Hunger: Police Vow To Enforce Court-Ordered Protest Restrictions

The police have committed to enforcing a court order that restricts protests to specific areas during the planned nationwide demonstrations.

Daily Gazette reports that many Nigerians, particularly young people, have organized protests starting August 1 due to rising costs, despite government attempts to address the issue.

Advertorial

Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, met with some of the protest organizers, urging them to confine their demonstrations to designated areas, but the organizers rejected this proposal.

As the protests approached, courts in various states, including Kwara, Ogun, Lagos, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), issued orders confining the protesters to specific venues.

Advertorial

In Lagos, Police Public Relations Officer SP Benjamin Hundeyin stated that the order would be enforced.

“The command has received an order from a court of competent jurisdiction restricting peaceful public protest, rallies, procession and meetings to Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Park, Ikorodu Road, Ojota Lagos and Peace Park, Ketu, Lagos from 8 am to 6 pm on 1st – 10th August, 2024. The Nigeria Police Force, as a law enforcement agency, shall duly enforce this order,” Hundeyin said.

The police assured that maximum security would be provided at the designated locations and urged protesters to comply with the security arrangements to prevent any breakdown of law and order or hijacking of the protests.

Residents were also advised to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station.

Court Restrains PDP National Legal Adviser From Interfering In Rivers Dispute

A Federal High Court in Port Harcourt has prohibited the National Legal Adviser of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) from appearing in a case that seeks to declare the seats of 27 lawmakers who defected from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC) vacant.

Advertorial

The ruling was delivered in suit No. FHC/PH/CS/90/2024, involving Hon. Victor Oko Jumbo and two others versus Hon. Martins Chike Amaewhule and 28 others.

The case was transferred from FHC 4, presided over by Justice Steven Dalyop Pam, to Court 2, overseen by Justice E.O. Obele.

The decision by Justice Obele followed a challenge by National Legal Adviser Kamaldeen Ajibade against the authority of the State Legal Adviser to appoint Joshua Musa as legal representation in the suit.

Advertorial

The ruling aligns with a previous Federal High Court decision in Abuja (Ambassador Desmond Akawo v. Peoples Democratic Party & 2 ORS, Suit No PHC/ABJ/CS/112/2023), which confirmed the State Legal Adviser’s authority to appoint legal counsel at the state level as per Article 46(1) of the PDP Constitution.

Justice Obele declared that National Legal Adviser Ajibade did not have the authority to direct Joshua Musa, appointed by State Legal Adviser Barr. Kingsley Chukwu, to withdraw from the case.

Advertorial

He emphasized that Legal Advisers at different levels possess equal legal powers and that the National Legal Adviser cannot handle PDP cases at the state level.

Consequently, Ajibade’s motion and application as the 30th defendant were struck out.

Additionally, the court issued an injunction preventing the National Legal Adviser from interfering with the State Legal Adviser’s duties on behalf of the Rivers State PDP chapter.

Advertorial

This decision was based on Article 46(1) of the PDP Constitution, which grants the State Legal Adviser the same authority as the National Legal Adviser as outlined in Article 42.

The injunction ensures that the State Legal Adviser can perform their functions without obstruction.

All processes filed by Ajibade were struck out, and the court awarded ₦100,000 in costs to Joshua Musa.

The case was adjourned until October 16 for the adoption of processes filed in the originating summons.

In a related case (suit No. FHC/PH/269/2023), filed by members of the Because Of Our Tomorrow (BOOT) party against Martin Amaewhule and 25 others, Justice Obele adjourned the hearing on the motion for legal representation to November 4.

Advertorial

This follows an argument by B.R. Gold, SAN, representing the National Legal Adviser of the PDP, asserting his role as the legal representative for the party.

The judge also scheduled a report of service for October 16 in a separate suit filed by the Labour Party against the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, and 28 others.

Guinea Court Sentences Ex-Dictator To 20 Years Imprisonment Over 2009 Massacre

A Guinean court has sentenced ex-dictator Moussa Dadis Camara to 20 years in prison for crimes against humanity related to a 2009 massacre in a Conakry stadium, where more than 150 people were killed and many women were raped.

Advertorial

This historic trial, which lasted nearly two years, concluded with seven other defendants receiving sentences of up to life imprisonment.

The verdict has been welcomed by rights activists and victims’ families who have waited nearly 15 years for justice.

On September 28, 2009, and in the days following, members of Camara’s presidential guard, soldiers, police, and militia violently suppressed an opposition rally, resulting in at least 156 deaths, hundreds of injuries, and 109 rapes, as reported by a UN commission of inquiry.

Advertorial

The court’s decision to classify the charges as crimes against humanity marks a significant move against impunity in Guinea.

The court also mandated compensation for victims, ranging from 200 million to 1.5 billion Guinean francs ($23,000 to $174,000).

During the trial, which began on September 28, 2022, the anniversary of the massacre, the court heard from defendants and around 100 victims who provided harrowing testimonies.

Advertorial

Despite the defense’s claims of being denied a fair trial due to the last-minute reclassification of charges, the court proceeded with its verdict. Both parties have 15 days to appeal the decision.

The trial has occurred amid ongoing repression of opposition and media in Guinea, with recent protests against the disappearance of pro-democracy activists Oumar Sylla and Mamadou Billo Bah leading to clashes with police.

Advertorial

International organizations have emphasized the trial’s significance in challenging the longstanding impunity of Guinea’s security forces.

‘Ensure No Bullet Is Fired Tomorrow’, Adegboruwa Tells Security Agencies

Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), has made a public appeal to Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to ensure the safety of Nigerian youths participating in tomorrow’s protest against hunger and the struggling economy.

Advertorial

In a statement released to Vanguard on Wednesday, Adegboruwa emphasized that security forces must avoid using violence against protesters, stressing that “protesters are our children and our own citizens. They certainly do not deserve bullets and crackdowns.”

Adegboruwa also called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to reconsider the policies of oil subsidy removal and currency devaluation, which he argues have exacerbated the economic crisis in Nigeria.

Advertorial

In his statement, Adegboruwa praised the organizers of the Hunger and End Bad Governance Protests for their dedication and patriotism.

He acknowledged the significant efforts put into organizing the protests and criticized the administration’s response, saying, “Since the announcement of the protests, the administration of President Tinubu has become unduly jittery, pandering to primordial ethnic and religious sentiments, to save face.”

Advertorial

Adegboruwa pointed out the severe food inflation affecting Nigerians, with staples like yam, gaari, rice, and beans becoming unaffordable for many.

He criticized the government’s economic policies, stating, “The economic policies of the Tinubu administration are suffocating the people out of their existence.”

Appeals:

To the President
Adegboruwa urged President Tinubu to address the economic hardships by reversing the oil subsidy removal and currency devaluation policies.

Advertorial

He highlighted the need to curtail government wastage and criticized lavish expenditures such as purchasing a new jet for the President and renovating the Vice-President’s residence for ₦21 billion while ordinary Nigerians suffer.

He called for an end to bad governance, including the distribution of significant funds for religious pilgrimages while providing minimal support to students through loans.

Advertorial

To Security and Law Enforcement Agencies
Adegboruwa’s second appeal was directed at security agencies. He emphasized the legal right to peaceful protest and urged the police to protect unarmed civilians. He insisted that no bullets should be fired, no arbitrary arrests should be made, and the military should not be deployed to handle the protest.

“The protesters are our children and our own citizens. They certainly do not deserve bullets and crackdowns,” he stated.

To the Protesters:

Adegboruwa also addressed the protesters, acknowledging the impact of their actions and the government’s response. He encouraged them to keep the protests orderly and peaceful, and to adhere to the planned locations for their demonstrations. He suggested limiting the protests to one or, at most, three days to facilitate dialogue with the government.

He expressed his support for the protesters, offering to join in further engagements with the government to address their demands. “I have no doubt that you have the capacity to prosecute the protests as intended and that you have the support and prayers of the majority of our people, in all your actions. But let us give room for more dialogue,” he added.

The Need for More Engagements:

Adegboruwa concluded by stressing the importance of continued dialogue with the government. He called on the protest organizers to form teams to engage with various government agents for immediate action on their concerns.

“God bless you all,” Adegboruwa said in his closing remarks, highlighting his appeals for peace, progress, and tranquility in Nigeria.
