The Institute of Management and Technology (IMT), Enugu, has launched a new Security Academy aimed at full-time training in physical security, cybersecurity, and crime prevention. The initiative is designed to equip students and graduates with industry-certified skills for employment and consulting roles in security.

Speaking at the institution’s 52nd Founders’ Day celebration, IMT Rector Professor Gozie Ogbodo explained the rationale behind the Academy’s creation.

“We are trying to breach the gaps in security because of the current dynamics in technology-related crimes,” he said.

“The Academy, which is already in full swing, will undertake physical security training and teaching, and issue certificates to its graduates. These certificates will help them acquire jobs or be consulted as experts on security issues. The problem really is that we employ people as security without training and foundation. This is part of our innovations.”

Prof. Ogbodo emphasized IMT’s longstanding legacy since its establishment in 1973 and its commitment to innovation, community service, and global relevance.

He highlighted the school’s autonomy and strides in academic quality: “The school had achieved 100 per cent accreditation, including nine new academic programmes, introduced a new faculty-based examination model, and banned extortion, sexual harassment, sorting, and all forms of indiscipline.”

The rector also announced affiliations with the University of Nigeria (UNN) across eight departments for degree programmes, with more to come. To sustain momentum, IMT is refocusing on several strategic areas:

  • Mindset change, revenue diversification, excellence in teaching & research, and infrastructure enhancement
  • “ICT driven innovation, efficient human resource management and fiscal discipline, transparency and accountability.”

Beyond academics, Prof. Ogbodo shared updates on initiatives already underway:

  • Student health insurance scheme
  • Restoration of campus water supply
  • Hostel and lecture hall renovations
  • Revived Industrial Centre
  • New Knowledge Centre for German studies
  • Skill development hubs for smart school graduates
  • Expansion of IMT Entreprises with bakeries, bottled water, photo studio, radio, newspaper, TV, plus partnerships with Dewdrops Hospitality, Uli Furniture, Printing Press, and IMT Farm

He urged the IMT community to “remain committed to the ideals of the school’s founding fathers,” assuring them of continued administrative support for transformative projects.
