Police Deny Claims Of Missing Arms, Say Weapons Were Taken During Unrest

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has dismissed reports alleging that over 3,000 firearms are missing from its inventory, clarifying that the claim is based on a misinterpretation of a 2019 audit report by the Office of the Auditor-General of the Federation (AuGF).

According to the police, the report did not state that the weapons were “missing” but rather described them as “unaccounted for,” a distinction the Force believes was misrepresented by some media outlets.

The Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, in a statement, expressed the police’s concern over the reports and provided further clarification.

He said: “These allegations are misleading and inaccurate. The Force wishes to clarify that this report appears to stem from an assessment of the report by the Office of the Auditor-General of the Federation (AuGF), dating back to 2019, likely reflecting records compiled prior to the current Inspector-General of Police’s tenure.

“In the report, according to Issue 3b, Sub (iii), it is stated that 3,907 arms were unaccounted for and not ‘missing’ as speculated by the news.

“It is important to acknowledge the challenges faced by the police during periods of civil unrest, during which several police officers were killed and their arms carted away, as well as attacks and looting of police facilities and armories, resulting in the loss of arms.

“However, every effort has been made to account for the arms that were taken, while many have been recovered back into the arms holdings of the Force at the moment.

“We also note that when auditors conduct visits to our armories, they may not find all arms present at the time due to the issuance of weapons to personnel for operational purposes, many spanning months depending on the nature of such operations.

“Consequently, this may lead to misconceptions regarding the accuracy of audit reports.

“Furthermore, the Nigeria Police Force has a statutory and annual internal auditing process in accordance with the provisions outlined in the Police Regulations, administrative instructions, and standard operating procedures (SOP), which include stringent measures to ensure controlled movement and proper accountability of arms.

“Throughout our audits, there has been no outrageous record of unaccounted or missing arms, as speculated in the 2019 report of the AuGF, despite some incidents that have been documented and managed.

“The Force has earlier defended the audit queries, which were hoped to help reconcile the discrepancies in the reports.

However, the hearing session presided over by the Senate Committee on Public Accounts has been postponed to Monday, February 17, 2025, giving ample time for a proper cross-analysis of records.

“Contrary to the make-believe and misleading reportage by some media houses, the IGP was not present when the senators were raising questions on the purported ‘missing’ firearms.

“The IGP appeared briefly before the Senate Committee on Public Accounts on Tuesday, February 11, 2025. He was asked to take the usual oath and explain why he did not honour previous invitations by the committee.

“The IGP responded to the satisfaction of the committee members and was thereafter excused to take his leave, while the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Police Accounts and Budget, stayed back to answer the queries of the committee.

“These queries related to the period that predated the administration of the current IGP. For emphasis’ sake, no such outrageous number of firearms is missing in the armories of the NPF within the stated period.

“Managing mischief and the spread of misinformation against the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has been a significant challenge in recent times. The NPF has, in recent times, made notable strides in stabilizing the internal security space, but malicious actors seek to undermine these efforts by striving to erode public confidence in the police through the spread of malicious content.

“It is important to note that the proliferation of misinformation, especially against institutions like the Nigeria Police, has far-reaching consequences, including compromising public safety, damaging reputations, and hindering the NPF’s ability to effectively maintain law and order.

“However, the NPF remains committed to maintaining transparency and public trust and will continue to uphold the security of the nation while honouring the duty to account for all operational materials entrusted to us.”

The police also recalled that during the #EndSARS protests, several police stations were attacked and looted, leading to the loss of arms and other essential materials.

Anambra In Crisis, Needs Urgent Redemption, Says APC Guber Aspirant, Prof. Okonkwo

A governorship aspirant under the All Progressives Congress (APC), Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, has vowed to restore power to the people and drive community-based development if elected in the November 8 Anambra governorship election.

Okonkwo made this commitment while addressing journalists on Wednesday in Ogidi, Idemili North Local Government Area of the state.

He criticized the current administration, accusing it of poor governance and failing to meet the expectations of the people.

“Anambra has witnessed poor governance and retrogression under the current administration, which has not done anything spectacular to deserve a second term,” he stated.

Okonkwo, the Founder of United Nigeria Airlines, decried the growing insecurity and economic downturn in Anambra, attributing them to an unfriendly business environment.

He warned that these challenges were stifling economic growth and forcing businesses to relocate from the state.

He emphasized the need for governments to position themselves strategically to maximize the benefits of Federal Government tax reforms by stimulating productivity and economic activities.

“Anambra is not faring well in terms of kilometers of roads constructed. Using public funds to build a fun city and naming it after yourself is not an achievement but sheer egoism. No serious leader names projects after himself while still in office.”

Okonkwo stressed that effective governance requires engagement with all segments of society, including investors, entrepreneurs, and ordinary citizens, to understand their challenges and address them adequately.

“Government must be able to relate well with a cross-section of society, including investors, entrepreneurs, and the middle or low class. That is the way to understand their challenges; it should not be distant from them,” he said.

He pledged that if elected, he would create an enabling environment that incorporates input from traditional rulers, town union leaders, and the business community to foster inclusive development.

According to him, APC has a strong chance of taking over power in Anambra, considering the alleged poor performance of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA)-led government.

He called for unity within the APC to maximize this opportunity.

On the issue of zoning, Okonkwo dismissed it as an internal arrangement within APGA, arguing that competence should take precedence over rotation.

“Zoning came into being in 2010 when a former governor wanted to go for a second tenure. He met the people from the North and promised to hand over to them, as he was the only one that would do one term at that time.

“Even when APGA produced a candidate, the current governor and other persons from the South contested for the ticket from other parties.

“Zoning is not an issue now. Anambra is in a fix. The economy is destroyed, businesses are shutting down, and insecurity is ravaging us. We need a sensitive government.”

Okonkwo maintained that his ambition is driven by a passion for the development of Anambra rather than desperation for power.

Enugu Court Nullifies Onuokaibe’s Igweship Claim, Declares Mburubu General Assembly Illegitimate, Orders Fresh Election

The Enugu State High Court on Wednesday, delivered a landmark judgment on the long-standing dispute over the Igweship of Mburubu, a community in Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu State.

The court ruled in favor of the Mburubu Town Union, declaring that Mr. Jerry Onuokaibe was not legitimately elected as the Igwe of Mburubu.

Instead, he had imposed himself on the community through the influence of a group known as the Mburubu General Assembly, which the court described as illegitimate.

Presiding over the case, Justice C.O. Ajah scrutinized the role of the Mburubu General Assembly in the selection and election process of the community’s traditional ruler.

“The Mburubu General Assembly is an unauthorized entity without any legal standing,” the judge ruled, describing the group as a “faceless organization and interloper.”

The court found that the group’s actions were not only unlawful but also without any legal backing.

Furthermore, Justice Ajah highlighted that the Mburubu General Assembly was not registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), making its decisions legally void.

The ruling also addressed the 1976 document that Mr. Onuokaibe had cited to justify his claim to the throne.

The judge dismissed the document, clarifying that:

“The 1976 constitution, which was presented as a foundation for his claim, was merely a guideline for traditional rulers in the old Eastern region. It was never a legally binding statute or gazette law for Mburubu.”

The court affirmed that the only recognized and enforceable legal document governing Mburubu’s traditional leadership is the 2003 Constitution of the Mburubu Town Union, which is legally acknowledged by both the Enugu State Government and the law.

Additionally, Justice Ajah clarified the rightful succession process for the Igweship of Mburubu, stating:

“The Igweship stool of Mburubu is open only to individuals from Uhuegbe village, which holds the second position in the order of seniority within the community.”

This ruling reaffirmed that Uhuegbe village holds the exclusive right to produce the next Igwe, while Mr. Onuokaibe, who hails from Umunafor village—the fifth in the order of seniority—is ineligible to contest the throne.

“Since his village does not hold the necessary position in the seniority order, his claim to the Igweship is unconstitutional and goes against the established traditions and legal framework of Mburubu,” the judge declared.

During the proceedings, the court differentiated between the outdated 1976 document and the 2003 Mburubu Town Union Constitution.

While the 1976 document outlined a rotational system for traditional rulers, the 2003 constitution revised and formalized the selection process based on village seniority.

The judgment also clarified the legal requirements for the election and removal of traditional rulers in Enugu State, stating that only processes that are officially gazetted by the government are legally valid.

“Traditional leadership elections before 1976 are invalid because the administrative structure of Enugu State and the establishment of Nkanu Local Government Area were not yet in place at the time,” Justice Ajah noted.

As part of the ruling, the court imposed a fine of N500,000 on both Mr. Onuokaibe and the Mburubu General Assembly, payable to the Mburubu Town Union and Chief Linus Igbudu.

The penalty was issued as a consequence of their role in disrupting peace within the community and wasting judicial resources.

The court further directed the Mburubu Town Union to organize a new Igweship election within 21 days.

The Enugu State Ministry of Rural Development and Chieftaincy Affairs was tasked with overseeing the process to ensure compliance with the 2003 Constitution of the Mburubu Town Union.

Enugu LP Executive Council Passes Vote of Confidence On State Chairman, Says Purported Suspension By Unidentified Group ‘A Hoax, Charade, Of No Effect’

The Enugu State Executive Council (SEC) of the Labour Party has passed a vote of confidence on the State Chairman, Dr. Barr. Casmir Uchenna Agbo, dismissing reports of his suspension as baseless and of no effect.

Speaking at a press conference today, the SEC described the alleged suspension, orchestrated by an unidentified group, as a “charade, null and void, and of no consequence.”

The council emphasized that such a pronouncement has no legal backing and is not recognized by the constitution of the Labour Party.

“Nobody—no group—can suspend a State Chairman except through the State Congress or the State Executive Council, and such a decision must be ratified by the National Working Committee (NWC),” the SEC stated.

The council further pointed out that the group behind the suspension lacks the authority to make such decisions, as only three of them are members of the SEC, which consists of 14 members, as clearly outlined in the NWC’s letter establishing the Enugu State LP SEC.

Despite the controversy, Barr. Agbo called for peace and reconciliation, urging party members to remain united.

“Obi is a leader and an asset to the Labour Party, just as the Labour Party is to Obi. The two must work together for greater success. A husband needs a wife to have children, just as a wife needs a husband,” he remarked.

Demonstrating a spirit of forgiveness, Barr. Agbo announced that no member of the group, including the involved Local Government Chairmen, would face suspension.

Instead, he appealed to all party members to prioritize unity and focus on strengthening the party ahead of future political engagements.

2027: Politicians Eyeing ZLP, Those Banking On Peter Obi’s Wave Bent On Destroying Enugu LP – Party Chieftain Alleges

The Labour Party (LP) in Enugu State is facing an existential crisis as internal wrangling, defections, and alleged political sabotage threaten its stability.

A party chieftain, Dr. Chukwudi Nnabuike in an interview with DAILY GAZETTE, accused political actors of deliberately weakening the party ahead of the 2027 general election.

Dr. Nnabuike alleged that some disgruntled politicians within the LP are secretly aligning with the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) as an alternative platform.

He warned that this move is part of a broader strategy to undermine the Labour Party in Enugu.

“There are individuals within our party who are not committed to its growth. Rather than build, they are looking for shortcuts. Some of them are already negotiating with the ZLP while pretending to be loyal to LP,” Nnabuike revealed.

DAILY GAZETTE recall that the Labour Party gained significant traction in Enugu following the 2023 general elections, largely due to the influence of its presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

However, since the elections, the party has struggled with defections and internal discord.

In March 2024, six members of the Enugu State House of Assembly elected on the Labour Party platform defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), significantly weakening the LP’s legislative influence.

Similarly, rumors recently surfaced about Senator Kelvin Chukwu representing Enugu East Senatorial zone leaving the party for the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) —claims he has since denied, insisting his resignation letter was forged.

Dr. Chukwudi Nnabuike also lamented that many who rode on the wave of Peter Obi’s popularity have now abandoned the party, further deepening its crisis.

“The problem is that some of these people never truly believed in the Labour Party. They only followed Peter Obi’s wave in 2023, but now that elections are over, they are either inactive or looking for alternatives. If we don’t reorganize ourselves, these same people will scatter the party before 2027,” he warned.

Despite the challenges, the chieftain maintained that LP remains a formidable force in Enugu, provided it can address internal weaknesses.

He called for party discipline, ideological commitment, and strategic leadership to prevent further defections and infiltration.

“The future of the Labour Party in Enugu depends on how we handle this crisis. If we allow personal interests to overshadow collective progress, we will lose everything we worked for,” he concluded.

Security Guard Jailed 18 Months For Defrauding Woman Of Chickens, Feed Money

A Magistrates’ Court in Jos has sentenced a 36-year-old security guard, Justice Terfa, to 18 months in prison for defrauding a woman of 30 day-old chicks and misappropriating money meant for their feeding.

Magistrate Shawomi Bokkos delivered the judgment on Wednesday after the accused pleaded guilty to the charge.

“The convict is sentenced to six months in prison with an option of a N30,000 fine. Additionally, he must pay N500,000 as compensation, failing which he will serve another one year in prison,” the magistrate ruled.

Earlier, Prosecutor Inspector Ibrahim Gokwat informed the court that the case was reported on December 21, 2024, at the Anglo-Jos Police Station by the complainant, Anthonia Osirho.

According to Gokwat, the convict was entrusted with 30 day-old chicks and given N300,000 for their feeding and medication.

“The chickens were meant for the Christmas celebration, but after rearing them, the convict sold 29 out of the 30 and diverted the money to his personal use,” the prosecutor stated.

The prosecution noted that the offence contravenes the Plateau Penal Code Law.

Policeman Who Raped Teenager In Lagos Sent To prison

Owolabi Akinlolu, the policeman who allegedly raped a 17-year-old resident of Lagos state in his office, has been remanded in prison custody.

Akinlolu, an officer attached at the Ogudu Police Station in Lagos, had promised to help the teenager retrieve her phone, which was stolen by ‘one chance’ robbers.

The suspect was said to have overheard the victim recounting her ordeal to her mother at her shop and offered to help track the phone.

“On June 29, officer Owolabi called my mum on her phone and told her he had arrested the person with my phone and my mum should send me to his police station and I went there. On getting there, I was told they made a mistake with the tracking, and that the person caught wasn’t the one with my phone,” the teenager said while narrating her ordeal to PUNCH.

“The officer sent his personal assistant to call me into his office and he showed me directions there. When I entered his office and greeted him, he replied and got up to lock the door and put the key in his pocket. I shouted, ‘Sir, why did you lock the door?’

“He started trying to pull my clothes off and I shouted, then he brought out a gun, cocked it, and threatened to shoot me if I shouted. Then he began harassing me and when I struggled with him he hit me on the back of my head with the gun and raped me.

“I saw his phone ringing and the caller was my mum, but he told me since I didn’t have a phone with me, I should tell her I didn’t get to his office and from now on I should be reporting at his office by 12 pm every day during school break or while returning from school that he had been watching me for two years and now I just fell into his trap.”

In July 2024, Mrs Aramide Olupona, mother of the victim, however, accused the police of trying to cover up the allegation.

“The suspect’s wife and the rest of his family have come to my shop to plead with me saying he would soon retire, but what about my daughter that was raped? Is it because I am a poor woman?”

At the Magistrate Court 11 on Tuesday, the prosecution counsel urged the court to remand the defendant.

The prosecution counsel, backed by a seven-paragraph affidavit, stated that the offence of defilement violates Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

Responding to the request, Magistrate O.O. Fagboun ordered the defendant’s remand at the Maximum Correctional Centre Kirikiri.

The Magistrate adjourned the case until March 11, 2025, for trial and further proceedings.

Just In: National Grid Collapses Again

Many Nigerians have been left without electricity following yet another collapse of the national grid.

The system failure occurred around 11am on Wednesday, causing a sharp decline in power generation from 4,064 megawatts to 1,203MW by 12 pm, before dropping completely to 0.00MW at 1 p.m.

This marks the twelfth collapse of the national grid in 2024 alone and adds to the over 100 incidents recorded in the past decade.

Confirming the latest system failure, the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) issued a statement on its X handle, saying:

“Dear Valued Customer, We regret to inform you that a system disturbance occurred on the national grid at 11:34 am today causing a power outage across our franchise areas.

“While gradual restoration of power supply has commenced, please be assured that we are working closely with relevant stakeholders to fully restore electricity as soon as the grid is stabilised. Thank you for your understanding and patience as we work to serve you better.”

Similarly, Ikeja Electric also informed its customers of the disruption, stating:

“Dear esteemed customers, please be informed that we experienced a system outage today, 12th February, 2025 at 11.34hrs affecting all our feeders.

“Restoration of supply is ongoing in collaboration with our critical stakeholders. Kindly bear with us.”

The repeated grid failures have raised concerns about the country’s power infrastructure, with many citizens and businesses bearing the brunt of frequent blackouts.
