Over Alleged Rape, Woman’s Death
The Delta State Police Command has arrested popular social media influencer Ifeanyi Ogbonna, popularly known as “Odogwu of Asaba,” over allegations of rape linked to the death of a 20-year-old woman.
The arrest followed a petition alleging that the deceased travelled to Asaba on June 1, 2026, after the influencer reportedly invited her with a promise to train her in content creation through a programme promoted on his social media platforms.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer of the Delta State Command, SP Bright Edafe, the victim was allegedly taken to a hotel upon her arrival in Asaba, where she was reportedly raped and physically assaulted.
Police said the young woman returned home traumatised and later narrated her ordeal to her family.
She was also said to have recorded a video detailing the alleged assault and the emotional distress she experienced before her death.
Investigators disclosed that the victim subsequently ingested a poisonous substance in an apparent suicide attempt.
She was rushed to hospital but later died while receiving treatment.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage on social media, with many Nigerians calling for justice and a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.
Following the petition, the Commissioner of Police in Delta State, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, directed the Area Command in Effurun to commence an immediate investigation into the allegations.
Police operatives subsequently arrested Ogbonna, who reportedly made useful statements during preliminary interrogation. Authorities said investigations are ongoing to establish the full facts of the case.
The Delta State Police Command assured the deceased’s family and the public that the investigation would be thorough, professional and impartial, adding that anyone found culpable would face the full weight of the law.
