Enugu 2027 And Options Before Chijioke Edeoga

By Sheddy Ozoene,

All through the last Yuletide, the grapevine in Enugu State was abuzz with speculations that Barr. Chijioke Edeoga, the Labour Party (LP) state governorship candidate in the 2023 election, was getting restless watching political actions from the sidelines.

Speculations centred on his possible move away from the party on which platform he came close to becoming the state’s helmsman, to either the All Progressives Congress (APC) that holds sway at the federal level or the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that was his nemesis in 2023.

Reports of his closed door meetings with leaders of the PDP in the state did not raise many eyebrows, and neither did his picture, which surfaced online with the state chairman of the APC, Barr. Ugochukwu Agballah and the Hon. Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Hon. Uche Nnaji.

Those who have followed his political trajectory in the past 2 years were prepared to swear they were mere pieces of propaganda.

That was until the event of Friday, January 31, 2025, gave flesh to the rumor when he hosted officials of the state PDP exco in his Enugu home.

The reality is that after evaluating the state’s political landscape and its changing dynamics, Edeoga appears to be considering dumping the LP for a new political platform.

The PDP visit was so well choreographed to massage his ego and provide him good reasons to decamp. In political parlance, it is called ‘soft landing’.

The team led by the state PDP Chairman, Martins Chinweike, explained that they were there on behalf of Governor Peter Mbah to ‘beg’ Edeoga to return to the party.

“We’re at the residence of His Excellency, Hon. Chijioke Edeoga…we’ve had a lot of discussions before now and today, we have come to consult with him and he’s very satisfied with our visit…I believe, from what he told us that we are going to have him back in the party.”

That to me was the clincher. Nothing can be more compelling than for a politician to be so openly ‘begged’ by a state governor.

Though Edeoga promised to respond to their request after consulting his supporters, one can correctly predict the outcome of the ‘consultation’.

Indeed, what transpired on Friday, January 31, was more of an engagement party between a beautiful political bride and the preferred suitor, the Peoples Democratic Party.

It should suffice at this point, therefore, to try making sense of the factors that brought Edeoga to this threshold.

To many, his possible political move sounds distasteful. Why would he abandon that platform that gave him fame and which became a rallying point against the PDP in Enugu State?

A good question, I dare say, except it brings us to another question: What other options does the man have? Events of the past 20 months have left him with only two options: to either stay back and languish in a party that has lost its soul or to seek new political adventures elsewhere. If he chooses the latter, the reasons are not far-fetched.

While opposition politics is essential for democracy, it has been difficult for him in the LP which now lacks basic organizational strength.

Like the fish that started rotting from the head, the once vibrant platform that was energized by Peter Obi in 2023 has become so debilitated by a festering leadership crisis at the national level which has weakened its structures down to the states, local government areas and the wards.

The scenario in Enugu State is even more pitiable as the party has become a shadow of itself in spite of its heroics in the last election.

Most of the 14 members elected as lawmakers to the state assembly have since decamped into the ruling PDP with only 6 of them still in the Labor Party.

For a man who left the PDP for the LP, Edeoga has found himself abandoned in the party and increasingly isolated from the two ends of the state’s political divide.

After a bruising electoral contest in which he was sapped psychologically and financially, he was ill-positioned to mount any strong opposition; the party’s elected officials who could have provided momentum, found it more expedient to join the ruling party in the state.

At the federal level, as many as 3 of the members in the House of Representatives, namely Barr. Cyriacus Umeha (Ezeagu/Udi) Hon. Sam Atu (Enugu North/Enugu South) and Hon. Chidi Obetta (Nsukka/Igboeze South) are believed to be aligning towards the APC.

So, who are still in the LP for Edeoga to consult? There are very few, indeed, and his promise to first consult his party leaders before giving the PDP a response was simply to fulfill all righteousness. The once-bubbling camp of the Labour Party in Enugu State has become deserted.

If indeed the speculation is true that he plans to defect to the APC or PDP, the big issue will be the moral question. It will be viewed as betrayal of the party that gave him the platform to challenge for the governorship in 2023.

For the thousands who viewed LP as a movement for political change, supported his ambition and braced the odds to vote for him, defection will smell like opportunism —using the party for personal gain and discarding it when convenient.

They would view him rightly or wrongly as a man who lacks credibility, one who prioritizes personal ambition over party loyalty.

But that will be one side of the coin.

In politics, ideological consistency is important, but so is political realism. The party Edeoga went into the contest with is no longer what it is today, and in the awkward position he finds himself today, his survival has become the overriding issue.

As the doctrine of political relevance emphasizes, a politician must remain active, strategically positioned, and influential to stay relevant. Idealists would always view it as detestable, yes, but that is the reality.

For a man who has been abandoned by the many elected officials on the party’s platform, Edeoga’s staying power must be running low, and he now runs the risk of fading into political obscurity and irrelevance.

In any case, has he been any use to the thousands of supporters who pinned their hopes – politically and economically – on him, and whom he is increasingly unable to cater for?

Edeoga finds himself at the crossroads and I don’t envy him a bit. While opting for the APC could position him for a strategic appointment at the federal level where he once served as a senior aide to former President Goodluck Jonathan, the attraction to the PDP is more compelling, obviously.

The rumour is thick in the air that the PDP ticket for the Enugu East Senate for 2027 is already being dangled in his face. If that is true, it becomes much easier to picture him returning to the PDP, a platform which will allow him to rebuild old relationships and position himself as a key player in the party’s future.

It’s a choice between the symbolism that the Labour Party represents and the tangible opportunities of political relevance – the lifeblood of any politician’s career – that PDP now offers.

Most Nigerian politicians who faced similar situations before now, afraid they would end up in the political wilderness, followed their heads rather than their hearts.

The more reason anyone can wager that Edeoga will return to the party that he called home for over 23 years before the governorship contest took him away.

For the PDP and Governor Peter Mbah, who has indicated a personal interest in Edeoga’s return, it will be a win-win situation for both sides.

While the possibility of another potent challenge to the governor’s second term ambitions becomes more remote, having Edeoga on his side would allow him take some naps with both eyes closed as permutations commence for the 2027 elections.

Need For Creation Of Anioma State In South-East Long Overdue – Orji Uzor Kalu

Senator  Orji Uzor Kalu, representing Abia North has expressed strong support for the creation of Anioma State from the present Delta State, arguing that it should be recognized as the sixth state in the South-East geopolitical zone.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday, Kalu, a former Abia State governor, emphasized that adding Anioma to the South-East would help address the long-standing issue of Igbo marginalization in Nigeria’s state structure.

“Anioma State should be created as the sixth South-East state. It is the only viable option,” Kalu said.

“Anioma people are Igbos, and they have never denied their identity.”

The proposal for Anioma State has been spearheaded by Senator Ned Nwoko, representing Delta North, who argues that its creation would correct a historical oversight and restore balance to Nigeria’s geopolitical arrangement.

Nwoko pointed out that the South-East is the only zone with just five states, compared to six in most other regions and seven in the North-West.

This imbalance, he noted, has led to fewer representatives from the South-East in the Senate (15 lawmakers) compared to 18 from other zones.

The proposed Anioma State would be carved out from nine local government areas in Delta State, aligning the South-East with the rest of the country in terms of state distribution.

Despite the strong advocacy for Anioma, the House of Representatives Committee on State Creation recently rejected all 31 proposals for new states across Nigeria, citing failure to meet constitutional requirements.

According to the committee, none of the requests—including that for Anioma—met the necessary legal and administrative conditions for consideration.

While the rejection presents a setback, proponents like Kalu and Nwoko remain hopeful that Anioma’s inclusion in the South-East will eventually gain political backing.

The issue continues to fuel discussions about equitable representation and structural reforms in Nigeria’s governance system.

Trump Stops Military Aid To Ukraine After Tense Exchange With Zelensky

U.S. President Donald Trump has suspended military aid to Ukraine, intensifying pressure on Kyiv to negotiate a peace deal with Russia, a White House official confirmed on Monday.

The decision follows a high-profile public clash between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, as the U.S. leader pushes for a rapid end to the war.

The White House said the move was part of a broader review of American assistance to Ukraine to ensure it aligns with Washington’s foreign policy objectives.

“The President is focused on achieving peace. We need our partners to be equally committed to that goal,” a White House official told AFP on condition of anonymity.

“We are pausing and reassessing our aid to determine if it is contributing to a long-term solution.”

The suspension has drawn sharp criticism from Congressional Democrats, who argue it undermines Ukraine’s ability to defend itself.

Gregory Meeks, the top Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, condemned the move as both dangerous and unlawful, urging Republican lawmakers to demand an immediate reversal.

Trump, however, defended his stance, insisting Zelensky must show “more appreciation” for U.S. support.

He warned that the Ukrainian leader “won’t be around very long” if he refuses to negotiate a ceasefire with Moscow.

According to The New York Times, the aid freeze takes immediate effect, affecting hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of military equipment currently en route to Ukraine.

The move could significantly weaken Ukraine’s ability to resist Russian forces, raising concerns among U.S. allies.

In response, Zelensky reiterated his commitment to ending the war, but insisted on the need for strong security guarantees before any settlement.

He blamed the lack of such guarantees for Russia’s 2014 annexation of Crimea and its 2022 full-scale invasion, adding that “real, lasting peace” must be backed by firm international commitments.

The pause in U.S. military aid has triggered fresh diplomatic efforts from Britain and France, with reports suggesting they are exploring a one-month ceasefire covering air, sea, and energy infrastructure.

However, Trump’s decision has rattled European allies, with Germany’s likely next chancellor, Friedrich Merz, accusing the U.S. president of “deliberate escalation”.

Meanwhile, Moscow has welcomed the development, with Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov accusing Zelensky of lacking diplomatic skills and blocking peace efforts.

Vice President JD Vance, speaking to Fox News, expressed confidence that Zelensky would “eventually” agree to negotiations.

“He’s not there yet, but he’ll get there. He has no choice,” Vance stated.

Amid the diplomatic fallout, reports have emerged of direct U.S.-Russia talks on ending the war—without Ukrainian or European involvement.

The secretive discussions have fueled concerns in Kyiv and among NATO allies that Washington may be seeking a deal that could compromise Ukraine’s sovereignty.

With tensions rising, Ukraine is bracing for the potential consequences of Trump’s foreign policy shift, while European leaders scramble to fill the security vacuum left by Washington’s sudden disengagement.

Katsina Community, Bandits Reach Peace Agreement As Abducted Victims Regain Freedom After Reconciliation Meeting

A reconciliation meeting between residents of Jibia Local Government Area, Katsina State, and armed bandits has resulted in the release of 10 kidnapped victims and the surrender of two AK-47 rifles by the criminals.

The peace talks, which took place on Friday, February 28, 2025, in Kwari village, were facilitated by the Jibia People’s Forum, led by Alhaji Gide Dahiru.

According to security analyst and counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama, who disclosed the development via his X handle on Monday, the meeting was attended by key community leaders, including Alhaji Sama’ila Mai Maasara, Chairman of the Jibia Business Association, and elder statesman Alhaji Haruna Sada Zare.

Former secretary of the Islamic Justice Commission, Sheikh Barrister Ibrahim Sabi’u, who also serves as a judge at the Katsina State Court of Reconciliation, emphasized that the negotiations were conducted under Islamic law to ensure a lasting peace agreement.

Reports indicate that notorious bandit leaders, Audu Lankai and Tukur Nigerian, were actively involved in the peace process.

As part of the agreement, residents demanded an end to attacks on Jibia town and surrounding communities, protection for farmers, and a halt to cattle rustling.

In response, the bandits pledged to respect government laws and cease criminal activities.

Confirming the breakthrough, Alhaji Babangida Bracket, a resident of Daddara, stated that the freed victims had been taken to the General Hospital in Jibia for medical care.

Rivers, Lagos, Osun Crisis: ZLP Urges Tinubu To Safeguard Democracy

The Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take decisive action to protect Nigeria’s democracy, warning that escalating political tensions in Rivers, Osun, and Lagos states could have severe consequences.

In a statement issued in Jalingo, Taraba State on Sunday, ZLP National Chairman Chief Dan Nwanyanwu revealed that the party had convened an emergency meeting to address what he described as “anti-democratic developments” in the affected states.

“We at ZLP strongly condemn the troubling political atmosphere in Rivers, Osun, and Lagos states. We urge President Tinubu to intervene and halt this disturbing trend, especially since some of the alleged instigators are linked to his political circle,” Nwanyanwu stated.

The party warned against the recurrence of past political crises, drawing parallels to the violent unrest in the Southwest during the ‘Wild Wild West’ era and the militant insurgency in the Niger Delta.

Nwanyanwu specifically highlighted the Rivers State crisis, questioning the legitimacy of 27 state lawmakers who defected despite no division at the national level.

He criticized their attempt to withdraw affidavits confirming their defection, calling it a political maneuver that undermines democratic principles.

He further decried the withholding of funds and other tactics fueling the crisis, warning that unchecked political manipulation threatens Nigeria’s democratic stability.

Recalling Nigeria’s pro-democracy struggles in the 1990s, Nwanyanwu reminded Tinubu of their shared activism, stressing that many current political actors were absent from that fight.

He urged the President to act swiftly, cautioning that any attempt to impeach Governor Sim Fubara through undemocratic means could trigger widespread unrest and potential economic sabotage by militant groups.

In a separate development, the Labour Party (LP) has lashed out at Val Ozigbo, accusing the former Anambra governorship candidate of political opportunism and betrayal following his departure from the party.

In a statement signed by LP National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, the party dismissed Ozigbo’s recent criticisms, branding him as a serial defector who only joins political platforms to serve personal ambitions.

“Ozigbo contested the 2021 Anambra governorship election under the PDP and lost. He later joined Labour Party—not out of loyalty, but to exploit the popularity of our presidential candidate. Now, he is turning against the very party that gave him relevance,” the statement read.

The LP maintained that Ozigbo’s exit reflects a pattern of political inconsistency, asserting that true party loyalty is built on principles, not personal gain.

2027: Kenneth Okonkwo Meets Atiku After Dumping Peter Obi

Former spokesperson of the Labour Party (LP) Presidential Campaign Organisation, Kenneth Okonkwo, has met with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate in the last election.

Okonkwo, a well-known Nollywood actor-turned-politician, was previously a strong supporter of Peter Obi, LP’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election.

However, in a post on his Instagram account, he explained his meeting with Atiku, describing it as a consultative session on Nigeria’s future.

“It’s a privilege and honour to be invited by His Excellency Atiku Abubakar for a consultative meeting on how best to chart a new course for our beloved country,” Okonkwo wrote.

“The situation in Nigeria today requires the cooperation of every well-meaning Nigerian to ensure that our country is restored to its path of greatness.”

Okonkwo had left the Labour Party in 2024, citing Obi’s failure to build the party into a strong political force.

He accused the LP flagbearer of not providing the leadership needed to transform the party into a credible alternative capable of challenging Nigeria’s “kakistocrats and kleptocrats.”

“After the 2023 general election, Nigerians, including me, had high hopes for the Labour Party. I believed that Peter Obi would seize the momentum and build a solid party of integrity with a strong grassroots base,” Okonkwo stated.

“However, I continued defending him, believing he would privately address the party’s challenges, but to no avail.”

Despite his dissatisfaction with the Labour Party, Okonkwo had earlier ruled out joining the All Progressives Congress (APC) or PDP.

Instead, he emphasized that his next political move would involve consultations and alliances with like-minded individuals.

“With this declaration, I am free to embark on negotiations and consultations to determine the next step in my political journey,” he stated.

“This does not include joining APC or PDP for now, but it does involve consolidating the Labour Party and exploring other options.”

2027: Count Us Out Of Any Coalition, Merger Talks With Any Political Party – Labour Party

The Labour Party (LP) has dismissed any possibility of merging with another political party ahead of the 2027 elections, insisting that such an option is not on the table.

In a statement issued on Monday in Abuja, LP’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, warned the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) against interfering in the party’s affairs, stating that the union has no authority to dictate its direction.

His remarks were in response to the NLC’s recent communique, signed by its President, Joe Ajaero, after the union’s National Executive Council meeting in Yola, Adamawa State.

The NLC had called for a rebranding of the party, suggesting a merger or coalition with like-minded groups to safeguard the interests of Nigerian workers within the LP.

However, Ifoh maintained that while the party remains open to alliances that will strengthen its position, a merger is not being considered.

The Labour Party and NLC have been at odds over party leadership, with the NLC refusing to acknowledge Julius Abure’s re-election as LP’s National Chairman following the party’s convention in Anambra last year.
