Alcohol Should Have Cancer Warning Label – US Surgeon General

The United States’ top health official, Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, has urged for mandatory health warnings on alcoholic drinks to highlight their link to cancer, emphasizing the need to reassess daily consumption limits due to health risks.

In a statement released on Friday, Murthy highlighted that alcohol is a known, preventable cause of cancer, responsible for around 100,000 cancer cases and 20,000 cancer-related deaths each year in the US.

He stressed that this toll far surpasses the approximately 13,500 alcohol-related traffic fatalities annually.

Despite this, he noted, most Americans remain unaware of the cancer risks linked to alcohol.

“Alcohol is a well-established, preventable cause of cancer,” Murthy said. “Yet the majority of Americans are unaware of this risk.”

He called for updated warning labels on alcoholic beverages, urging Congress to modernize the existing warnings, which have not been changed since 1988.

Current labels only caution against drinking during pregnancy and warn of impaired driving, while other countries, such as South Korea and Ireland, have updated their labels to reflect the cancer risks associated with alcohol.

Alcohol consumption increases the risk of at least seven types of cancer, including breast, colorectal, liver, and mouth cancers, with breast cancer alone accounting for 16.4 percent of all alcohol-related cases.

A 2019 survey revealed that only 45 percent of Americans recognized alcohol as a cancer risk factor, compared to higher awareness levels for other known carcinogens.

The advisory also questioned the sufficiency of the current US dietary guidelines, which allow up to two drinks per day for men and one for women.

Shockingly, 17 percent of alcohol-related cancer deaths occur among individuals who stay within these recommended limits.

Murthy emphasized the crucial role health care providers play in educating patients about alcohol’s cancer risks and offering interventions and support when needed.

Drunk Policeman Frees 13 Suspects To Celebrate New Year

A police officer in Zambia has been arrested after he released 13 suspects from custody while under the influence of alcohol, allowing them to celebrate the New Year.

Detective Inspector Titus Phiri, stationed at the Leonard Cheelo police station in Lusaka, took the keys to the cells from Constable Serah Banda on New Year’s Eve and unlocked the cells.

“In a state of intoxication, [Phiri] forcibly seized cell keys… Subsequently, Detective Inspector Phiri unlocked both the male and female cells and instructed the suspects to leave, stating they were free to cross over into the new year,” explained police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga.

The suspects, who were accused of crimes such as assault, robbery, and burglary, were all allowed to escape. Out of 15 detainees, 13 took advantage of the situation and fled.

Following the incident, Phiri himself ran away, and a manhunt has been launched to locate the escaped suspects.

The officer has not yet provided a response to the allegations.

The incident has drawn mixed reactions, with former presidential spokesperson and lawyer Dickson Jere recalling a similar situation from 1997, where a judge released 53 suspects over delays in their court appearances.

2027: Opposition Working On New Party To Oust Tinubu, Says Lukman

Opposition political figures, including disgruntled members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), are reportedly in talks to establish a new political party aimed at defeating President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 general elections.

This revelation came in a New Year message titled “Political Competition Should Define New Nigeria,” by Dr. Salihu Lukman, the former APC National Vice Chairman (North-West), who resigned from the party in 2024.

Lukman urged Nigerians to join forces in creating a viable political platform that could rival the dominance of the APC and other established parties, such as the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP), and New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).

He stressed the importance of electing true democratic leaders over authoritarian figures and warned that continued political monopoly risks undermining effective leadership and perpetuating the country’s challenges.

Although Lukman did not reveal the names of the opposition leaders involved in these discussions, he emphasized that the success of this new platform hinged on Nigerians’ commitment to forming a party that would adhere to democratic principles and operate distinctively from the existing parties.

Meanwhile, the NNPP expressed concerns over what it perceives as the APC’s attempt to create a one-party state, accusing the administration of anti-people policies.

The party’s leader in Kano, Hashimu Suleiman Dungurawa, warned that such actions could lead to a loss of support for the ruling party in the 2027 elections.

In another development, former Lagos governorship candidate Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour (GRV), who contested under the LP in 2023, declared his intention to run again in 2027.

He did not disclose whether he would remain with the Labour Party or shift to another platform, but emphasized the importance of opposition unity in the upcoming race.

The PDP in Kebbi State also reassured its members that the party remains unified, despite speculations of defections to the APC.

The state chairman, Alhaji Usman Bello-Suru, dismissed reports of an impending mass exodus, stressing that the PDP would continue its role as a strong opposition force in the state.

In another statement, former Anambra Governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, called for urgent reforms from President Tinubu, criticizing his foreign trips and the worsening economic conditions in Nigeria.

Obi cited alarming statistics, including over 100 million Nigerians living in extreme poverty, and proposed sweeping reforms aimed at addressing Nigeria’s crises.

The ruling APC, however, dismissed Obi’s remarks as misleading, claiming that significant progress had been made under Tinubu’s administration, including improvements in economic indicators, national security, and anti-corruption efforts.

The APC maintained that the nation is on a path to sustainable growth and urged Nigerians to remain confident in the government’s plans for a prosperous future.

Ebonyi War Victims Call For Boundary Demarcation, Urgent Government Intervention

Residents of Azuofia Edda community in the Abakaliki Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, who were severely affected by communal conflicts, have called on the government to prioritize the demarcation of the disputed land between them and their neighboring community in Cross River State to restore lasting peace.

Mr. Innocent Igwe, Chairman of Zone Five Azuofia Edda community, made the appeal during the distribution of relief materials donated by Ebonyi-born businessman and philanthropist, Mr. Monday Elom.

The relief effort, aimed at easing the hardships of war victims, included essential items such as two cows, over 100 bags of rice, cartons of Maggi seasoning, salt, assorted drinks, and cash gifts, and took place at St. Mary’s Primary School, Azuofia Edda.

Igwe, a retired Headmaster, expressed concern over the deteriorating state of basic infrastructure in the community, including schools, health centers, boreholes, and roads, all of which have become non-functional.

He urged both state and federal authorities to take urgent action to address these issues and alleviate the suffering of the residents.

The war victims included 45 widows, more than 100 elders, orphans, and other vulnerable individuals who have borne the brunt of the violence that erupted from a boundary dispute in 2017.

Elom, Chief Executive Director of Molompet Nigeria Limited, expressed that his donation was a way to alleviate the ongoing suffering of his people, highlighting the lack of government presence and support in the aftermath of the conflict.

The philanthropist lamented that despite the crisis ending years ago, the community continues to face neglect, with over 150 graduates living in the area without employment opportunities.

He appealed to stakeholders, including political leaders and well-meaning organizations, to do more for the community.

“I urge our political leaders, especially Governor Francis Nwifuru, Senator Peter Onyekachi Nwebonyi, and other stakeholders, to come to the aid of this war-torn community,” Elom stated.

“The people are suffering—80% of their farmlands have been taken, many homes were destroyed, and infrastructure is in ruins. It is time for action to address the devastation and improve their living conditions.”

Elom also expressed disappointment over the state of education and healthcare in the community, noting that most schools were burned down during the war and have yet to be rebuilt.

He stressed the importance of providing educational facilities and healthcare to help the community rebuild.

Igwe concluded by acknowledging the contributions of local figures like Elom but called for more to be done, especially in providing employment opportunities for the youth and addressing the community’s basic needs.

“Our people are struggling, and the government must take decisive steps to bring relief,” he said.

NNPC Invites Obasanjo To Inspect Rehabilitated Refineries Amid $2bn Expenditure Concerns

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) has extended an invitation to former President Olusegun Obasanjo to visit its rehabilitated refineries following his recent criticism of the $2 billion investment in the facilities.

Obasanjo, during a television interview, expressed doubts about the effectiveness of the rehabilitation efforts at the Port Harcourt and Warri refineries.

He pointed to the significant historical challenges faced during his own administration in attempting to revive Nigeria’s refining capacity, while questioning the effectiveness of the current investments.

“I was told not too long ago that since that time, more than two billion dollars have been squandered on the refinery, and they still will not work,” Obasanjo remarked.

He added that if the refineries were functioning, there would be no need for foreign investors like Aliko Dangote to build his own refinery.

In response, NNPC’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Olufemi Soneye, acknowledged Obasanjo’s esteemed position but defended the current progress, emphasizing the company’s transformation from a loss-making entity to a profit-driven global energy player.

He reassured the public that the rehabilitation efforts were substantial, involving comprehensive overhauls rather than mere Turnaround Maintenance, which had previously failed to yield lasting improvements.

Soneye credited the successes to the leadership of NNPC’s board, under CEO Mele Kyari, and the supportive energy policies of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

He invited Obasanjo to personally inspect the refineries, stating that his vast experience and wisdom would be highly valued in assessing the progress made.

Nnamdi Kanu’s Family Expresses Disappointment Over Tinubu’s Failure To Honour Election Pact

The family of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has voiced their dismay over President Bola Tinubu’s failure to fulfill an alleged agreement made by his son, Seyi, regarding Kanu’s release during the 2023 presidential election.

Prince Emmanuel Kanu, Nnamdi Kanu’s younger brother, revealed in a statement that shortly before the election, Seyi Tinubu, with his father’s approval, met with him in Abuja.

During this meeting, an agreement was reportedly reached in which IPOB would not boycott the election in exchange for a commitment from Tinubu to secure Nnamdi Kanu’s release if he became president.

Despite Tinubu’s victory and nearly two years in office, Kanu remains in detention, even though the presiding judge, Justice Binta Nyako, has recused herself from the case.

Prince Emmanuel expressed his frustration with Tinubu’s failure to honor the agreement, especially after public assurances made during Tinubu’s campaign, including his visit to Owerri.

He emphasized that IPOB had upheld its end of the bargain by not calling for an election boycott, despite having the capacity to do so, and by overcoming internal divisions against such a call.

Prince Emmanuel further criticized the Nigerian judiciary for not assigning a new judge to Kanu’s case, despite several rulings in his favor, including the Court of Appeal’s discharge order and the Supreme Court’s stance on his bail.

He described the situation as a betrayal of trust, stating that the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu lacked legal justification and was a failure to honor the commitments made during the election period.
