The President of the Initiative for Leadership Development and Change, Ugochukwu Nnam, has described Enugu as the safest state in Nigeria’s South East region.
He made this assertion on Sunday in Abuja during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, following a recent assessment tour of the state.
Nnam, a civil society organisation leader, said his visit to Enugu revealed significant advancements in security that were impossible to ignore.
“The rating was precipitated by my assessment visit to the state recently, which was not only satisfactory but ‘glaring for the blind to see’,” he stated.
He praised the Enugu State Security Trust Fund, which targets over ₦20 billion in funding, for its contribution to securing lives and property.
“Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) are extensively installed almost everywhere in Enugu in thousands with cameras equipped with facial recognition and vehicle identification systems,” he said.
Commending Governor Peter Mbah’s leadership, Nnam urged other governors to adopt Enugu’s innovative approach.
“Such technological approach, which is far from conventional security method, will improve surveillance across the state,” he noted.
Nnam also applauded the introduction of the “Enugu Safe City” project, which he described as pioneering not just in the region but across Nigeria.
He said the initiative was designed to bolster the state’s security architecture.
“The essence of the project was to provide effective communication and surveillance systems that allow for timely response to security situations across the state,” he explained.
According to him, the initiative will enhance the capacity of security forces and improve crime prevention and detection.
He added that “Gov. Peter Mbah had ultimately made Enugu a model for technology-driven security management.”
