How Wike Facilitated Bala Mohammed’s Governorship Bid – Dogara

Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Yakubu Dogara, has accused Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, of turning against the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, despite the latter’s role in his political ascension.

In a detailed letter titled “Gov Bala vs Wike: Let the Truth Be Told,” Dogara revealed how Wike played a pivotal role in ensuring Bala’s emergence as the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in 2019 and went on to finance his campaign.

Dogara stated, “As I witness this gross injustice, the questions I ask myself are: is my comfort more important than saying the truth, and is my fear of conflict worth allowing harm to go unchallenged? I have learned enough over the years to know beyond reasonable doubt that in the face of situations like this, if I choose to prioritize my comfort, I will fail the victim and fail myself. This is because injustice itself is a festering wound; it only grows worse when brushed aside.”

According to Dogara, Wike’s intervention was instrumental during the 2018 PDP gubernatorial primaries in Bauchi. He recounted:

“For starters, need I remind Governor Bala Mohammed that in 2018 PDP gubernatorial primaries, when we were not too sure he would win because his then major opponent, Senator Abdul Ningi, was the one who constituted the state party structure and had a bosom friend as party chairman, it was Wike we turned to for help. I had called Wike to plead with him to help us in Bauchi without necessarily disclosing to him that it was Bala Mohammed that we wanted delivered.

“His response to me was, ‘Are you sure you are in control of the process 100 percent?’ I said I wasn’t too sure, and he said to me, ‘Leave it to me; I will help you sort it out.’”

Dogara detailed how Wike appointed Chief Dan Orbih as the chairman of the primaries panel to secure the ticket for Bala Mohammed, even providing a private jet to transport him to Bauchi.

“On the eve of the primaries, Chief Dan was in Benin City, and we needed to get him to Bauchi for the assignment. It was to Wike that I turned again, and his response to me was, ‘My brother, I have told you not to bother. Tell Chief Dan to come to meet me in Port Harcourt.’ I did just that, and amazingly, Wike provided the private jet that flew Chief Dan to Bauchi and out of Bauchi for the assignment.”

Dogara revealed Wike bore all expenses for the primaries without placing any conditions. However, after Bala Mohammed emerged as the PDP flagbearer, it became apparent that he lacked the resources to fund his campaign.

“After the emergence of Bala Mohammed as the party flag bearer and having promised to sponsor all the party candidates if he got the ticket, we were rudely awakened to the reality that Bala Mohammed had no money for his own campaigns, let alone for other candidates of the party. Initially, I thought it was some kind of a funny joke, but as time went, I realized to my utter bewilderment that it was true,” Dogara added.

He recounted their unsuccessful fundraiser, which yielded only N28 million net, forcing them to approach Wike for assistance once again.

Dogara said, “We got tickets and flew to Port Harcourt with Bala Mohammed without informing Wike that we were coming with him. On arrival, we were ushered into the Government House and asked to take our seats and wait for the Governor. As soon as Wike walked down the stairs and saw Bala Mohammed, his visage changed, and I noticed he was cold to me for the very first time.”

According to Dogara, Wike expressed reservations about Bala Mohammed, recalling past grievances.

“He said to me, ‘Let me tell you what you don’t know. When we were ministers, Bala Mohammed allocated plots of land to all ministers except me. He also humiliated me when I went to see him in his office as a colleague minister, just to get approval to increase the number of floors on a building I had in Abuja—not to beg for a plot, which he refused to allocate to me. He kept me in his waiting room for hours and later sneaked out of the office. From that day, I made up my mind never to have anything to do with him again.’”

Despite this, Wike eventually forgave Bala Mohammed and provided the necessary financial support, albeit with a warning: “I assure you, you will regret your decision if Bala Mohammed becomes governor.”

Dogara concluded, “The two senators with me that day can confirm this to anyone who wants to establish the veracity of these narratives.”

Another Tanker Explosion Rocks Niger State

A fuel-laden tanker exploded on Tuesday evening in Kusogbogi, a boundary area between Agaie and Lapai Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Niger State.

According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred around 6 pm when the tanker fell and caught fire while attempting to overtake another truck.

Fortunately, no lives were lost in the explosion.

Mallam Mahmud Abubakar, a resident of Lapai, confirmed the incident, attributing it to overspeeding and loss of control.

He also revealed that a similar explosion occurred at the same spot last week when a tanker collided with a stationary truck, leading to both vehicles being engulfed in flames.

This latest incident follows a more tragic fuel tanker explosion over a week ago in Dikko, Gurara LGA, where at least 98 people lost their lives and several others sustained severe injuries.

The explosion happened when residents gathered to collect spilled fuel, which ignited, causing a massive fire.

In the aftermath of the Dikko explosion, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu directed the transfer of 20 victims to Gwagwalada Specialist Hospital for advanced medical treatment.

“I’m Now Known As The Man Who Makes Things Disappear” – APGA Rep Member, Ikwechegh

House of Representatives member Alex Ikwechegh has humorously embraced the nickname “the man who makes things disappear,” which arose from a widely publicized confrontation with a Bolt driver in Abuja in October 2024.

Speaking as a guest on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Tuesday, the lawmaker, who represents Aba North and South Federal Constituency under the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), reflected on the incident, describing it as a learning experience.

“What happened was quite unfortunate, but I take it as an opportunity to build a relationship with the young man involved,” Ikwechegh said.

“Today, we are friends. The matter went to court, but it was struck out for lack of merit.”

Acknowledging the public attention the event brought him, he added, “The whole world now knows me as the man who makes things disappear. But that video doesn’t define who I am. I’ve been in public service for years without any scandal. This was a low moment, but it’s in the past now.”

Last October, Ikwechegh faced widespread backlash when a video surfaced online showing him assaulting a Bolt driver, Stephen Abuwatseya, over a disagreement about the delivery of snails ordered by the lawmaker.

In the video, Ikwechegh was seen slapping the driver and issuing threats, saying, “Can you imagine this rat? I can make this man disappear in the whole of Nigeria, and nothing will happen.”

The confrontation reportedly began when the Bolt driver arrived at the lawmaker’s residence and requested payment.

Ikwechegh accused the driver of disrespect for not stepping out of the car to deliver the goods.

The video sparked outrage among Nigerians, with many calling for justice.

The lawmaker was arrested, and the police arraigned him in court.

However, Ikwechegh later apologized to both the Inspector General of Police and the driver.

The matter was resolved out of court, with Ikwechegh compensating the victim.

He also revealed that he had since developed a friendship with the driver and even established connections with his pastor and bishop.

Reflecting on the incident, Ikwechegh said, “The part of the video everyone saw was a low moment for me, but it doesn’t capture the full story. Actions preempt reactions. However, I’ve learned from it, and we’ve all moved on.”

Court Bars Police From Arresting Kano Anti-Graft Agency Chair

The Kano State High Court has issued a restraining order preventing the Nigeria Police Force from arresting, inviting, harassing, or detaining Muhuyi Magaji Rimingado, the Chairman of the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission (PCACC).

The ruling followed an ex parte motion brought before the court by the plaintiffs: the Attorney General of Kano State, the PCACC, and Rimingado.

The defendants in the case include the Nigeria Police Force, the Inspector General of Police, the Assistant Inspector General of Police for Zone 1 Kano, the Commissioner of Police in Kano State, ASP Ahmed M. Bello, and Bala Muhammad Inuwa.

Justice Sunusi Ado Ma’aji granted the order on Monday after reviewing the motion ex parte alongside a six-paragraph affidavit sworn by Abubakar Muhammad, a litigation secretary at the law firm of Messrs. A. K. Maude and Co., dated January 27, 2025.

The judge also considered the written address submitted by the applicants’ counsel.

The case has been adjourned to February 2, 2025, for the hearing of the motion on notice.

Rimingado was arrested on Friday evening by police operatives and detained at Zone 1 Police Headquarters in Kano, where he was interrogated for several hours.

He was later released on conditional bail around 11 pm the same day but was instructed to report to the police headquarters in Abuja on Monday for further questioning.

The restraining order now prohibits any further police action against Rimingado until the court hears the substantive motion.

Hamas Berates Trump, Rejects His Palestinian Relocation Proposal

Hamas has rejected a proposal by former U.S. President Donald Trump to relocate Palestinians from the Gaza Strip to Egypt and Jordan.

In a statement issued on Monday, the group denounced the plan as an “aggressive scheme” designed to displace Palestinians and erode their national identity.

Hamas emphasized that Palestinians, who have endured decades of displacement and violence, especially in northern Gaza, remain resolute in their attachment to their homeland and historical rights.

“The Palestinian people will not accept any plan that seeks to uproot or displace them,” the statement read.

Hamas also criticized the U.S. government for supporting Israeli policies that they say violate Palestinian rights.

The group urged Arab and Islamic nations, particularly Egypt and Jordan, to strongly oppose the relocation plan and bolster support for the Palestinian cause.

“They should assist in rebuilding Gaza and strengthen the Palestinian presence on their land,” Hamas added, calling for solidarity and resilience against displacement efforts.

Power Won’t Change Me – Rivers Governor, Fubara

Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has vowed to remain humble and steadfast despite the privileges of his high office, assuring that power will not alter his principles or values.

Fubara made this declaration on Tuesday while receiving leaders, elders, and key stakeholders who visited him at the Government House in Port Harcourt to celebrate his 50th birthday.

The governor emphasized his dedication to fulfilling the promises he made to the people of Rivers State, focusing on transformational projects that would benefit the state.

In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Nelson Chukwudi, Fubara said, “I want to say that I will still be the Fubara that you know; power will not change me. I will continue to hold dear my belief in God and my respect for people.”

“Power will come, power will go, but I will remain the same. With your support, we will achieve the Rivers State of our dreams. Even if we don’t complete everything, we will lay a strong foundation that will guide us toward that vision.”

The governor, who expressed gratitude for the outpouring of love on his milestone birthday, added, “This morning is not for politics but for joy. I am grateful to celebrate my Golden Jubilee. It means I have joined the league of the old men.”

Former Rivers State Governor, Sir Celestine Omehia, praised Fubara for his leadership, describing him as a deliverer of the state and its people from forces that sought to undermine Rivers’ progress.

Similarly, former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Prince Uche Secondus, urged all stakeholders to support the governor, noting, “Once a king is crowned, the kingmaker must step aside to allow the king to lead effectively.”

The Ayo Adebanjo-led faction of Afenifere, the Yoruba socio-political group, has appointed lawyer and activist Dele Farotimi as its National Organising Secretary.

The decision was made during a general meeting held on Tuesday at Pa Adebanjo’s residence in Isanya Ogbo, Ogun State.

Kano Drops Criminal Charges Against #EndBadGovernance Protesters

Kano State’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Haruna Isa Dederi, has ordered the withdrawal of all criminal charges against individuals involved in the #EndBadGovernance protests that took place in the state.

The decision, which was formalized on January 27, 2025, came after the Citizens’ Gavel Civil Society Organisation (CSO) petitioned the Attorney General’s office on November 5, 2024, urging him to invoke his constitutional powers under Section 211(1)(c) of the 1999 Constitution.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Communications Associate of Citizens’ Gavel, Rachael Adio, confirmed that the withdrawal of charges was a significant step toward justice.

The petition filed by Citizens’ Gavel sought the dismissal of criminal charges against protesters arrested during the nationwide #EndBadGovernance demonstrations held between August 1 and 10, 2024.

Protesters had faced various charges, including conspiracy to commit treason, unlawful assembly, and public disturbance.

Citizens’ Gavel had previously filed fundamental human rights enforcement applications in court and provided free legal aid to the detained protesters.

This move, they said, marked a pivotal moment for human rights in the country.

“Five months later, the withdrawal of these charges represents a hard-fought victory for justice, underscoring citizens’ rights to peacefully protest without fear of retaliation,” Citizens’ Gavel stated.

The CSO praised the Attorney General for upholding the rule of law and respecting Nigerians’ constitutional freedoms.

They reaffirmed their commitment to advocating for civil liberties, justice, and accountability within the legal system, emphasizing that a Nigeria where peaceful protest is protected is possible.

Edo Gov’ship: PDP Witnesses Absent As Tribunal Resumes In Abuja

The Edo State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal resumed in Abuja on Tuesday, with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) facing criticism over its failure to present witnesses for the ongoing proceedings.

The three-member tribunal, led by Justice Wilfred Kpochi, expressed frustration at the PDP’s inability to make full use of the judicial time allocated to the case.

Only one witness, who had previously testified in Edo State, was available to give evidence.

Justice Kpochi remarked, “What you are telling us is unacceptable. Why did we ask the other petitioners to reschedule their hearings if there were no witnesses ready to testify today?”

Adetunji Oyeyipo (SAN), counsel for the PDP, explained that logistical challenges had delayed the arrival of witnesses from Edo State to Abuja.

He assured the tribunal that the witnesses would be prepared to testify on the next scheduled date.

“We undertake to bring as many witnesses as may be convenient for the tribunal on the next date,” Oyeyipo said.

He further explained that some of the witnesses were still recovering from travel disruptions and were not in the right frame of mind to testify.

One witness, Mr. Oseyili Anenih, the PDP’s Director of Research and Strategy, testified that the party and its candidate, Asue Ighodalo, were challenging results from 765 polling units out of 4,519 in the state.

However, under cross-examination by Dr. Onyechi Ikpeazu (SAN), counsel for Governor Monday Okpebholo, Anenih admitted that he did not have access to physical copies of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) machines used during the election.

Instead, he relied on screenshots of the data, which were tendered as evidence.

The PDP and its candidate, who contested the September 21, 2024 governorship election, are challenging the victory of Governor Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC), alleging irregularities in the process.

The tribunal adjourned the hearing to Thursday to allow the PDP to present its remaining witnesses and continue its case.

Investigate Ondo’s ‘Budget Of Looting’ – PDP Tells EFCC

The Ondo State chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to conduct a thorough investigation into the alleged inflated overhead costs in the 2025 state budget, describing the document as a “budget of looting.”

In a statement issued by PDP spokesperson Kennedy Peretei, the party expressed concern over the allocation of a massive N11.5 billion security vote to the Ministry of Finance.

The PDP questioned the rationale behind this allocation, pointing out that it is incomprehensible for a security vote to be designated to a ministry rather than the office of the governor, which traditionally receives the security vote.

Peretei further criticized the budget for its extravagant allocations, such as N200 million for the maintenance of vehicles for lawmakers and N280 million for the Speaker of the Ondo State Assembly’s phone expenses.

Meanwhile, vital sectors like education and healthcare were not sufficiently funded, receiving only N77.024 billion and N46.016 billion, respectively.

The PDP condemned these allocations, alleging that they were designed to enrich public officials at the expense of the people, while the state’s crucial sectors languish.

The party argued that such financial mismanagement undermines any potential progress and development in Ondo State.

“The 2025 Appropriation Act, signed by Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has nothing to do with recovery but everything to do with looting the state treasury. The allocations are brazen, and it’s clear that the funds are being siphoned for personal gain,” the statement read.

The PDP called on the EFCC to conduct a thorough investigation into these alleged misappropriations, stating that the people’s trust had been violated by officials entrusted with public funds.

It emphasized that no state can progress when its leaders engage in such reckless financial practices.
