Nigeria Condemns Attempted Coup In Benin Republic

Nigeria has strongly denounced the attempted seizure of power in the Republic of Benin in the early hours of Sunday, December 7, 2025.

In an official statement, the Federal Government described the incident as a direct attack on democracy, constitutional order, and the will of the Beninese people.

Nigeria also affirmed its full support for the Benin government and pledged continued cooperation.

The statement, signed by Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said in part:

“The Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria received with grave concern the attempted forcible takeover in our friendly and brotherly nation, the Republic of Benin. We unequivocally condemn this act of destabilisation, which threatens democracy and the constitutional order.”

“Nigeria stands in firm solidarity with the Government and people of Benin and commends the swift action of Beninese authorities to protect their institutions and maintain peace.”

Nigeria also praised the Beninese security forces for their professionalism and bravery in safeguarding the President and defending the nation’s democratic order, ensuring the coup attempt was decisively thwarted.

The statement emphasized Nigeria’s ongoing commitment to democracy, good governance, and the rule of law, which are key for peace, development, and stability in the region.

It also called on all parties in Benin to remain calm and pursue political discourse through lawful and democratic channels.

As a committed member of ECOWAS and the African Union, Nigeria urged other African nations and the international community to join in condemning the coup attempt and in reaffirming support for democratic principles, including the African Union Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance and the ECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance.

“The Federal Government of Nigeria reassures the Government of the Republic of Benin of its full support and continued cooperation as we work together to deepen democracy and ensure lasting peace and prosperity for our peoples and the entire West African region,” the statement concluded.

IPOB Encourages Ndigbo To Celebrate Christmas In South-East, Assures Safety, Peace

The proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has called on Ndigbo both in Nigeria and the Diaspora to return home for Christmas celebrations, assuring them of security and peace throughout the South-East during the festive season.

In a statement on Sunday, IPOB spokesperson Emma Powerful described the South-East as Nigeria’s “most tranquil” region, noting that security conditions have improved significantly despite what he called “sponsored instability” over the past four years.

Powerful urged Igbos not to be misled by “propaganda” against IPOB and its security arm, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), stressing that both organizations, with community support, have played a key role in maintaining relative calm.

“The global family of IPOB, under the leadership of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, encourages Ndigbo planning to return home for Christmas to do so safely, as ESN operatives and IPOB volunteers will ensure security across the entire South-East region,” he said.

He added that the inherent peacefulness of the Igbo people has contributed to the stability of the region and encouraged returnees to consider investing in their homeland during the festive period.

Powerful also refuted viral social media claims about passenger kidnappings at Ngor Okpala along the Owerri–Aba Expressway, labeling the footage as “old” and “false.”

“The absence of ongoing killings and abductions in the South-East is proof that there are ‘Lions’ safeguarding the land,” he stated, explaining that ESN operations are conducted discreetly and do not have official social media accounts.

He further accused the Federal Government and some Igbo politicians of attempts to undermine IPOB and ESN, insisting that the Biafra restoration movement remains “a sacred initiative.”

Powerful concluded by urging Ndigbo to ignore fear-driven narratives about insecurity and return home in large numbers for Christmas.

“Celebrate with your families, invest in your homeland, and do not let fear or false insecurity reports deter you,” he added.

2027: ADC Plotting To Destabilise Enugu, APC Alleges

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Enugu State has sounded the alarm over what it describes as an emerging plot by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to disrupt peace and political stability in the state ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The party called on residents across Enugu’s three senatorial districts to stay vigilant and resist any attempts by the ADC to undermine the long-standing governorship zoning arrangement that has ensured stability and political cohesion for decades.

Dr. Ben Nwoye, chairman of the APC State Caretaker Committee, issued the warning over the weekend during the inauguration of the party’s ward and local government executive committees in Nkanu West LGA.

He was accompanied by the committee’s secretary and former Speaker of the Enugu State House of Assembly, Barrister Eugene Odo.

According to Nwoye, the ADC has become a platform for disgruntled politicians seeking to disrupt the political stability of the state.

“Do not allow yourselves to be misled by the ADC. They aim to use you to create disunity and destabilisation,” he warned.

“These are politicians who are desperate to sabotage the governorship zoning formula that has guaranteed Enugu uninterrupted peace.”

Nwoye stressed that the zoning arrangement remains essential for the collective interest of the state, noting that Governor Peter Mbah’s achievements across various sectors justify continuity and his potential second term in line with the rotational agreement.

The inauguration in Nkanu West was part of the final phase of the APC’s statewide tour to install local government and ward executives across all 17 LGAs and 260 wards in Enugu State.

Other members of the state caretaker committee present included former Minister of State for Defence Ambassador Fidelia Njeze, Comrade Peter Chime, Dr. Oby Ajih, Dr. Chiedozie Nwafor, and Engr. Emma Ekeh.

They were welcomed by a large crowd of party supporters, stakeholders, and government officials.

Also present were the immediate past PDP State Chairman, Dr. Martin Chukwunweike, and the Governor’s Political Adviser, Hon. Frank Anioma.

Nwoye reiterated that the APC has emerged as the dominant party in Enugu, highlighting that Governor Mbah’s alignment with the APC has shifted the political landscape.

Recalling Mbah’s 2023 governorship rally, he said, “It was clear that the PDP was already weakened by internal conflicts, while Governor Mbah represented a leadership that could deliver results once aligned with the centre.”

Dr. Chukwunweike, former PDP Chairman, described the movement of political structures from the state to ward level into the APC as a reflection of “practical governance realities” and in the best interest of the people.

The APC’s statewide inauguration, which also covered Enugu North and Nkanu East LGAs, concluded this weekend after two weeks of an intensive tour by the Nwoye-led committee.

ECOWAS Condemns Failed Coup Attempt In Benin, Affirms Support For Constitutional Order

ECOWAS has strongly condemned the attempted military takeover in Benin, expressing deep concern over the development and urging full respect for the country’s Constitution.

The regional bloc issued a statement on Sunday after soldiers appeared on state television claiming to have ousted President Patrice Talon.

Despite the announcement, officials close to the president confirmed that he was safe and that loyal forces were regaining control of the situation.

ECOWAS said it was “dismayed” by the events and commended the efforts of the Beninese government and the Republican Army in swiftly containing the unrest.

The bloc warned that it holds the plotters individually and collectively responsible for any loss of life or property.

The group calling itself the Military Committee for Refoundation (CMR) had declared Talon removed from office, marking yet another attempted power grab in a region that has recently witnessed coups in Madagascar, Guinea-Bissau, Niger, and Burkina Faso.

The French Embassy reported gunfire near Camp Guezo, close to the president’s official residence, advising French nationals to remain indoors for safety.

Talon’s office described the incident as the actions of a small faction that temporarily gained access to the state broadcaster, insisting that the army was regaining control and that the country remained secure.

Nigerian Army Stops All Scheduled Retirements Amid Nationwide Security Emergency

The Nigerian Army has placed an indefinite suspension on both statutory and voluntary retirements for certain categories of officers, following directives tied to the nationwide security emergency declared by President Bola Tinubu.

The decision was contained in an internal memo dated 3 December 2025, signed by Major General E. I. Okoro on behalf of the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu.

According to the memo, the measure aims to maintain critical manpower and professional expertise as the Armed Forces intensify efforts to respond to escalating security threats across the country.

The document referenced the Harmonised Terms and Conditions of Service for Officers (HTACOS) 2024, which ordinarily stipulate retirement based on age limits for each rank, 35 years of service, or repeated failures in promotion or conversion processes.

However, the Army cited Paragraph 3.10(e), which grants authority to extend service when deemed necessary for military interest.

“Military service of a commissioned officer entails an unbroken period of service from commissioning or enlistment until retirement,” the memo explained, highlighting the standard rules governing exit from the service.

But the Army stressed that the extraordinary security situation necessitates temporary deviation from these norms.

The suspension applies to officers who have failed promotion exams three times, have been passed over for promotion three times, have reached the age ceiling for their rank, have failed conversion boards three times or have completed 35 years of service.

Officers affected may apply to extend their service beyond their scheduled retirement dates, though such an extension comes with limitations.

The memo clarified that officers granted extensions will not be eligible for promotions, career courses, sponsorships, secondments, or extra-regimental appointments.

Those who do not wish to continue in service are allowed to proceed with normal retirement procedures.

Nigerians Struggle As HIV Test Kits Run Out Amid Funding Cuts

Funding reductions by the United States government have significantly impacted Nigeria’s HIV response, creating acute shortages of HIV test kits in public hospitals and clinics nationwide.

Despite the Federal Government’s assurances of increased domestic funding and its pledge to eliminate AIDS as a public health threat by 2030, testing shortages persist.

For Danladi Adamu, a person living with HIV for over 25 years in Bauchi State, the announcement on January 20, 2025, that the US had paused foreign aid was a devastating blow.

“The announcement brought a lot of psychological trauma. Many of us rushed to treatment centers, hoping to stock up on medicines,” he recounted.

While antiretroviral drugs (ARTs) remain largely available, the supply of HIV test kits has been inconsistent.

Bauchi State NEPWHAN coordinator Abdullahi Ibrahim confirmed that test kits ran out in November 2025, hampering community testing efforts and slowing progress toward the 95-95-95 global target.

“If we can’t test, many people remain unaware of their status, and the virus spreads more easily,” he said.

The scarcity is not limited to the North-East. In the South-East, Enugu and Anambra States report limited availability of test kits.

Amaka Adindu, a PLHIV in Anambra, said that while drug supplies stabilized after an initial crisis, test kits remain scarce.

Similarly, Rivers State has seen reduced community testing due to kit shortages, and the FCT faces gaps in second- and third-line drugs along with testing kits.

Experts emphasize that testing is the entry point to HIV care.

Dr. Dan Onwujekwe, a TB/HIV specialist, said, “Without test kits, we cannot identify infected individuals or provide timely treatment, which could increase transmission and drug resistance.”

The funding crisis stems from cuts to the US President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), which has supported HIV testing, treatment, and community programs in Nigeria for decades.

According to UNAIDS, the halt threatens millions of lives globally and risks reversing gains made in HIV control.

In response, the Nigerian government, through NACA, has approved a $200 million intervention fund and launched initiatives to boost domestic production of ARVs and diagnostic kits.

However, shortages persist in many regions, particularly affecting pediatric HIV care, second- and third-line ARTs, and community outreach services.

While Lagos State has maintained drug and test kit availability, other states continue to grapple with gaps in both testing and treatment services.

Health experts warn that continued reliance on foreign donors without robust local manufacturing of drugs and test kits leaves Nigeria vulnerable.

Prof. Lawrence Ogbonnaya of Ebonyi State University stressed the urgency of domestic solutions: “It is high time Nigeria produces its own test kits and drugs. Dependence on imported supplies is no longer sustainable. We risk losing the gains made over decades if this continues.”

Efforts to get comments from NACA’s Director-General were unsuccessful, as Dr. Temitope Ilori is currently abroad.

Police Inspector Killed In Edo Checkpoint Shooting

A police inspector serving at the Ekiadolor Area Command in Edo State was shot dead on Friday by gunmen during a routine stop-and-search operation in Benin, the state capital.

CSP Moses Yamu, spokesperson for the Edo Police Command, confirmed the incident in a statement released to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

According to Yamu, the attack occurred around 12:00 pm when an unregistered black Lexus SUV with heavily tinted windows approached a checkpoint but refused to stop after being flagged down.

“The suspicious actions of the vehicle’s occupants led officers to conduct further checks. Tragically, one of the occupants opened fire at close range, killing the Inspector instantly, before fleeing the scene,” he said.

Following the incident, Edo State Police Commissioner Monday Agbonika has ordered a full-scale investigation and launched an intensive manhunt for the perpetrators.

All intelligence and operational resources are being deployed to apprehend the suspects.

Yamu urged the public to assist law enforcement by providing credible information, particularly about any vehicle matching the suspect description.

Residents can report tips to the nearest police station or via the command’s emergency lines: 08037646272 or 08077773721.

He reassured citizens that the command remains committed to protecting lives and property, and security measures have been intensified across the state as the yuletide season approaches.

2027: Make A Decision Now Or Step Aside – ADC Tells Obi

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has called on former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi to clarify whether he intends to join the party. While the ADC acknowledged Obi as a key political figure in its coalition, the party said it would not force him to join.

Obi, in a recent YouTube interview with Advocacy for Good Governance, described the ADC-led coalition as “unstable” due to unresolved issues, including zoning arrangements.

Despite his reservations, he affirmed confidence in the leadership of the coalition, including former Senate President David Mark and ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

When asked if he would remain committed to the coalition even if not selected as its presidential candidate, Obi emphasized his focus on national progress rather than personal ambition.

However, Obi’s media office later denied that he gave the interview, with his aide Ibrahim Umar reiterating Obi’s confidence in the ADC.

Responding, ADC spokesperson Bolaji Abdullahi said the party’s priority was to demonstrate its credibility as a political alternative, not to focus on zoning issues.

He urged Obi to make up his mind about joining the party, noting that ADC is committed to building a strong, nationwide presence.

Abdullahi said, “We want Peter Obi to join us in building a political party that can reset Nigerian politics. But if he insists on waiting for zoning resolutions before deciding, he should do so. We will continue encouraging him to be part of our journey.”

Meanwhile, Obi’s former campaign spokesman Yunusa Tanko called for patience, urging the ADC to give Obi more time to consult his supporters before making a final decision.

Tanko also confirmed Obi’s intention to run in the 2027 presidential election, emphasizing that zoning should not override national consensus.

“Obi will disclose his decision soon,” Tanko said, noting the delicate nature of the choice and the need for careful consultation with his constituency and supporters worldwide.
