EFCC Arrests Former Delta Governor Over Alleged Diversion Of N1.3 Trillion

Advertorial

Ifeanyi Okowa, the former governor of Delta State and vice presidential candidate in the last general elections, has been arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for allegedly misappropriating N1.3 trillion.

This sum is reportedly linked to the 13% derivation fund from the federation account during his tenure from 2015 to 2023.

Advertorial

Sources within the EFCC revealed that Okowa was apprehended after he reported to the agency’s Port Harcourt office.

The arrest followed a series of invitations from a specialized investigative team that was examining his financial activities while in office.

According to insiders, Okowa’s detention was prompted by his inability to provide satisfactory explanations regarding alleged financial misconduct.

Advertorial

He is also accused of failing to account for the aforementioned funds, as well as an additional N40 billion, which he claimed was used for acquiring shares in UTM Floating Liquefied Natural Gas.

Specifically, Okowa is alleged to have invested N40 billion in a major bank, securing 8% equity in the offshore LNG project.

EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale confirmed Okowa’s presence at the agency but refrained from commenting further on the matter.

During the flag-off ceremony held in Enugu, Governor Mbah emphasized his commitment to completing the state-of-the-art facility, which targets a share of the over $1 billion annual medical tourism market.

He noted that discussions are already underway with health professionals in the diaspora regarding collaborative efforts in the state’s healthcare sector.

The governor encouraged more healthcare practitioners and investors to view Enugu as an attractive destination for business, promising favorable returns on investment.

“The Enugu International Hospital will be outfitted with top-tier facilities, and we plan to attract leading professionals to work here,” he stated, inviting expatriates to return home to utilize the modern infrastructure.

Governor Mbah reiterated that the hospital will offer advanced medical services, research opportunities, and training, thus addressing the healthcare needs that drive many to seek treatment overseas.

He pointed out that the administration has invested significantly in primary, secondary, and tertiary healthcare, including the construction of 260 type-2 primary healthcare centers and upgrades to 22 general hospitals statewide.

Advertorial

“The facility will not only serve patients but will also function as a training and research center for medical students from local universities, ensuring access to world-class healthcare.”

Prof. Ikechukwu Obi, the state’s Commissioner for Health, commended the governor’s initiatives in the healthcare sector, highlighting the ongoing improvements across various healthcare facilities in Enugu.

The international hospital is expected to provide a wide range of services, including emergency care, surgical services, gynecology, intensive care, cardiology, oncology, neurology, and more.

MAGA Republicans Demand Equal Time For Trump After Kamala Harris’s SNL Appearance

Advertorial

MAGA Republicans are calling for equal airtime for Donald Trump following Kamala Harris’s surprise appearance on Saturday Night Live over the weekend, despite the former president already receiving equal coverage shortly after her segment.

Brandon Carr, a Trump appointee and Federal Communications Commissioner, raised concerns on Saturday regarding Harris’s unexpected cameo, which was announced just hours before the show aired.

Advertorial

In a post on X, Carr claimed her appearance was a “clear and blatant effort to evade the FCC’s Equal Time rule.”

He stated, “The purpose of the rule is to avoid exactly this type of biased and partisan conduct—a licensed broadcaster using the public airwaves to exert its influence for one candidate on the eve of an election, unless the broadcaster offered Equal Time to other qualifying campaigns.”

When Trump hosted SNL in 2015, his appearance triggered the Equal Time rule, resulting in NBC providing his opponents with 12 minutes of free airtime on its affiliate stations.

Advertorial

Following Harris’s appearance, Trump was offered the same opportunity, airing a brief 60-second message after a NASCAR race on Sunday, as reported by CNN.

But according to FCC filings, Harris received approximately 30 seconds of airtime “without charge,”

This response did not quell the outrage from MAGA supporters, who believe Trump deserves a spot on SNL.

Advertorial

Florida Senator Marco Rubio criticized Harris’s appearance as part of a “full-scale assault” designed to “depress and suppress Republican votes,” claiming it violated the law.

Rubio stated, “I hope she laughed on Saturday Night Live in front of millions of people, because that’s probably worth two to three million votes right there.”

On Fox News’s Mornings with Maria, Carr suggested that the FCC might consider “license revocation” if Harris’s appearance is deemed “egregious,” reiterating that the Equal Time rule is meant to ensure fairness for all candidates.

Advertorial

Elon Musk also amplified claims that Harris’s appearance was illegal (it was not) and alleged that SNL had interfered in the election by performing a skit to boost the name recognition of Virginia Senator Tim Kaine.

The implication was that Kaine’s race against Republican candidate Hung Cao was tightening, with one poll showing his lead shrinking from 9-14 points to just two.

Court Orders Enugu Police Commissioner, DSP To Pay N20m For Violating Suspect’s Right To Life

An Enugu State High Court, presided over by Justice C.O. Ajah, has ordered the state Commissioner of Police and Deputy Superintendent of Police, Chidobe Ekeleme to pay the sum of N20 million for violating the right to life of the late Chika Chukwu Onwe.

The ruling stems from the murder of Onwe while in police custody, which occurred without trial and in a manner that lacked due process.

Advertorial

Onwe was arrested in 2019, along with Izuchukwu Ani, at Agbani during a police operation following a cult clash, with suspicions of their involvement in a secret society.

They were taken to the anti-cult police unit, where they were detained and denied bail.

From the time of their arrest, Onwe and Ani were neither presented in court for trial nor granted access to their families.

Plaintiffs’ counsel, Mr. Chukwunonso Ogbe informed the court that Onwe’s mother, Confidence Nkechi, and uncle, Anayo Ume, made numerous attempts to obtain information about his whereabouts, all of which were unsuccessful.

“They were continually rebuffed by the police,” he stated.

In pursuit of justice for Onwe, his family escalated the matter to the state’s Police Brutality and Extra-Judicial Killing unit.

Advertorial

However, they noted that the findings of the panel have remained confidential.

In his ruling, Justice Ajah concluded that the ongoing disappearance of Onwe following his arrest constituted a violation of the right to life, as protected under Section 33(1) of the Nigerian Constitution.

He ordered the police to produce Onwe, dead or alive, without further delay.

Advertorial

Additionally, the court mandated the police to issue a written apology to Onwe’s mother, Nkechi, and publish same in two national newspapers for violating the young man’s right to life.

Prof. Odoh’s Appointment As Vice Chancellor Followed Due Process – UNIZIK Insists

Office of the Vice-Chancellor, Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, Anambra State, has urged the public to disregard a letter reportedly from the Federal Ministry of Education, which claims that the appointment of Prof. Bernard Odoh as the university’s Vice-Chancellor has been annulled.

Last Tuesday, the university’s Governing Council announced Odoh, a Professor of Geophysics, as the seventh substantive Vice-Chancellor after a successful interview on the same day.

Advertorial

However, a letter circulated in the media, purportedly signed by Mrs. R.G. Ilyasu on behalf of the Permanent Secretary, stated that Odoh’s appointment was “null and void,” asserting that the process did not adhere to due process.

In response, Charles Otu, the Personal Assistant on Media and Publicity to the Vice-Chancellor, issued a statement on Monday emphasizing that all procedures were followed during Odoh’s appointment.

Advertorial

Otu explained that under Nigerian law, the Ministry of Education oversees educational standards but does not have the authority to dictate the daily operations of a university’s council, including appointments of Vice-Chancellors.

The statement included, “The institution has rightly stated that all its actions were informed and conform with the statutory requirements set forth in the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Act, Cap 139 (as amended), LFN 2004.”

Advertorial

He noted that the Registrar, who also serves as the Secretary to the council, confirmed that the council’s actions adhered to the quorum requirements mandated by the Nnamdi Azikiwe Standing Orders.

“The registrar had also, in response to allegations of violations of due process, clarified that due process was meticulously observed throughout the appointment for both the Vice-Chancellor and the Registrar.”

He emphasized that the governing council operates as an “autonomous governing body” capable of making independent decisions that align with the university’s best interests.

Advertorial

Otu added, “Already, the appointment, which for now has not been expressly faulted by any law of our land, appears to be breeding some bad blood and unsettling the nerves of some possible big spenders among our Igbo brothers, including some fifth columnists suspected in the nation’s ruling party.”

He called on all parties involved to prioritize peace and urged the public to disregard any false documents suggesting the actions of the UNIZIK governing council were nullified.

Additionally, the statement announced that a “mass service shall be held on Tuesday, November 5, 2024, as part of activities for the resumption of office of the Seventh Substantive Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Professor Bernard Ifeanyi Odoh,” inviting members of the public to witness the events marking his first day in office.
