The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has resumed the payment of arrears to corps members after a two-month delay, with the first round of disbursements taking place on Wednesday, September 3.

This payment marks the first since June 3 and reflects the newly approved ₦77,000 monthly allowance introduced by the Federal Government earlier this year.

On April 5, NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, had assured both serving and recently passed-out corps members that they would receive the arrears once funds were made available.

“Once funds are released to us to offset the arrears, we will pay them. Even our corps members who passed out recently will benefit. We have their bank details,” Nafiu stated during the Batch A 2025 Pre-Mobilisation Workshop in Abuja.

His assurance followed the government’s announcement of the new ₦77,000 allowance as part of its economic relief initiatives for Nigerian youths amid rising living costs.

A former corps member who spoke to DAILY GAZETTE anonymously confirmed receipt of the payment.

“After waiting two months, I honestly didn’t expect the alert anymore. But it’s not just about the money, it’s about knowing that our service actually matters,” they said.

The arrears reportedly cover a nine-month period from July 2024 to March 2025 and the delay had led to widespread frustration among corps members.

Brigadier General Nafiu reiterated the government’s commitment to youth welfare, noting that the administration remains “responsible and responsive” to the needs of Nigerians.
