In a bid to enhance teaching quality and introduce cutting-edge methods in classrooms, the Enugu State Government has commenced the training of no fewer than 1,000 science, technical, and vocational teachers across the state.

The initiative, which began on August 1 and is set to run until September 12, 2025, is themed “21st Century Pedagogy in Science, Technical and Vocational Education.”

Speaking at the official flag-off of the training in Enugu on Monday, Dr. Amaka Ngene, Chairman of the Science, Technical and Vocational Schools Management Board (STVSMB), said the programme is designed to bring classroom instruction in the state in line with global best practices.

According to Dr. Ngene, the training is being organised in collaboration with the Enugu State College of Education (Technical) and targets teachers employed under the STVSMB.

“This training is one of the many ways His Excellency, Dr. Peter Mbah, is preparing our educators for 21st-century professional growth and aligning them with modern innovation and technology,” she said.

She added that the programme reflects Governor Mbah’s strong commitment to raising the standards of education and fostering the professional development of teachers.

“Over the years, our teachers have lacked opportunities for retraining. This programme will retool their knowledge and expose them to modern approaches using ICT, technological devices, and practical application of the equipment recently provided by the governor,” Ngene noted.

She also reassured participants that the training had been fully funded by the state government, including accommodation for all participants.

“The training has been streamlined to ensure that no teacher willing to learn is left behind,” she emphasized.

Also speaking at the event, the Provost of Enugu State College of Education (Technical), Dr. Stella Ekwueme, praised Governor Mbah for his significant investment in the education sector.

“Gov. Mbah is building 260 Smart Schools, recently cleared salary arrears owed to our staff, funded our course accreditations, is constructing a Centre for Learning and Innovation, and has increased our subvention, among others,” Ekwueme stated.

She assured the STVSMB that the college is fully prepared to deliver on its obligations under the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with the board, noting that lecturers have been mobilised for the training.

“We encourage the teachers to take this opportunity seriously. Ask questions. The practical (hands-on) aspect of the training will be even more critical,” she urged.
