Political Thugs Plotting To Attack INEC Offices – Edo Govt Raises Alarm

The Edo State government has raised an alarm over plans by political thugs to attack Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) offices in several Local Government Areas of the state.

Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare, made this known while addressing journalists, revealing that the military had successfully stopped an attempt to overrun the INEC office in Oredo Local Government Area, located in the state capital.

Advertorial

Nehikhare expressed the government’s concerns, stating that political thugs had already taken control of INEC offices in Etsako West and Esan West Local Government Areas, in what appeared to be an effort to hijack the electoral process.

He said, “The soldiers repelled the thugs, and the thugs have since moved across the road from the INEC facility. The soldiers successfully stopped the thugs from invading the INEC facility. We urge the military to carry out similar actions across the other 17 LGAs.”

Advertorial

The commissioner also highlighted certain collation centers, which are strongholds of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), including Oredo, Egor, and Ikpoba/Okha Local Government Areas.

According to Nehikhare, the actions of political thugs would not intimidate or deter the people of Edo State.

He urged citizens to turn out in large numbers to cast their votes, reassuring them that the military had secured the Oredo INEC Secretariat and was working to protect the people and INEC facilities.

Advertorial

“We want to encourage the soldiers to please go across the 18 local government headquarters and take possession of these collation centers,” he added.

When contacted for a response, the spokesperson for the Edo State Police Command said they would follow up, but had not responded as of the time of filing this report.

Court Dismisses APC Bid To Halt Enugu Local Government Elections

A Federal High Court (FHC) in Abuja dismissed a request made on Friday to halt the upcoming local government elections in Enugu State, scheduled for Saturday.

The application was submitted by the counsel for the All Progressives Congress (APC), Michael Aondoakaa, SAN, but Justice Peter Lifu ruled against it, stating that stopping the elections would not align with the interests of justice.

Justice Lifu further explained that the evidence presented regarding the delivery of hearing notices to the defendants for the day’s proceedings was insufficient.

Advertorial

Referring to Section 36 of the 1999 Constitution, he stressed that suspending the electoral process on September 21 would violate the principle of fair hearing.

The APC had initiated the suit, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1325/2024, in an originating summons, naming the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC), and Nwanfor Alphonsus Onyeachonam as the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd defendants, respectively.

Advertorial

Filed on September 6, the suit contained nine specific reliefs, including “a perpetual injunction restraining the 2nd defendant (ENSIEC) from conducting any election in Nigeria, including the Local Government Election in Enugu State, without the plaintiffs’ participation through their duly elected principal officer of the State Executive Committee (SEC) registered with the 1st defendant (INEC).”

The APC also sought “an order directing the 1st and 2nd defendants to recognize only the democratically elected principal officer of the party’s State Executive Committee (SEC) in Enugu State, as registered with INEC, for the execution of their constitutional and statutory duties.”

Advertorial

Additionally, one of the requested reliefs called for “a perpetual injunction preventing the 3rd defendant (Onyeachonam) from presenting himself as the elected principal officer of the plaintiff’s Executive Committee in any election in Nigeria, including the Enugu State Local Government election, or from selling the plaintiff’s nomination forms or collecting payments for such sales.”

This follows a recent ruling by Justice Emeka Nwite of the FHC, who denied an ex-parte motion seeking to prevent the local government elections in Enugu.

Advertorial

Instead, he ordered an accelerated hearing of the case and approved the substituted service of court documents to the defendants, along with shortened timelines.

The case was later reassigned to Justice Peter Lifu after being returned to the chief judge, Justice John Tsoho.

Jewish Priests Urge Tinubu To Release Nnamdi Kanu Over Worsening Health

Jewish priests under the Unique Forum of Orthodox Judaism have appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to release the Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

The appeal came through an open letter in which the group urged that Kanu’s release would promote peace and stability in Nigeria, particularly in the South East, where tensions have risen due to his prolonged detention.

The leader of the forum, Rosh Nasishemtov Ihe madunweiheyah, along with members, visited Kanu’s family at their Isiama Afaraukwu residence, expressing their concerns.

Advertorial

Madunweiheyah, who co-signed the letter with Elder Okamulata Egbu, stated that Kanu’s detention was unjust, emphasizing that he was advocating for the well-being of his people and committed no crime to justify his continued incarceration.

The priests said Kanu’s release would pave the way for peace in the country, arguing that Nigeria’s challenges were exacerbated by his detention.

They further noted that Kanu is not to blame for Nigeria’s problems, but rather part of the solution.

Advertorial

The forum called on President Tinubu to consider these reasons and grant Kanu his freedom.

Meanwhile, Kanu’s family has raised fresh concerns about his deteriorating health, calling on President Tinubu to allow him access to quality medical care outside the Department of State Services (DSS) detention facility in Abuja.

According to the family, Kanu has been held in solitary confinement since 2021 after his extraordinary rendition from Kenya.

Advertorial

Kanu’s sister, Princess Nnenne Kate Kanu, expressed her gratitude to the Jewish priests for their support and solidarity.

She noted that the family has been encouraged by various groups who have continued to identify with them during this difficult time.

She stressed that Kanu’s detention was not due to selfish motives, but because of his fight for justice for the Biafran people.

Princess Kate also reflected on Kanu’s previous warnings about Nigeria’s current situation, saying that all his prophecies had come to pass.

Advertorial

She reiterated that her brother does not condone violence in the South East and wants peace to be restored, adding that his release would quickly bring calm to the region.

She also expressed deep concern about Kanu’s health, citing a physician’s recommendation for further medical examination outside the DSS detention facility, where better medical equipment would be available.

The family urged President Tinubu to heed these pleas and release Kanu for the sake of his well-being and the peace of the nation.
