Rivers Political Civil War: Tinubu Laud Fubara’s Commitment To Peace

President Tinubu on Tuesday commended the embattled governor of Rivers state, Siminalayi Fubara for his commitment to toeing the part of peace in the political civil war that ensued between him and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike.

The president singled him out for recognition among members of the Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF), who visited him in Lagos on Boxing Day.

Noting that good governance can only occur in an atmosphere of peace, the president praised the Rivers governor for statesmanship.

Tension had enveloped the state, following the outbreak of disagreement between the governor and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike.

Although the President had initially intervened in the crisis, the gladiators went back home to resume hostilities.

Irked by Fubara’s position, 27 lawmakers, led by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, commenced impeachment proceedings against him while four lawmakers secured an ex-parte injunction which recognised Edison Ehie as Speaker.

To forestall the degeneration of the conflict into violence, President Tinubu intervened for the second time and brockered a truce signed by the two parties at Aso Villa.

Supporters of the governor objected to the peace deal, saying that it was undemocratic and dictatorial.

But Fubara, in a Christmas Day broadcast, reiterated his commitment to the peace deal aimed at fostering tranquility.

President Tinubu said yesterday: “I thank you for your statesmanship. I listened to your broadcast and your emphasis on peace. It is only with peace that effective governance can thrive, and governance has commenced in earnest under my watch”

Eyes are on Fubara and the Martins Amaewhule-led House of Assembly to fully implement the eight items contained in the peace resolutions.

Out of the eight-point resolution, only two had been fully implemented; one by Fubara and one by the House of Assembly.

While the Amaewhule-led House, a day after the meeting, implemented resolution two by withdrawing an impeachment notice, Fubara confirmed that he had enforced item four by paying the withheld entitlements of the lawmakers.

Many people believe that the loyalists of the factional Speaker Ehie are behind the protests because Ehie’s interest was not captured in any of the eight-point resolution.

Efforts by the Amaewhule-led House to withdraw motions it filed in a suit instituted by Fubara in obedience to the ‘Resolution Number One’ have proved abortive due to some legal hurdles.

While the lawmakers’ counsel tried to withdraw the motions, Fubara’s lawyer said he had not received a mandate from his client to withdraw the main suit.

When the Rivers State High Court sitting in Isiokpo, Ikwerre Local Government Area, resumes on January 31, Fubara’s case and the lawmakers’ motions would be withdrawn.

Rivers people are anxiously waiting for the House to reconvene after the Yuletide to see whether Resolutions Three and Five mandating the governor to recognise the Amaewhule-led House and allow them to choose its place of sitting would be implemented.

Stakeholders are also waiting to see whether the governor would implement Resolutions Six and Seven requesting him to re-present his already signed budget to a fully constituted House of Assembly and to reappoint commissioners, who resigned during the crisis.

Despite the pressure mounted on the governor by persons, who felt their interests would be jeopardised with the full implementation of the agreement, Fubara had reinstated his commitment to the peace pact.

The governor said having studied the terms of the proclamation, he “has come to the conclusion that the peace pact is not as bad as it might be portrayed by those genuinely opposed to it”.

He insisted that the peace accord “is not a death sentence”, describing it as opportunity to achieve the needed stability in the state.

No Peace In Gaza Until Hamas Is Completely Destroyed, Israeli Prime Minister

Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu has insisted peace can only be achieved in Gaza if Hamas is destroyed, the territory demilitarised and Palestinian society “deradicalised”, after warning the war is set to intensify.

The declarations came as the World Health Organization on Monday reported “harrowing” accounts of entire families killed from Christmas Eve strikes on a refugee camp in Gaza.

Relentless Israeli strikes have devastated the Palestinian territory and the conflict has heightened tensions across the Middle East, with global pressure for a ceasefire mounting.

But in an op-ed published in the Wall Street Journal on Monday night, Netanyahu vowed to stay the course.

“Hamas must be destroyed, Gaza must be demilitarised, and Palestinian society must be deradicalised. These are the three prerequisites for peace between Israel and its Palestinian neighbours in Gaza,” Netanyahu said.

He said demilitarisation “will require establishing a temporary security zone on the perimeter” of the territory.

“For the foreseeable future Israel will have to retain overriding security responsibility over Gaza,” he said.

Earlier on Monday Netanyahu visited Gaza, telling a meeting of his Likud party after his return: “We’re not stopping”.

“We’re intensifying the fighting in the coming days,” he said, according to a party statement.

‘Harrowing accounts’
The war in Gaza erupted when Palestinian militants broke through the militarised border and attacked southern Israel on October 7, killing about 1,140 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on Israeli figures.

Fighters also seized about 250 hostages, Israel says.

Israel vowed to crush Hamas in response, and launched a retaliatory military campaign including extensive aerial bombardment and a siege of the territory. The campaign has killed at least 20,674 people, mostly women and children, according to Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry.

On Monday, some residents of Al-Maghazi refugee camp returned to the ruins of their homes after strikes the previous day that Gaza’s health ministry said killed at least 70 people. AFP was unable to independently verify that toll.

Zeyad Awad said there was no evacuation warning before the strikes.

“What should we do? We are civilians, living peacefully and wanting only safety and security,” he said.

“Yet we are suddenly struck by Israeli warplanes without any warning.”

WHO staff visited a hospital treating victims of the Al-Maghazi strikes.

The “team heard harrowing accounts shared by health workers and victims”, the UN health agency’s chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on social media.

“One child had lost their whole family in the strike on the camp. A nurse at the hospital suffered the same loss,” he added.

Sean Casey, a WHO emergency medical teams coordinator who joined the mission to the hospital, described the fate of a nine-year-old being treated who was expected to die.

“He was crossing the street in front of the shelter where his family is staying and the building beside him blew up,” he said.

The Israeli army said it was “reviewing the incident”, adding it was “committed to international law including taking feasible steps to minimise harm to civilians”.

Fubara‘s Acceptance Of Tinubu’s Peace Proclamation, A Ploy To Buy Time Ahead Of Supreme Court Judgment – APC Chieftain

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, has declared that Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara‘s acceptance of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s peace proclamation was “not holistic,” describing it as “just a ploy to buy time pending when the Supreme Court decides on the gubernatorial election of the State come January 2024.”

Governor Fubara, in his 2023 Christmas Day broadcast, accepted the resolutions presented by President Tinubu during a recent peace parley in Abuja, promising to implement them fully.

However, Eze, in a statement released on Tuesday in Port Harcourt, the state capital, argues that Fubara’s acceptance serves only as a temporary respite for those opposed to him pending the Supreme Court’s ruling on the Rivers State gubernatorial election in January 2024.

He said, “Governor Fubara’s acceptance of the resolution is not holistic and serves only as a temporary respite for FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike and his circle of voyagers pending the Supreme Court ruling on Rivers State gubernatorial election come January 2024.

“The fact remains that President Tinubu is fully aware those directives can’t be implemented by any sound fellow if not to disgrace Wike and his misguided followers.

“But Governor Fubara’s acceptance to implement the truce is just a ploy to buy time pending when the Supreme Court decides on the gubernatorial election of the State come January 2024 and if Fubara succeeds, it is then they will know if Fubara will truly implement the worthless directive or not.”

Reopening Of Collapsed Enugu Bridge Postponed

Enugu State Government says it has to postpone the reopening of one lane of the collapsed Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway Bridge following expert’s advice.

The government stated that it received advice from the Project Manager, Mr Mohammed Fadi, not to reopen the bridge “for safety purposes” until it had been fully completed.

The Commissioner for Information and Communication, Aka-Eze Aka, disclosed this in a statement issued in Enugu and made available to newsmen on Monday.

The News Agency of Nigeria recalls that the Commissioner for Works, Mr Gerald Otiji, had said at a post-State Executive Council meeting briefing that one lane of the bridge would be reopened to motorists to ease traffic during the Yuletide celebrations.

But Aka stated that the bridge would no longer be reopened as announced, saying that based on the expert’s advice the bridge should on completion be subjected to a series of integrity tests, to certify it fit for public use.

“Due to the traffic congestion being experienced in the area, which is a major link road, the state government had asked that one lane of the bridge that was standing be opened to ease traffic and relieve motorists of stress, especially this festive season.

“This, however, is no longer feasible because of expert and technical advice.

“As a matter of emphasis, the government is not unaware of the difficulties created by the collapsed bridge, but appeals for understanding and patience from road users as works on the bridge will soon be completed,” Aka stated. (NAN)

“Furthermore, our current setbacks should not stop us as a people from aspiring to overcome present difficulties and realize the full potential of our blessed country.

“I therefore enjoin you to use this great feast to offer special supplications to God for our country so that we can have the opportunity of joining others in the global community to give thanks to God for the abundant gifts he lavished on us as a nation. As leaders, we must embrace the spirit of this season which emphasizes charity.

“We never launched any attack on them. They are the ones attacking and attacking and we don’t really understand why they are attacking us.

“The death toll now. Well the death toll from Bokkos local government now is 125.”

Palliatives Won’t Solve Nigeria’s Problems – Bishop Kukah Tells FG

Bishop Mathew Kukah, the Bishop of Sokoto Catholic Diocese, has expressed his perspective on the ongoing government palliatives, stating that they do not offer effective solutions to the challenges faced by Nigerians.

Kukah in his Christmas message theme, “Time to Reclaim Nigeria’s Greatness” said the problems are deep and are structural, calling on President Bola Tinubu not to be afraid to reset the template of power no matter the cultural or historical myths. “We are tired of promises and stories. We want evidence we can see and touch”

He also called on the President to stop the killings of Nigerians by whatever name must end and end now. “These senseless killings, abductions, extortions and kidnappings have to end and the sacredness and sanctity of human life restored. Blasphemy laws have no place in a democracy. We are not in a theocracy.

“Those who take life by whatever means must be fished out and punished. A culture of compensation to victims must be institutionalised and states must take full responsibility while criminals or those who hide them are fished out. We cannot go on this way. The seeds of hatred that have sprouted in Gaza show us the consequences of allowing a culture of distorted narratives to grow among us.

“You must rid the public service of criminals who have turned the opportunity to serve into an ignoble enterprise. We concede that there are millions of decent men and women who genuinely wish to serve but are crushed by the deadweight of corrupt ogas at the top who use corruption as their oxygen! This surgery must happen if you are to succeed in any of your dreams of delivering much-needed services to our people.

He also spoke on the 2023 elections and their consequences on the nation so far, and called on leaders on every front to as a matter of urgency find healing as soon as possible. He explained that this is not an easy job for any nation and there are no shortcuts to nation-building.

He however said the last few years did test our collective resolve to stay united. “Now, the government must devise strategies for achieving reconciliation which has eluded us.

“Our injuries are not invisible. Very many National Conferences have been held to chart a way forward. The trove of grievances and hopes is there and all the government needs to do is to dust them up. No need to reinvent the wheel or attempt some new diagnosis.

He further said, “Mr. President, Sir, congratulations and a happy Christmas. Now, you have what you prayed for, what you dreamt of, what you longed for. For the better part of over twenty years, you have plotted to be our President. For years, you campaigned for a new Nigeria through restructuring or overhauling the defective machinery of the Nigerian state.

“For years, you fought the military and other forms of dictatorships. For years, you fought for the victims of a deep state. For years, you sought to create an egalitarian society. For years, you sought a just society. For years you have built networks with individuals, communities and institutions. Now is harvest time.

“You are on the driving seat now. Under your watch, Nigeria must turn the corner. Under your watch, we must end the ugly instrumentalization of religious, ethnic or regional identities. You have had enough time to think of the answers to many questions that are crying for answers. Your future and that of our country is in your hands.

” Mr President, you have no excuses before God or the people of Nigeria. Neither God nor history will not forgive you if you fail. This is our moment, our date with history. Now, all eyes and ears are on you. Our prayers for a united country are with you.

“We have seen the first faltering steps of policy decisions which have elicited a mixture of controversy, anxiety and praise. This is to be expected. You have promised us a Renewed Hope Agenda, but know that hope has worn thin in our dear nation.

“Nigerians have almost lost hope in the fact that a government can really and truly care for them. Nigerians have lost hope in the fact that our politicians will put our interests first and find a way to deal with the cancer of corruption. We had lost hope in being united again given the seeds of division that had been sown. Ignite our hope again, Sir.

“We now have seen some renewed hope in your effort to run an inclusive government. We want an end to partisanship. The problems of Nigeria are deep-seated and they are based on a culture of corruption that has become the foundation stone of governance. This evil structure has to be dismantled.

“To be able to have credibility, your Renewed Hope agenda must be based on a solid foundation of faith and hope for the restoration of glory for our country. So far, a few of your key policies have unleashed a raft of suffering on the masses of our people. There must be a deliberate effort to restore hope on the faces of the poor and vulnerable in our society.

“We have heard the familiar stories of empty treasuries and the efforts at investigations. We wait to see if anything will be different. Lay the foundation for ending the unnecessary sufferings of our people”

Kukah also appealed to Nigerians to continue to have faith in the country and stay the course in hope. “God will do great things for our nation, but we each must renew our commitment towards self-examination and repentance.

“Good politics and good politicians can bring about change, but all of these require the commitment and honesty of citizens to be honest at all levels. I therefore call on Christians in particular in this season to become real models of our faith.

“The call to be a Christian is not a call to join an Association or a Club. The fourteenth-century English poet Alexander Pope who said, “Christ may be born a thousand times in Bethlehem, but if he is not born in your heart, his birth has no meaning for you.”
