Iran: Bomb Kills Over 103 During Memorial For Slain General

Iranian emergency services arrive at the site where two explosions in quick succession struck a crowd marking the anniversary of the 2020 killing of Guards general Qasem Soleimani, near the Saheb al-Zaman Mosque in the southern Iranian city of Kerman on January 3, 2024. - The blasts, which state television called a "terrorist attack", came with tensions running high in the Middle East a day after Hamas number two was killed in a Beirut drone strike. At least 103 people were killed in Iran Wednesday as two bombs in quick succession struck a crowd commemorating slain general Qasem Soleimani on the anniversary of his killing, state media reported.

The blasts, which state television called a “terrorist attack”, came with tensions running high in the Middle East a day after Hamas number two Saleh al-Aruri – an Iran ally – was killed in a drone attack on a Beirut southern suburb which Lebanese officials blamed on Israel.

The blasts stuck near the Saheb al-Zaman Mosque in Kerman, Soleimani’s southern hometown where he is buried, as supporters gathered to mark the fourth anniversary of his killing in a US drone strike just outside Baghdad airport.

Kerman’s deputy governor, Rahman Jalali, said the explosions were a “terrorist attack”.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.

“The number of people killed rose to 103 following the death of people injured during the terrorist explosions,” said official IRNA news agency, which earlier reported 73 deaths.

Another 141 people were wounded in the bombings, IRNA said, adding that some were in “critical condition”.

Iran’s Tasnim news agency, quoting informed sources, said “two bags carrying bombs went off” at the site.

“The perpetrators… of this incident apparently detonated the bombs by remote control,” Tasnim added.

The ISNA news agency quoted Kerman mayor Saeed Tabrizi as saying the bombs exploded 10 minutes apart.

“We were walking towards the cemetery when a car suddenly stopped behind us and a waste bin containing a bomb exploded,” an eyewitness was quoted by ISNA as saying.

“We only heard the sound of the explosion and saw people falling. There was a bomb in the trash can,” the witness added.

Online footage showed crowds scrambling to flee as security personnel cordoned off the area.

Among the 73 killed were three paramedics who were dispatched to the area following the first explosion, according to Iran’s Red Crescent.

Soleimani headed the Quds Force, the foreign operations arm of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, overseeing military operations across the Middle East.

Declared a “living martyr” by Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei while still alive, Soleimani was widely regarded as a hero for his role in defeating the Islamic State jihadist group in both Iraq and Syria.

In the eyes of many Iranians, his military and strategic prowess were instrumental in warding off the multi-ethnic disintegration of neighbouring countries such as Afghanistan as well as Syria and Iraq.

Long seen as a deadly adversary by the US and its allies, Soleimani was one of the most important powerbrokers across the region, setting Iran’s political and military agenda in Syria, Iraq and Yemen.

On days after his death in 2020 and leading up to his funeral in Kerman, millions turned out to mourn in a show of national unity.

A survey published in 2018 by IranPoll and the University of Maryland found Soleimani had a popularity rating in Iran of 83 per cent, ahead of then-president Hassan Rouhani and then-foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif.

2027: Coalition Will Remove Tinubu From Power – Atiku’s Former Aide

Former spokesperson of Atiku presidential campaign organisation, Daniel Bwala has said that there will be a coalition of political parties in 2027 to remove President Bola Ahmed Tinubu from power.

Advertorial

He said Tinubu used some people in the opposition parties to create internal crises so he could be reelected in 2027.

When asked if the PDP can put itself together and form a strong opposition in 2027, Bwala said “the truth of the matter is that there will be a coalition of political parties that will be very strong. This is a fact I know and I don’t want to talk about the details.”

He noted that the upcoming coalition would swallow some of the elements creating problems in many political parties.

“If you want to remove Tinubu from power, you must work 23 hours and 50 minutes. You have only 10 minutes to sleep. The 10 minutes you have to sleep is when Tinubu will be sleeping.

“Look at what he is doing as a strategic action. If you look at his antecedent in Lagos, once he took over the government he made sure that the oppositions were either obliterated or weak. Look at what is happening.

“Some elements in the NNPP came out and said they suspended its presidential candidate. In Labour you see what the Apapa group did. They will never allow somebody to rest. In the PDP you have seen some elements. He (Tinubu) will make sure all the political parties continue to have problems.”

“But once there is a coalition of the parties, some of these people that are giving the headache in the political parties would have been swallowed. For example, once you solved the Wike question in PDP you would have solved all the problems,” Bwala added.

The governor said the civil service would be repositioned for accountability, and Ondo would be opened up for more investment. He also used the occasion to announce that all arrears owed workers in the state service, particularly the outstanding salary in 2017, would be paid in due course.

Mr Aiyedatiwa, who spoke on the 2024 governorship election, urged workers in public service to refrain from partisan politics and politics of bitterness.

The Ondo governor said, “The year 2024 promises to be prosperous in all facets of our lives, particularly in our quest as an administration to improve the value and dignity of the service. We are clear in our vision of a better tomorrow, which the people of Ondo state will be proud of, irrespective of religious and political affiliations.

“I have conviction that the new year will be an eventful year. I can say that, given the judicious implementation of our year 2024 budget. It will bring some succour amidst the economic challenges facing the people. No administration can fly higher than the delivery capacity and ability of its bureaucracy.”

Mr Aiyedatiwa added, “It is also true that working in one accord with the bureaucracy, the political authorities can surmount most of the hurdles in its way to meeting with developmental programmes, policies and projects.

“Therefore, my dear workers, I am pleased to hear your good testimonies of payment of salaries, prompt promotion, payment of inherited salaries in arrears, training and retraining, provision of working tools and enabling environment for the service to thrive, among others.

“I also want to assure you that the fraction of the outstanding salary left will be cleared soon.”

Meanwhile, the national vice-chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Sunday Adeleye, appealed to the federal and state governments to re-strategise the approach to cushion the effect of subsidy in 2024.

Mr Adeleye said there was a need for urgent implementation of the new minimum wage and a commitment to the welfare of workers and Nigerians.

Japan Plane Catches Fire At Tokyo Airport

A Japan Airlines plane was in flames on the runway of Tokyo’s Haneda Airport on Tuesday after apparently colliding with a coast guard aircraft, television reports said.

The images on broadcaster NHK showed the plane moving along the runway before an explosion of orange flames burst from beneath and behind it.

All 367 passengers on board the Airbus plane were evacuated, broadcaster NHK reported.

The cause of the incident was not immediately clear, but television reports said that the Airbus collided with a Coast Guard aircraft.

Reports said that the plane had just arrived from Sapporo airport on the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido.

A Coast Guard official at Haneda Airport, one of the world’s busiest, said they were “checking details”.

“It’s not clear if there was a collision. But it is certain that our plane is involved,” he told AFP.

The television footage showed flames coming out of windows and the plane’s nose on the ground as rescue workers sprayed it.

There was also burning debris on the runway.

More than 70 fire engines were being deployed, NHK reported.

Japan has not suffered a serious commercial aviation accident in decades.

Its worst ever was in 1985, when a JAL jumbo jet flying from Tokyo to Osaka crashed in the central Gunma region, killing 520 passengers and crew.

That disaster was one of the world’s deadliest plane crashes involving a single flight.
