Gunmen Dare Soludo, Kidnap One Person Just 24 Hours After Launch Of Security Outfit

Kidnappers in Anambra State have shown defiance toward Governor Chukwuma Soludo by abducting a person just a day after the launch of the state’s new security initiative, ‘Operation Udo ga achi.’

The victim was taken from Aku village in the Ezinifitte community, located in the Aguata local government area.

According to the victim’s cousin, the abduction took place around 11 pm on Sunday, with the kidnappers driving the victim around in his own vehicle while negotiating a ransom.

Fortunately, the victim was released the following morning by 7 am, but not before suffering significant financial loss.

The cousin revealed that the victim’s bank account had been drained via a POS transaction linked to a MoniePoint account.

“Thankfully, he was released this morning, but it came at a heavy price. His account was emptied through a POS transaction,” the cousin said.

“I am truly grateful for all the prayers, messages, and offers of support during this trying time.”

While the exact ransom amount has not been disclosed, the victim’s cousin called for any tips on recovering funds lost in such situations.

As at the time of this report, the state police command has not issued a statement regarding the incident.

Wike Speaks Without Decorum; I Won’t Dignify Him With Response – PDP BoT Chair, Wabara

Senator Adolphus Wabara, the former Senate President and Chairman of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has stated that he will not respond to the derogatory comments made by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, about him.

Wike, in a national television interview over the weekend, criticized Wabara’s leadership of the PDP, saying that if Wabara were his father, he would have disowned him.

Wike remarked, “If he were my father or related to me, I would have disowned him. He doesn’t qualify to be. No wonder President Obasanjo made a presidential broadcast under his tenure about corruption. That’s the man leading the PDP BoT.”

In response to Wike’s remarks, Senator Wabara, speaking as an elder statesman, emphasized that it would be beneath his dignity to engage in a public war of words with the FCT Minister.

While expressing disappointment over Wike’s comments, Wabara suggested that as a government official and former governor, Wike should exercise more restraint in his speech.

“As a Minister of the Federal Republic and a former Governor, he should show more respect for the position he holds,” Wabara said.

“It is disgraceful for someone of his stature to speak without decorum.”

Wabara also condemned the minister’s words as immature, comparing them to “gibberish like a broken water pipe without a tap.”

He expressed that a man in Wike’s position should be more thoughtful and factual in his statements.

The former Senate President distanced himself from any allegations of corruption, asserting, “I am not corrupt. I, Adolphus Wabara, am not corrupt.”

He also challenged Wike to clarify what wrong he had done to him if he was truly deserving of such harsh words.

“I won’t dignify him by joining issues with him,” Wabara added. “For a son to disown his father, the father must have done something terribly wrong. I leave it for Wike to explain what it is that I did to him.”

Wabara reaffirmed his commitment to upholding respect for elders and refraining from engaging in unproductive exchanges.

We Will Send Millions Back To Their Home Countries – Trump Pledges Mass Deportations, Border Security

In his first speech after being sworn in for a second, non-consecutive term, President Donald Trump promised a comprehensive crackdown on illegal immigration, vowing to send “millions and millions of criminal aliens” back to their home countries.

During his inauguration ceremony on Monday, Trump outlined a series of executive orders aimed at tackling what he described as the growing threat of illegal immigration.

He emphasized that his administration would take immediate action to halt illegal entries at the U.S.-Mexico border.

“Today, I will sign a set of historic executive orders,” Trump declared.

“These measures will mark the beginning of the full restoration of America and usher in a new era of common sense and lawfulness.”

Trump announced plans to declare a national emergency at the southern border to ensure that illegal immigration comes to a halt.

“All illegal entry will be stopped immediately, and we will begin the process of returning millions of criminal aliens to their countries of origin,” he said.

Additionally, the president reaffirmed his commitment to reinstating the controversial “Remain in Mexico” policy, under which asylum seekers would be required to stay in Mexico while awaiting their immigration court hearings in the U.S.

NUJ Condemns DSS Attack On Journalists Covering Edo Governorship Tribunal

The Edo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has strongly condemned the assault on journalists by officials of the Department of State Services (DSS) at the Edo State Election Petition Tribunal on Monday, January 20, 2025.

In a statement issued by the council’s chairman, Festus Alenkhe, and secretary, Andy Egbon, the union expressed outrage at the attempt to obstruct journalists from carrying out their constitutional responsibilities.

They described the incident as a direct attack on press freedom and citizens’ rights to information and free expression.

The statement read, “The Nigeria Union of Journalists, Edo State Council, unequivocally condemns the unwarranted attack on journalists by DSS officials at the Edo State Election Petition Tribunal on Monday, January 20, 2025.”

The NUJ highlighted that such actions are not only unjustifiable but also reflect the increasing hostility towards the media in Nigeria.

In response, the union called on both the Director-General of the DSS and the State Director of the DSS to take immediate corrective actions against the operatives involved and to prevent similar incidents in the future.

“We stand in solidarity with our colleagues who were subjected to harassment and intimidation by DSS officials. We demand an immediate, unreserved apology from the DSS, along with a guarantee that journalists will be allowed to carry out their work freely. Failure to address this issue may lead the union to take further action, including boycotting DSS-related activities in Edo State,” the statement continued.

The NUJ reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for press freedom and the protection of journalists’ rights.

They also called on all relevant stakeholders to join them in condemning the attack, emphasizing that such actions undermine democracy and the principles of a free press.

Avoid Confrontation With Trump For Your Own Good – Akinyemi Advises Tinubu

Renowned political scientist Professor Bolaji Akinyemi has urged President Bola Tinubu to be cautious in his dealings with the newly inaugurated 47th President of the United States, Donald Trump.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday, Akinyemi warned that engaging in a confrontation with Trump could prove unwise.

“If I were President Tinubu, I would avoid antagonizing Trump,” Akinyemi stated.

“There is nothing a bully enjoys more than taking on those who are not strong enough to resist him,” he added, stressing that sometimes it is better to avoid direct confrontation, even if it means enduring actions that may be contrary to Nigeria’s interests.

Akinyemi, a former Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA), further referenced an African proverb, noting that confronting a bully without the strength to back it up can lead to unnecessary suffering.

He advised Tinubu to find ways to address any issues with Trump without engaging in a head-on confrontation.

Commenting on Trump’s inaugural speech, Akinyemi expressed disappointment, calling it “uninspiring,” “shocking,” and “depressing.”

Instead of uniting the world, Trump’s address focused on asserting aggressive policies, including controversial stances like reclaiming the Panama Canal and renaming the Gulf of Mexico.

Akinyemi warned that Trump would soon face the consequences of his “jingoistic” policies, predicting a tumultuous four years ahead.

Akinyemi, who also served as Nigeria’s former Minister of External Affairs, stated that Nigeria would likely not be a priority under Trump’s administration.

He urged that Nigeria should not expect any extraordinary changes in relations with the U.S. during Trump’s second term.

Trump was sworn in on Monday, marking his return to the presidency after losing his re-election bid in 2020.

At his inauguration, he was surrounded by a group of powerful figures, including billionaires like Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, and Mark Zuckerberg.

In contrast to his previous refusal to attend Joe Biden’s 2021 inauguration, former presidents Barack Obama, George W. Bush, and Bill Clinton were present at this event, signaling a return to traditional norms, despite the absence of Michelle Obama, who chose not to attend.

FG Approves 50% Hike In Telecom Tariffs

On Monday, the Federal Government approved a 50% increase in telecom service tariffs, marking the first price hike in 12 years.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) announced the decision in a statement signed by its Director of Public Affairs, Reuben Muoka.

This tariff increase follows years of requests from telecom operators for a revision of the existing tariffs.

The operators have cited several challenges, including the devaluation of the naira, foreign exchange instability, vandalism, theft, insecurity, and other economic factors that have affected their operations and expansion plans.

The NCC, exercising its authority under Section 108 of the Nigerian Communications Act (NCA) of 2003, stated that it had approved the tariff adjustment to reflect prevailing market conditions.

The new tariffs will be capped at a maximum of 50% of the current rates, which is lower than the more than 100% increase that some telecom operators had initially sought.

The decision was made after considering the ongoing reforms in the telecom industry, which are expected to enhance the sector’s sustainability.

The adjustments will remain within the tariff bands set by the NCC’s 2013 Cost Study and will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis, in line with the Commission’s standard practices for tariff changes.

The implementation will also adhere to the newly issued NCC Guidance on Tariff Simplification, 2024.

The NCC noted that telecom tariffs have remained unchanged since 2013, despite rising operational costs.

The approved adjustment aims to bridge the gap between these increasing costs and the existing tariffs, while ensuring that telecom services to consumers are not disrupted.

The revised tariffs are expected to support the telecom operators’ ability to invest in infrastructure and innovation, which will ultimately lead to improved service delivery, better network quality, and wider coverage for consumers.

Sanwo-Olu Holds Meeting With New Lagos Speaker, Assembly Principal Officers

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, met with the newly elected Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, on Monday, one week after her election.

Meranda, representing Apapa Constituency 1, made history as the first female Speaker, following the impeachment of Mudashiru Obasa last Monday.

Obasa’s impeachment was based on allegations of gross misconduct, poor leadership, abuse of office, misappropriation of funds, and lack of transparency.

Meranda assumed leadership shortly thereafter and appointed new principal officers on Friday.

On Monday, Governor Sanwo-Olu welcomed Speaker Meranda and her team of principal officers for a courtesy visit at his office in Alausa, Ikeja.

The visit took place just before the weekly State Executive Council meeting.

A post from the Governor’s New Media Aide, Jubril A. Gawat, on X (formerly Twitter), stated that the Governor, along with his Deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, escorted the Speaker and her delegation to the Council Chamber.

During the visit, both the Speaker and the executive council members expressed their commitment to fostering a harmonious working relationship between the executive and legislative branches of Lagos State Government.

The principal officers accompanying Speaker Meranda included: Deputy Speaker Hon. Mojeed Fatai, Majority Leader Hon. Temitope Adedeji, Deputy Majority Leader Hon. Richard Kasunmu, Chief Whip Hon. Sanni Babatunde, and Deputy Chief Whip Hon. David Setonji.

Governor Sanwo-Olu has previously denied any involvement in the removal of Obasa.

His spokesperson, Gboyega Akosile, emphasized that the Governor respects the separation of powers and refrains from interfering in legislative matters, calling the impeachment a purely internal decision of the House.

Billions Of Dollars Needed To Rebuild Gaza After Devastating Conflict – UN

The United Nations warned on Monday that it would require billions of dollars to rebuild Gaza after the 15-month-long war between Israel and Hamas.

A ceasefire between the two sides took effect on Sunday, bringing an end to the devastating conflict that has ravaged the Gaza Strip and further fueled tensions across the Middle East.

According to Israeli sources, the Hamas attacks on Israel led to 1,200 fatalities, while Israel’s retaliatory strikes have resulted in over 46,000 deaths in Gaza, according to the territory’s health ministry.

The UN’s damage assessment, released this month, highlighted the monumental task of clearing the debris left by Israel’s bombardment, with over 50 million tonnes of rubble estimated to take 21 years to clear at a cost of up to 1.2 billion dollars.

The debris is feared to be contaminated with asbestos, and some refugee camps affected by the conflict are known to have been constructed using this material.

Additionally, the rubble likely contains human remains, with the Palestinian Ministry of Health estimating that 10,000 bodies are still trapped under the debris.

The UN Development Programme stated on Sunday that Gaza’s development had been set back by 69 years due to the war.

A UN report from 2024 projected that the rebuilding of Gaza’s homes would take at least until 2040, with the process potentially extending for many decades.

According to UN satellite data (UNOSAT), approximately two-thirds of Gaza’s buildings, over 170,000 structures, have been damaged or destroyed.

This includes 245,123 housing units, leaving over 1.8 million people in need of emergency shelter.

The damage to infrastructure has been estimated at 18.5 billion dollars by the end of January 2024, affecting essential services such as healthcare, education, and energy.

The UN humanitarian office also reported that less than 25% of Gaza’s pre-war water supply is currently operational, and nearly 70% of the road network has been damaged.

Furthermore, more than half of Gaza’s agricultural land has been destroyed by the ongoing conflict, leading to widespread hunger.

The UN Food and Agriculture Organization reported in 2024 that over 95% of Gaza’s cattle and nearly half of the sheep have died or been slaughtered due to the war.

The conflict has also led to the destruction of over 200 government buildings, 136 schools, 823 mosques, and three churches.

While some hospitals have been damaged, only 17 out of 36 medical units were partially functional as of January 2024.

Amnesty International’s Crisis Evidence Lab documented extensive destruction along Gaza’s eastern border, where over 90% of buildings, including 3,500 structures, were either destroyed or severely damaged as of May 2024.

Otudeko, Onasanya, Others Not Properly Served – Court Rejects EFCC’s Request For Arrest Warrant, Condemns Media Trial

The Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, presided over by Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke, has rejected the request by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to issue an arrest warrant against Dr. Oba Otudeko, Dr. Bisi Onasanya, and other individuals involved in a high-profile case.

The decision was based on the failure to properly serve the defendants with charges.

The court did, however, grant an application for substituted service, allowing the EFCC to use alternative means to notify the accused.

The case has been adjourned to February 13th for further proceedings.

During the court session, Bode Olanipekun, representing Dr. Otudeko, sought an order to prevent the misuse of media in relation to the case, highlighting the negative impact of sensationalized reporting.

The judge took this opportunity to caution all parties involved to refrain from publicizing the matter irresponsibly, urging journalists to ensure accurate coverage of court activities.

The case has sparked controversy, with many criticizing the EFCC for violating procedural norms by publicly announcing charges without formally notifying the accused.

Legal experts have pointed out that this move undermines the presumption of innocence guaranteed by the Nigerian Constitution and goes against established rules governing criminal proceedings.

A legal professional, speaking anonymously, remarked: “The EFCC’s actions contravene Section 36(5) of the Constitution, which ensures that individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty. Moreover, they’ve disregarded the Federal High Court’s procedural rules, which mandate that charges must be served before being made public.”

The incident has been described as an example of “trial by media,” raising concerns about the fairness of the case and the potential for public prejudice against the accused.

Some observers have noted that the revival of this 12-year-old investigation coincides with ongoing disputes over governance and control of FBN Holdings, fueling speculation that the EFCC’s actions could be politically motivated, aimed at influencing the outcome of the corporate battle.

Critics argue that the move might also damage the reputations of those involved, especially Dr. Otudeko, who served as a non-executive director at First Bank before stepping down four years ago.

Dr. Otudeko has vehemently denied the allegations made against him by the EFCC, emphasizing that he is confident the truth will eventually come to light.

He stated that he looks forward to clearing his name in the appropriate legal forum. Dr. Onasanya, who also faces charges, similarly defended his record, stating that his decades-long career built on integrity would not be overshadowed by false claims.

The case has now been rescheduled for February 13th, as both the legal and public scrutiny continues to unfold.

Just In: Donald Trump Sworn-In As 47th US President

Donald Trump has officially been sworn in as the 47th President of the United States, making a rare political comeback four years after his defeat to Joe Biden.

The 78-year-old former president vowed to take immediate action on key issues such as immigration and cultural policies as part of his return to power.

Trump’s inauguration on Monday marked a stark contrast to his 2017 ceremony, with the billionaire now surrounded by powerful figures from America’s elite, including tech moguls like Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos, and Sundar Pichai, who all attended the event.

Musk, a significant financial backer of Trump’s campaign, has also been tasked with leading efforts to reduce government spending in the new administration.

In a departure from tradition, President Biden attended the inauguration alongside other former presidents, including Barack Obama, George W. Bush, and Bill Clinton, while some former first ladies also made an appearance. However, Michelle Obama notably skipped the ceremony.

Notably, foreign leaders were also present for Trump’s second term, including Argentina’s far-right president Javier Milei and Italy’s right-wing Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

Due to cold weather, the inauguration was moved indoors for the first time since Ronald Reagan’s 1985 ceremony, limiting the traditional outdoor crowds on the National Mall.

Behind the spectacle, Trump wasted no time in beginning his right-wing, nationalist agenda.

He announced plans for over 100 executive orders aimed at reversing much of President Biden’s policies.

Among his first actions, Trump is set to declare a national emergency at the Mexico border, increase military involvement in border security, and end birthright citizenship.

He also plans to target undocumented immigration with immediate deportations.

Trump is also expected to sign an order recognizing only two biological sexes and work to dismantle federal diversity programs as part of his first days in office.
