Your tax policies have placed a heavy burden on Enugu residents, driving businesses away – Edeoga tells Mbah

Barrister Chijioke Edeoga, the Labour Party’s 2023 governorship candidate in Enugu State, has called on Governor Peter Mbah to reassess the state’s tax policies, which he argues have placed a heavy burden on both residents and businesses.

In an open letter issued on Sunday, Edeoga criticized the current tax regime, urging the governor to reduce what he describes as excessive levies that are reportedly straining the economy and driving businesses away from Enugu.

Edeoga’s letter, titled “Heavy and Multiple Taxes: Have Mercy on the People of Enugu State,” outlines various tax increases under Mbah’s administration, alleging that these changes have led to significant financial hardship.

He cited specific examples such as increases in tenement tax for residential and commercial properties, higher fees for private schools, and elevated daily taxes for public transport vehicles.

He also raised concerns about what he sees as double taxation, such as purchase taxes on groceries and factory products, which are already subject to VAT.

Edeoga argued that these practices not only strain individual taxpayers but also undermine business viability.

Referencing the principles of taxation established by economist Adam Smith—fairness, certainty, convenience, and efficiency—Edeoga contended that the current tax system fails to meet these criteria.

He suggested that the tax burden imposed on residents and businesses is excessive and unjust.

Edeoga further expressed concern that the current tax policies may be driven by political motives, comparing them to historical grievances like the Aba Women’s Riot of 1929, which was sparked by unfair taxation practices.

The Labour Party leader appealed to Governor Mbah to reconsider the tax regime, taking into account the economic pressures faced by residents and businesses, and to adjust policies to foster economic growth and fairness in the state.

Fuel Hike: Commercial Drivers Rush To Lagos Centres For CNG Vehicle Conversions

In response to the rising cost of petrol, commercial drivers in Lagos have begun converting their vehicles from petroleum-powered engines to compressed natural gas (CNG) engines at various conversion centres across the state.

This initiative follows the distribution of conversion kits by the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGi), aimed at mitigating the impact of high fuel prices.

Advertorial

The first phase of the program targets the conversion of over 10,000 vehicles nationwide, with commercial drivers being encouraged to take advantage of free vehicle conversions at designated centres.

In Lagos, six centres, including the Portland Conversion Centre in Ojota, have seen a surge in participation from taxi and bus drivers, particularly members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW).

Advertorial

One driver, Ayodele Jeleel from the NURTW Mile 12 branch, expressed his satisfaction with the initiative, stating that drivers who converted their vehicles were now spending as little as ₦5,000 to ₦6,000 on gas, compared to ₦40,000 to ₦45,000 daily on petrol.

He pledged to reduce transportation fares after converting his vehicle to CNG.

Another driver, Alhaji Saliu Umar, also highlighted the benefits of CNG, noting the relief it would bring amid skyrocketing petrol prices.

“CNG is very cheap, and it will allow us to reduce transportation costs for the masses,” he said.

Advertorial

At the Ojota centre, technicians explained that it takes about four hours to convert a vehicle using a team of engineers and electricians.

Chief Operating Officer of Portland Gas Limited, Michelle Ejiofor, emphasized the environmental and financial benefits of CNG, explaining that cleaner emissions and lower transportation costs could positively impact food prices and the overall cost of living.

The centre has received 50 conversion kits, and the first 50 commercial vehicles will be converted free of charge on a first-come, first-served basis.

Currently, over 30 vehicles are awaiting conversion at the facility.

Commercial Operations Manager at PCNGi, Omoh Imoukhuede, reiterated the permanence of the CNG program, confirming that 10,000 conversion kits have been deployed nationwide, with Lagos being one of the first locations.

“CNG is here to stay,” Imoukhuede stated, adding that the initiative is expected to greatly benefit mass transit and commercial vehicles in the long term.

Labour Party Demands Postponement Of Anambra LG Polls, Labels Process ‘A Sham’

The Labour Party (LP) in Anambra State has called on Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo to direct the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC) to reschedule the local government elections set for September 28, 2024.

The party argued that postponing the election would allow for a more lawful and transparent process, describing the current arrangement as an “unacceptable sham.”

Advertorial

During a press conference in Awka on Saturday, LP’s State Publicity Secretary, Engr Theo Egbe, emphasized that the party neither sold nomination forms nor conducted primaries to field candidates for the elections.

Egbe further accused ANSIEC of publishing names of candidates aligned with the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) as Labour Party candidates, without LP’s involvement.

“The so-called election is a sham. They have already conducted it in their rooms and are just waiting to announce the results,” Egbe remarked.

Advertorial

Adding to the concerns, LP’s State Secretary, Barr Okoli Akirika, highlighted the irregularities, comparing the situation to the emergence of “unknown candidates,” similar to the “unknown bishops” and “unknown gunmen” referenced in past incidents.

“The names published as Labour Party candidates are not our members, and we did not sponsor them. We have made it clear that we are not participating in this election,” Akirika stressed.

PDP Accuses Presidency Of Plotting To Rig Edo Governorship Election

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the Presidency of orchestrating a plot to rig the upcoming governorship election in Edo State, scheduled for September 21, in favor of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

According to a statement from Anthony Aziegbemi, the PDP’s Chairman in Edo State, the Presidency has allegedly allocated $2 million to compromise Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officials, security forces, and to facilitate vote-buying.

Advertorial

The PDP also claimed that the funds were given to the APC’s gubernatorial candidate, Monday Okpebholo.

Further allegations from the PDP include claims that the Presidency has directed the National Security Adviser and the Department of State Services to disrupt the election in strongholds of the PDP to skew the results in favor of the APC.

The party reported that security deployments would be heavy in areas loyal to PDP, particularly around the governor’s strongholds, to destabilize the voting process.

Advertorial

The PDP’s statement outlined concerns that some electoral officials are believed to be APC members and are allegedly tasked with delaying results to incite violence and create a chaotic environment to benefit the APC candidate.

Despite these allegations, the PDP expressed confidence in winning the election through a fair and peaceful process.

The party’s candidate, Asue Ighodalo, is projected to secure at least 70 percent of the vote, according to the PDP.

The PDP has called on President Bola Tinubu to ensure the election is conducted transparently and without interference.

Advertorial

The party urged the President to prioritize the safety and peace of Edo State and refrain from actions that could jeopardize the electoral process.

In response, APC’s National Deputy Organising Secretary, Nze Chidi Duru, dismissed the PDP’s claims as baseless, suggesting they stem from past practices during the PDP’s previous administration.

Duru challenged the PDP to provide concrete evidence for their allegations and criticized them for allegedly projecting their past misdeeds onto others.

Advertorial

Duru remarked, “The PDP’s history of election rigging is well-documented, and it’s concerning if their current accusations are influenced by their own past behavior. They need to prove their claims with evidence if they have any.”
