Just In: Afe Babalola Drops Defamation Charges Against Dele Farotimi

Aare Afe Babalola, the founder and chancellor of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD), has decided to drop all criminal charges against human rights lawyer, Dele Farotimi, following the intervention of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi.

Babalola made the announcement on Sunday, acknowledging the intervention of the Ooni and other influential traditional rulers in Nigeria.

Farotimi, who had written the book “Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System,” accused Babalola of corrupting the judiciary.

In response, Babalola emphasized his respect for the Yoruba traditional institutions and their authority, stating that the commands of the Obas are long-standing and must be followed.

During a press conference, Babalola expressed his deep frustration over the accusations, recalling his past efforts in rejecting an oil block and defending the EFCC law, as well as turning down ministerial nominations twice.

He questioned why anyone would seek to undermine his life’s work.

He also made it clear that he held no personal gain in Farotimi’s imprisonment, and he was always content when able to give to others.

The Ooni had earlier appealed to Babalola to consider the influence of the traditional rulers involved and to make peace.

The monarch praised Babalola’s significant contributions to the development of the Yoruba people, Nigeria, and the world.

“We all came together to speak with him, and he gave due respect to the Obas, ultimately agreeing to the resolution,” said the Ooni.

“We, the Obas, can attest to Aare Babalola’s hard work and how he built his reputation, one that cannot be tarnished or destroyed by anyone. He has shown the world how much he values his name.”

The Ooni added, “Dele Farotimi is your son, and as elders, we forgive our children after a reprimand.”

While Babalola’s decision to drop the charges was confirmed, some of the lawyers named in Farotimi’s book, including those who were allegedly defamed, have indicated they may continue their legal actions.

These lawyers plan to meet later to discuss the next steps and issue a joint statement regarding their future course of action.

The Body of Benchers, led by Chief Adegboyega Awomolo, has confirmed 15 distinguished legal professionals, including Senate Leader Senator Opeyemi Bamidele and renowned human rights lawyer Chief Mike Ozekhome, as life members of the prestigious body.

The confirmation was announced on Thursday, January 23, 2025, during a meeting held at the Body of Benchers’ headquarters in Abuja.

In addition to Bamidele and Ozekhome, other legal luminaries confirmed as life benchers include Prof. Isa Chiroma, the Director General of the Nigerian Law School; Justice Sidi Bage, Emir of Lafia; retired Supreme Court Justice Ejembi Eko; and Professor Joy Ngozi Ezeilo, former United Nations Special Rapporteur on Trafficking in Persons in Africa.

This brings the total number of life benchers in Nigeria to 170, with a cap on new admissions for the next five years.

The prestigious elevation of these legal professionals is a recognition of their immense contributions to the legal profession and their unwavering commitment to the integrity and excellence of the judiciary in Nigeria.

The Body of Benchers, as the highest regulatory body of legal practitioners in the country, bestows life membership as a mark of distinction for outstanding service to the legal field.

Senator Bamidele, who was first appointed to the Body of Benchers as a Bencher in November 2019, is also known for his significant impact as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, and Legal Matters. Under his leadership, the committee initiated several reforms that enhanced the judiciary’s welfare and operational capacity.

His tenure saw improvements in the working conditions of judicial officers through increased funding, as well as the passage of a bill raising the retirement age for judicial officers from 65 to 70, which was later assented to by the executive.

A statement from the Senate Leader’s office further highlighted Bamidele’s extensive qualifications and service record. Bamidele, called to the Nigerian Bar in 1992, is a member of several prestigious legal associations, including the Nigerian Bar Association, American Bar Association, New York State Bar Association, and International Bar Association.

He is also a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (Nigeria) and the Chartered Institute of Management Consultants, among other professional organizations.

Bamidele has served in various public service roles, including as Commissioner for Youth, Sports, and Social Development under Governor Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and as Commissioner for Information & Strategy under Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola.

His experience in the legislative sector includes serving as the Chairman of the House Committee on Legislative Research and Budget in the seventh National Assembly.

Bamidele’s academic background is equally distinguished, having earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) in 1986, followed by a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Benin in 1990.

He later completed a Master of Laws degree at the Franklin Pierce School of Law, University of New Hampshire, specializing in Intellectual Property Law, including International Patent, Trademark, and Copyright Law.

Trump Imposes Sanctions On Colombia Over Deportation Dispute

US President Donald Trump has imposed significant tariffs and sanctions on Colombia in response to the country’s refusal to accept deportation flights for its nationals.

Trump, who re-entered office less than a week ago, announced a 25% tariff on Colombian goods, which would increase to 50% within a week.

His decision comes as part of his broader push to crack down on immigration and confront growing resistance in Latin America.

Trump also declared that he would revoke visas for Colombian government officials and supporters of President Gustavo Petro.

He added that Colombians would face heightened scrutiny at US airports. “These measures are just the beginning,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

“We will not allow the Colombian Government to violate its legal obligations regarding the acceptance and return of criminals they forced into the United States.”

The dispute arises from Colombia’s refusal to allow US planes carrying deported Colombian migrants to land.

President Petro, elected in 2022 as the first left-wing leader of Latin America’s fourth-largest economy, has resisted Trump’s deportation policies.

Petro posted on X that “The United States cannot treat Colombian migrants as criminals” and vowed to block the entry of US planes carrying deported citizens.

In a follow-up post, he mentioned that US military planes were turned back, which Trump confirmed as two US planes were denied entry.

In response to the situation, Colombia offered to send its own presidential plane to the United States to transport deported migrants “with dignity” but stated that it would allow civilian US flights only if the migrants were treated humanely.

Petro further explained that over 15,600 undocumented US nationals currently reside in Colombia, and while he encouraged them to “regularize their situation,” he ruled out deportation raids.

This diplomatic standoff comes ahead of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s visit to Latin America, which notably excludes Colombia.

The tensions reflect broader challenges for Trump’s administration, as it faces pushback from left-wing governments in Latin America, including Brazil.

Brazil recently condemned the treatment of Brazilian deportees who were shackled during their flights back to their country, calling it a “flagrant disregard” for their human rights.

One of the deportees, Edgar Da Silva Moura, shared his experience, describing the inhumane conditions on the flight, including being shackled with hands and feet tied and denied basic needs like water and bathroom access.

The treatment of Brazilian migrants has sparked outrage, and similar reports have surfaced about the use of military aircraft for deportations under Trump’s administration.

While Trump’s policies are aimed at deterring illegal immigration, countries in Latin America have expressed a willingness to support their returning nationals.

Mexico has announced plans to provide shelters and humanitarian aid for deported migrants, while Honduras has launched a program offering support for its returnees.

Heat Up The Polity, Meet Your Waterloo – Lagos Assembly Members Warn Obasa

Members of the Lagos State House of Assembly have issued a stern warning to Mudashiru Obasa, advising him not to exacerbate the political climate following his removal as Speaker.

Obasa, representing Agege Constituency 1, was impeached on January 13 amid allegations of gross misconduct and financial mismanagement.

In the wake of his impeachment, Mojisola Meranda, his former deputy, was swiftly sworn in as the new Speaker by the Assembly members.

Reacting to his ousting, Obasa held a press conference in Lagos on Saturday, describing his impeachment as “unconditional,” a statement that was swiftly condemned by his colleagues.

A statement signed by Ogundipe Stephen Olukayode, a member of the Assembly, referred to Obasa’s remarks as “uncalled for and unparliamentary,” emphasizing that the members had every right to remove their principal officers under the relevant statutory orders.

The Assembly members also appealed to Obasa to embrace peace and harmony, urging him to follow the example set by others.

They cautioned that any attempt to further agitate the political landscape would be met with strong resistance from the majority of lawmakers who had united in electing Rt Hon Meranda as the new Speaker.

“Peace is our goal in Lagos, and peace is what we will achieve,” the statement concluded.

Former Minister, Supporters Dump APC, Form New Political Group

Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, the former Minister of Interior and ex-Governor of Osun State, alongside his supporters under the banner of Omoluabi Progressives, has officially pulled out of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

This move follows Aregbesola’s suspension from the party last year by the State Working Committee over allegations of anti-party activities during and after the last elections.

A statement released by the Organizing and Publicity Secretary of Omoluabi Progressives, Abosede Oluwaseun, following a meeting in Ilesa on Sunday, cited several reasons for the group’s decision to leave the APC.

These included the exclusion of their leaders from the party without a fair hearing, the suspension and expulsion of key figures, and the consistent undermining of the group’s structure.

The statement further mentioned that the members, after a voice vote, confirmed their intent to switch allegiances and prepare for the 2026 governorship election in Osun State.

Aregbesola, while addressing the group, expressed his satisfaction with the unity shown in making the decision to leave the APC.

He emphasized that it was time to focus on advancing the cause of Omoluabi Progressives, with a vision for good governance in Osun State.

“I am pleased that we have all spoken in unison. This united front will guide us towards achieving collective success. Our goal is to raise Osun to greater prosperity through responsible leadership,” Aregbesola stated.

He encouraged the group to attract like-minded people committed to the cause, assuring them that their movement is open to all, regardless of political or cultural affiliations.

Aregbesola added, “With God’s grace, we shall succeed in making Osun a model state. We have the numbers, strength, and political wisdom to lead the way.”

Chairman of the group, Azeez Adesiji, reiterated their commitment to restoring good governance in Osun by 2026.

“Our mission is to reclaim Osun and return it to the path of good governance. We are ready to work with anyone who shares our vision and ideals,” he said.

Death Toll From Niger Mining Explosion Rises To 25

The death toll from a mining explosion in Sabon Pegi, Mashegu Local Government Area of Niger State has risen to 25, with several other people sustaining injuries.

The blast occurred on Sunday, following a previous explosion just a week ago on the Dikko-Maje-Minna road, where a fuel tanker exploded.

In addition to the confirmed fatalities, many individuals, including women and children, are still missing, and local residents are continuing to search for bodies.

Some victims are believed to be trapped under rubble from the explosion, which also destroyed several residential buildings and shops in the area.

While the cause of the explosion is still under investigation, sources suggest that explosives used for mining at the site were improperly stored in a nearby shop.

It is suspected that these explosives, stored by a man identified as Yushau from New Bussa, detonated, leading to the deadly explosion. Yushau is currently at large, and authorities have launched a manhunt to locate him.

A local resident named Ahmed shared his account of the incident, noting that the explosion happened just as miners were starting their work for the day.

He added that villagers are fearful of further explosions, with concerns that more explosives could still detonate in the area.

While there have been terrorist activities in the region, Ahmed believes this explosion was likely caused by mishandling of explosives used for mining.

The Niger State Police, in a statement from Police Public Relations Officer Superintendent Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed that dynamite caused the explosion.

The police statement detailed that the dynamites were stored in a residential home by Yushau, who intended to use them for mining purposes.

The explosion claimed the life of one woman, Fatima Sadauki, while six others were injured and taken to the General Hospital in Kainji for treatment.

The explosion affected about twelve homes in the area.

Niger State’s Police Commissioner, Shawulu Ebenezer Danmamman, has ordered an investigation into the explosion.

Efforts to locate the fugitive suspect, Yushau, are ongoing, and while normalcy has been restored in the area, authorities continue to monitor the situation to prevent further incidents.

Divorce From Melinda My Biggest Regret – Bill Gates

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has opened up about his divorce from Melinda Gates, describing it as the “mistake I most regret.”

In a candid interview with The Times, the 69-year-old billionaire admitted that the separation was an incredibly difficult experience but noted that he feels “more cheerful now.”

The couple, who announced their split in May 2021 after 27 years of marriage, finalized their divorce later that year.

Despite the emotional pain, Gates acknowledged the deep bond he shared with Melinda, reflecting on the extraordinary nature of their long relationship.

“There’s something extraordinary about spending your entire adult life with one person,” Gates said, recalling the special memories, achievements, and children they shared. “She stood by me through it all.”

Gates also expressed his desire to emulate his parents’ 45-year marriage with Melinda, noting, “I encouraged Melinda to be a bit calmer than my mother was, but we were both quite driven.”

While Gates spent more time with their children than his father did with him, he acknowledged that Melinda took on the majority of the parenting role.

The couple met in 1987 when Melinda joined Microsoft, and together they created the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

However, their divorce led to Melinda stepping away from the foundation, a move that Gates described as particularly difficult for him to accept.

“The divorce was incredibly difficult, and then she chose to step away from the foundation, which was hard,” Gates said.

Reflecting on the emotional aftermath, he described the divorce as one of his biggest failures.

“It has to be at the top of the list. There are others, but none compare. The divorce was miserable for both of us for at least two years.”

Despite their split, Gates and Melinda have worked to maintain a cordial relationship as they co-parent their three adult children: Jennifer, Rory, and Phoebe.

Thousands Of Farmlands Submerged As ‘Mysterious’ Flood Strikes Kwara

A devastating flood has submerged thousands of hectares of farmlands in Shonga, Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State, causing extensive damage to rice farming.

The flood has displaced hundreds of farmers and destroyed agricultural investments valued in millions of naira.

During a visit by a state government delegation led by Deputy Chief of Staff, Princess Bukola Babalola, the Emir of Shonga, Dr. Halidu Yahya Ndanusa, expressed deep concern over the incident, which he said posed a serious threat to food security.

He called for a thorough investigation into the cause of the unusual flood, emphasizing that the Sahel region, including areas like Burkina Faso, Niger, and Mali, had experienced no rainfall, making the flood’s origin particularly puzzling.

The Emir noted that, while Kainji Dam had denied responsibility for the floodwaters, officials from Jebba Dam acknowledged the possibility of their involvement and mentioned plans to close the dam soon.

He further expressed his hope that such an incident would not occur again in the future, as it jeopardizes years of hard work in attracting farmers to the region.

Community leader, Muhammad Abdulkadir, revealed that farmers from various northern states, including Kebbi, Zamfara, Kano, and Niger, had lost millions of naira in rice crops to the flooding.

He stressed the need for government assistance and suggested that a permanent solution, such as dredging the River Niger, should be explored to prevent recurring flooding in the region.

In her address, Princess Babalola assured the affected farmers that the state government would provide support to alleviate the effects of the flood on their livelihoods.

She promised that the complaints of the farmers would be conveyed to the Governor, and efforts would be made to find a lasting solution to the flooding problem.

The delegation also distributed relief materials worth millions of naira to the affected farmers in the Tada community.

The state government pledged to further investigate the cause of the flood and provide continuous assistance to the farming community in the affected area.

Colombia’s President Rejects US Deportation Flights Over Migrant Treatment

Colombian President, Gustavo Petro, has announced that he will not allow US deportation flights carrying Colombian migrants to enter his country’s airspace.

In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, Petro emphasized that the United States should not treat Colombian nationals as criminals.

He insisted that these flights would only be permitted if the US created a protocol ensuring the “dignified treatment” of migrants.

Petro also mentioned that he had already halted US military planes that were en route to Colombia carrying deported migrants, though he did not provide further details.

At the time of reporting, there was no immediate confirmation from the United States regarding whether any deportation flights had been blocked.

This development follows similar criticism from Brazil, where the government condemned the treatment of Brazilian deportees on US flights, accusing the US of violating basic human rights. Brazil specifically criticized the handcuffing of the deported individuals, calling it a “flagrant disregard” for their dignity.

Petro clarified that he would allow US civilian flights carrying deported migrants as long as they were treated humanely, without being “treated like criminals.”

Hoodlums Attack Female NSCDC Officer, Leave Her In Coma

A female officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) has been severely beaten into a coma by hoodlums in Kwara State.

The incident occurred during the turbaning ceremony of a newly appointed traditional titleholder in Ilọrin.

Eyewitnesses report that the officer, a mother of one, was allegedly assaulted by the hoodlums who were upset that she was stopping them from extorting money from a former House of Representatives member.

According to one witness, the attackers left her with severe facial and hand injuries, and she was later rushed to a hospital where she regained consciousness.

A second eyewitness shared that the officer’s colleague attempted to fire a weapon in retaliation, but was stopped by another officer due to the sensitive nature of the environment, as the incident took place near the Emir’s palace in Ilọrin.

However, when contacted, the Public Relations Officer of the NSCDC, Ayoola Michael, downplayed the incident, claiming it was a “minor accident” that occurred during the ceremony.

Michael explained that the officer was in a moving vehicle when she accidentally missed her step and fell while the hoodlums were trying to collect money from the former politician.
