Nigerian Afrobeats star, Davido, has added his voice to the growing demand for the release of controversial online commentator VeryDarkMan, who was reportedly detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Friday.
VeryDarkMan, known for his bold and often critical takes on societal issues via social media, was arrested over a yet-to-be-disclosed allegation.
Before his detention, he had posted online about visiting a GTBank branch in Abuja to file a complaint concerning a mysterious deduction from his mother’s bank account.
The exact circumstances of his arrest remain unclear, with no confirmation on whether he was taken in from inside the bank or its vicinity.
His arrest has since ignited widespread concern and reaction online.
Fans, civil society voices, and celebrities have all taken to various platforms to demand his immediate release and raise questions about the motive behind his detention.
Davido, weighing in through a post on X (formerly Twitter), praised the outpouring of support VeryDarkMan has received and called for his release.
“Outside all the noise it’s good to see that the good one does actually impacts lives and people actually appreciate!”
“The support I’m seeing for VDM everywhere is encouraging, makes one want to do more for the masses. FREE MY GUY,” the music icon wrote.
As public interest around the incident grows, many are calling on the EFCC to clarify the reason for the arrest, while others continue to amplify the #FreeVeryDarkMan hashtag across social media.
