The Anambra State Director of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Daniel Onyishi, who was abducted on June 12, 2025, has regained his freedom, according to a statement released by the Anambra State Police Command.

Onyishi was kidnapped along Winner Road, Awka, after being trailed by unknown assailants.

He was released on Sunday, June 22, and is currently receiving medical attention at an undisclosed hospital.

Spokesman for the Anambra State Police Command, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the development, though he did not state whether any ransom was paid.

He praised the collaborative rescue efforts that led to Onyishi’s release.

“The Anambra State Police Command on June 22, 2025, confirmed the release of the abducted NDLEA Anambra State Director, Mr. Daniel Onyishi,” Ikenga said in the statement.

He explained that the rescue was the result of combined efforts by the Police and other sister security agencies, particularly covert operatives of the NDLEA’s Zone 12 Command.

“It would be recalled that the victim was abducted in the early hours of June 12, 2025, along Winner Road, Awka. He is currently in safe custody and receiving medical attention,” Ikenga added.

“The Police, in collaboration with sister agencies, especially the high-powered covert operatives of the NDLEA led by Mrs. Florence Ezeonye, the Zone 12 Commander of the NDLEA, complemented the aggressive rescue efforts which helped the victim’s safe return.”

Ikenga also noted that the Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has briefed the police high command and activated the directive of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.

Onyishi’s abduction had sparked concern and renewed public outcry for improved security, particularly regarding the rising incidents of kidnapping in Anambra State.
