Hunger Cannot Be Stopped With Threats – DJ Switch Knocks Wike, Asari Dokubo

Nigerian DJ, Obianuju Catherine Udeh, popularly known as DJ Switch, has issued a bold challenge to Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike and Niger Delta activist Asari Dokubo, urging them to address the root causes of hunger instead of resorting to threats.

The challenge comes in the wake of nationwide protests titled “10 Days of Rage” under the hashtag #EndBadGovernance, aimed at highlighting the economic challenges facing Nigeria.

Before the protests began, Asari Dokubo warned against bringing the demonstrations to the Niger Delta region, arguing that the protesters’ agenda did not address local issues.

“I and all those who believe in me and those of you who are committed to the interest of the Niger Delta, we are not going to be part of any protest. It is as clear as that,” he stated firmly. “If anybody has the right to protest, I also have the right to resist protest. Where your right stops, that is where my right begins.”

Similarly, Nyesom Wike, during a security council meeting in Abuja, raised concerns about potential property damage by protesters based on intelligence reports.

He also mentioned the identification of a senator suspected of sponsoring the protests.

In response to these statements, DJ Switch took to social media to directly challenge Wike and Asari Dokubo to confront the protesters face-to-face.

“The only thing that can stop HUNGER is FOOD! Not guns, not teargas, not threats from fat globs like Asari Dokubo and chicken feed Wike! I wonder why they are hiding now…. Come outside let them eat you raw!” DJ Switch posted on her X handle.

Earlier on August 1, she had encouraged Nigerians to view the hunger protests as a critical opportunity to demand better governance in the country.

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s Presidential Candidate in the 2023 general election, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to address the nation amidst ongoing protests.

The demonstrations, which took place in over 25 states on Thursday and continued with less violence on Friday, highlight the public’s discontent.

He also clarified a circulating video that showed him in Abuja, stating, “I am here in Onitsha; I can’t be here and be in Abuja.”

Obi acknowledged the protesters’ concerns about nationwide hardship and urged that their demands be pursued legally.

He insisted that President Tinubu should directly address the nation, rather than relying on aides or appointees during such critical times.

“My appeal is for the President to come out and address the nation, he is the one the people elected, holding their mandate, and he should not be using aides or appointees to reach the people at such critical times,” Obi said.

He also expressed condolences to the families of those who lost their lives, as well as to those injured and those who lost property during the protests.

Oyo Govt Releases Funds For Burial Of National Flag Designer, Taiwo Akinkunmi

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has released funds for the burial of Pa Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi, the designer of Nigeria’s national flag, according to a statement from the Akinkunmi family spokesperson, Samuel Akinkunmi, on Friday.

Advertorial

Pa Akinkunmi, originally from Abeokuta in Ogun State, resided in Ibadan, Oyo State, until his death on August 29, 2023.

His design was selected in 1958 as the winning entry in a competition to create a new national flag for Nigeria.

The family’s statement expressed gratitude to Governor Makinde, noting that despite promises from both federal and state governments, the burial had been delayed.

Advertorial

The federal government had previously sent a delegation led by the Minister for Information and National Orientation, Muhammad Idris, who pledged federal support for the burial.

Similarly, the Oyo State government had promised assistance.

However, when the family attempted to finalize burial arrangements, these promises were not immediately fulfilled.

As a result, the family prepared to proceed with the burial independently.

Advertorial

The family expressed appreciation for Governor Makinde’s fulfillment of his promise and acknowledged the support from the 7th assembly, the Oyo State Advisory Council, and the Yoruba World Congress UK.

The statement concluded with a call for the federal government to honor its commitment, highlighting ongoing support efforts by the Yoruba World Congress UK, which had publicly addressed the matter to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Advertorial

“Although the Presidency is yet to fulfil its promise at the time of this correspondence, we are grateful for Governor Makinde’s intervention and the support we have received,” Samuel Akinkunmi added.

Kamala Harris Clinches Democratic Presidential Nomination

On Friday, US Vice President Kamala Harris secured the Democratic party’s presidential nomination, marking a historic milestone as she prepares to face Republican Donald Trump in November.

Harris, 59, became the first Black and South Asian woman to earn a major party’s nomination, following a five-day electronic vote by nearly 4,000 party convention delegates. Her nomination will be formally recognized at a convention in Chicago later this month.

Advertorial

Harris expressed her gratitude, stating, “I am honored to be the presumptive Democratic nominee for president of the United States,” during a phone-in to a party celebration after receiving the necessary votes by the second day of the virtual vote.

Since Joe Biden ended his reelection bid two weeks ago, Harris has taken command of the party, breaking fundraising records, attracting large crowds, and closing the polling gap with Trump.

Biden expressed his pride on social media after her nomination.

Advertorial

With her nomination secured, Harris is set to embark on a campaign tour across seven key election states next week, although her running mate has yet to be announced.

The Democratic Party opted for a virtual nomination process, similar to the one used in the 2020 pandemic-hit election, due to an early candidate submission deadline in Ohio.

The virtual roll call signals the start of the 2024 convention, with traditional festivities beginning when party members gather in Chicago on August 19.

Advertorial

This event will feature a ceremonial vote for Harris, celebrating her journey from a California prosecutor to a presidential candidate.

Trump’s campaign faced disruption on July 21 when 81-year-old Biden, amid concerns about his age and declining poll numbers, withdrew and endorsed Harris.

Harris, 20 years younger than Trump, has quickly gained momentum, raising $310 million in July, more than double Trump’s total.

Advertorial

Harris and her running mate are scheduled to rally in Pennsylvania, a critical swing state where Democratic Governor Josh Shapiro is a potential vice-presidential candidate.

Pennsylvania, along with Michigan and Wisconsin, was crucial to Biden’s 2020 victory and remains a key battleground.

Harris will also visit diverse Sun Belt and southern states, including Georgia, North Carolina, Arizona, and Nevada, to bolster support among Black and Hispanic voters.

Advertorial

Her campaign has enlisted senior advisors from Barack Obama’s 2008 and 2012 campaigns, reflecting their ambitious approach.

In contrast to Biden’s appeals to the nation’s founding principles, Harris’s campaign focuses on the future, framing the race as a fight for “freedom” rather than the broader concept of “democracy.”

Her team has adopted a more aggressive stance, criticizing Trump for avoiding debates and highlighting his criminal record.

Despite her assertive campaign, Harris has not detailed her plans or given extensive interviews since entering the race, leaving voters without a clear understanding of her vision. Meanwhile, Republicans have struggled to formulate a consistent strategy against Harris, initially labeling her as too liberal before shifting to false accusations about her racial identity.
