Just In: Nnamdi Kanu’s Case Reassigned To A New Judge After Six Months

The case of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has been reassigned to a new judge by the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice John Tsoho.

This comes six months after the previous judge handling the matter withdrew from the case.

Kanu’s lead counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, confirmed the reassignment, revealing that his legal team received two official correspondences before their scheduled visit to Kanu.

First, from the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), was a response to their request for administrative intervention to expedite the reassignment.

The second, from the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, formally notified them of the change.

Kanu and his legal team have expressed appreciation to the CJN for the intervention and to the public for their continued support in ensuring due process is followed.

Ejimakor emphasized that the delay since September 2024 had significantly affected Kanu’s constitutional right to a fair and timely trial.

“With this latest development, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and his defense team will now redirect their focus towards preparing for the next phase of legal proceedings,” Ejimakor stated.

Kanu, who has been in detention since June 2021, maintains his innocence and has consistently demanded a fair judicial process.

The reassignment is expected to provide a new direction in the ongoing legal battle.

VC Appointments: Stakeholders Decry Lack Of Merit As Culture Of Impunity Creeps Into Universities

Concerns over the declining integrity of Nigeria’s higher education system have intensified following recent controversies surrounding the appointment of Vice Chancellors (VCs) in various universities.

Stakeholders fear that the entrenched culture of impunity in the country is making its way into the heart of tertiary institutions, threatening the credibility of their leadership selection processes.

At the center of the debate is the increasing influence of vested interests in the selection of university leaders.

Critics argue that the process is becoming less about merit and more about political maneuvering, with procedures being ignored or manipulated to favor preferred candidates.

Under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, irregularities in VC appointments have surfaced in multiple institutions, including Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), the University of Abuja (UNIABUJA), and the Federal University of Health Sciences, Otukpo, Benue State.

These cases prompted the federal government to intervene, leading to the dissolution of governing councils and the removal of appointed officials.

At UNIABUJA, for instance, the governing council attempted to install a VC who did not meet the mandatory five-year post-professorial experience requirement.

The move sparked protests, which only subsided after President Tinubu dissolved the council and removed the improperly appointed VC.

Just as those controversies were unfolding, another storm emerged at Admiralty University of Nigeria (ADUN), Ibusa, Delta State, where the selection of a new Vice Chancellor took an unexpected and contentious turn.

To ensure a credible and transparent selection process, ADUN reportedly engaged KPMG, a globally respected consulting firm, at a cost of N25 million.

Following a rigorous evaluation, Professor Lucian Obinna Chukwu, a Marine Biology professor and Deputy Vice Chancellor at the University of Lagos, emerged as the top candidate with a score of 83.41 percent.

However, despite leading the selection process, Chukwu was overlooked in favor of Professor Ogbogbo Christopher of the University of Ibadan’s Department of History, who ranked second.

The decision shocked observers, especially as the announcement was made by the university’s Registrar without the involvement of the Pro-Chancellor, Rear Admiral Dele Ezeoba (rtd).

Ezeoba swiftly dismissed the appointment as illegitimate, citing Section 6(8) of the university’s enabling law, which specifies that only the Pro-Chancellor can convene a governing council meeting.

He stated that he had neither summoned nor attended the meeting that led to Ogbogbo’s appointment.

Stakeholders have pointed out that the meeting of February 28, which purportedly endorsed Ogbogbo, did not follow due process.

The absence of the Pro-Chancellor and questions over the Registrar’s authority to announce the appointment have fueled concerns about the university’s governance.

Ezeoba criticized the process, arguing that if the institution did not intend to select the highest-scoring candidate, it was wasteful to spend millions on an independent assessment.

He also emphasized President Tinubu’s stance that university leadership should be based on merit.

On the other hand, ADUN’s Registrar, Isaac Mankilik, defended the selection, stating that the university was only required to pick from the top three shortlisted candidates and was not bound to appoint the highest scorer.

Despite the controversy, the Federal Ministry of Education later endorsed Ogbogbo’s appointment.

A statement signed by the ministry’s Director of Press and Public Relations, Folasade Boriowo, on March 5, declared that after reviewing the selection process, the ministry found Ogbogbo to be the most eligible candidate.

The statement emphasized the government’s commitment to merit and fairness while referencing the declassification of the council’s extraordinary meeting report.

This endorsement has not quelled concerns among education stakeholders, many of whom fear that procedural violations in VC appointments could undermine the credibility of Nigerian universities.

Admiralty University, which operates under the ethos of the Nigerian Navy and prides itself on professionalism and excellence, now finds itself at the center of a leadership crisis.

With its selection process under scrutiny, questions remain about the long-term impact of these governance lapses on Nigeria’s academic institutions.

For many observers, the issue extends beyond ADUN.

If universities continue to disregard due process in leadership appointments, the consequences could be far-reaching, potentially damaging the reputation of Nigerian tertiary institutions and weakening their ability to attract top talent.

While the Ministry of Education’s endorsement appears to have settled the matter administratively, the broader implications of this case suggest that the battle for merit-based university leadership in Nigeria is far from over.

Man Killed After Removing Member From WhatsApp Group

A Pakistani man has been charged with murder after allegedly shooting the administrator of a community WhatsApp group for removing him from the chat, police confirmed on Saturday.

The incident took place on Thursday evening in Peshawar, the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, a region with a history of sectarian violence.

According to police reports and witness statements, the victim, identified as Mushtaq Ahmed, had removed a man named Ashfaq from the WhatsApp group following a disagreement.

In an attempt to resolve the issue, both men reportedly agreed to meet in person.

However, instead of reconciliation, Ashfaq allegedly arrived armed and fatally shot Mushtaq.

Police documents seen by AFP indicate that Ashfaq was angered by his removal from the group, which led to the fatal confrontation.

Authorities have since charged him with murder.

The tragic incident highlights ongoing concerns over the easy access to firearms in the region, the influence of tribal customs, and the challenges of law enforcement in preventing such acts of violence.

Anambra 2025: APC Screens Governorship Aspirants Ahead Of Party Primaries

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has commenced the screening of its governorship aspirants in Anambra State ahead of the party’s primary election scheduled for April 5.

The seven-member screening and appeal committee, chaired by former Katsina State Governor Ibrahim Shema, was officially inaugurated on Friday by the APC National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, at the party’s headquarters in Abuja.

Seven aspirants successfully purchased and submitted the N50 million nomination and expression of interest forms before the February 25 deadline.

They include Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, Nicholas Ukachukwu, Chukwuma Umeoji, Paul Chukwuma, Onunkwo Johnbisco Obinna, Valentine Ozigbo, and Edozie Madu.

Speaking at the inauguration, Ganduje urged the screening panel to ensure fairness and transparency, emphasizing the need to prevent disputes that could lead to legal battles.

“I am confident in the members of this committee, especially the chairman, who has vast experience as a two-term governor. I urge you to conduct a thorough and just screening process to avoid any post-primary litigations,” Ganduje said.

After completing his screening, Chukwuma, a former APC National Auditor, expressed confidence in his qualifications and the party’s ability to win the Anambra governorship election.

“I came well-prepared, and the process went smoothly. I am confident in my ability to fly the party’s flag and lead APC to victory in Anambra. While all aspirants are qualified, I believe I have the strongest credentials,” he stated.

He also supported the party’s decision to adopt the indirect primary method, stating that he was comfortable with any process chosen by the leadership.

On the first day of screening, three aspirants—Chukwuma, Okonkwo, and Ukachukwu—were evaluated.

The remaining four will face the committee on Saturday.

Women Groups Condemn Senator Natasha’s Suspension, Threaten Protest

A coalition of women’s rights organizations under the Coalition for Women in Governance has strongly rejected the suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, describing it as an attack on democracy and an attempt to suppress women’s voices in leadership.

The coalition has vowed to stage a massive protest if the Senate does not reverse its decision.

Senator Natasha, who represents Kogi Central, was suspended for six months on Thursday after she submitted a petition alleging sexual harassment by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Friday, Ambassador Zainab Mohammed, a prominent leader of the coalition, criticized the Senate’s action, stating that it violated a court order that had barred any disciplinary action against the senator.

“The Senate’s decision is not just an attack on one woman; it is a direct assault on democracy and the rights of her constituents. This sets a dangerous precedent that discourages accountability and silences those who challenge power,” Mohammed said.

She called for Natasha’s immediate reinstatement and urged the Senate to respect judicial rulings.

“The true strength of democracy lies in actions, not mere words. If this injustice is not addressed, we will take to the streets to ensure that justice prevails,” she added.

Dr. Jophia Gupar, President of the Pan African Young Women Development Initiative, emphasized that Natasha’s suspension affects all Nigerian women, not just the senator herself.

“This is bigger than Natasha. It’s about protecting all women in leadership from intimidation and silencing. What message does this send to young women aspiring for political office?” Gupar questioned.

She also criticized the three other female senators for their silence on the issue, warning that their inaction could have long-term consequences.

“If they choose to remain silent now, they should remember that tomorrow it could be them or their daughters. There is such a thing as karma,” she said.

FG Launches Free C-Sections, Pregnancy Complication Treatments To Reduce Maternal Deaths

The Federal Government has introduced free treatment for pregnant women facing complications, including cesarean sections, as part of efforts to reduce maternal mortality in Nigeria.

Professor Ali Pate, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, announced this initiative on Friday during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today.

He emphasized that the program aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to improving healthcare and ensuring no woman dies due to financial constraints.

“Emergency obstetric complications, including cesarean sections, will now be treated for free in certified health facilities,” Pate stated.

The initiative also covers other critical pregnancy-related emergencies such as excessive bleeding and obstructed labor.

The minister explained that empanelled facilities providing these services will be reimbursed to sustain the program.

“The President is clear that the health and wellbeing of Nigerians are central to his vision. This initiative removes financial barriers and ensures women receive life-saving care without worrying about costs,” he added.

As part of ongoing health sector reforms, the Federal Government is collaborating with the Health Insurance Authority to mobilize resources for timely reimbursements to participating healthcare centers.

Earlier this year, the Federal Government disbursed N87 million to support 2,819 women under the Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (CEmONC) program.

According to data from the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the CEmONC initiative covers treatment costs for the five leading causes of maternal mortality in Nigeria:

  • Hemorrhage (excessive bleeding)
  • Preeclampsia (pregnancy-induced high blood pressure)
  • Sepsis (severe infections)
  • Post-abortion complications
  • Obstructed labor

This initiative is part of the Maternal Mortality Reduction Innovation Initiative, aimed at significantly lowering maternal and newborn deaths across the country.

With this intervention, the government hopes to improve maternal healthcare access and prevent avoidable deaths, reinforcing its commitment to public health and social welfare.

Tinubu Appoints Former INEC Chairman, Prof. Jega As Presidential Adviser On Livestock Reforms

President Bola Tinubu has appointed Professor Attahiru Jega, former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), as Presidential Adviser and Coordinator of Presidential Livestock Reforms.

The appointment was disclosed by Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, in a statement on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday night.

Jega, who served as INEC Chairman from 2010 to 2015, will now play a key role in driving livestock reforms across the country.

“President Bola Tinubu appoints Professor Attahiru Jega as Presidential Adviser and Coordinator of Presidential Livestock Reforms,” Onanuga announced.

The appointment follows Tinubu’s decision in July 2024 to create the Ministry of Livestock Development to tackle longstanding conflicts between farmers and herders.

The ministry, established on the recommendation of the National Livestock Reforms Committee, aims to implement policies that will modernize livestock management and reduce violent clashes between farmers and nomadic cattle herders.

Jega, a former Vice-Chancellor of Bayero University, had previously co-chaired the Presidential Livestock Reforms Committee alongside Tinubu.

The committee’s work led to the creation of the Livestock Ministry and other sustainable solutions for the sector.

At 68 years old, Jega remains an influential figure in governance.

He is a member of the International Elections Advisory Council and currently serves as the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Sa’adatu Rimi University of Education, Kano State.

Anambra Students Vow To Buy Nomination Form For Soludo’s Re-Election

Students in Anambra State have pledged to purchase the nomination form for Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s re-election ahead of the November 8, 2025 governorship election.

The commitment was made by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Joint Campus Council, Anambra State, during a press briefing in Awka on Friday.

Speaking on behalf of the students, Okoye Okpara, Chairman of the council and National Coordinator of the Solution Students Movement of Nigeria, said the decision was driven by Soludo’s exemplary leadership and dedication to youth development.

He urged the governor to publicly declare his re-election bid, warning that if he failed to do so within 30 days, students would stage protests across Awka, Onitsha, Nnewi, and Ekwulobia to demand his declaration.

“The protest will not be destructive,” Okpara clarified. “It is simply to compel the governor to make his ambition known. The election is just nine months away, and we believe it’s time for him to declare his intention.”

He highlighted Soludo’s impactful policies, particularly the ‘One Youth, Two Skills’ initiative, which has benefited students across the state.

“We are taking this step to appreciate the governor’s commitment to students’ welfare and the transformation of Anambra State,” he added.

The students reiterated their full support for Soludo’s second-term bid, emphasizing their readiness to mobilize resources for his nomination form as a mark of gratitude for his governance approach.

Seven Dead, One Injured In Niger Tanker Explosion

The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) has confirmed the deaths of seven people and the injury of one individual following a tanker explosion in Karamin Rami village, Mashegu Local Government Area.

According to NSEMA’s Director General, Alhaji Abdullahi Baba-Arah, the incident occurred on March 4 at around 6:30 pm when a tanker, struggling to navigate a poorly maintained road, overturned and spilled its content, Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), into a nearby stream.

The leaked fuel reportedly ignited after coming into contact with a water pump used by dry-season farmers, triggering a fire that spread back to the tanker and caused a massive explosion.

The fire extended to nearby farmlands, burning farmers and destroying rice fields, fruit crops, and vegetation.

The deceased victims have been identified as Rafiatu Sahabi, Ramlat Shehu, Rashida Abdullahi Raliya, Abdulrahman, Zainab Ahmed, Zuwaira Idrisu, and Maryam Nura. Meanwhile, the sole survivor, Maimuna Isah, is currently receiving medical treatment at Saho Rami Primary Health Care Centre.

Authorities have urged caution when handling flammable substances, especially in farming communities, to prevent such tragedies in the future.
