Former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Bamanga Tukur, who died at the age of 90 has been laid to rest in Adamawa state.
Tukur’s death was confirmed by family sources on Saturday, September 12, 2026. Details surrounding his death were not immediately made public.
Born on September 15, 1935, Tukur was a prominent Nigerian politician, businessman and administrator who occupied several key positions in both the public and private sectors.
He served as the governor of the defunct Gongola State in 1983, although his tenure was cut short by the military coup that brought an end to the Second Republic.
Before venturing fully into politics, Tukur served as General Manager of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) from 1975 to 1982.
He later returned to federal service as Minister of Industries under the military administration of former Head of State, General Sani Abacha, serving from 1993 to 1995.
Beyond Nigeria, Tukur was also prominent in continental business circles. He served as Executive President of the African Business Roundtable and Chairman of the NEPAD Business Group.
In March 2012, he was elected National Chairman of the PDP, succeeding Kawu Baraje. His tenure, however, was marked by internal crises within the party, leading to his resignation in January 2014.
The elder statesman, who held the traditional title of Tafidan Adamawa, was also a recipient of the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON).
Tukur is survived by his wives, children and grandchildren.
