Netflix Refutes Exit Rumors, Reaffirms Commitment To Nigerian Market

Netflix has firmly denied rumors suggesting that it is withdrawing from the Nigerian market, despite reports from several publications claiming the streaming giant is retreating from the country.

The company emphasized that it remains committed to investing in Nigerian content.

The speculation began following comments from Nigerian filmmaker Kunle Afolayan at the 2024 Zuma International Film Festival.

Afolayan stated that Netflix had canceled several films it had previously commissioned, fueling concerns about the company’s future in Nigeria.

Afolayan reflected on the initial excitement when Netflix signed a three-film deal with him three years ago, but noted that despite the international success of the films, Netflix appeared dissatisfied with their performance in Nigeria.

“Thank God we had already filmed seasons two and three of ‘Anikulapo’ because the other filmmakers we worked with at the same time had their projects canceled,” Afolayan said, though he did not explicitly state that Netflix was pulling out of the Nigerian market.

His remarks, however, raised questions about the streaming platform’s commitment to the country.

This uncertainty is heightened by the recent exit of Amazon Prime from Nigeria in January 2024, which followed a large-scale marketing campaign and a lineup of Nigerian originals.

Despite this, Netflix has reassured its audience in Nigeria that it is not leaving. In a statement to TechCabal on Wednesday, a Netflix spokesperson said, “We are not exiting Nigeria. We will continue to invest in Nigerian stories to delight our audience.”

While the statement did not directly address Afolayan’s claims regarding canceled projects, it aimed to dispel any fears about the company’s departure from Nigeria.

The conversation around Netflix’s future in Nigeria has intensified, especially with the country’s rising inflation and devaluation of the naira, which have strained consumer spending.

Reps Call On FG To Strengthen Security In Southeast After Enugu Attacks

The House of Representatives has called on the Federal Government to enhance its efforts in addressing the escalating insecurity and banditry in the Southeast, particularly in Enugu State.

The call followed the adoption of a motion by Prof. Paul Nnamchi (LP-Enugu) during Wednesday’s plenary, urging the government to take urgent steps to address the root causes of the insecurity.

The House recommended better intelligence gathering, increased community engagement, and greater coordination among security agencies.

Prof. Nnamchi, who moved the motion, condemned the recent banditry attack on farmers in Mgbuji Eha-Amufu, located in Isiuzo Local Government Area of Enugu State.

The attack resulted in loss of lives, destruction of property, and the displacement of residents who depend on farming for their livelihood.

He highlighted that the region had experienced repeated violent attacks by armed bandits and herdsmen in recent years, creating an environment of fear, instability, and food insecurity.

Nnamchi further noted that the former Chief of Army Staff had deployed soldiers to the area in response to earlier attacks, leading to a reduction in the frequency of violence.

However, he expressed concern over the recent withdrawal of military personnel, which has left the community vulnerable to further attacks.

The representative emphasized that the government’s constitutional duty is to protect the lives and property of its citizens, ensuring peace and security across the nation.

He also warned that the continuing insecurity in Mgbuji Eha-Amufu poses a serious threat to national food security, as farmers are being forced to abandon their lands.

The House condemned the recent attacks and called for swift action to restore peace in the region.

‘You Should Be Proud of Me,’ Nigerian Pastor Breaks Silence After UK Court Ordered His Deportation

Pastor Tobi Adegboyega, the Nigerian-born UK pastor, has addressed recent reports regarding his potential deportation to Nigeria.

The pastor, who was previously the leader of the Salvation Proclaimers Anointed Church (SPA), which was shut down over allegations of a £1.87 million fraud, has lost his legal battle against deportation.

Despite his claims that the deportation violates his human rights, an immigration tribunal ruled that Adegboyega, aged 44, should be sent back to Nigeria.

The decision followed investigations into financial misconduct within his church.

Adegboyega, who is also the cousin of Star Wars actor John Boyega, took to his Instagram to address the issue.

He reassured his followers, saying, “I’ve heard a lot today, and I’m doing this because our friends, our fans, and people who are worried. I’m right here at home, no cause for alarm. Naturally, I dismiss things that have to do with retrogression.”

Adegboyega further emphasized, “Every Nigerian should be proud of me. I’ve survived all sorts, and the matter they are propagating is the smallest of matters. No panic. I love London city, it is my city, and nobody can do anything.”

Bill For Creation Of Another State Passes First Reading In Senate

A bill proposing the creation of a coastal state from the southern part of Ondo State has successfully passed its first reading in the Nigerian Senate.

Senator Jimoh Ibrahim (APC, Ondo South), the sponsor of the bill, is advocating for a constitutional amendment to establish the new state, which he believes will promote development in the riverine communities of Ondo’s Southern Senatorial District.

During the bill’s presentation, Senator Ibrahim expressed optimism that it would proceed smoothly through the second and third readings in future Senate sessions.

He emphasized that the creation of a coastal state would boost socio-economic development, particularly in the region’s riverine areas.

Addressing concerns about the inclusion of Ondo’s Southern Senatorial District in the proposed Ijebu State, Senator Ibrahim strongly rejected the notion, stating that the district should either remain part of Ondo State or be included in the new coastal state.

“The Ondo Southern Senatorial District can never be part of the proposed Ijebu State,” he stated, reaffirming his commitment to the success of the coastal state bill.
