Hardship: APC State Chairmen Demand Closed-Door Talks With Tinubu, NWC

The chairmen of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have expressed concerns about the country’s current state of affairs under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

In a recent meeting held in Abuja, the APC States Chairmen’s Forum resolved to seek an audience with the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) and President Tinubu to address pressing issues affecting the nation.

Advertorial

Alphonsus Ogar Eba, Secretary of the APC States Chairmen’s Forum and Chairman of the Cross River State APC, told reporters after the meeting that Nigerians are facing challenges related to worsening insecurity, economic hardship, fuel price hikes, increased electricity tariffs, and other issues.

Ogar, flanked by acting forum chairman Hon. Cornelius Ojelabi and other state chairmen, emphasized that the forum aims to discuss these matters privately with the federal government and the NWC.

Advertorial

He stated, “The Forum of APC States Chairmen met to discuss concerns regarding the party’s democratic values and the success of our APC-led administration under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima. We have resolved to hold closed-door meetings with the NWC and government to address the situation in the country.”

Responding to questions about the economic hardship faced by Nigerians, Ogar acknowledged the complaints and assured that the forum would engage the federal government to find solutions. He added that it would be premature to comment further until those discussions are held.

Advertorial

The chairmen also addressed internal party matters, including the extension of the caretaker committee of the Rivers State APC, led by Chief Tony Okocha.

The forum believes that this decision by the NWC, under the leadership of Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, will strengthen the party as it prepares for the 2027 elections.

The forum further praised the performance of Nyesom Wike, the former governor of Rivers State and now Minister of the FCT, highlighting his achievements in security, infrastructure, and human capital development.

However, they declined to comment on whether non-performing ministers should be removed from office.

Education Expert Refutes FG’s Claims On Togo’s Degree-Awarding Institutions

Education Minister, Prof. Tahir Mamman

The President of the Centre de Perfectionnement aux Techniques Economiques et Commerciales (CPTEC), Prof. Tunde Adeyemi, has refuted the Nigerian Federal Government’s claim that only three recognized degree-awarding institutions exist in Togo.

Advertorial

This statement came in response to the remarks made by Nigeria’s Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, who disclosed findings from a committee investigating certificate fraud in neighboring countries.

Prof. Mamman had stated during a one-year anniversary speech that the Ministry had discovered cases of Nigerian students acquiring fake certificates from institutions in Benin Republic and Togo.

Advertorial

According to him, only three universities in Togo and five in Benin are officially accredited to issue degrees, meaning that many students with certificates from unrecognized institutions were holding invalid qualifications.

However, Prof. Adeyemi, speaking alongside members of the CPTEC governing council, challenged these claims, asserting that Togo has over 40 accredited degree-awarding institutions.

Advertorial

He explained that the Federal Government likely misunderstood the Togolese education system, which includes universities, institutes, and higher colleges, all of which have the authority to issue degrees.

Adeyemi pointed out that Togo’s Ministry of Higher Learning had clarified the educational structure to Nigeria, yet the Nigerian government misinterpreted the information, likely due to differences in educational frameworks between English-speaking and French-speaking countries.

Advertorial

He further noted that the Nigerian Ministry of Education failed to provide a detailed list of the supposedly unaccredited institutions, which raised concerns among stakeholders.

The controversy comes after the Nigerian government’s decision to halt the accreditation and evaluation of degrees from Togo, following earlier concerns about fraudulent certificates from Benin Republic.

Adeyemi called for clarity, urging the Nigerian government to release more specific findings and work with Togo’s Ministry of Higher Learning to resolve the matter properly.

Court Dismisses Three Charges In Trump Election Case

A Georgia judge has dismissed three charges from the criminal case against former President Donald Trump and his co-defendants, which accuses them of attempting to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election in Georgia.

 Advertorial

Fulton County Superior Court Judge, Scott McAfee, ruled on Thursday that two of the three dismissed charges directly involve Trump, reducing the number of charges he now faces in the state to eight.

The dismissed counts relate to the submission of false elector certificates, which falsely claimed Trump had won Georgia.

The judge pointed out that under the Supremacy Clause of the U.S. Constitution, state authorities cannot prosecute individuals for actions that fall under federal jurisdiction.

Advertorial

However, Judge McAfee rejected efforts to dismiss the entire indictment, which includes allegations of racketeering and conspiracy.

Trump’s legal team is currently appealing to disqualify Fani Willis, the Fulton County district attorney leading the prosecution, with the appeals court set to hear arguments in December.

The indictment includes 18 co-defendants, including notable figures such as Trump’s former lawyer Rudy Giuliani and former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows.

Advertorial

Several defendants have already struck plea deals, while Trump continues to fight charges related to both this case and separate federal investigations.

Although the case is paused pending the outcome of the appeals process, Trump still faces multiple legal challenges stemming from his efforts to overturn the 2020 election results.

Insecurity: Nigerians Helpless Against Bandits – Peter Obi

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, has criticized the current Nigerian government, describing it as “nearly ineffective” amid rising cases of mass kidnappings and banditry across the country.

Advertorial

Obi expressed his concerns on Wednesday in a series of posts on his X handle, following the abduction of 150 individuals in the Gobir Emirate of Sokoto State.

He condemned the recent attack where bandits not only kidnapped over 150 people but also rustled more than 1,000 cattle from several villages within the emirate.

Advertorial

This latest incident came just days after the tragic death of the Emir of Gobir, Alhaji Isa Muhammad Bawa, who had been kidnapped on July 29 along with his son and six others on the Sokoto-Sabon Birni Road.

The Emir’s death in captivity has added to the growing sense of insecurity in the region.

Obi stated that the murder of the Emir and the subsequent kidnappings highlighted the severe decline of Nigeria’s national security.

Advertorial

He noted, “We are now at the mercy of terrorists and bandits, with a nearly ineffective government to protect us. This is not just a tragedy, but a national emergency.”

Obi called for urgent and decisive action to address the crisis, urging the government to take concrete steps rather than offering empty promises. He emphasized the need for a strong commitment to tackle insecurity, food scarcity, and poverty in Nigeria, stressing that, “Enough must now be enough. We must revive our commitment to the safety and security of all Nigerians.”

Court Of Appeal Overturns Judgment Barring Secondus, Others, From PDP Meetings

The Court of Appeal in Abuja has overturned a lower court’s order that had prevented Uche Secondus, former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), along with Celestine Omehia, a former Rivers Governor, and Austin Opara, a former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, from participating in PDP meetings.

Advertorial

In a unanimous decision by a three-judge panel, the appellate court found the appeals filed by the three PDP members to be valid.

The court ruled that the Federal High Court’s order, which had barred Secondus, Omehia, and Opara from attending the PDP’s National Executive Committee meetings or engaging in its deliberations, was issued in error.

Advertorial

The Court of Appeal determined that decisions regarding party membership and participation in meetings are internal matters for the political party to resolve.

It emphasized that such issues are not subject to judicial review, deeming them outside the court’s jurisdiction.

Consequently, the Appellate Court nullified the Federal High Court’s proceedings and the restraining orders issued by Justice Inyang Ekwo on April 5.

Igbo Women Demand Removal Of Soldiers From South-East Roads, Call For Kanu’s Release

The National Igbo Women Assembly (IWA) has urged the Federal Government to withdraw soldiers currently stationed at checkpoints throughout the South-East region, claiming that their presence is causing more harm than good.

According to the group, the soldiers are primarily engaged in extortion and harassment of commuters, rather than fulfilling their security duties.

Advertorial

In a statement, IWA expressed dismay over the soldiers’ treatment of motorists, including forcing them to leave their vehicles and cross checkpoints on foot.

The group questioned why such practices are specific to the South-East and argued that the people of the region should not be subjected to such humiliation.

Lolo Nneka Chimezie, President of IWA, criticized the soldiers for deviating from their security mandate and instead engaging in practices detrimental to the citizens they are supposed to protect.

Advertorial

She pointed out that despite the heavy military presence, criminal activities continue to occur near these checkpoints without any intervention.

The IWA is calling for the Federal Government to immediately remove the soldiers from the region and allow the police to take over, noting that police officers are generally more accessible and less harsh towards the public.

Advertorial

The organization also addressed the ongoing anti-Igbo sentiments in Lagos, questioning why individuals responsible for ethnic hate speech and violence against the Igbo community have not been arrested.

The IWA is particularly concerned about the detention of Eze Nwajagu, a prominent Igbo leader in Lagos, who was reportedly arrested for calling on IPOB to protect the Igbo in response to threats and attacks on their community.

Advertorial

The group expressed frustration over the apparent disparity in law enforcement, highlighting that those who have threatened or attacked the Igbo in Lagos have not faced similar legal consequences.

They argue that this unequal treatment reflects a broader issue of injustice.

The IWA has called on President Bola Tinubu to either release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and Chief Nwajagu or take immediate action against those threatening the Igbo community, insisting that the same legal standards should apply to all Nigerians.

27 Judges Face NJC Investigation Panels Over Alleged Judicial Misconduct, Rascality

The National Judicial Council (NJC) has constituted four investigative panels to probe 27 High Court judges accused of various acts of judicial misconduct.

The council, which is chaired by the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, also issued a stern warning to Justice O. M. Olagunju of the Oyo State High Court for the inappropriate language used in a letter directed to the CJN.

Advertorial

The letter challenged the Council’s decision and policy regarding the appointment of the President of the Customary Court of Appeal in Oyo State.

In a statement released by the NJC’s Director of Information, Mr. Soji Oye, it was disclosed that the council, during its 106th meeting, reviewed the report from its Preliminary Complaints Assessment Committee.

The report pertained to 22 petitions filed against the 27 judges from both Federal and State High Courts.

Advertorial

Following the review, the Council found the allegations in some of the petitions to be credible and consequently established four committees to thoroughly investigate the cases.

However, the NJC dismissed 18 other petitions due to lack of merit, abandonment, or because they were deemed sub judice.

Among the dismissed petitions were those against Hon. Justice Monica B. Dongban-Mensem, President of the Court of Appeal, and several other Justices from both the Court of Appeal and Federal High Court, including Hon. Justice John Tsoho, Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, and Hon. Justice Okon E. Abang.

Advertorial

Additionally, five judges have been placed on the NJC’s pre-sanction Watch List Register due to poor performance.

The NJC indicated that these judges could face sanctions if their performance does not improve.

As this was the final meeting presided over by the outgoing CJN, Justice Ariwoola, before his retirement, he expressed his gratitude to the Council members and the Secretariat for their support.

Advertorial

In return, the members praised the outgoing CJN and wished him good health in his retirement.
