The management of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) has announced a new policy banning all social activities on campus beyond 6:00 pm, following a tragic stabbing incident that claimed the life of a local businessman.
The directive was issued in a statement signed by the Acting Public Relations Officer of the university, Mr. Inya Egwu.
According to the statement, the decision was prompted by the events of September 12, when a man identified as Chiebonam Nweze, popularly known as Power-Autos, was fatally stabbed during a student-organized event.
Nweze had been attending a bonfire night organized by the Students’ Association of the Department of Archaeology and Heritage Studies when violence broke out.
“Henceforth, the UNN management has directed that all such activities must be held strictly during the daytime and under the supervision of the University Security Unit,” the statement read.
The management further stressed: “Social events of any kind will not be permitted on our campuses beyond 6:00 pm. henceforth.”
The university noted that the bonfire event was hijacked by miscreants from a neighbouring community, who instigated the violence that led to Nweze’s death.
While strongly condemning the incident, the university also reassured students, staff, and the public of its dedication to campus safety.
“UNN remains fully committed to ensuring a safe and secure environment for all members of its community and will continue to take every necessary measure to prevent a recurrence of such an incident,” the statement added.
The university did not disclose whether further investigations or arrests have been made in connection with the tragedy.
