The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a man identified as Chima Ofoeke over the alleged murder of his former girlfriend, Mmesoma Umeorini, in Uga, Aguata Local Government Area of the state.
The suspect, said to be from Ebonyi State, was arrested following an investigation into the disappearance of the deceased, whose mother had reported her missing since October 16.
The Police Public Relations Officer in Anambra State, Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed the development in a statement on Saturday, saying the arrest was carried out by police operatives in collaboration with members of the Agunechemba security outfit in Uga.
“Acting on intelligence-led information, police operatives, in collaboration with members of the Agunechemba security outfit in Uga, arrested the suspect, who was identified as the deceased’s alleged former boyfriend,” Ikenga said.
According to the police spokesperson, the suspect allegedly confessed during preliminary investigations that he killed Umeorini following the breakdown of their romantic relationship.
Ikenga added that the suspect subsequently led detectives to the location where the victim’s remains were recovered.
A video clip obtained by DAILY GAZETTE reportedly showed security operatives arresting and questioning the suspect, who was seen holding a sack said to contain the deceased’s remains.
In the footage, the suspect allegedly admitted to strangling the woman after she ended their relationship.
The circumstances surrounding the alleged killing have sparked concern, particularly over the safety of people experiencing relationship conflicts and the need for timely reporting of missing persons.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, Nnanna Ama, has ordered the transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Awka for a comprehensive investigation.
The police said further developments would be communicated as the investigation progresses.
The command also urged members of the public to promptly report missing-person cases and suspicious activities to the relevant authorities.
