Enugu Police Commissioner Reaffirms Ban On Fireworks During Festive Season

The Enugu State Commissioner of Police, Kanayo Uzuegbu, has reiterated the ban on the sale and unauthorized use of fireworks, including “knockouts,” “bangers,” and “crackers,” for the duration of the festive season.

In a statement issued on Monday and signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, Enugu Command, Daniel Ndukwe, the commissioner emphasized that the prohibition is aimed at preventing criminals from using fireworks to carry out illegal activities, reducing public panic, and minimizing risks to lives and property.

The statement also urged businesses and individuals involved in the sale or use of fireworks to cease immediately, with the warning that violators will face legal consequences.

The commissioner further appealed to parents and guardians to discourage children and wards from purchasing or using fireworks, stressing that anyone caught violating the ban will be held accountable under the law.

Uzuegbu also warned against indiscriminate bush burning during the harmattan season, highlighting the serious risks of fire outbreaks, which could endanger lives, destroy property, and disrupt the social and economic stability of the community.

He urged residents to remain law-abiding and vigilant throughout the yuletide season and beyond, advising against actions that could compromise their safety and security.

CAF Awards: Super Falcons Named Women’s National Team Of The Year

The Super Falcons of Nigeria have been awarded Women’s National Team of the Year at this year’s Confederation of African Football (CAF) Awards, held in Marrakech, Morocco.

The Nigerian team clinched the prestigious title ahead of South Africa’s Banyana Banyana and Morocco’s Atlas Lionesses, who were also nominated for the honor.

Ibrahim Gusau, the President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), received the award on behalf of the team and dedicated it to Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, for her unwavering support of women’s football in the country.

The Super Falcons’ victory comes after a historic achievement: they secured qualification for the 2024 Paris Olympics, marking their first appearance in the Games in 16 years.

However, despite their remarkable qualification, the team faced challenges in the Olympics, failing to progress past the group stage after losing all their matches.

This was in contrast to their strong performance in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, where they reached the Round of 16 with impressive results.

In the men’s category, the Ivory Coast national football team, the Elephants, defeated Nigeria’s Super Eagles to claim the National Team of the Year award.

ADC Calls On President Tinubu To End “Irresponsible, Senseless Borrowing” Amid Economic Crisis

Chief Ralphs Nwosu, the National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has urged President Bola Tinubu’s administration to halt what he termed the “senseless borrowing” that he believes has contributed to Nigeria’s economic difficulties.

Speaking during the party’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Abuja on Tuesday, Nwosu criticized the Federal Government’s escalating borrowing habits and its ineffective economic policies, which he said have worsened the nation’s financial instability.

He called for an immediate overhaul of the government’s fiscal approach.

In addition to addressing national economic issues, Nwosu revealed that the ADC was taking steps to address a common problem in Nigerian politics: politicians using the party as a springboard for electoral success, only to abandon it once they assume office.

Nwosu also commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for its support of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanisms in resolving electoral conflicts.

He highlighted the ADC’s use of ADR to settle internal disputes and promote unity within the party.

“The ADC has successfully resolved internal disputes and fostered unity through the INEC-backed ADR process. This underscores our commitment to internal democracy and inclusiveness,” Nwosu stated.

Reflecting on the party’s journey since its formation in 2006, Nwosu expressed the ADC’s ambition to become a dominant political force by 2027.

He emphasized the importance of building stronger alliances, citing the ongoing partnership with the People’s Redemption Party (PRP), and called on party members to work together with renewed unity and focus.

“After 20 years, it’s time to get things right. If I have wronged anyone, now is the time for reconciliation. By 2025, the ADC will be the leading party in Nigeria,” he said.

Nwosu also addressed the challenges the party faced following a factional split after its 2023 presidential candidate.

As part of efforts to heal the rift, Nwosu announced that bans placed on certain members would be lifted, signaling a new beginning for the ADC.

He further emphasized the need for the ADC to build strong, enduring institutions and urged members to strive for greater success.

“Why do we only elect a few to public office? Why can’t we dominate the legislative houses?” he asked.

Looking ahead, Nwosu expressed optimism about the party’s reforms, confident that the ADC would soon emerge as the party of choice for Nigerians.

The NEC meeting, held during the festive Christmas season, was described by Nwosu as a symbolic “new beginning” for the party, reinforcing its commitment to unity, love, and progress.

Non-Indigenes Declare 15 Anambra LGAs Unsafe Over Rising Insecurity

Non-indigenes living in Anambra State have raised alarms over escalating insecurity, labeling 15 of the state’s 21 local government areas (LGAs) as unsafe.

The group, represented by Chairman Alhaji Abubakar Sani and Secretary Chief Adebayo Adewusi, has called on Governor Chukwuma Soludo to declare a state of emergency in the affected regions.

The group expressed deep concern over the worsening security, particularly in Onitsha, which had previously been considered a safe area.

Recently, Onitsha has seen a surge in criminal activities, including kidnappings.

They cited several instances of high-profile abductions, such as the case of the retired Anglican Archbishop of Nnewi Diocese, Most Rev. Dr. Godwin Okpala, who was kidnapped in Ezinifite, Aguata LGA, and has been held captive for nearly a week.

The group outlined a number of “no-go” zones across various LGAs, including:

Orumba Area: Ogbunka, Umunze, Ajali

Aguata LGA: Ezinifite, Uga, Umuchu

Ogbaru LGA: Ogbe-Ukwu near Iyiowa, Okoti, Ogwuaniocha, Ossomalla, Atani

Ihiala LGA: Ihiala town, Mbosi, Azia, Uli, Amorka, parts of Okija

Nnewi South LGA: Ukpor, Osumenyi, and surrounding areas

Awka North LGA: Achalla, Mgbakwu, and nearby communities

Awka South LGA: Known for active cult-related activities

Oyi LGA: Nsugbe, Nkwelle, and surrounding areas

Onitsha North and South LGAs: Fegge, Odoakpu, 3-3

Idemili North and South LGAs: Abatete, Nkpor, Ogidi, Obosi, Oba, Ojoto

Ekwusigo LGA: Ozubulu, Oraifite

In response to the escalating violence, the group urged the state government to establish joint security teams, including the Armed Forces, Police, Civil Defence, DSS, and the Anambra Vigilante Group (AVG), with proper support and equipment to combat the growing criminal activity.

The group stressed the need for swift action, especially ahead of the holiday season, stating that urgent intervention is required to ensure residents’ safety and allow for a peaceful Christmas.

“If the governor wants Anambra people to return and enjoy Christmas, immediate action is necessary,” they said.

Gov. Mbah Launches Enugu Geographic Information System, Declares End To Land Grabbing

In a significant step towards reforming land administration in Enugu State, Governor Dr. Peter Mbah on Monday unveiled the Enugu State Geographic Information System (ENGIS), marking a major achievement for the state’s development.

Mbah, who signed the Enugu State Geographic Information System Service Bill into law in March, emphasized that this initiative was part of his administration’s promise to modernize governance, starting with the simplification and sanitization of land management.

Speaking at the inauguration of the ENGIS office and system in Enugu, Mbah said, “This is not just a victory for the government but also for Ndi Enugu, as it brings integrity and transparency to land transactions. Today, we are putting an end to land grabbing, unauthorized construction, double allocations, and revenue diversion.”

The governor further highlighted that the system would help advance the state’s economy, aiming to increase its GDP from $4.4 billion to $30 billion over the next four to eight years.

He explained that the ENGIS system would allow title applications to be processed quickly—within 48 hours—creating a more efficient, transparent, and business-friendly environment.

Mbah stressed the importance of digital investment to boost ease of doing business in the state.

“With ENGIS, you can apply for titles, conduct land searches, and receive results from the comfort of your home,” he said.

“The system eliminates the opacity in land transactions and is set to attract more investors, contributing to economic growth.”

The governor praised his team for their hard work in digitizing land documents, some of which date back to the colonial era when Enugu administered much of Southern Nigeria, except Lagos.

Barr. Chimaobi Okorie, the Commissioner for Lands and Urban Development, and Dr. Cyril Ezeama, Coordinator of ENGIS, further explained that the system would enhance revenue generation for the state.

Ezeama noted that the project was designed not only to streamline land registration but also to address revenue leakage and potentially contribute up to N300 billion annually to Enugu’s internally generated revenue (IGR).

“This system will allow land applications and searches to be initiated and completed entirely online, making the process seamless and convenient,” Ezeama added.

Governor Mbah’s digital transformation initiative received widespread support, with key stakeholders, including the Speaker of the Enugu State House of Assembly, Hon. Uche Ugwu, Igwe Samuel Asadu (Chairman of the Enugu State Traditional Rulers Council), and leaders of professional associations such as the Nigeria Bar Association, Institute of Surveyors, and Institute of Town Planners, praising the project.

They pledged their support for the governor’s development agenda, which they believe will help position Enugu State as a top destination for business and investment.

Benin’s Electoral Body Seeks INEC’s Expertise Ahead of 2026 Elections

The Autonomous National Electoral Commission (CENA) of Benin has reached out to Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for support and guidance as it prepares for its most significant electoral challenge in 2026.

A 12-member delegation from CENA, led by its President, Sacca Lafia, arrived in Abuja on Monday for a study visit to INEC.

Their goal is to gain insights into Nigeria’s electoral processes to help manage Benin’s upcoming elections, which will include legislative and local elections in January 2026, followed by the presidential election in April 2026.

During the visit, INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu expressed Nigeria’s readiness to assist Benin in its preparations.

He explained that CENA had officially requested a study visit in early November to understand Nigeria’s approach to elections, particularly as Benin will conduct three major elections within a span of just three months.

“The legislative and local elections are scheduled for January 2026, followed by the presidential election in April 2026. This will be the first time in Benin’s history that the commission will oversee three elections in such a short period. As a result, CENA’s delegation, consisting of national commissioners, directors, and key staff, is here to learn about our processes,” Yakubu stated.

Yakubu outlined the areas in which CENA seeks guidance, including Nigeria’s legal framework for elections, the design and printing of election materials, recruitment and training of poll officials, budgeting, security arrangements, the use of technology, the accreditation of observers, and the overall engagement with electoral stakeholders.

He assured CENA of INEC’s willingness to share its experience, noting that such partnerships help strengthen electoral systems across Africa.

Lafia expressed gratitude for INEC’s hospitality and emphasized the importance of the visit.

“The President has mandated us to conduct three elections within three months in 2026, and this study visit is crucial to ensuring we succeed. We are confident that the knowledge we gain here will contribute significantly to our success,” Lafia said.

Tinubu Reschedules 2025 Budget Presentation To Wednesday

The presentation of the 2025 Appropriation Bill to the National Assembly by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been postponed to Wednesday, December 18, 2024.

This change was confirmed by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, following the Federal Executive Council meeting, which was chaired by President Tinubu. Idris explained that ongoing discussions had led to the rescheduling of the budget presentation.

Previously, Senate President Godswill Akpabio had announced during last week’s plenary that the budget would be presented on Tuesday, December 17, 2024.

He stated, “His Excellency, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, has indicated his intention to bring the 2025 budget proposals and estimates to a joint sitting of the National Assembly on the 17th of December, 2024, at 11:00am prompt, at the House of Representatives.”

However, sources within the National Assembly later informed newsmen that the presentation had been postponed, though no specific reason for the delay was provided.

The usual preparations for the President’s arrival appeared minimal, with only a few additional security vehicles observed around the National Assembly.

A lawmaker, who had initially confirmed the Tuesday presentation, later shared an update indicating the new date: “President Bola Tinubu’s proposed ₦47.9 trillion 2025 budget presentation has been postponed from Tuesday, December 17, 2024, to Wednesday, December 18, 2024.”

A clerk from one of the National Assembly committees also verified that a circular had been issued regarding the change in schedule.

Deposed Syrian President, Al-assad Finally Breaks Silence

Bashar al-Assad has broken his silence since being ousted, declaring that Syria is now under the control of terrorism.

In his first public statement, Assad revealed that his departure from the country was not premeditated, and was instead a result of a request from Moscow for his evacuation amid an attack on a military base.

Assad’s statement, shared via the ousted president’s Telegram channel, explained that he had been moved to Latakia earlier on December 8.

However, by that evening, Russia called for his immediate evacuation to Russia.

He also remarked that, with terrorism taking over the state and the ability to contribute effectively diminishing, any political role became meaningless.

Herdsmen Attack Enugu Community, Destroy Rice Farms

A group of armed herdsmen on Saturday, launched a violent attack on the rice-farming community of Oji-egu in Obinagu Uwani Akpugo, Nkanu West Local Government Area, Enugu State.

The attackers, wielding machetes, stormed the farmlands around 3 pm and began destroying crops, including a 35-hectare rice farm owned by prominent farmers Ekene Uzodinma and Nathaniel Ogbuka.

During the chaos, local farmer, Maduabuchi Onah was injured by a machete wound, and Chidera Nwankwo, a young lady, narrowly escaped being stabbed to death by the herdsmen.

Despite the violence, the workers on the farm bravely fought back and were able to overpower the attackers.

In the process, they captured one of the herdsmen and seized one of the cows.

DAILY GAZETTE gathered that the captured herdsman and the seized cow were handed over to the Agbani Police Station, where they are currently being detained.

Uzodinma, one of the farm owners, expressed gratitude for the workers’ bravery and urged the authorities to take swift action against the perpetrators.

“We are thankful that our workers were able to defend themselves and apprehend one of the attackers. We call on the authorities to ensure justice and improve security in our community,” he said.

2027: Lukman Urges Obasanjo, Gowon, Babangida, Abdulsalami, Jonathan To Unite Opposition Against Tinubu

Salihu Lukman, a former National Vice Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Northwest, has called on former President Olusegun Obasanjo to rally together other past Nigerian leaders in forming a united political front to challenge President Bola Tinubu and the APC in the 2027 general elections.

Lukman’s plea follows Obasanjo’s recent comments in a December 8 newspaper interview, where he was quoted saying, “A leader made by Satan is bound to fail, while God’s chosen one will thrive.”

Lukman argues that to ensure Nigeria produces godly leaders free from what he terms “satanic genotypes,” Obasanjo and other past leaders, including Generals Yakubu Gowon, Muhammadu Buhari, Ibrahim Babangida, Abdulsalami Abubakar, and former President Goodluck Jonathan, have a moral responsibility to unite the opposition and form a new, functional political party.

In his open letter to Obasanjo, Lukman emphasized the urgency of such efforts, stating, “It is not enough to lament the presence of Satanic leadership in the country. Unless past leaders like you assert their moral authority, we risk perpetuating the current cycle of failed leadership under President Tinubu.”

He further warned that as long as Nigerian politics remains fragmented and reduced to serving personal ambitions, the country would continue to be led by leaders with questionable motives, whether they emerge from new or existing parties.

Lukman reflected on the potential of the APC in 2015, suggesting it was ultimately undermined by internal divisions and impunity.

Lukman pointed out the risks of the opposition’s fragmented efforts, citing resistance from some opposition leaders who are focused on their personal ambitions, hindering the formation of a cohesive and strategic political force.

He also noted the emergence of regional and ethnic divides, along with the involvement of influential figures allegedly financing such divisions, as signs of a growing threat to genuine political reform.

Lukman concluded that any political leader who resists collaboration with others in the opposition is unwittingly aiding the APC’s chances of victory in the upcoming election.

He stressed that those seeking power at all costs, without regard for the country’s future, were contributing to a political system dominated by “Satanic” leaders.

Having distanced himself from the APC following the 2023 elections, Lukman remained firm in his belief that the party’s strategy revolves around maintaining divisions within the opposition.

He urged Obasanjo and other former leaders to act quickly to unite the opposition and foster a viable political alternative for Nigeria in 2027.
