The Federal High Court has approved the creation of a Vacation Court at its Enugu Division to ensure that urgent and sensitive cases from the South-East region are heard during the upcoming judicial recess.
This decision comes in response to a formal request made by Sir K. Chukwudi Olemeforo, Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Oji River Branch, through a letter dated June 24, 2025.
According to Catherine Oby Christopher, Director of Information at the Federal High Court, the initiative was approved by Chief Judge John Tsoho after careful consideration of the appeal’s merits and the need to maintain access to justice throughout the vacation period.
“The special court sitting will entertain urgent or sensitive matters arising from the South-East states of Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo,” Christopher stated.
The Vacation Court will begin operations on Monday, July 28, and run through Tuesday, September 16, 2025, coinciding with the court’s annual break.
Regular court sittings are scheduled to resume on Wednesday, September 17, 2025.
Justice M. T. Segun-Bello has been assigned to preside over the Vacation Court in Enugu.
DAILY GAZETTE had earlier reported that the Federal High Court of Nigeria would commence its yearly vacation on July 28, with a break extending into mid-September.
The court emphasized that it remains committed to uninterrupted access to justice, even during judicial holidays, especially for matters that cannot afford delay.
