A storage building within the Nigerian Army’s Ilese Barracks in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, was rocked by an explosion in the early hours of Thursday, August 14, 2025, followed by a brief fire outbreak.

In a statement confirming the incident, the Army’s spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Appolonia Anele, described the explosion as “minor” and reassured the public that no lives were lost and no injuries were recorded.

“Specifically, in the early hours of today, 14 August 2025, a localized explosion occurred within one of the storage buildings of the 42 Engineers Brigade Counter Improvised Explosive Device Squadron leading to a limited fire outbreak,” the statement read.

Anele explained that the swift response of personnel from the 12 Field Engineer Regiment, working in conjunction with the Ijebu-Ode Fire Service, ensured the fire was quickly brought under control.

“Importantly, no lives were lost, and no injuries were sustained. The structural damage was confined to the affected building and some stored materials. A detailed assessment is currently underway to determine the extent of material loss,” she added.

The Nigerian Army urged residents of Ilese and nearby communities to remain calm and continue their daily activities without fear.

To ensure such incidents do not recur, the Army confirmed that a thorough investigation has been launched in collaboration with other relevant agencies to identify the exact cause of the explosion.
