The All Progressives Congress, APC, in Enugu State has dismissed allegations that local government chairmen are compelling public servants to register or revalidate their membership with the party as a precondition for receiving salaries.
The party described the claims as baseless, misleading and driven by political interests.
Speaking to journalists on Tuesday during the membership revalidation of the party’s immediate past state chairman, Chief Ugochukwu Agballah, at Udi/Agbudu Ward in Udi Local Government Area, Chairman of the APC Caretaker Committee in Enugu State, Dr Ben Nwoye, said the exercise was entirely voluntary.
Nwoye said the turnout recorded across the state was a reflection of growing acceptance of the party, not coercion.
He stated that no government worker was under pressure to join the APC, stressing that participation in the registration and revalidation process was based on individual choice.
According to him, the opposition was behind what he called deliberate attempts to discredit the exercise through false narratives.
Nwoye also disclosed that data from the party’s electronic registration platform showed Enugu State leading other South-East states in the ongoing membership drive, with Udi Local Government Area topping the list among the 17 councils in the state.
He attributed the development to internal unity within the APC and increasing public support for the administration of Governor Peter Mbah.
While noting that some figures were still being uploaded due to network challenges in rural areas, he said available records already placed Enugu at the forefront of the exercise in the region.
Earlier, Chief Agballah, while revalidating his membership, urged party members to remain committed to the APC and its leadership, emphasising that discipline and inclusiveness were essential for electoral success.
He described mass registration as critical to the party’s future victories, noting that the strength of any political party lies in the size and mobilisation of its membership.
Agballah reaffirmed his support for the current APC leadership in Enugu State and commended Governor Peter Mbah for promoting unity and resolving internal disagreements within the party.
The event attracted party leaders, lawmakers and local government officials, which APC stakeholders said was a demonstration of renewed cohesion and momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections.
