School Proprietor Jailed For Calling Parent a Prostitute

Paul Okugbowa, the proprietor of Calvary Crown Academy in Benin City, has been sentenced to six months in prison for publicly calling the mother of one of his pupils a prostitute.

Chief Magistrate Caroline Oghuma delivered the verdict and also sentenced three teachers from the school to varying prison terms for negligence.

The four defendants were arraigned on charges under Sections 167(2), 412, 270, 412, and 267 of the Criminal Laws of Edo 2022.

In her ruling, Magistrate Oghuma offered Okugbowa the option of paying a fine of N100,000 as an alternative to imprisonment.

The three teachers—Blessing Osarodion, Egharevba Esosa, and Isioma Nimen—were found guilty of negligence for abandoning two pupils in their care.

Osarodion and Esosa were sentenced to one year in prison or a N100,000 fine for two counts of negligence, which resulted in the injury of a 6-year-old pupil, Salma Aigbudu.

Nimen was sentenced to three months in prison or a fine of N50,000 for unlawfully abandoning another pupil, Zuri Aigbudu.

The incident that led to Okugbowa’s conviction took place on September 8, 2023, at the AIG Zone 5 headquarters in Benin City.

Okugbowa was accused of publicly calling Mrs. Blessing Aigbudu, the mother of the two pupils, a prostitute in front of her husband and onlookers, causing a disturbance.

Judiciary Corruption Dominates Discussions At Enugu NBA Law Week

Corruption within Nigeria’s judiciary, involving both the Bar and the Bench, took center stage at the 2024 Law Week of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Enugu branch, held on Tuesday.

Although the theme of the conference was “Good Governance and Socio-Economic Stability: The Imperative of the Rule of Law in Nigeria,” the discussion quickly turned to allegations of corruption among lawyers and judges.

This shift in focus prompted noticeable discomfort among the judicial officers and senior lawyers present at the event, which was held at the Justice Innocent Umezulike Auditorium in the Enugu State High Court Complex.

Attendees included prominent figures such as the Chief Judges of Enugu and Ebonyi States, Justices A.R. Ozoemena and Elvis Anagu Ngene, along with other judges of the Enugu State High Court. Senior legal professionals, including Mrs. Justina Offia (SAN), Prof. Joy Ezeilo (SAN), the state Attorney General, Dr. Kingsley Udeh, and NBA Enugu chairman Chief Venatus Odo, were also in attendance.

The keynote lecture was delivered by Justice Peter Obiorah of the Court of Appeal, Abuja Division, who spoke on “Law Practice: The Lawyer in the Center of Judicial Corruption – The Urgent Need for Practice Reforms.”

In his address, Justice Obiorah emphasized that lawyers must uphold the highest ethical standards, free from deceit, fraud, and dishonesty, both in their professional duties and personal conduct.

The Judge acknowledged that while many corruption allegations against judicial officers are baseless, there are undeniable instances or perceptions of corruption within the system.

He highlighted that in many cases, lawyers, particularly senior lawyers, are often implicated as intermediaries in corrupt practices, with litigants attempting to bribe judges or magistrates through their counsel.

Justice Obiorah called on the NBA and other judicial stakeholders to introduce and enforce stricter ethical guidelines for lawyers, urging the National Judicial Council (NJC) to address judicial misconduct more seriously.

Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mrs. Justina Offia, also contributed to the discussion, providing examples of unethical practices among lawyers.

She highlighted how some lawyers, aware that they have weak cases, resort to unethical tactics like falsely accusing judges of bias or conflicts of interest to disqualify them from hearing the case.

NBA Enugu Chairman, Chief Venatus Odo, remarked that the law week presented an opportunity for lawyers to reflect on their professional conduct and the state of their society.

He stressed that the theme of the conference underscored the dangers of poor regulation in legal practice and questioned whether current governance has fulfilled its fundamental responsibility to ensure the security and welfare of the people.

Prof. Joy Ezeilo (SAN), the chairperson of the Law Week, emphasized that access to justice is crucial for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and fostering inclusive growth.

However, she pointed out that many Nigerians remain marginalized and without legal protection, primarily due to poverty and other forms of social exclusion.

The High Court of the Federal Capital Territory has directed an investigation into the spending of funds allocated to 17 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Abia State from 2019 to 2023.

Justice Bello Kawu issued the order for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to deposit a Certified True Copy (CTC) of its investigation report or a detailed account of the funds allocated to the LGAs during this period.

The EFCC was also instructed to provide this information to the court’s Registry.

Additionally, the court ordered the seizure of international travel documents belonging to three former officials of the Abia State government.

The individuals affected are Rt. Hon. Prince Christopher Enweremadu, former Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters; Erondu Uchenna Erondu, former aide to the state’s immediate past governor; and Deaconess Joy Nwanju, the former Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters.

These individuals are named as the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Defendants in the case, filed by activist Chidiebere Ojukwu, who is advocating for transparency in public fund management.

The case, marked FCT/HC/CV/4961/2024, was brought before the court through an ex-parte application filed by Ojukwu.

The EFCC is listed as the 4th Defendant in the matter.

In addition to the investigation order, the court approved an expedited hearing and requested the defendants to produce specific documents.

These include a list of all companies they hold an interest in, as well as records such as company registration documents, audited financial statements from 2019 to the present, and tax clearance certificates.

The court also requested a list of their bank account details, both domestic and foreign, and information on any properties they own, both in Nigeria and abroad.

The court directed that these orders be served on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Defendants through the Abia State Liaison Office in Abuja.

Justice Kawu scheduled the next hearing for Monday, December 9, and ordered that all related processes be served on the EFCC.

The Plaintiff, Ojukwu, is seeking a determination of whether the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Defendants are personally liable to refund to the Abia State Government any excess funds, amounting to over five hundred billion naira, that were allocated to the 17 LGAs between May 29, 2019, and May 29, 2023, from the Federation Account and Consolidated Revenue Fund.

Farotimi’s Book ‘Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System’ Becomes Amazon Bestseller Amid Defamation Controversy

Dele Farotimi’s book, Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System, has skyrocketed to bestseller status on Amazon, following the author’s recent arrest tied to a defamation complaint filed by Nigerian lawyer and businessman Afe Babalola.

According to a report by Vanguard, the book surged to the top of Amazon’s bestseller list on Thursday evening.

A bestseller is defined as a book or product that sells in exceptionally high volumes.

The surge in popularity on global platforms like Amazon was mirrored by a rush to bookstores across Nigeria, as citizens clamored to explore the controversial content within Farotimi’s book.

The author’s arrest on Tuesday, reportedly influenced by Babalola’s petition, significantly heightened public interest.

Babalola, 93, claims that Farotimi’s book falsely accuses him of corrupting Nigeria’s judiciary.

The book, published in July 2024, critiques widespread corruption in Nigeria’s legal system and highlights alleged unethical actions by legal professionals.

Although initial sales of the book were relatively low, the attention surrounding Farotimi’s arrest sparked a dramatic rise in its popularity, propelling it to bestseller status.

Farotimi was detained by armed police officers in Lagos on Tuesday and subsequently transported to Ado Ekiti, about 300 kilometers northeast of Lagos, where Babalola holds significant influence.

The following day, Farotimi was arraigned in Ekiti, and a judge ordered his remand until a bail hearing set for December 10.

Afe Babalola Breaks Silence On Farotimi’s Arrest, Detention

Prominent Senior Advocate of Nigeria and founder of Afe Babalola University, Aare Afe Babalola, has finally spoken out regarding the arrest of human rights lawyer, Dele Farotimi.

Babalola accuses Farotimi of defaming him in a recently released book.

The controversy originates from a Supreme Court ruling in a long-standing land dispute.

In a formal petition submitted to the Ekiti State Commissioner of Police, Adeniran Akinwale, Babalola outlined the circumstances surrounding Farotimi’s book, Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System, which he claims contains defamatory statements about him.

According to Babalola, the book questions his personal integrity and accuses his law firm of engaging in unethical practices, including undermining the judiciary.

Furthermore, the book alleges that Babalola had “corrupted the Supreme Court from ages past and had led it to commit the most egregious acts of evil and wanting injustice.”

The petition, dated November 19, reads:
“I write to report the criminal defamation of myself, my law firm Afe Babalola & Co and my lawyers in person of Olu Daramola SAN and Ola Faro by one Dele Farotimi in his book titled ‘NIGERIA AND ITS CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM’ published by Dele Farotimi publishers in respect of Suit no: SC/146/2005: Major Muritala Gbadamosi Eletu & Ors V. H.R.H Oba Tijani Akinloye & Ors.”

Babalola explained that on November 2, 2024, one of his lawyers, while passing through Murtala Muhammed Airport, bought Farotimi’s book.

After reading it, the lawyer immediately brought the matter to his attention.

Other lawyers in his firm also purchased the book and confirmed the defamatory nature of its contents.

The petition further details the defamatory statements as follows:
“That Aare Afe Babalola corrupted the Supreme Court to procure a fraudulent judgement in the service of his client.”
“That Aare Afe Babalola, Olu Daramola, Olu Faro and the law offices of Afe Babalola & Co, (Emmanuel Chambers) compromised the Supreme Court and the remaining semblance of integrity it might have had when they went back to the Supreme Court and got the Court to swim in the sewer of corruption and shameful self-Abnegation.”

ASUU Warns FG Against Phasing Out TETFund For NELFUND, Says It Poses Threat To Public Universities

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a stern warning to the Federal Government against phasing out the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) in favor of the newly proposed Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), cautioning that such a move could severely harm Nigeria’s public university system.

In an interview on Thursday, ASUU President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, emphasized the vital role TETFund has played in improving tertiary education in Nigeria for over three decades.

He stated, “Eliminating TETFund would devastate public universities and limit educational access for children from lower-income families.”

ASUU expressed concern that the proposed Tax Reform Bills under President Bola Tinubu’s administration could dilute TETFund’s funding by merging it with other agencies like NITDA and NASENI, and redirecting its resources to NELFUND.

The union criticized the government’s lack of consultation with stakeholders before drafting the legislation, describing it as an undemocratic move.

“TETFund is the result of our struggle as educators. The government cannot dismantle it without engaging those who understand its value,” Osodeke said.

Instead of using TETFund’s revenue for NELFUND, ASUU urged the government to seek alternative funding sources, such as a percentage of Value Added Tax (VAT), to support the new education loan initiative.

While ASUU is not opposed to NELFUND, Osodeke emphasized that the government must find new ways of financing it without dismantling an existing structure that has significantly benefited universities.

He pointed out that 90% of infrastructure in Nigerian universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education are funded by TETFund.

ASUU also expressed skepticism about the long-term viability of NELFUND, which offers student loans, warning that such a scheme could burden students already struggling with rising tuition fees.

“Many students are dropping out due to high fees, and student loans will only further entrench inequality, making education a privilege instead of a right,” Osodeke cautioned.

The union urged the government to preserve TETFund’s legacy, which has inspired similar initiatives in other African countries, such as Ghana’s Education Trust Fund (GETFund).

“African nations are learning from TETFund. Scrapping it would be a backward step for Nigeria,” Osodeke argued, calling on the government to prioritize the funding of education in accordance with global standards.

ASUU warned that policies undermining public education could have dire consequences for the nation’s future and urged Nigerians to resist any attempts to weaken the education sector.

“This is not just about ASUU; it’s about the future of Nigeria’s education system and the opportunities it offers to millions of young people,” Osodeke concluded.

PDP Crisis: BoT Slams NWC Over Delayed NEC Meeting, Plans January Talks With Wike, Orders North Central To Nominate Ayu’s Successor

The Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has sharply criticized the Umar Damagum-led National Working Committee (NWC) for its repeated postponements of the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting.

Senator Adolphus Wabara, Chairman of the BoT, expressed concerns during an emergency meeting of the body in Abuja on Thursday, highlighting the ongoing leadership struggles within the party.

Wabara revealed that the BoT would continue its efforts to resolve the crisis by engaging former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike in a planned meeting in January, seeking to restore unity in the party.

Wike, a key figure in the PDP’s current turmoil, has been at the center of the crisis following the removal of Senator Iyorchia Ayu as National Chairman by the court.

Since Damagum assumed the role of acting National Chairman, there have been increasing calls for his resignation amid growing dissatisfaction from party leaders.

The party’s leadership initially set August 15 for the 99th NEC meeting, which has since been rescheduled multiple times and is now indefinitely postponed.

The PDP Governors’ Forum, under the leadership of Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, has called for the NEC meeting to be convened no later than February.

Wabara expressed disappointment over the repeated delays, stressing that they undermine the confidence of party members and hinder the party’s ability to move forward.

“The delay in convening the NEC meeting is damaging to the trust and unity of the party. The BoT has a responsibility to ensure the integrity of the PDP, and we expect the NWC to adhere to its commitments,” Wabara said, emphasizing the importance of adhering to timelines for resolving critical issues.

The former Senate President pointed out that the PDP’s strength lies in unity and adherence to democratic principles, calling for action to avoid further discord.

He also warned that further delays could deepen existing challenges within the party, urging the NWC to take swift action.

Externally, Wabara criticized the economic policies of the Tinubu administration, which he claimed have worsened the plight of Nigerians.

He called on the PDP to present itself as a credible alternative, advocating for policies of fairness and prosperity.

He also underlined the importance of internal unity, calling on members to put aside personal ambitions and focus on the collective vision for a better Nigeria.

Wabara expressed the BoT’s commitment to peace and unity, beginning with a renewed effort to engage Wike and seek a resolution to the party’s internal divisions.

Catastrophe Averted As Borno Deputy Governor, Over 100 Passengers Survive Plane Incident

Borno State Deputy Governor, Umar Kadafur, along with over 100 other passengers, narrowly escaped a potentially deadly incident when a Max Air flight experienced an engine fire shortly after taking off from Maiduguri International Airport.

The incident occurred around 7 p.m. on Wednesday, as the aircraft was heading to Abuja. About 10 minutes into the flight, the plane encountered engine failure due to a bird strike.

Quick thinking from the pilot and crew allowed for an emergency return to Maiduguri Airport, preventing a possible catastrophe.

A Max Air employee, who preferred to remain anonymous, confirmed the details of the incident the following morning.

The employee stated, “The aircraft struck a bird shortly after takeoff, which led to one of the engines catching fire. The pilot responded rapidly to ensure the safety of all passengers on board.”

Following the emergency landing, passengers were reportedly shaken, with many opting to collect their luggage and leave the airport instead of boarding another flight.

However, Max Air management swiftly arranged for another aircraft from Kano to transport the deputy governor and other passengers safely to Abuja.

In addition to the deputy governor, the flight also carried several government officials, including a commissioner, special advisers, and senior special assistants.

The affected aircraft has been grounded at Maiduguri International Airport for repairs, while investigations into the cause of the incident are underway.

Airport authorities have assured passengers that safety remains a top priority and commended the flight crew for their professionalism in managing the emergency.
