The Federal High Court in Abuja has directed the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) to constitute a medical team to evaluate whether Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), is medically fit to continue standing trial.

Justice James Omotosho issued the order on Thursday while ruling on an application filed by Kanu, who requested to be transferred to a private ward at the National Hospital for treatment of a reportedly life-threatening condition.

The court ordered the President of the NMA to set up a team comprising eight to ten medical professionals, including the Chief Medical Director of the National Hospital or a representative.

The team is expected to assess Whether Kanu’s current health status justifies his transfer to the National Hospital, Whether the Department of State Services (DSS) possesses adequate medical facilities to manage his condition And whether his health challenges render him unfit to stand trial.

Justice Omotosho instructed that the medical report be signed by both the chairman and secretary of the medical team and filed with the court within eight days, starting from September 26, 2025.

This development follows arguments presented by Kanu’s lead counsel, Onyechi Ikpeazu (SAN), and prosecution counsel, Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN).
