Ukraine Will Fight To End Russia’s Invasion In 2025 – Zelensky Vows

Rubble from the ongoing Ukraine/Russian War

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has pledged that Ukraine will do everything in its power in 2025 to put an end to Russia’s ongoing invasion, which has now lasted nearly three years.

In a New Year’s address delivered on Tuesday, Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine would continue to fight for its freedom and sovereignty, no matter the cost.

“May 2025 be our year,” Zelensky declared, as he spoke to the nation just before midnight in Kyiv. “We know peace won’t be handed to us, but we will do everything we can to stop Russia and end the war.”

The year 2024 has been challenging for Ukraine, as it lost more territory to Russia than in 2023, according to an AFP analysis.

The country is also facing the uncertainty of reduced U.S. support, especially with the impending presidency of Donald Trump, who has promised to end the war within 24 hours of taking office.

There are concerns that Ukraine could be pressured to concede land controlled by Russia as part of a peace deal under Trump’s administration.

Despite these challenges, Zelensky expressed confidence that Ukraine must continue its fight to strengthen its position both on the battlefield and at the negotiating table.

“Every day in 2025, we must fight for a strong Ukraine,” he said, adding that such a Ukraine would be respected and heard on both the battlefield and in peace talks.

Zelensky also spoke optimistically about the potential for peace under the new U.S. president.

“I have no doubt that the new American president is willing and capable of achieving peace and ending Putin’s aggression,” he said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, in his own New Year’s address, did not mention the war directly but praised Russia’s soldiers for their “courage and bravery.”

Russian Defence Minister Andrei Belousov also honored fallen soldiers, describing them as heroes who died defending Russia against “Nazism,” a claim Putin has used to justify his invasion.

As the war continues, Ukraine has increased its attacks on Russian soil, including drone strikes that have targeted military and industrial infrastructure.

On Tuesday, a Ukrainian drone attack caused a fire at an oil depot in western Russia.

Zelensky has also called on Ukraine’s allies to help end the conflict and bring lasting peace. On the streets of Kyiv, many Ukrainians echoed his sentiment.

Kateryna Chemeryz, a teacher, expressed a hope for peace and the return of Ukrainian soldiers to their families: “I want peace for Ukraine, for people to stop dying, and for our soldiers to come home and celebrate next year’s holidays with their families.”

Tetiana, a civil servant, shared a similar wish, stating that her dream for 2025 was for Ukraine to win and reclaim all its territories.

As the U.S. prepares for Trump’s return to the White House, there are concerns among Ukrainians about the future of military aid and the potential for a peace deal that could require Ukraine to make territorial concessions.

However, many, like Tetiana, believe Ukraine should shape its own future, regardless of external pressure.

For Chemeryz, Trump’s return to power has caused anxiety. “I was hoping for a different outcome,” she admitted, referring to the uncertain future of U.S. support. But for others, like Tetiana, the focus is clear: Ukraine must continue its struggle to secure peace and reclaim its land.

Five Killed, Others Injured In New Year Fireworks Accidents In Germany

German President,

Five people have died in Germany due to accidents involving fireworks during the New Year celebrations, with several others injured, police reported in an initial count.

Fireworks are a traditional part of the German New Year festivities, but their use has sparked ongoing debates about banning the most powerful devices, as they often result in significant injuries, noise, and pollution.

This year, 13 law enforcement officers were injured, including one seriously, due to fireworks-related incidents, according to police spokesman Florian Nath.

In Berlin, approximately 330 people were detained overnight, but authorities noted that, in contrast to previous years, there were no major acts of violence or serious disturbances.

In the northwest town of Paderborn, a 24-year-old man died after detonating a pyrotechnic rocket. Police suspect the victim may have made the device himself.

In Oschatz, a 45-year-old man died from severe head injuries after igniting a “pyrotechnic bomb,” which was identified as a powerful F4 category firework, typically requiring a special permit to purchase.

Another fatality occurred in Hartha, Saxony, where a 50-year-old man died instantly from head injuries when attempting to detonate a pyrotechnic pipe bomb.

In Hamburg, a 20-year-old man died while igniting a pyrotechnic firework. Lastly, near Berlin in Kremen, a fifth man died after mishandling fireworks, and three others were seriously injured in similar incidents.

Crisis Brews In Enugu Community Over Alleged Imposition Of Traditional Ruler

Tensions are escalating in Umuekwenu Autonomous Community, located in the Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu State, over an alleged attempt to impose a traditional ruler on the community.

On Friday, hundreds of community members gathered at the Udenu Local Government Council headquarters to protest what they claimed was the imposition of Chief Chinwe Eze as their traditional ruler.

The protesters contend that the state’s commissioner for local government affairs is attempting to install Chief Chinwe Eze without their consent, as no election has been held to select the new Igwe (king).

The community had previously taken legal action against the move, filing a suit at the Enugu State High Court in Obollo Afor, which resulted in an injunction barring the commissioner from proceeding with Eze’s installation.

The court order, under Suit No: OB/40/2024, mandated that the status quo remain until the court determines the matter in full.

Despite the court injunction, the community claims that the commissioner has tried to go ahead with the installation.

This has led to widespread protests, with residents voicing their opposition and holding placards that condemn the alleged imposition.

One of the protest leaders, Hillary Onah, addressed the local government officials, stating, “The people of Umuekwenu are here today to protest the fraudulent certificate of observation handed to Chief Chinwe Eze. We have not elected anyone as the Igwe-elect, and we won’t accept this.”

The community further alleged that they were misled when the Enugu State Government, represented by officials from the Ministry of Chieftaincy Affairs, arrived at a meeting intended to distribute agricultural palliatives, only to present the certificate of observation instead.

The residents claim they were not informed about any election and maintain that no such election has occurred.

Onah added, “We have written letters to the governor, the Secretary to the Government, and others, and have met with the commissioner for Chieftaincy Affairs. However, we remain skeptical of his assurances, which is why our protest continues.”

The ongoing dispute over the Igweship has been a source of tension for 17 years, with residents blaming the ambition of one individual for blocking the due process of electing their Igwe.

Despite the court’s ruling to maintain the status quo, the community insists that the legal order must be respected and the process should follow the proper channels.

“We reject what has happened entirely. The Igweship of Umuekwenu is not for sale,” Onah concluded.

‘The Red Biro Is Still With Me’, Fubara Taunts Wike’s Camp

Governor Similanayi Fubara has mocked the camp of Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, by declaring that he still holds “the red biro.”

The statement was made by Fubara through his Chief Press Secretary, Nelson Chukwudi, during a Crossover service held at St. Paul’s Anglican Church in Opobo Town, Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Area, early on January 1.

At the service, Fubara expressed unshakable faith in God’s power to defeat those he described as “self-styled enemies” of the state and its people.

As part of the service, Fubara led the congregation in a song of gallantry, with attendees singing along to the words: “At the mention of Your name (God), every knee shall bow. At the mention of Your name, every tongue confess. That You are Lord, You are Lord, You are King, You are King of kings.”

Fubara emphasized that the lyrics were not just meant to comfort but to inspire confidence in God as the guiding force for greater victories in the coming year.

“The Red Biro is still filled. It is still here with me. Every plan of the enemy will continue to fail,” Fubara declared.

Bishop Dr. Emmanuel Oko-Jaja of the Anglican Diocese of Niger Delta, who conducted the service, reflected on the challenges of 2024, including conspiracies, blackmail, economic hardship, and illness.

Despite these struggles, Oko-Jaja praised God for helping them persevere through it all.

He encouraged the congregation to remain hopeful, assuring them that in 2025, God would continue to uplift and bless them, leading them to victory.

The Bishop also prayed for peace, unity, and the continued development of the state in alignment with the key objectives outlined in the state’s 2025 Budget of Inclusive Growth and Development.

Tinubu Orders Reintroduction of History In Primary, Secondary Schools After 13 Years of Removal From Curriculum

The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, has confirmed that President Bola Tinubu has directed the reintroduction of Nigerian History as a subject in primary and secondary schools across the country.

During an appearance on Channels Television’s End-of-Year Special Review Show on Tuesday, Alausa stated, “President Tinubu has mandated the return of Nigerian History as a subject in basic education.”

In 2009, under the leadership of former President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, the Nigerian government removed History from the basic education curriculum, citing the subject’s declining popularity and a lack of jobs for History graduates, alongside a shortage of qualified teachers.

However, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the reintroduction of History was officially launched on Thursday by the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, who was represented by the Minister of State for Education, Goodluck Opiah, in a ceremony held in Abuja.

Adamu expressed concern about the national cohesion being threatened by a lack of knowledge regarding Nigeria’s history, particularly as the country faces growing divisiveness due to the absence of the subject.

He stated that the removal of History from the curriculum had led to a retreat into “primordial sentiments.”

The Education Minister also announced that 3,700 history teachers had been selected for the first round of training to enhance the teaching of the subject at the basic education level.

He remarked, “History used to be one of the foundational subjects in our classrooms, but for some inexplicable reasons, it was removed.

This led to its expulsion from subject combinations for both internal and external examinations, leaving students with fewer opportunities to learn about their past.”

Adamu referred to the removal of History as a “monumental mistake,” citing the negative consequences that followed, including a decline in moral and civic values, and a disconnect from the nation’s historical roots.

The focus of the reintroduction initiative, Adamu explained, is on the training and retraining of teachers to enhance their skills in teaching the subject, ensuring that they are equipped with the necessary knowledge to convey the significance of Nigerian history.

At the event, Dr. Hamid Bobboyi, the Executive Secretary of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), confirmed that 3,700 history teachers had been selected from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) for training.

Bobboyi explained that the selection process was done on a pro-rata basis, with each state and the FCT contributing 100 teachers.

This training aims to equip the selected teachers with the necessary skills to teach the newly updated History curriculum.

Following the directive for the subject’s reintroduction, UBEC and the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) quickly began implementing the plan, culminating in the official flag-off of the training program.

Man To Sweep Court Premises For 40 Days For Stealing Wallet – Judge Rules

A 23-year-old man, Rabiu Gambo, has been sentenced by a Kaduna Chief Magistrates’ Court to sweep the court premises for 40 days after he pleaded guilty to stealing a wallet.

Magistrate Ibrahim Emmanuel imposed the sentence on Tuesday, noting that the court showed leniency because Gambo had spared the court time by admitting to his crime.

Emmanuel advised Gambo to avoid further criminal activities once he had completed his punishment, adding that the sentence was intended to serve as a warning to others.

The prosecution, Inspector Chidi Leo, explained that the theft occurred on December 27 when Yusuf Mai-shago, a resident of Ungwan Sarki in Kaduna, reported the incident to the Malali Police Station.

Hardship: Tinubu Launches Company To Reduce Food And Drug Prices

In a bid to tackle rising food prices and promote local manufacturing of essential drugs, President Bola Tinubu has announced the establishment of a National Credit Guarantee Company.

The new initiative, aimed at boosting economic growth and reducing inflation, is expected to begin operations by the end of the second quarter of 2025.

Tinubu made the announcement in his New Year address, outlining the government’s plans to help alleviate hardship faced by Nigerians.

The President emphasized the company’s role in expanding access to credit for individuals and businesses, particularly under-served groups such as women and youth.

It will also serve to strengthen confidence in the financial system and promote risk-sharing among financial institutions.

“Though 2024 posed numerous challenges to our citizens, I am confident that the New Year will bring brighter days. Economic indicators point to a positive outlook for our nation, and with this new initiative, we aim to lower food costs and reduce inflation from its current rate of 34.6% to 15%,” said Tinubu.

The new company will be a partnership between government institutions like the Bank of Industry (BOI), Nigerian Consumer Credit Corporation (NCCC), Nigerian Sovereign Investment Agency (NSIA), the Ministry of Finance, as well as the private sector and multilateral institutions.

The goal is to drive growth, industrialization, and improve the living standards of Nigerians.

Tinubu also called for the cooperation of states in embracing the Compressed National Gas (CNG) programme to reduce transportation costs.

Furthermore, he reaffirmed his commitment to holding a youth conference in the first quarter of 2025, a promise made following the #EndBadGovernance protests.

The President’s address was met with criticism from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which expressed concerns over the lack of immediate and concrete steps in his message.

The PDP urged Tinubu to address rising fuel prices, widespread hunger, insecurity, and corruption in the country.

It also challenged the President to account for funds generated from the removal of fuel subsidies and to take action against alleged corruption in government.

Despite the criticism, Tinubu urged Nigerians to remain hopeful and united, pledging to continue reforms that will foster growth and prosperity.

He also announced the launch of the National Values Charter and a national orientation campaign to promote patriotism and shared values among citizens.
