From January 2027, international students graduating in the UK will only be able to stay and seek a graduate‑level job for 18 months, a reduction from the current two‑year allowance.
The change, announced by the UK Home Secretary, forms part of the government’s broader immigration reform aimed at ensuring graduates swiftly move into employment and contribute meaningfully to the economy.
In addition to shortening the post‑study route, the UK is raising the Immigration Skills Charge (ISC) paid by employers sponsoring skilled foreign workers by around 32%, and increasing language requirements for student visa candidates.
Critics argue this may reduce the UK’s attractiveness to international students and impact the higher‑education sector’s recruitment capacity.
