Nigerians’ Short Memory Enables Politicians To Act With Impunity – Amaechi

Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has alleged that many Nigerian politicians seek office solely to steal, kill, and cling to power, decrying the deep-rooted corruption in the political system.

Speaking at the National Conference on Strengthening Democracy in Nigeria, Amaechi criticized the lack of accountability in Nigerian politics and the public’s tendency to quickly forget past injustices.

He argued that this collective short memory allows politicians to act with impunity.

“All we hear here is typical Nigeria, and you’re clapping. That’s why politicians get away with anything,” he said.

He further asserted that Nigerian politicians escape consequences because the public fails to hold them accountable.

“They get away with murder because you have a short memory. None of you here can defend the votes. You have complained; Nigerians have been clapping for you.”

Amaechi also suggested that the current political climate under President Bola Tinubu would remain unchanged, as Nigerians often overlook past political failures.

He urged citizens to remember history instead of expecting reform from leaders who perpetuate the same patterns of governance.

Reflecting on his own political journey, Amaechi revealed that his entry into politics was driven by poverty and necessity after graduating in 1987.

He also emphasized his critical role in forming the All Progressives Congress and securing its victory in the 2015 elections.

“You can’t wish me away in the formation of APC; you certainly can’t wish me away. You can’t wish me away on how APC won the election, you can’t. But the truth is that if some of us did not stick out our necks to say PDP, Goodluck, we want to die with you,” he stated, referencing his stance against former President Goodluck Jonathan.

Amaechi also shed light on the role of financial inducements in Nigerian politics.

Recounting his experience at an APC rally, he claimed that many attendees were paid to be there, regardless of their actual political affiliations.

He recalled seeing women wearing “Jonathan for President” shirts at an APC event and was later told that they had been paid to attend.

“If tomorrow Tinubu comes with the same transport money, they will also come,” he said, highlighting the transactional nature of political rallies in Nigeria.

17 Contractors Received N2.4 Billion For Unfinished Projects – Report

A new report by Tracka, the service delivery arm of BudgIT, has revealed that 17 contractors were paid a total of N2.4 billion for 15 projects across nine states, yet none of the projects have been initiated.

Tracka, which monitors public projects and enables citizen feedback, detailed instances of unexecuted projects despite full or partial payments.

Among them, Mainstream Contractors received N401 million in December 2023 from the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing for road rehabilitation in Nasarawa State, but no work has been done.

Similarly, Icent Light Ltd was paid N153 million for fencing and landscaping projects in Delta State under the National Institute for Construction Technology, yet there is no evidence of execution.

Additionally, A3 Interbiz Link Service Limited received N88 million from the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria for constructing and equipping a primary healthcare center in Osun State, but the site remains untouched.

These cases are part of a broader issue uncovered in the Tracka 2023/2024 Report, Achieving National Development through Efficient Service Delivery, launched on January 30, 2025.

The report tracked 1,404 projects worth N282.5 billion across 25 states, revealing that while 51% of projects were completed and 24% were ongoing, 16% were not executed at all, and 9% were either abandoned or poorly implemented.

The report also assessed the performance of key government agencies. The Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) led with a 78% project completion rate, followed by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture (68%) and the Nigerian Rural Electrification Agency (65%).

However, poor-performing agencies included the Lower Benue River Basin Development Authority (20%) and the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs (16%), reflecting inefficiencies in project execution.

Expressing deep concern over the non-execution of critical public projects, Gabriel Okeowo, BudgIT’s Country Director, criticized the continued embezzlement and mismanagement of capital expenditure funds.

He attributed the problem to poor oversight and collusion between government agencies and contractors, which results in project abandonment and financial wastage.

“Nigeria faces significant infrastructure challenges, and yet, capital projects have become the biggest avenue for corruption,” Okeowo stated.

He called on the Federal Government, anti-corruption agencies, and lawmakers to take urgent action to address these issues, urging the ICPC and EFCC to investigate and prosecute contractors who fail to execute awarded projects.

“If these financial leakages are not addressed, Nigeria’s scarce resources will continue to be diverted away from real development needs,” he warned.

BudgIT also urged elected representatives to prioritize the completion of abandoned projects and ensure public funds are effectively utilized to benefit citizens.

Edo Governorship Tribunal Admits BVAS Data As PDP Challenges Over-Voting

The Edo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal has admitted Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) machines submitted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as evidence in the legal dispute over the September 21, 2024, governorship election.

The move follows a subpoena obtained by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) after INEC initially declined to release the devices voluntarily.

The BVAS data is expected to play a crucial role in the tribunal’s review, particularly in verifying allegations of over-voting raised by the PDP.

According to preliminary assessments, inconsistencies have emerged between the number of accredited voters recorded by BVAS and the final election results announced by INEC in certain polling units.

The PDP argues that in several locations, the figures declared by the electoral commission exceeded the actual number of accredited voters, a discrepancy that could significantly impact the outcome of the petition.

During the tribunal proceedings, a PDP collation agent from Akoko Edo Ward 9 testified under oath, stating that while voting was conducted properly in the 13 polling units of the ward, the results presented at the ward collation center did not match the records uploaded on INEC’s Result Viewing Portal (IREV).

He claimed that an alternative set of results was introduced at the collation center, prompting him to refuse to sign the result sheet.

A similar testimony was given by a PDP agent from Oredo Local Government, who alleged that the final results declared by INEC in Ward 1 did not align with the data from polling units or IREV uploads.

The tribunal accepted certified true copies (CTCs) of exhibits submitted by the PDP, which reportedly highlight discrepancies between official results and BVAS records.

Legal experts believe the tribunal’s acceptance of BVAS data as evidence marks a significant step in the case.

The Supreme Court had ruled that BVAS serves as the primary source of accreditation data, making it a critical reference for assessing election validity.

If substantial discrepancies are confirmed, it could bolster the PDP’s claims of electoral malpractice.

Meanwhile, Governor Monday Okpebholo and the All Progressives Congress (APC) legal team are expected to challenge the PDP’s claims as they prepare their defence.

APGA Challenges Atiku To Provide Proof Of Alleged N50 Million Bribe By APC

The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has issued a strong rebuttal to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s claim that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is offering N50 million bribes to opposition parties to weaken democracy in Nigeria.

Reacting to Atiku’s statement, APGA’s National Publicity Secretary, Mazi Ejimofor Opara, described the allegation as baseless and politically motivated.

He challenged Atiku to provide concrete evidence of such payments or retract his claim, insisting that making unverified accusations only serves to mislead the public and inflame political tensions.

“If Atiku is genuinely concerned about strengthening Nigeria’s democracy, he should provide specific details of the opposition parties that have allegedly received this money. Otherwise, he should stop peddling unsubstantiated claims,” Opara stated.

The controversy arose after Atiku, speaking at a national conference on democracy in Abuja, alleged that the APC was using financial inducements to compromise opposition parties.

The conference, organized by leading pro-democracy organizations, aimed to discuss the future of democratic governance in Nigeria.

APGA, however, dismissed Atiku’s remarks as mere political grandstanding, emphasizing its commitment to issue-based politics rather than sensational claims.

The party insisted that without credible proof, the former Vice President’s allegations should not be taken seriously.

20 Killed In South Sudan Plane Crash, One Survivor Reported

A tragic plane crash in northern South Sudan has claimed the lives of at least 20 people, with only one known survivor, according to Unity State’s Minister for Information, Gatwech Bipal Both.

The accident occurred around 10:30 a.m. local time (0830 GMT) near the oil fields in Unity State, shortly after the aircraft took off for Juba, the nation’s capital.

The minister confirmed that the plane went down approximately 500 meters from the airport.

“There were 21 people on board, and so far, only one person has survived,” Both stated.

The lone survivor, a South Sudanese engineer working at the oil fields, was quickly transported to Bentiu State Hospital for medical treatment.

The ill-fated Ukrainian passenger aircraft was chartered by the Greater Pioneer Operating Company (GPOC) and operated by Light Air Services Aviation Company.

It was reportedly on a routine flight when the crash occurred.

The plane’s manifest, seen by AFP and confirmed by local authorities, listed all 21 passengers as employees of GPOC—16 South Sudanese nationals, two Chinese nationals, and one Indian.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the crash, though preliminary speculation suggests a possible mechanical failure.

Photographs circulating on social media show the wreckage of the plane upside down in a field, with debris scattered across the area.

Some unverified images depict a body emerging from the twisted remains of the fuselage.

South Sudan, which gained independence in 2011, has struggled with economic and political instability.

The country’s unreliable transport infrastructure has contributed to frequent air accidents, often blamed on overloading or poor weather conditions.

In recent years, South Sudan has witnessed multiple deadly plane crashes.

In 2021, five people were killed when a cargo plane carrying fuel for the UN’s World Food Programme crashed near Juba.

In 2015, an overloaded Antonov aircraft crashed in Juba, killing 36 people. Meanwhile, in 2017, 37 passengers survived when their aircraft struck a fire truck on a runway in Wau before bursting into flames.

Atiku’s Claim of N50 Million Bribe Given To Opposition Parties Mischievous, Exists Only In His Imagination – Labour Party

The Labour Party (LP) has denied any knowledge of the alleged N50 million bribe said to have been paid to opposition party leaders by the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government, and has criticized former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar over his comments on the matter.

In a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, expressed surprise at Atiku’s remarks, calling them unfounded and reckless.

Atiku had previously accused the ruling APC of offering opposition leaders N50 million each in an attempt to undermine Nigeria’s democracy, a claim made at a national conference on strengthening democracy.

Ifoh questioned Atiku’s credibility, stating that it was inappropriate for such a prominent political figure to make allegations without presenting concrete proof.

He also emphasized that the LP’s leadership has never received financial support from any external sources, whether individuals, groups, or governments outside of the party’s membership.

“For us in the LP, we view that statement as demeaning, ignominious, reckless, and a letdown from someone like Atiku Abubakar,” Ifoh said.

He further clarified that the Labour Party runs a financially responsible administration funded internally, without relying on any external assistance, including from elected representatives.

Ifoh criticized Atiku for making such serious allegations without evidence, urging him to be more cautious in making sweeping statements about the opposition.

He also noted that the LP’s leadership has not received any external salaries, with the salaries of public servants being verifiable in the public domain.

Ifoh reiterated that opposition is vital for any thriving democracy, as it helps to keep the government in check and ensures broad democratic participation.

He called on Atiku to provide solid proof to back his accusations, warning that without such evidence, Nigerians might view his claims as politically motivated.

“We urge Atiku to provide evidence for his allegations; otherwise, Nigerians will regard his statements with skepticism,” Ifoh stated.

N80.2 Billion Fraud: Court Adjourns Yahaya Bello’s Trial To April 3

The Federal High Court in Abuja has postponed the trial of former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, in the alleged ₦80.2 billion fraud case to April 3, 2025.

The adjournment follows the commencement of witness testimony by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Bello faces a 19-count charge, including allegations of money laundering, breach of trust, and misappropriation of public funds.

During Wednesday’s hearing, the EFCC presented its first witness, Fabian Nwora, a property developer and chairman of Efab Properties Nigeria Limited.

Nwora testified that in 2020, his company sold a Maitama, Abuja property for ₦550 million to one Shehu Bello.

However, he later discovered that the sale agreement bore the name “Dr. Bello Ohianyi.”

He further revealed that in 2023, Shehu Bello returned, claiming that the EFCC was investigating the transaction and requested a refund. Following EFCC directives, Efab Properties refunded the ₦550 million in two installments, ₦400 million first, followed by ₦150 million.

Justice Maryanne Anenih admitted the sale agreement and deed of assignment as court exhibits before adjourning proceedings to April 3, April 24, and May 6 for continuation.

Earlier, Bello’s legal team, led by J.B. Daudu (SAN), objected to the testimony, arguing that the prosecution had not served them witness statements.

However, EFCC counsel, Kemi Pinheiro (SAN), dismissed the objections as an attempt to delay the trial.

Justice Anenih ruled in favor of proceeding with the case.

Sowore Pleads Not Guilty To Cybercrime Charges, Seeks Bail

Omoyele Sowore, former presidential candidate and activist, on Wednesday, pleaded not guilty to the 17-count cybercrime charges leveled against him by the Nigerian Police Force.

Sowore, who was arrested by the police on Monday, had been detained at the Intelligence Response Team facility in Abuja after he declined the administrative bail conditions offered by the authorities.

He was summoned to the Force Intelligence Headquarters over accusations of obstructing public officers, cyberstalking, disobedience to lawful orders, and preventing arrests.

During his arraignment before Justice Musa Liman, Sowore denied all the charges, which stemmed from his social media activity.

The charges were filed by the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, following Sowore’s posts on his verified X account, where he allegedly referred to Egbetokun as an “illegal IGP.”

The first charge stated, “On December 13, 2024, you, Omoyele Sowore, intentionally sent a message via your verified X account, causing a publication against IGP Kayode Egbetokun, calling him ‘illegal IGP.’ You knew the statement was false, and it was intended to incite disorder, violating Section 24(1)(b) of the Cybercrime Act, 2015 (as amended 2024).”

The second charge claimed that Sowore used the same platform to send a message calling Egbetokun “illegal IGP” and tagging the official Nigeria Police Force X handle, @policeNG.

This publication allegedly contained threats aimed at inciting Nigerians and damaging the reputation of the police force and its leadership.

A third charge referred to Sowore’s post on December 20, 2024, where he accused Egbetokun of pushing Nigeria toward another #ENDSARS protest, a statement that was also said to be false and capable of causing public unrest.

After pleading not guilty to all counts, Sowore’s lawyer, Marshall Abubakar, requested bail for his client.

Justice Liman adjourned the case until 3:00 p.m. for a ruling on the bail application.
