Labour Party Stakeholders Okays Formation Of Transition Committee

Stakeholders convened on Monday and unanimously endorsed the establishment of a Transition Committee tasked with overseeing the affairs of the Labour Party and orchestrating a national convention within the next three months.

The committee, comprising members representing diverse segments of the Labour Party, is set to be unveiled following the conclusion of the Eid-el-Fitr holidays.

This decision was reached during a Stakeholders meeting organized by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Political Commission in Abuja.

In a released statement following the meeting, stakeholders discredited the previously held national convention in Nnewi, Anambra State, deeming it insignificant and devoid of legitimacy.

The communique read: “Owing to the current vacuum in the leadership of the Labour Party, the NLC Political Commission consequent on its status in the Constitution of the Labour Party as a registered trustee of the Labour Party, a status that was further buttressed by a Federal High Court Consent Judgement delivered on March 20, 2018 by Justice Gabriel Kolawole, convened this Stakeholders meeting to address the leadership void in the Labour Party and to discuss the repositioning of Labour Party to deliver its mandate as the political vehicle for the emancipation of Nigerian workers and people.

“Resolutions of the Stakeholders’ Meeting

“The Stakeholders Meeting noted the vacuum in the leadership of the Labour Party following the expiration of the supposed tenure of the immediate past National Working Committee of the Labour Party.

“The Stakeholders Meeting affirmed and validated the intervention of the Nigeria Labour Congress through her Political Commission as the only body recognised by the Constitution of the Labour Party and Justice Kolawole’s Consent Judgement to act as trustee in a situation of leadership vacuum as is currently the case in the Labour Party.

“The Stakeholders Meeting following the unanimous adoption of a motion moved to accept the recommendations made in the address by the NLC Political Commission Chairman resolved that in order to reposition the Labour Party from a mere platform for contesting elections to a viable political vehicle for the emancipation of Nigerian workers and people the following steps must be taken immediately:

“Constitution of a Transition Committee under the leadership of the NLC Political Commission and working with all stakeholders with a mandate to set up structures at national, state, local government and ward level for the conduct of an all-inclusive and expansive national convention of the Labour Party.

“The Stakeholders Meeting passed a vote of no-confidence on the purported Labour Party national convention held in Nnewi, Anambra State and regards as inconsequential the leadership that claims to have emerged from the illegal Nnewi Convention.

“That the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and all the relevant security organisations in Nigeria are hereby notified and should be officially written immediately to recognise the Transition Committee as the interim leadership of the Labour Party pending the conduct of an all-inclusive and expansive National Convention of the Labour Party.

“That the Transition Committee once constituted should fully take over the secretariats of the Labour Party all over Nigeria.

“That the Transition Committee shall immediately set up an assets recovery process of all the properties of the Labour Party. The Transition Committee shall also ensure that all the cases of fraud, impersonation and forgery of government documents pending against a few discredited former officers of the Labour Party are forensically audited and culprits are diligently prosecuted as demanded by leader of the Labour Party – Mr. Peter Obi. It is unfortunate that the actions of these few dishonourable characters have splashed mud on the white satin of Labour Party.

“That the Transition Committee shall within three months of its constitution ensure the conduct of an inclusive national convention of the Labour Party starting from ward congresses to local government congresses to state congresses culminating in an all-inclusive and expansive National Convention in Abuja.

“Pursuant to the foregoing, the Transition Committee is mandated by the Stakeholders Meeting to begin the process of revalidation of current members of the Labour Party and the registration of new members through the issuance of new membership cards and receipt of membership dues for the purpose of the conduct of an all-inclusive and expansive national convention of the Labour Party. It is expected that this mobilisation drive will yield in the first instance a total membership strength of 10 million

“Labour Party card carrying members drawn from across all workplaces, marketplaces, professional groups, ethnic and religious organisations that Nigerian workers and people belong to.

“The Stakeholders Meeting recognises, affirms and commends the support of critical stakeholders in the Labour Party for their continued support and faith in Labour Party. We promise that your steadfast solidarity will surely count!

“Finally, we reiterate that the Labour Party is a Party for all Nigerians regardless of ethnic, religious, regional, social and economic orientation or status.”

The communique was signed by Professor Theophilus Ndubuaku For: Chairman, NLC Political Commission, Comrade Abdulwahed Omar, former President, Nigeria Labour Congress, Comrade Sylvester .O.Z. Ejiofor Chairman, Board of Trustees, Labour Party and Engr. Gambo Daniel Balarabe National Coordinator.

Others were, Dr. Moses Paul (Mo) Coordinator, Obidient Movement, Chief Yohana Yilpwan Margif Labour Party Plateau State Governorship Candidate,

Dr. Kingsley Oghogho Okundaye Coordinator, LPPMC, Hon. Jonathan Asake Kaduna State Labour Party Governorship Candidate and Barr. Ihekwoaba Paul, for Disabled Persons in Labour Party.

Court Orders Nollywood Actress To Pay N10 Million For Defaming Apostle Suleiman

Apostle Johnson Suleiman

In a ruling by the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja, Nollywood actress, Halima Abubakar has been ordered to pay the sum of N10 million to Apostle Johnson Suleiman, the founder of Omega Fire Ministries International.

The court, presided over by Justice Enobie Obanor, deemed this amount as aggravated and general damages for the defamatory posts made by the actress against the cleric on social media.

Advertorial

The court instructed Abubakar to retract all defamatory statements made against Apostle Suleiman via her Instagram handle, @Halimabubakar.

This judgement stems from a defamation suit filed by the cleric, who alleged that the actress made several libellous statements on her social media platform, accusing him of womanizing and being diabolical.

Apostle Suleiman highlighted specific derogatory posts made by Abubakar, including accusations of infidelity and irresponsibility.

These false allegations, he argued, tarnished his reputation in the eyes of the public.

Despite being served with court documents, Abubakar did not appear in court or appoint legal representation, leading to the court ruling in favor of Apostle Suleiman.

The judgement, delivered on March 27 and certified on April 8, underscores the seriousness of defamation and the legal consequences for those found guilty of spreading false information.

“This issue is therefore resolved in favour of the claimant. Accordingly, judgment is entered in favour of the claimant as follows:

“A declaration that the statements published by the defendant against the Claimant on her Instagram handle @halimabubakar, falsely and maliciously written and published to the general public, are defamatory of the person of the claimant.

“The sum of N10,000,000.00 only to the Claimant as aggravated and exemplary damages for libel contained in the publication of the defendant against the claimant on her Instagram handle @Halimabubakar and caused to be published in several blogs.

“An order of this Honourable Court compelling the defendant to pay for the deleting of all links and reportage of the said defamatory comments on all platforms on the internet,” Justice Obano held.

Wadume’s Heroic Welcome Sparks Mixed Reactions

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) confirmed on Sunday the release of kidnapping kingpin, Hamisu Bala (popularly known as Wadume) from its Correctional Centre in Kuje on Friday.

Bala was set free after completing his seven-year prison term, as confirmed by NCoS officials.

Upon his release, reports indicate that he received a warm welcome from a large crowd in his hometown of Ibbi, Taraba State, on Sunday.

He was greeted by thousands of people, including youths and women, upon his arrival, with reports suggesting that he was ferried into Ibbi through the river Benue.

Wadume also visited the traditional ruler of his village to express gratitude for the support he received during his trials.

However, his release from prison has sparked mixed reactions on social media platforms.

While some expressed disbelief and criticized the celebration of a convicted criminal, others questioned the justice system and societal attitudes towards crime and punishment in Nigeria.

@MaiAgogon tweeted: “Wadume receives a heroic welcome. Wadume din dai? We’re not serious at all wallahi.”

@MizCazorla1 commented: “Wadume, the kidnap kingpin FREED. Evans, the kidnapper bags 21yrs imprisonment. Remember some police officers were shot dead while trying to arrest wadume. What’s the difference between Wadume & Evans crimes? Nigeria’s justice system”

@Abdurashid24 wrote: “What a country where we celebrate criminals as heroes Some Leaders of tomorrow go dey emulate wadume as their role model.”

@peculiaryoel raised questions about societal attitudes towards crime and punishment, stating: “The large crowd welcoming ‘Wadume’ back to his hometown raises questions about societal attitudes towards crime and punishment. Are we celebrating the return of someone who caused harm to others, or is there a deeper issue at play regarding justice and accountability in our communities?”

@Olumide504 expressed concerns about the justice system’s impact on criminal behavior, saying: “Heroic welcome for wadume! But Nigeria justice system needs revisitation. This sentence may encourage more criminal-minded persons to do evil. I’m aware soldiers & police life were lost in the process for his arrest and being a gun runner. It’s a pity.”

Court Orders Remand Of ‘Ijele Speaks’ Over Alleged Threat To Life On Evang. Ebuka Obi

Evang. Ebuka Obi

An Abuja Chief Magistrate Court, sitting at Wuse Zone 6, has extended the remand of social media content creator Mr. Chizorom Harrison Ofoegbu, popularly known as Ijele Speaks, at Keffi Correctional Center. The remand is in connection with his alleged involvement in cybercrimes.

Chief Magistrate Emmanuel Iyanna ordered Ofoegbu to remain in custody until April 12, pending the court’s ruling on his bail applicationapplication.

Advertorial

Ofoegbu is facing charges of criminal intimidation, threat to life, cyberstalking, and cyberbullying against Evangelist Ebuka Obi, the founder and spiritual director of Zion Prayer Movement.

During Monday’s proceedings, Ofoegbu’s counsel, Mr. Marvin Omorogbe, requested the court to set aside the remand order and release his client from Keffi Correctional Center. Alternatively, he urged the court to grant bail to Ofoegbu.

Omorogbe argued that the Police misrepresented facts, leading to the remand order against his client. He emphasized that the Police falsely claimed to have filed a criminal charge against Ofoegbu before a Federal High Court in Abuja.

In response, police lawyer Mr. Obiora Ejiofor opposed the bail application, stating that there was insufficient evidence to warrant bail. He informed the court that the Police had filed a 4-count criminal charge against Ofoegbu at the Federal High Court in Abuja, as the Magistrate court lacked jurisdiction for the charges.

Omorogbe countered by alleging that the exhibits attached to the police’s counter affidavit were forged, urging the court not to give them credence.

He also argued that the remand order obtained by the police had expired due to lack of renewal.

After hearing arguments from both sides, Chief Magistrate Iyanna adjourned the matter for ruling.

Ofoegbu’s arrest stemmed from allegations that he threatened to kill Evangelist Ebuka Obi and made inflammatory remarks on social media. These actions led to a petition to the Inspector General of Police, resulting in Ofoegbu’s arrest and detention in Abuja.

Shaibu Lambasts Edo Assembly Over Impeachment, Threatens Legal Action

Former Deputy Governor of Edo State, Comrade Philip Shaibu, has strongly criticized the members of the Edo State House of Assembly for his impeachment on Monday.

Shaibu, who has been at odds with Governor Godwin Obaseki, was ousted from office by the lawmakers following the adoption of a report by a seven-man investigative panel probing allegations of misconduct against him.

Advertorial

In response to his removal, Obaseki swiftly announced the appointment of a 38-year-old engineer as the new deputy governor.

Expressing his disdain for the impeachment, Shaibu accused the lawmakers of betrayal and subversion of justice, warning that history would harshly judge them for their actions.

In a video posted on his social media account shortly after the impeachment, Shaibu condemned the Assembly members for forsaking their oath of office and urged the judiciary and relevant authorities to intervene to uphold the principles of justice and fairness.

He attributed his impeachment to his ambition to contest the Edo Governorship election in 2024 under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), describing it as a legal right.

Shaibu labeled the impeachment as an attack on democratic principles and a dangerous descent into dictatorship, emphasizing that it threatened the foundation of democracy.

Addressing the people of Edo State, Shaibu expressed gratitude for their support during the challenging circumstances and vowed to challenge his impeachment through legal means.
