The Imo State Police Command has successfully foiled an armed robbery attempt in Owerri, leading to the arrest of suspects and the recovery of firearms and ammunition.

According to a statement by the command’s spokesperson, DSP Henry Okoye, the police responded to a distress call on Sunday regarding a robbery in progress at Bishop’s Court, located behind Imo State University.

Swift deployment of operatives to the scene led to the arrest of Ernest Nweke, a native of Umuoji in Ngor Okpala LGA, who currently resides in the World Bank area of Owerri. A locally made pistol was recovered from him.

On the same day, a separate incident involving a three-man robbery gang at the same location was reported. Police arrested another suspect while two others fled the scene.

Further investigations and interrogation of the arrested suspects led officers to a location where additional weapons, including a pump-action gun and seven live cartridges, were recovered.

The suspects are currently in custody and will be arraigned in court once investigations are concluded.

Commending the public for their swift action, Commissioner of Police Aboki Danjuma praised residents for reporting the incident promptly and emphasized the importance of community-police collaboration in combating crime.

“The Imo State Police Command appreciates the vigilance of the public and urges continued support in reporting suspicious activities. Community cooperation remains critical in maintaining safety,” said DSP Okoye.

The command also reminded residents to make use of its emergency hotline: 0803 477 3600 to report crimes or emergencies.
