Rivers: Ehie Denies Role In Assembly Fire, Threatens Legal Action Against Nwaeke

George Nwaeke,

Edison Ehie, Chief of Staff to suspended Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, has dismissed allegations linking him to the burning of the state House of Assembly Complex on October 29, 2023.

Former Rivers State Head of Service, George Nwaeke, had accused both Fubara and Ehie of orchestrating the fire, a claim Ehie firmly rejected during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics program.

“It is very important to clarify that I was not, I had no hand and was not part of the burning down of the Rivers State House of Assembly,” he stated.

“Like everyone else, I woke up in the early hours of 30th of October 2023 to hear of the burning down of the Rivers State House of Assembly.”

Ehie further revealed that he has directed his legal team to initiate a criminal libel case against Nwaeke for making false accusations.

“I will not join issues completely with Mr. George Nwaeke because I have already instructed my lawyers to file an issue of criminal libel against George Nwaeke, and I hope he is very prepared to substantiate his claims and his allegations,” he said.

He suggested that Martins Amaewhule, Speaker of the Assembly, should be investigated regarding the incident, alleging that the fire broke out shortly after security officials granted access to the speaker’s convoy.

Ehie accused Nwaeke of aligning with political adversaries for financial gain, stating that the former head of service had succumbed to the lure of “emergency riches.”

He also referenced recent concerns raised by Nwaeke’s wife over his sudden disappearance, suggesting that the episode reflected a man who had “betrayed his conscience” and his family “to own the world.”

Displaying WhatsApp messages from Nwaeke requesting financial aid following his resignation, Ehie remarked, “George is not a contented man,” implying that Nwaeke’s recent statements were not made with a clear mind.

He further argued that Nwaeke held no significant influence in the governance of Rivers State, downplaying his relevance in political affairs.

Why I Removed FCT From Treasury Single Account – Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu has clarified his administration’s decision to exempt the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) from the Treasury Single Account (TSA), stating that the move was aimed at accelerating development and improving residents’ engagement in governance.

Speaking at the Presidential Villa in Abuja during a Sallah homage led by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, Tinubu praised the minister for his dedication and expressed hope that his efforts would contribute to the All Progressives Congress (APC) securing victory in 2027.

The President also addressed his remarks about potentially dismissing Wike over Abuja’s development projects and their political implications.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Tinubu noted that bureaucratic challenges tied to the TSA had hindered infrastructure development in the capital city, necessitating a review for efficiency.

He emphasized that lifting the TSA restrictions on the FCT had led to significant progress in infrastructure, healthcare, and security.

“I remember the day the FCT Minister came to meet me, and he said, ‘Please take us out of the problem of the TSA, so that I can do more work and achieve more.’ I said, ‘Show me what you are about to do,’ and he presented his thinking and belief.

“Everything started changing rapidly. I started seeing the opening up of the rural areas, the resuscitation of abandoned projects and the completion of the Vice President’s official residence that had been abandoned for years. The FCT rehabilitated health care centres, upgraded facilities for schoolchildren, and provided furniture,” Tinubu explained.

He lauded Wike for demonstrating that cutting through bureaucratic hurdles was necessary and for restructuring the FCT public service to enable civil servants to aspire to leadership positions.

“We wouldn’t have been able to open our mouths to celebrate if not because of the progressive ideas you brought to FCT. We can now celebrate the innovative ideas brought to the FCT,” Tinubu stated.

Wike, in response, described the visit as historic, remarking, “It is the first time the FCT residents can extend our greetings and best wishes to you in person during this blessed period. We are genuinely delighted to be here.”

He pledged his continued loyalty to the President and commitment to advancing the capital city’s development, assuring that numerous projects would be completed under his tenure.

Tinubu referred to Wike as “Mr. Infrastructure” and highlighted key projects completed under his leadership, emphasizing their impact on the lives of Abuja residents.

Recognizing the diverse personalities in the delegation, the President remarked: “I could see the diversity of men and women here. I must thank the Minister of FCT. It’s worth it. It is nothing other than a privilege to be the landlord of every one of us in Abuja.”

Recalling his discussion with Wike on the TSA, Tinubu humorously noted that it could have cost the minister his job.

“The day Wike came to me and said, ‘Please, take us out of this problem of TSA so that I can do more work and achieve more.’ Then I said, ‘Okay, tell me what you’re about to do.’ And he presented it. I threw in my political guide.

“‘Would that give me any opportunity for my party to win the election in FCT?’ I said, ‘I know where you are coming from: your party or my party. If this thing goes too much in your favour, you will lose your job.’ Then he said, ‘Okay, we settle that, oga,’” Tinubu recounted.

The Administrator of Rivers State, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (rtd), has described the Trans-Kalabari Road Project as a crucial initiative aimed at addressing the socioeconomic challenges faced by residents of riverine communities.

Ibas made this remark on Monday during an inspection visit to the ongoing Trans-Kalabari Road Project in Rumuolumeni Community, as well as the Permanent Secretaries’ Quarters in Rumuokwurushi Community, both located in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area.

The administrator emphasized the necessity of completing these projects, highlighting their potential to significantly enhance the economic standing of Rivers State and Nigeria at large.

He further urged the contractors to adhere strictly to the project timelines, assuring them that the state government had fulfilled its financial commitments.

Democrats Sue Trump Over Election Overhaul Order

The Democratic Party has filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration, challenging an executive order that seeks to introduce sweeping changes to the U.S. election system, including requiring proof of citizenship for voter registration and restricting the counting of mail-in ballots.

In the suit filed on Monday, Democrats urged a federal court to block the order, arguing that it unlawfully prevents states from counting mail-in ballots received after election day.

The executive directive also mandates that individuals provide proof of citizenship—such as a passport—when registering to vote.

“The President does not get to dictate the rules of our elections,” stated the lawsuit, which was filed in Washington by the Democratic National Committee, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, and others.

“The Executive Order seeks to impose radical changes on how Americans register to vote, cast a ballot, and participate in our democracy—all of which threaten to disenfranchise lawful voters and none of which is legal,” the suit added.

After signing the March 25 order, titled Preserving and Protecting the Integrity of American Elections, President Donald Trump called it “the farthest-reaching executive action taken” to ensure secure elections in the U.S.

Trump, who has refused to acknowledge his 2020 election loss, has consistently questioned the credibility of the U.S. electoral system.

He has frequently promoted unfounded claims of widespread voter fraud, particularly regarding absentee ballots.

Legal experts quickly condemned Trump’s executive order, calling it an overreach of presidential authority that could potentially disenfranchise millions of eligible voters.

In a separate lawsuit filed Monday, advocacy groups led by the Campaign Legal Center and the State Democracy Defenders Fund also challenged the executive order.

“The president’s executive order is an unlawful action that threatens to uproot our tried-and-tested election systems and silence potentially millions of Americans,” said Danielle Lang of the Campaign Legal Center.

“It is simply not within the president’s authority to set election rules by executive decree, especially when they would restrict access to voting in this way.”

Kogi Govt Petitions Security Agencies Over Senator Natasha’s Rally

The Kogi State Government has called on security agencies to hold Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan accountable if any violence erupts in the state following her recent homecoming rally.

In a statement on Tuesday, the Commissioner for Information, Kingsley Fanwo, criticized the senator for proceeding with the event despite the government’s ban on public gatherings, imposed by Governor Usman Ododo’s administration.

“She should be held accountable for her blatant attempts to incite violence and cause unnecessary tension,” Fanwo stated.

The commissioner also alleged that the lawmaker’s visit was a deliberate attempt to disrupt peace in the state.

“She deliberately violated the State Government’s ban on political gatherings, which was put in place to prevent security breaches and maintain peace.

“Instead of respecting the law, she chose to incite chaos, disregarding the safety and stability of the state.”

Despite the government’s restrictions, Akpoti-Uduaghan received an enthusiastic welcome from her supporters and residents of Ihima, Okehi Local Government Area.

As early as 8 am, supporters from across the five local government areas of Kogi Central trooped into Ihima to celebrate the senator’s return.

Local musicians entertained the crowd as they awaited her arrival.

Shortly after, Akpoti-Uduaghan made a grand entrance in a white helicopter, drawing cheers from the jubilant crowd.

Senator Natasha Defies Ban, Holds Homecoming Rally In Kogi

Despite a ban on rallies and public gatherings by the Kogi State Government, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan on Tuesday received a warm reception from her supporters and residents of Ihima in Okehi Local Government Area.

As early as 8 am, crowds from the five local government areas of Kogi Central Senatorial District, which Akpoti-Uduaghan represents, gathered in Ihima to welcome the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) senator.

Local musicians entertained the enthusiastic supporters as they awaited her arrival.

Shortly after, the senator made a dramatic entrance in a white helicopter, drawing loud cheers from the crowd.

Addressing her supporters, she dismissed the ban on gatherings, saying she had done nothing wrong.

“Yesterday, we heard on the news that rallies and gatherings will not be allowed, that roads will be blocked, and convoys leading into the state will not be allowed. I knew that we were the targets. But then I said, this is not political season, this is not campaign time,” she stated.

“We are not having a rally. This is just me, the Senator representing Kogi Central, coming down to her people to celebrate this festive time – the Sallah with you, and there is nothing wrong with that. I am breaking no law. This is Nigeria. We have the right to be free, to express our choice in gatherings and celebrations.”

The senator’s visit came just hours after the Kogi State Government imposed a curfew in Okehi LGA, citing security concerns.

The chairman of the local government, Amoka Monday, reinforced the ban, while the police also advised her to cancel the event.

Despite these restrictions, Akpoti-Uduaghan remained defiant, assuring her supporters that she had every right to visit her hometown.

“Nobody and nothing can stop me from coming home. I’m an Ebira woman; this is my land. I’m the daughter of the late Jimoh Abdul Akpoti. I know my roots; I’m not a bastard, and I’m not afraid of anybody,” she declared.

Ahead of her return, the senator had alleged that any security breach during the homecoming should be blamed on Kogi State Governor Usman Ododo, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and former Governor Yahaya Bello.

Edo: Ohanaeze Condemns Baseless Accusations Against Ndigbo Over Uromi Killings

Apex Igbo socio-cultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has expressed deep sorrow over the brutal killing of some Northerners in Uromi, Edo State, last week.

In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Dr. Ezechi Chukwu, Ohanaeze Ndigbo strongly condemned the attack in all its forms and called on law enforcement agencies to conduct a thorough investigation to track down the perpetrators.

The organization, however, criticized the widespread social media narratives blaming Igbos in Edo State for the incident, describing such claims as baseless and unfair.

“It is regrettable that often, some wilfully disposed self-inflicted mischievous fellows would always prefer to lay accusing fingers on Ndigbo at the slightest provocation, even when all indices to the same point to the contrary,” Ohanaeze stated.

The group questioned how Igbos could have orchestrated such an organized crime in Edo State, far from their homeland.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo, therefore, urged “those treacherous fellows who are baselessly accusing Ndigbo in Edo of the killings” to desist from making inflammatory statements, warning that such accusations threaten national unity and peaceful coexistence.

The organization also encouraged Igbo people across Nigeria to remain peaceful, law-abiding, and continue their daily activities without fear.

It extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and prayed for the repose of their souls.

Meanwhile, Ohanaeze Ndigbo has also expressed disappointment over the Senate’s failure to pass a motion to name the Abuja headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) after the late Professor Humphrey Nwosu.

It noted that as Chairman of the National Electoral Commission (NEC), Prof. Nwosu conducted Nigeria’s most acclaimed presidential election in 1993, which, based on available records, was won by Chief MKO Abiola.

The group recalled that since Prof. Nwosu’s death on October 20, 2024, in Virginia, USA, there have been growing calls from Nigerians worldwide for him to be posthumously honored.

“The height of this patriotic call was the motion moved by Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe on Wednesday, 25th March 2025, and supported by the South East Senators and other good-willed Senators in the Red Chambers, to name the INEC headquarters after the late academic luminary, but regrettably was not passed by the August body,” the statement read.
