FG Settles Retired Military Officers’ Allowances After Protest

The federal government has begun paying the long-overdue allowances of retired military personnel following a protest at the entrance of the Ministry of Finance in Abuja.

The demonstration, which lasted several hours, saw the retirees barricading the entrance with canopies and chairs from as early as 7am, preventing ministry staff from entering the premises.

This protest comes after a similar one in December 2024, when retirees shut down the ministry over the government’s failure to settle their claims.

For months, the retirees were told that there were no funds available to clear their entitlements, despite official approvals for the payments.

The retirees were owed salary increments ranging from 20% to 28% for the period between January and November 2024, along with other benefits, including palliatives from October 2023 to November 2024.

They also demanded an additional N32,000 to be added to their pensions, a bulk payment of the Security Debarment Allowance, and a refund of pension deductions for soldiers who were medically boarded.

Despite the government paying 50% of the owed entitlements after the December protest and promising to settle the remaining balance, the retirees claimed that the promise was not fulfilled, prompting their return to the streets on Tuesday.

A team of security officers, along with senior ministry staff, attempted to persuade the retirees to end the protest, but they remained firm in their demand for credit alerts before leaving.

Their stance changed only when the Chairman of the Military Pension Board, Air Vice Marshal Paul Irumheson, addressed the protesters and confirmed that the funds for their payments had been transferred to the board.

“We have received the funds for your entitlements, and you will begin to see your alerts shortly. Please leave now as we are working to ensure everyone is paid,” Irumheson said.

Following this announcement, the retirees began receiving their payment alerts, prompting them to dismantle the protest setup and return to their homes.

Abiodun Durowaiye-Herberts, spokesperson for the Coalition for Concerned Veterans, confirmed that retirees were receiving their payments, while Aliyu Umar, another community leader, expressed frustration over the government’s earlier claims that there were no funds.

“Now that the money is here, we ask, why did we have to protest to receive our entitlements?” Umar said.

El-Rufai’s Chief Of Staff Arraigned For Money Laundering

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has charged Muhammad Bashir Saidu, former Chief of Staff to ex-Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State, with money laundering before the Federal High Court in Kaduna.

Saidu, who also served as the Commissioner of Finance during El-Rufai’s tenure, was charged alongside Ibrahim Muktar, a public official in the Ministry of Finance.

Saidu and Muktar face two counts of money laundering, which contradict earlier reports suggesting that Saidu had been cleared of all charges after a lengthy 10-month investigation.

The charges were signed by Dr. Osuobeni Ekoi Akponimisingha, the Assistant Chief Legal Officer of ICPC.

According to the charge document, dated FHC/KD/IC/2025, in March 2022, while Saidu was still the Commissioner of Finance, he allegedly accepted N155,000,000 in cash from Ibrahim Muktar, an amount exceeding the limit legally authorized.

Saidu reportedly received the money through a proxy, Muazu Abdu, his Special Assistant, committing an offense under Section 2(a) and punishable under Section 19(d) of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.

The ICPC also accused Saidu of indirectly taking control of the same N155,000,000 through Muazu Abdu, which was believed to be the proceeds of unlawful activity, such as corruption.

This act allegedly violated Section 18(2)(d) of the Money Laundering Act and is punishable under Section 18(3).

This development comes shortly after reports of a visit by El-Rufai to Saidu in prison last week.

I Have Received Over 200 Death Threats Following Comments On Peter Obi, Says APC Publicity Secretary, Morka

Felix Morka, the National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has revealed that both he and his family members have been targets of numerous death threats after his remarks about Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi.

Morka reported receiving over 400 threats, including more than 200 explicit death threats, following a statement where Obi accused him of making life-threatening comments.

“I have documented over 400 threats, including more than 200 death threats,” Morka explained.

“These are not just vague threats, but explicit messages with details about how I will be harmed shooting, beheading, and other graphic descriptions. Some threats have even extended to my family.”

The controversy began after Morka criticized Obi for his comments about President Bola Tinubu, suggesting that Obi had crossed several lines in his criticisms.

Obi responded by accusing Morka’s statements as threats to his life, which led the Labour Party to issue a seven-day ultimatum for President Tinubu to address Morka’s comments.

Morka, however, denied any intention to threaten Obi and rejected the allegations.

“This entire situation is unfounded. I did not threaten Peter Obi. Those making these threats are acting independently, and I trust law enforcement will hold them accountable.”

Morka also challenged Obi to provide evidence of the threats he claims to have received, saying, “If Obi has been threatened, he should present proof. A person of his stature should be able to show evidence of such threats. If there were real threats against him, law enforcement should be involved, not a media conversation.”

Community Guard Operative Accidentally Kills Self After Rescuing Kidnap Victim

An operative of the Sokoto State Community Guard Corps, whose name has not been disclosed, tragically shot and killed himself in an accidental discharge after participating in a joint operation that rescued 66 kidnap victims.

The operation, led by the Nigerian Army, took place on Monday at Tidibali Forest in the eastern part of Sokoto State.

Colonel Ahmed Usman (rtd), the Special Adviser to Governor Ahmed Aliyu on Security, confirmed the incident on Wednesday. He stated that the operative died from an accidental discharge shortly after returning to their base from the operation.

“The incident occurred shortly after the team returned to their base. He was handling his weapon when it accidentally fired, fatally wounding him. He died soon after,” Usman explained.

Usman highlighted the successes of the ongoing operation, which has been instrumental in the state’s efforts to combat banditry.

In addition to rescuing 66 kidnap victims, the operation has also resulted in the deaths of several bandits.

“The operation is ongoing as we are committed to eliminating criminal elements, especially bandits, from the state,” he added.

Earlier reports indicated that the rescued victims were taken to Isa town in the Isa Local Government area for further care.

573,519 Apply For 3,927 Vacant Positions In Nigeria Customs Service

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has revealed that it received a staggering 573,519 applications for the 3,927 vacancies announced in the 2024/2025 recruitment exercise.

This announcement came shortly after the closure of the application portal.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Abdullahi Maiwada, the National Public Relations Officer of the NCS, provided details on the breakdown of the applications.

He explained that the recruitment was for various positions, including both support and general duty staff, and that the process had been smooth and thorough.

Maiwada further detailed the categories of applicants: “For the general duty positions, under the superintendent cadre, we received 249,218 applications,” he said.

For the superintendent cadre in the support staff category, 27,722 candidates with HNDs or university degrees applied.

He also highlighted the applications for the inspector cadre positions, requiring National Certificate in Education or National Diploma, which attracted 115,634 applicants for general duty and 12,952 for support staff.

For customs assistants, those applying with secondary school certificates were divided into two groups: one with at least five credits including Maths and English (153,593 applications) and another without those two subjects (14,400 applications).

The total number of applications amounted to 573,000, a reflection of the high demand for the 3,927 positions.

Last week, Wale Edun, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, had announced that the federal government had approved the recruitment of the 3,927 officers to fill gaps and improve the efficiency of the NCS in trade facilitation.

Tinubu’s Controversial Tax Reform Bills Dead On Arrival – Northern Groups Back Kaduna Governor

Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State has announced that the Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has expressed support for his recent criticisms of the Federal Government’s controversial tax reforms.

Mohammed made the statement following a condolence visit by the coalition after the passing of his stepmother, Hajiya Hauwa Duguri.

The governor had earlier raised concerns over the tax reform bills presented to the Senate by President Bola Tinubu, arguing that they disproportionately favor certain regions of Nigeria at the expense of the northern part of the country.

In a post shared on X, Governor Mohammed confirmed that the CNG endorsed his position, highlighting that the tax policies negatively impact northern Nigerians.

The coalition also condemned the presidential threats directed at Mohammed, calling them unjustified and dismissive of legitimate democratic debate.

The governor expressed his gratitude for the coalition’s support and reaffirmed his commitment to advocating for the welfare of the northern region.

He also emphasized that his administration in Bauchi State would persist in addressing the region’s economic and security challenges.

Mohammed urged President Tinubu to focus on resolving Nigeria’s critical issues rather than engaging in personal attacks.

Tinubu Nominated Five Ministers In Buhari’s Cabinet – Dalung

Solomon Dalung, former Minister of Youths and Sports, has stated that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was responsible for nominating five ministers to the cabinet of the former President Muhammadu Buhari, as well as the former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

Dalung made the claim during a recent appearance on the Politics Today program on Channels Television.

This assertion directly contradicts statements made by President Tinubu, who had previously denied any involvement in ministerial appointments during the Buhari administration.

Tinubu had dismissed allegations of being part of a “cabal” that was said to have manipulated the Buhari government, and he further emphasized his stance during his campaign visit to Ogun State, coining the popular term “Emilokan” (it’s my turn).

However, Dalung argued against Tinubu’s position, stating, “I mentioned that as we continue to place blame on the Buhari government and shift responsibilities, Buhari was essentially a stranger in his own administration. It was run by the current president. He (Tinubu) nominated five ministers and even the vice president.”

Dalung had previously accused the political elite of sidelining Buhari, leaving him isolated in his own government.

In a December podcast on Channels TV, Dalung criticized the power dynamics that emerged during Buhari’s presidency, claiming a “power cult” hijacked the administration, preventing Buhari from fulfilling his campaign promises.

Dalung elaborated on his statement, saying, “What I meant by Buhari being a stranger in his own government was that the government did not reflect the intentions of those who supported his election. Instead, a power bloc took control, and the original promises made during the campaign were abandoned. Buhari was unable to fulfill those promises because of this shift in power.”

While President Tinubu has admitted to nominating Osinbajo as Vice President under Buhari, he previously shared that he was asked to suggest three candidates for the position but chose to nominate Osinbajo alone, reasoning that submitting only one name would prevent the emergence of additional contenders..

Nnamdi Kanu Opposes FG’s Request To Resume Trial, Insists On Justice Nyako’s Recusal

Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has opposed the Federal Government’s request to resume his trial.

His legal representative, Aloy Ejimakor, disclosed this in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday.

Kanu, according to his lead counsel, rejected the Federal Government’s effort to restart the trial and insisted that the trial judge, Justice Binta Nyako, should recuse herself from the case.

Ejimakor emphasized that Justice Nyako’s decision to step aside was still valid and in effect.

“Our position is based on the fact that Justice Nyako entered and enrolled an order recusing herself on September 24, 2024, and to date, that order remains extant and subsisting. It has not been set aside by any competent court,” Ejimakor explained.

He further accused the prosecution of attempting to mislead the court, insisting that Kanu no longer has a case before Justice Nyako.

“For the avoidance of doubt, as of September 24, 2024, the defendant no longer has any case to answer before Justice Binta Nyako,” Ejimakor added.

Kanu, who is facing seven charges of treasonable felony and terrorism, has denied all allegations.

He was first arrested on October 14, 2015, after returning to Nigeria from the United Kingdom. He was granted bail in 2017 on health grounds after being detained at Kuje Correctional Facility.

After a military raid on his home, Kanu fled the country and returned to the UK but was re-arrested in Kenya in 2021 and repatriated to Nigeria, where he has been detained by the Department of State Services.

At the last court session on September 24, 2024, Kanu requested that Justice Nyako recuse herself, citing a loss of confidence in her ability to handle the case.

Justice Nyako agreed to step down and referred the case file to the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court for reassignment.

However, the Chief Judge returned the case to Nyako, arguing that, having handled the matter since 2015, she was best positioned to conclude it.

The Chief Judge directed that if Kanu still wanted her to step aside, he needed to file a formal motion with an affidavit outlining his reasons, serve it on the prosecution, and await Nyako’s determination.

Despite this, the Federal Government’s counsel, Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), requested a new trial date in a letter dated December 5, 2024, addressed to the Deputy Chief Registrar of the Federal High Court.

Awomolo contended that the Chief Judge’s decision reinstated Justice Nyako as the trial judge.

During previous proceedings, Kanu had forcefully demanded Justice Nyako’s withdrawal, stating that he no longer trusted her impartiality.

He also repeated his objections to her handling of his repeated bail applications, which were turned down by the judge.

Addressing the judge, Kanu said, “My Lord, I have no confidence in this court anymore and I ask you to recuse yourself because you did not abide by the decision of the Supreme Court. I can understand it if the DSS refused to obey a court order, but for this court to refuse to obey an order of the Supreme Court is regrettable. I am asking you to recuse yourself from this case.”

In response, Awomolo urged Justice Nyako to disregard Kanu’s claim of disobeying a Supreme Court order and continue with the trial.

“My Lord, you should not recuse yourself on the basis of this mere observation which does not have anything to do with the Supreme Court. It is an incompetent observation. We urge this court to proceed with the hearing,” Awomolo stated.

However, Kanu objected vehemently, waving a document he said was a copy of the Supreme Court’s ruling.

He read aloud a section that called into question the impartiality of the trial court. Kanu insisted that his objection was not personal but was based on his belief that the trial was inconsistent with constitutional provisions.

In the end, Justice Nyako confirmed her decision, saying, “I hereby recuse myself and remit the case file back to the Chief Judge.”

Nigerian Terms, ‘Japa, Agbero, 419, Suya’ Others Now Part Of Oxford Dictionary

A fresh batch of Nigerian words has been added to the Oxford English Dictionary (OED), offering the world a glimpse into Nigeria’s vibrant cultural and linguistic landscape.

The newly added terms showcase the everyday expressions of Nigerians, including popular street slang, Pidgin English, and regional dialects, which are increasingly becoming recognizable across Africa and internationally.

The updated entries reflect the diversity of Nigeria’s various ethnic groups and the social dynamics of the country.

Some of the words now included are japa, 419, agbero, abi, area boy, yahoo boy, yahoo, Edo, Kanuri, jand, cross-carpet, kobo, naija, and suya.

These entries are categorized as both nouns and verbs in some cases. For example, japa and jand are now recognized in both grammatical forms.

To help non-Nigerians better understand these terms, the OED has included pronunciations alongside the words.

Dr. Kingsley Ugwuanyi, an OED consultant who assisted in the inclusion process, explained that the editors used corpora collections of texts to identify words that are widely used and frequently encountered in Nigerian conversations.

He emphasized that the selection criteria were based on factors such as frequency of usage, age of the words (especially those in use for 10 years or less), and their social significance.

In a post on LinkedIn, Dr. Ugwuanyi shared his excitement over his role in drafting the new words and providing the pronunciations for the OED.

“When you explore the OED online and click on the pronunciations, you will hear my voice bringing these words to life,” he said.

This follows a similar initiative in 2020 when 29 Nigerian-specific words, such as danfo, okada, next tomorrow, and mama put, were added to the OED, further cementing Nigeria’s cultural impact on global language.

2027: El-Rufai, Al-Mustapha, Other Notable Opposition Leaders Meet At SDP Secretariat

Ahead of the 2027 general elections, a significant meeting took place at the national headquarters of the opposition Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Abuja.

The gathering saw the former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir el-Rufai, alongside other prominent opposition figures.

Notably present was Major Hamza Al-Mustapha (rtd), the 2023 presidential candidate of the opposition Action Alliance (AA) and former Chief Security Officer to General Sani Abacha.

Although details of the meeting remain undisclosed, it is widely speculated that the discussions were part of ongoing efforts by opposition politicians to unite and form a formidable coalition for the 2027 elections.

The timing of the meeting aligns with growing efforts by opposition leaders to create a strong alternative to challenge the ruling party.

El-Rufai, once a staunch supporter of President Bola Tinubu, has become a vocal critic of the current administration.

He was notably excluded from the recent ministerial list after the Senate withheld his confirmation, citing security concerns from the Department of State Services (DSS).

Other notable figures who were similarly excluded include former Taraba Senator Sani Danladi and Delta State nominee Stella Okotete.

The meeting was confirmed by Segun Showunmi, a former spokesperson for Atiku Abubakar, who shared updates on his Facebook page.

He described the gathering as a “strategic meeting” aimed at reviewing the state of opposition efforts in Nigeria, facilitated by H.E. Shehu Gabam, Chairman of the SDP.

This development follows recent calls from Dr. Salihu Lukman, the former National Vice Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the North West, for opposition leaders, including disillusioned members of the APC, to unite and form an alternative political platform.

Lukman, who resigned from the APC in 2024, expressed the belief that only through a functional political party that respects its rules can the APC be effectively challenged.

He emphasized the importance of producing a democratic leadership alternative in the 2027 elections.
