Nigerian football icon and former Super Eagles coach, Christian Chukwu, popularly known as “Chairman”, was on Saturday laid to rest in his hometown of Obe, Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State.

Chukwu, who passed away on April 12, 2025, at the age of 74, was honoured with a series of tributes and ceremonies that spanned over ten days, drawing the participation of national leaders, sports icons, and fans across Nigeria.

Speaking at the burial, Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State described the funeral as the final chapter in a series of events that celebrated Chukwu’s extraordinary life from tribute nights in Lagos and Enugu to a colloquium in his honour.

“For me, and I believe for so many others, it is difficult to have met Chairman without being inspired by his simplicity and humility,” Mbah said.

“Without a doubt, he was disciplined, dignified, polite, and empathetic.”

The governor assured the family of the state’s continued support and reaffirmed his government’s commitment to immortalising Chukwu.

“As a government, we will always stand by you and ensure that Chukwu is immortalised. He served and loved Enugu and Nigeria with all his heart,” he said.

In his homily, Rt. Rev. Samuel Ike, Anglican Bishop of Enugu Diocese, praised Chukwu’s impact on both football and his community.

“Chukwu was a strong man who led his team through battles and emerged victorious—be it with Rangers or the Super Eagles. His generosity extended beyond the pitch and into his church and family life,” Bishop Ike noted.

Chukwu remains one of Nigeria’s most celebrated defenders.

Born in Enugu, he captained both Enugu Rangers and the Super Eagles, leading Nigeria to its historic first Africa Cup of Nations victory in 1980.

His leadership qualities later saw him coach both teams with distinction, earning a reputation for discipline, humility, and football excellence.

In recognition of his achievements, he received the National Honour following the 1980 Nations Cup triumph and was later awarded the African Football Legend Award in 2012.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Chukwuemeka Chukwu Jr. expressed gratitude to those who gathered to honour his father.

“We thank everyone for the love and respect shown to our father. His legacy lives on through each of you.”

Among the dignitaries present were; Mr. Peter Obi, former Labour Party presidential candidate, Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau, NFF President, represented by NNL Chairman, Mr. George Aluo, Senator Victor Umeh, representing Anambra Central and members of the Enugu Executive Council.

Others are; Retired Anglican Archbishop Rt. Rev. Emmanuel Chukwuma, former Rangers players and sports administrators, including Chief Nnanna Atuonwu and former Chairman of Enugu Sports Club.
