Trump Unfazed By Trade War, Says No Rush To Speak With Chinese President

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has stated that he is in “no rush” to engage in talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping, despite escalating trade tensions between Washington and Beijing.

On Tuesday, China announced fresh tariffs on U.S. energy, vehicles, and industrial equipment in response to new levies imposed by the U.S. on Chinese imports.

The tit-for-tat measures have heightened tensions between the world’s two largest economies, yet Trump remains unfazed, dismissing the urgency of a discussion with Xi.

While speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump downplayed expectations of an imminent conversation with his Chinese counterpart.

His administration had previously indicated that a call could take place this week, but White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt later clarified that no schedule had been set.

“He is not going to allow China to continue to source and distribute deadly fentanyl into our country, that was the reason for this tariff,” Leavitt explained, emphasizing the administration’s firm stance on Beijing.

In retaliation, China imposed up to 15 percent duties on U.S. coal and liquefied natural gas, alongside a 10 percent levy on crude oil, agricultural machinery, and large-engine vehicles.

Beijing also signaled its intent to investigate U.S. tech giant Google and PVH Corp, the parent company of Tommy Hilfiger and Calvin Klein.

China’s Ministry of Commerce criticized the U.S. for what it described as a “malicious” tariff hike and vowed to take its complaints to the World Trade Organization (WTO).

Additionally, Beijing introduced new export controls on key industrial materials, including tungsten, tellurium, bismuth, and molybdenum—critical components in various manufacturing and technology sectors.

Although China remains a significant market for U.S. energy exports, its reliance on alternative sources like Russia has grown.

Last year alone, China imported $94 billion worth of Russian energy compared to just over $7 billion from the U.S.

While Trump remains firm on China, he has softened his stance toward Mexico and Canada, temporarily lifting planned tariffs on the two North American countries.

The decision came after Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau agreed to step up efforts against illegal migration and fentanyl trafficking.

Mexico has already begun deploying 10,000 troops to its northern border as part of the deal, while Canada has pledged to appoint a “Fentanyl Czar” and formally designate drug cartels as terrorist organizations.

Trump, who has often used tariffs as a foreign policy tool, reiterated his commitment to leveraging economic pressure to secure favorable outcomes.

He has previously described tariffs as the “most beautiful” word in the dictionary, signaling his continued reliance on trade measures to address global challenges.

With no immediate resolution in sight, the U.S.-China trade conflict appears poised to intensify, while Mexico and Canada work to avoid similar economic penalties.

Togo Court Sentences 2018 Protesters To 10 Years In Prison

A court in Lomé has sentenced 14 individuals to 10 years in prison for their involvement in unauthorized protests against the longstanding rule of the Gnassingbé family, which has governed Togo for over five decades.

The court found the accused guilty of plotting against state security and criminal conspiracy for their roles in demonstrations held in December 2018.

Among those sentenced is Abdoul Aziz Goma, an Irish-Togolese national, whose detention has drawn international criticism.

UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights Defenders, Mary Lawlor, condemned his imprisonment, stating that Goma was not physically present at the protests but had merely provided accommodation for demonstrators traveling from other parts of the country.

Lawlor also alleged that Goma has been subjected to torture while in detention.

In addition to the 14 individuals sentenced in court, four others who had fled the country were tried in absentia and handed 20-year prison terms.

The protests, which took place between 2017 and 2018, were fueled by demands for political reforms and an end to the rule of President Faure Gnassingbé, who succeeded his father, Gnassingbé Eyadéma, following his death in 2005.

Eyadéma had ruled Togo since seizing power in a 1967 coup.

The government responded to the demonstrations with a violent crackdown that resulted in multiple deaths.

Human rights groups and opposition leaders claim that at least 92 individuals arrested in connection with the protests remain in detention.

Labour Party Governorship Candidate Dumps Party, Joins APC

Engr. Udengs Eradiri, the Labour Party’s (LP) candidate in the last Bayelsa State governorship election, has officially joined the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s numerous developmental projects in his Agudiama/Ekpetiama community as a key motivation for his defection.

Eradiri, who registered as an APC member in Ward 10, Constituency 2, Yenagoa Local Government Area, said his community has benefited immensely from federal government projects executed through the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) under the leadership of Dr. Samuel Ogbuku.

These projects include potable water supply, shore protection, solar streetlights, and a one-kilometer road.

Beyond his immediate community, Eradiri noted that several other Niger Delta communities had witnessed similar infrastructural interventions, particularly through the ongoing “Light-Up Niger Delta” initiative and other NDDC programs.

He also revealed that the federal government had committed to additional projects in his community, including the remodeling of a secondary school and the construction of a quality lodge for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members.

Addressing a large gathering of APC supporters and community members, Eradiri praised the Tinubu administration for fostering peace and infrastructural development in the Niger Delta through initiatives like Tantita Security Services and NDDC-backed projects.

He highlighted Tinubu’s commitment to the region, citing the President’s recent assent to the Maritime University Bill and the University of Technology and Environment Bill for Ogoniland.

He also applauded the accelerated pace of work on the East-West Road, attributing its progress to the leadership of Works Minister, Dr. Dave Umahi.

Eradiri emphasized that Tinubu’s administration had provided strategic appointments to the Niger Delta, including the Head of Service, the Ministry of Petroleum, and key roles in the NDDC.

He credited the federal government’s pipeline surveillance contracts with boosting oil production and reducing criminal activities in the region.

“For me, the best way to appreciate a government that is delivering tangible results is to join hands with it,” Eradiri stated.

“President Tinubu has always been an advocate for restructuring Nigeria, and I have admired his leadership since my youth. Now is the right time to work with him to drive progress.”

He commended the Tinubu administration’s tax reforms, stating that they would encourage economic innovation and improve governance at the state and local levels.

He urged his supporters and stakeholders in the Niger Delta to align with the federal government’s Renewed Hope Agenda for national development.

Eradiri expressed his commitment to strengthening the APC in Bayelsa State and working with party leaders to ensure the success of the Tinubu administration’s policies.

Enugu Tanker Explosion: Death Toll Rises To 23 As Two More Victims Succumb To Injuries – FRSC

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed that the death toll from the recent tanker explosion at the Ugwu-Onyeama section of the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway has risen to 23, following the deaths of two more victims in hospital.

The Enugu State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Franklin Agbakoba, revealed this development in Enugu on Tuesday while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

He disclosed that the two deceased victims, both female, had been receiving treatment at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Ituku-Ozalla, and the National Orthopedic Hospital, Enugu, but unfortunately did not survive.

The tragic incident, which occurred on January 25 at approximately 11:30 a.m., was caused by brake failure in a fuel-laden tanker, leading to an explosion. Initial reports confirmed 11 fatalities at the scene before emergency responders arrived.

Over the following days, the death toll climbed to 18, then 21, and has now reached 23.

According to Agbakoba, among the five victims admitted to UNTH, one died at the end of the month, while another remains under medical care.

He further noted that three members of the same family, who were being treated at UNTH, chose to discharge themselves against medical advice and opted for traditional treatment at home.

At ESUTH Teaching Hospital, Parklane, Enugu, three female victims are still receiving treatment, while two others have been referred to the National Orthopedic Hospital due to severe burns.

Meanwhile, of the three victims initially admitted to the National Orthopedic Hospital, one has passed away.

Another patient referred from ESUTH has joined the remaining two survivors, while another referral from ESUTH reportedly failed to report to the orthopedic hospital for treatment.

Agbakoba previously reported that the explosion involved 44 people, as well as 16 vehicles both private and commercial and a commercial tricycle.

A total of 23 people sustained injuries, including eight males and 15 females, and were rushed to various government hospitals for medical attention.

BREAKING: Two Petrol Tankers Explode At Adamawa Filling Station

A massive fire outbreak has engulfed two petrol-laden tankers at an MRS filling station along Numan Road, near Yola International Airport, causing panic among residents.

The explosion, which occurred on Tuesday, led to a temporary blockage of the road leading into Yola, as onlookers gathered to witness the raging inferno despite the clear dangers.

Emergency responders, including firefighters and security personnel, arrived at the scene in an attempt to contain the fire.

However, reports indicate that the fire service may have run out of water, making efforts to control the blaze more challenging.

The incident comes at a time when Nigeria is grappling with a severe economic crisis, with petrol remaining a scarce and highly valuable commodity.

In recent months, the country has witnessed a series of deadly tanker explosions. In January 2025, at least 11 people lost their lives when a petrol tanker exploded on the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway due to brake failure.

In another tragic incident in Niger State, 86 people died while attempting to scoop fuel from a fallen tanker.

Other major fuel tanker explosions in recent times include:

  • January 2025: Five people killed in a tanker explosion in Agbor, Delta State.
  • October 2024: Over 170 deaths recorded in Jigawa State following a fuel tanker explosion.
  • September 2024: A tragic collision between a fuel tanker and a passenger-laden truck in Niger State resulted in 59 fatalities.

Authorities are yet to provide an official statement on the Adamawa explosion, but efforts to fully extinguish the fire and secure the area are ongoing.

Governor Mbah Signs Law Establishing One-Stop Tax Collection System, Grants Autonomy To Enugu Inland Revenue Service

Governor Peter Mbah has signed into law a bill aimed at streamlining tax administration in Enugu State, effectively eliminating multiple taxation and enhancing revenue collection efficiency.

The new legislation, known as the Enugu State Internal Revenue Service (Establishment and Consolidation of Revenue Administration) Law, 2025, establishes a centralized tax collection system while granting the state’s revenue agency full autonomy.

Speaking at the bill signing ceremony at the Government House, Enugu, Governor Mbah emphasized that the reform aligns with his administration’s commitment to improving the Ease of Doing Business and positioning Enugu as a top investment destination.

“I have engaged with business owners, private sector stakeholders, and market women, and a recurring concern has been multiple taxation—different people demanding payments under various pretexts. That ends today,” Mbah declared.

“With this new law, there is now a single, clearly defined revenue collection point. Whether you are a trader, business owner, or government agency, you will know exactly where to pay your tax and receive the appropriate receipt. No other entity will be authorized to demand tax payments.”

The governor explained that the law would consolidate all revenue streams, ensuring that both state and local governments receive their due allocations.

“This system is not new; it’s similar to how the Land Use Charge and VAT are collected centrally before being distributed appropriately. Now, all state and local government revenues will be managed under a unified structure,” he added.

Governor Mbah also highlighted the autonomy granted to the Enugu State Inland Revenue Service, allowing it to operate as an independent institution.

“The Revenue Service can now set targets, manage its workforce, and function professionally like any high-performing organization. This autonomy will enhance efficiency and accountability in tax administration,” he noted.

Addressing concerns about the state’s increased Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), Mbah clarified that no tax rates had been raised.

“Our revenue growth is driven by expanding the tax base, eliminating leakages, and leveraging technology not by increasing taxes. We have simply ensured that previously unaccounted-for revenues are properly documented and remitted to the state,” he explained.

The governor commended the Enugu State House of Assembly for its swift passage of the bill, acknowledging the lawmakers’ dedication to the state’s economic progress.

Speaker of the House, Hon. Uche Ugwu, described the law as a transformative step in revenue collection.

“This legislation will not only enhance the Ease of Doing Business but also boost the state’s revenue while sealing loopholes in tax administration. It is indeed a remarkable milestone for the people of Enugu State,” Ugwu stated.

Lagos Airport Supervisor Convicted For Diverting N11 Million

A Lagos High Court has convicted Mr. Mohammed Idris, a supervisor at the Hajj and Cargo Terminal Gate of Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos, for financial misconduct and corrupt self-enrichment.

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) prosecuted Idris before Justice O.A. Fadipe of the Ikeja Special Offences Court, alleging that he collected missing funds during his duty but failed to account for them.

ICPC counsel, Yvonne Williams-Mbata, presented evidence showing that N11,234,000 was unaccounted for under the defendant’s supervision between February 2001 and April 2021.

The offense contravenes Sections 26(1)(b) and 25(1) of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, 2000.

Justice Fadipe sentenced Idris to one year in prison on each of the two counts, with the option of a N1,000,000 fine for both counts. The sentences will run concurrently.

Additionally, the convict must maintain good behavior and enter a bond with the court registry in the sum of N2,000,000.

Failure to comply with these conditions will result in an additional 10-year prison term.

Tinubu  Rejects Bill Seeking To Establish Education University In Adamawa

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has refused to sign the Federal University of Education, Numan (Establishment) Bill, 2024, citing legal inconsistencies and typographical errors.

In a letter dated January 10, 2025, and read by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas during Tuesday’s plenary, Tinubu outlined four key reasons for rejecting the bill.

One major concern was Section 22, which erroneously granted state governors the authority to approve the disposal of university land, a power that should rest with the President, given the institution’s federal status.

Additionally, the President pointed out several typographical mistakes, including the misspelling of “statutes” as “statues,” the omission of the preposition “of” in a critical clause, and the incorrect spelling of “one-third” as “on-third.”

“In line with Section 58(4) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), I hereby notify the House of Representatives of my decision, taken on December 23, 2024, to withhold assent to the Federal University of Education, Numan (Establishment) Bill, 2024,” Tinubu stated.

He urged lawmakers to correct the identified errors to ensure the bill meets legal and linguistic standards before reconsideration.
