax Reform Bills 2024 after the upcoming Eid-el-Fitr and Easter holidays, according to Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele (Ekiti Central).

He confirmed that the red chamber is thoroughly reviewing all public concerns related to the bills.

Bamidele also responded to new allegations against the Senate President by former lawmaker, Senator Elisha Abbo, dismissing them as baseless and malicious.

During an empowerment event in Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State, Bamidele stated that the ongoing review of the Constitution would lead to more efficient governance.

He emphasized that the process is progressing and will contribute to a more responsive system when completed.

The event, which benefitted over 5,000 constituents across five local councils in Ekiti Central, saw Bamidele reflecting on the key legislative actions taken by the 10th Senate since its inauguration on June 13, 2023.

These initiatives, he noted, are aimed at stabilizing the country’s democracy, strengthening the economy, and addressing critical issues such as inflation and security.

Bamidele pointed out the importance of the Tax Reform Bills 2024, among other key legislative actions, in creating a functional governance structure to support the nation’s economic stability.

He also highlighted his role in shaping and prioritizing significant legislative frameworks.

The empowerment program included a variety of support for constituents, such as one Caterpillar tractor, 10 diesel engine tractors, 536 sewing machines, and 303 chest freezers.

Additionally, 1,900 individuals received grants of N100,000 each to boost their businesses, while others were given motorcycles, tricycles, and mini buses to improve local transportation.

Governor Biodun Oyebanji acknowledged Ekiti’s benefit from President Bola Tinubu’s request for Bamidele to serve at the federal level.

Meanwhile, Senator Elisha Abbo, who was removed from the Senate by judicial ruling, accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio of being behind his removal.

Abbo also accused Akpabio of putting suspended Kogi Central Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan in danger by withdrawing her security details.

Abbo, in an appearance on Arise News PrimeTime show, claimed, “He sat like an emperor and ordered her suspension, stopped her salary, barred her from the National Assembly, and even instructed the Inspector-General of Police not to provide her with security. In another way, he exposed her to be killed.”

Abbo also questioned why Natasha was treated so severely, while Akpabio had clashed with former Senate President Bukola Saraki in the 8th Assembly without facing suspension.

However, Akpabio’s media aide, Eseme Eyiboh, swiftly refuted Abbo’s claims, stating that the Senate President had no involvement in the legal process leading to Abbo’s ouster.

Eyiboh also noted, “It is sad and regrettable that despite publicly retracting a similar allegation in 2023, Abbo has returned to the same baseless claims he previously renounced.”

Over 200,000 Nigerians Use Online Dating Sites Despite Safety Concerns, Fraud

More than 200,000 Nigerians are turning to online dating platforms to find life partners, despite the risks of identity fraud, catfishing, and scams, according to reports.

Elijah Bassey-Kokoette, co-founder of Tramatch International Limited, shared this insight during a webinar titled Love, Relationship, Technology.

He noted that online dating was becoming increasingly popular both globally and in Nigeria, with more people seeking relationship partners based on specific criteria.

Bassey-Kokoette highlighted the role of technology in addressing the dangers of online dating, including identity theft, impersonation, and fraud.

He stated, “In Nigeria, over 60,000 active users engage with online dating platforms monthly. Tramatch itself has a growing registration of about 200,000 users seeking connections.”

He also provided figures showing the impressive growth of the global dating market, which is expected to rise from $11.32 billion in 2025 to $21.71 billion by 2034, representing a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.50%.

The online dating market in Nigeria, Bassey-Kokoette revealed, is valued at approximately $1.3 million.

Tramatch, which is a faith-based matchmaking platform focused on long-term relationships, is addressing the growing concern over dating scams by introducing enhanced safety measures.

These include advanced Know Your Customer (KYC) verification and AI-powered fraud detection tools to protect users from scams, identity theft, and impersonation.

“Dating scams have marred the online dating experience for many users,” Bassey-Kokoette remarked.

“We are working on strategies to counter the rise in scams by requiring users to upload a profile picture and undergo a test to verify their identity, among other security measures.”

He added, “We stand out by ensuring that uploaded images match the real identity of the user. Tramatch is dedicated to detecting and blocking scammers who use fake foreign identities, men impersonating women, and individuals using stolen images or false details.”

Tramatch also revealed that it was developing a new feature that could predict the likelihood of divorce between partners, further enhancing its service for users seeking serious, long-term relationships.
