U.S President Donald Trump has called for the swift and immediate removal of homeless individuals from the nation’s capital, declaring the situation around Washington as “unacceptable.”
Taking to his social media platform, Truth Social, on Sunday, Trump posted images showing makeshift tent communities and scattered trash along D.C. streets. Alongside the images, he wrote:
“The Homeless have to move out immediately. We will give you places to stay, but FAR from the capital. The Criminals, you don’t have to move out. We’re going to put you in jail where you belong.”
Trump also announced plans to hold a press conference on Monday, where he is expected to address his administration’s new policies on crime and sanitation in the capital.
“Washington should become safer and more beautiful than it ever was before,” he added.
Washington D.C, although managed by its local government and Mayor Muriel Bowser, remains under significant federal control, especially in matters of security and public property.
Trump, a Republican, has repeatedly clashed with Bowser, a Democrat, over crime and governance in the city.
While details of Trump’s plan remain vague, U.S media reports suggest that the federal government is currently considering deploying hundreds of National Guard personnel to assist with enforcing the policy. However, no official order has yet been confirmed.
This announcement comes two weeks after Trump hinted at a crackdown on homelessness around the White House, stating:
“I think it’s terrible, and we’ll have them removed immediately.”
