Governor Mbah

The Enugu State Government has sealed the X-ray unit of the Poly General Hospital in Asata, citing unsafe practices and regulatory violations.

The action was taken on Wednesday by the newly appointed Commissioner for Health, Prof. George Ugwu, during an unannounced inspection conducted alongside officials from the Ministry of Health.

Prof. Ugwu said the decision was made in the interest of public safety, stressing that the continued operation of the unit in its current condition posed significant risks to patients, healthcare workers, and the surrounding community.

“This action will serve as a warning as Gov. Peter Mbah will not compromise on the quality of healthcare delivery,” Ugwu stated.

He explained that the inspection uncovered multiple breaches, including the lack of proper radiation shielding and a failure to implement critical safety procedures for radiology operations.

“This inspection revealed several violations, including the absence of proper radiation shielding and failure to maintain essential safety protocols,” he added.

The commissioner made it clear that all health facilities in the state must comply with set standards, and any institution falling short would be swiftly sanctioned.

He also assured the public that the hospital’s X-ray services would only resume after all safety issues were addressed and the facility passed a follow-up inspection.

“The safety of our citizens is non-negotiable,” Prof. Ugwu emphasized.
