A tragic incident occurred on Friday, 19 September 2025, along the Eha‑Alumona, Eha Ndiagu road in Nsukka Local Government Area, Enugu State, Rev. Fr. Matthew Eya of the Catholic Diocese of Nsukka, was shot dead by unidentified assailants.

The Chancellor of the Diocese, Fr. Cajetan Iyidobi, reacted with profound sorrow.

“Shocked to the marrow, it is with crushing pain and sorrow that I inform you of the tragic death of yet another brother of ours, Rev. Fr. Matthew Eya,” he said, while also expressing hope in the resurrection of the dead.

Enugu State’s government described the murder as “cowardly and cold‑blooded,” emphasizing that the safety of lives and property remains a top priority.

In a bid to help bring the perpetrators to justice, the government has pledged a ₦10 million reward for anyone who comes forward with credible information.

Further, the commissioner of information reassured the public of the state’s capacity with necessary technology and manpower to hunt down those responsible.

The statement also extended heartfelt condolences to Rev. Fr. Eya’s family, the Catholic Diocese of Nsukka and the wider Catholic community.
