The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State has condemned the reported disruption of political activities involving opposition parties in the area, describing the development as inimical to democracy and political participation.

The party also dismissed allegations that it was behind the reported incidents, urging the public to disregard what it described as unfounded accusations against its members and supporters.

In a statement signed by the APC Chairman in Nkanu West, Hon. Chinedu Hillary Nnaji, the party said it was “deeply concerned” about the development and strongly opposed any attempt to disrupt the activities of political parties in the area.

The party, however, attributed the reported incidents to possible disagreements among rival factions within the affected opposition parties, citing existing internal crises and leadership disputes.

According to the statement, recent developments within the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Enugu had been characterised by allegations of irregularities, intimidation, violence and financial extortion during its primary election, resulting in parallel leadership claims, litigation and strained political relationships.

The APC also cited the crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), describing its internal disagreements as a matter of public knowledge that had persisted for some time and extended to issues involving the party’s national leadership.

The party said it remained “formidable and ready” to participate in the ongoing campaigns and forthcoming elections in Nkanu West, while urging its supporters to remain calm and law-abiding.

Nkanu West APC further frowned at what it described as a campaign of calumny and false allegations aimed at linking the party to the reported disruption of political activities.

“We urge our supporters and the general public to disregard such allegations as they are unfounded, baseless and exist only in the concocted imagination of the purveyors,” the statement said.

The party nevertheless called on relevant security agencies to thoroughly investigate the reported incidents and establish the circumstances surrounding them.

It reiterated its commitment to peaceful political participation, democratic principles and the rule of law, while urging all political actors in the local government to conduct their activities peacefully.
