The Anambra State Police Command has apprehended an ex-soldier and five other suspects in connection with armed robbery and kidnapping activities in the state.

The suspects were arrested during a targeted raid in Isiagu, Awka South Local Government Area, following the kidnapping of a man from his farmland.

According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the victim was released after a ransom was paid, prompting a swift response from operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu.

The arrested individuals are Michael Nwobodo (30), Eze Friday (29), Uche Okolo (23), Chinedu Gilbert (29) and Dominic Oraz (38), identified as a deserter from the Nigerian Army.

Items recovered from the hideout in Notoko, Awka include 6 automatic pump-action rifles, 63 live cartridges, Rocket launcher, Military cap and handcuffs and 2 police-grade teargas canisters.

Others were; 3 Motorola walkie-talkies, 5 machetes, 1 jackknife, A microscope and a power bank, Criminal charms and ₦26,000 in cash.

During interrogation, Dominic Oraz reportedly confessed to deserting the Nigerian Army in November 2024.

The police have initiated communication with military authorities to verify and process further legal actions.

Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, commended the operatives for their swift and decisive action.

He urged residents to remain alert and continue providing intelligence that can help the police combat crime across the state.

“The Anambra State Police Command remains committed to tackling violent crime. We encourage the public to stay vigilant and report suspicious movements promptly,” CP Orutugu stated.
